Fabulous food and service!! Best food in the area! I go at least a couple times a week, esp for their delicious (addictive!) breakfast sandwiches and lunch! I sat outside on the patio with my dog while my dad and husband went inside to order coffees and snacks. The cookies were very good here. My husband ordered an Italian sandwich, and it was HUGE. There was so much meat on it, it must have been a half a foot high. We were here on a weekday afternoon, so it was pretty dead and I'm sure it gets totally packed on weekends. Delicious sandwiches--my husband cannot stop talking about their breakfast bagel sandwiches...after two years. They also have tasty coffee, and all sorts of yummy pastries. There's plenty of outdoor seating for sunny days, and we've never had trouble finding parking on the street. I see lots of tourists stopping by to people watch as they relax on the outdoor patio. They have another location I believe, in Sharon, which I have not tried but it looks darling. read more

I have been coming to Kent for years and never went into Gifford's until today and I am so glad I did. I had the chicken cutlet apple melt and it was simply delicious. The atmosphere was very comfortable and relaxing with a home-vibe feel. I finished off my meal with a double chocolate chip oatmeal cookie and it was heaven. You could tell it was homemade and not prepackaged. The vegetarian options are out of this world as my friend had the BBQ burger glvegan style with homemade fries. Cute little place in a quaint small town. I had a coconut chocolate chip muffin. It was very tasty but only had 2 chocolate chips in the whole muffin. Wish there were more but coconut flavor was great! My daughter had French fries and fried chicken and she enjoyed it! I also tried a vegetable Samosa and it was average. Nestled in the northwest corner of CT lies the quaint,artsy town of Kent. Not gonna lie a lot of snooty over the top limp hand shak-ed eccentric folk out here, but I won't hold it against them with a place like J.P Giffords. In recent years I've been doing alot of work on this side of the state but with little foodie gain; however this smaller deli/ restaurant is the provider of no less than terrific, clever, tasty, and crafty sandwiches for lunch and breakfast. I make a point of rerouting myself toward this solid lunch spot if I'm even kinda close. In my mind any place that also serves as a mini fromageri and market selling delectable meats and cheeses is instant winner!!!! Seriously they sell slabs of bacon thick enough to build walls with...anyway back to the sandwiches , constructed using fresh varieties of bread, hot or cold, breakfast or lunch they knock your socks off!!! There is always something new to try and everything they make sounds great on the board but tastes even better.With great specials, great sandwiches , and meals this is my number one favorite place to splurge on a solid lunch around this neck of the woods. I would seriously recommend to any one passing by this area..the prices are a little steep for the portions however if you look around and all you see is BMWs , Mercedes Benzes , and Bentlys it is what it is ; a typical sammy or wrap will run you about $8- $9 not gonna break the bank but when you throw in some sides and a drink your talking $15 -$20 a little pricey just for lunch but hey this place had turned bad days into good ones for me one bite at a time....-enjoy read more

There are good things about Giffords, but there are some not-so good, too, based on our experience. Let's talk about the good first because we want to encourage others to stop by to check it out. They have some yummy pastries and English muffins; they make a variety of interesting sandwiches; and they have some very cool outdoor seating under umbrellas that allow great people watching as tourists and locals saunter by. We did find a down side, however. The sandwiches we ordered were not just interesting but a tad peculiar. The burger with gorgonzola was two slim patties of not-very flavorful meat with clumps of cheese and a tomato that wasn't quite ripe. The Lomi-lomi salad was unusual, served with the salmon grouped on top of the dish and no attempt at mixing. And, regrettably, it just wasn't very good. Prices were fair enough (the burger was $10) given the area. Perhaps you'll have a better experience, though, and we hope so. read more

My family tried to eat lunch there. We waited about 10 minutes and no one took our order. In fact, we didn't even see anyone working the counter where the sign is telling customers to place the order. I get it that they were busy, but we got zero acknowledgement from the staff. Everything is fresh and tasty--sandwiches are delicious, and the treats are even better. We've been 5 or 6 times and never had anything we didn't like. We'd go more often, but we live in Brooklyn. Some faves: Beet salad with baby spinach, fried parsnips, and sunflower seeds Philly cheese steak (a bit more like a French dip) Current $5 special turkey, bacon and avocado Espresso chocolate cookie (smoky, with a nice salty-sweet finish) Everything is made with care. Service is impeccable--friendly and attentive. I can't remember the last time I went to a place where the entire staff was friendly. Checkout the incredible beer/food pairing for $38 on Wednesdays. They could fetch $80 for that in Brooklyn, if not more. Kent is a cool destination--falls, sculpture garden, chocolate shop--totally worth the trip. read more

We stopped by here on our way back from the Berkshires. We picked up two sandwiches and ate inside. We had turkey, bacon, chipotle mayo on a roll. It was good, but a bit too salty. I know, hello, you have bacon. The roll did not taste particularly fresh. We also had the prosciutto, mozz, and pesto on a ciabbata roll. Tasty. This is my all time favorite lunch spot! My husband and I found this a years ago when we were on a motorcycle ride and we've been coming back ever since. It's the height of summer with fruits and veggies galore and my TOMATO on my Bacon, Lettuce and TOMATO was light pink-like a winter hothouse tomoato. So disappointing. Asked for toasted bread, no go. This is a store, a deli, and a meeting hall for students, tourists, and locals. The food is yummy and well prepared. Great place for breakfast, lunch, and takeout. Like all of Kent, it is somewhat pricy versus a Litchfield Hills deli..but also it is better. Whether inside or outside, it is a good place to watch the crowd. read more

We could not have been more pleased with the catering from J.P. Gifford for our 2014 holiday party. Guests raved about the poached salmon filets, sweet and sour meatballs, and sliced filet of beef. In store is always good, but this was our first catering. Outstanding! read more
