It's not easy to find quality and cheap Chinese food in NYC, but Joy Kitchen never disappoints! I live less than a block away and I've ordered from here more times than I can count, and I've never been dissatisfied. All of their food comes in huge quantities and is very affordable. My favorite are the crab rangoons, which most places don't offer/don't make well. My other go-to orders are lo mein and egg drop soup, but I've been working my way through the menu and everything is good. The only thing that could be better is the rice, they don't have traditional Chinese fried rice and only have yellow rice. And I wish they were open Sundays. Delivery is always quick (about 10 minutes calling to delivery), and whenever I call to place an order it's ready for pickup about 5 minutes later. I've never dined in as they only have a couple booths available. I cannot recommend this place enough to anyone who lives nearby, or who's in the neighborhood! read more

This place was really close from our son's house, so when somebody says Chinese - Joy Kitchen was suggested. It's a small place with only a few tables to eat, so main business is take out and delivery. We just walked to the place and ordered there. After 15 minutes all the food was ready. We got sweet and sour chicken one with white rice another with brown rice (was very good), orange flavor chicken with white rice (was good, but it was too spicy for my taste), chicken with broccoli was probably the best dish. This place is now Joy Kitchen 88 and the food is questionable. We ordered take out as usual and in addition to entrees, we ordered shrimp dumplings, which are usually pretty decent. They're usually a combination of pork and shrimp. Tonight's order was just pork and tasted like raw sewage. I'm aware of something called "pork taint," (Google it, gross) that could have been to blame but my hunch is the meat was old and low quality. The entrees were edible but not good. This is the greatest Chinese takeout in the Neighborhood. Luke and Joy are incredibly kind, they always remember our order and exactly how we like it. The dishes are tasty and perfectly cooked. I don't really write bad reviews for restaurants, I keep that to myself but this was just unacceptable. My mother and father went here today and had a terrible experience. There was literally a worm- caterpillar like bug on the broccoli and when my parents told the staff, they were incredibly rude and told them that it's okay and they should just eat it. When my parents asked for a refund they didn't give back the full money (total was $11.50, gave back a ten) and they threw the money at her! And then when my parents said okay they'll pay for the water the staff member got angry and demanded an extra quarter, when she didn't even return the full amount of money. terrible service, and very unclean- i am so disappointed and upset for my parents. read more

There was so much chicken in my chicken and broccoli, the chicken dumplings have a lot of meat inside of them and nothing is drenched in oil or MSG, all the flavors are are there....But still the food is a bit bland. The worst meal that I have had in a long time! How can you ruin Honey Shrimp with Walnuts? I wonder how long will it take before my stomach forgives me? They make battered shrimp and douse it with a bit of walnut pieces with four broccoli florets that was incredibly tasteless. I have to end now because I am about to throw up and my stomach hurts. I decided to give this place a try given that it's closer than my go-to Chinese American restaurant. But, what a mistake! The food was absolutely flavorless. I ordered the kung pao chicken which had zero flavor/heat. Normally, kung pao chicken comes with chili peppers and peanuts-- Joy Kitchen's version had zero peppers, like 5 peanuts and an obscene amount of carrots. Everything was in drenched in an orange sauce with a weird after taste. The dumplings and wonton soup were also subpar-- the wonton wrappers were really thick and chewy. Not good at all. Joy kitchen is spot on every time. The food is ready incredibly fast & is delicious. They offer vegan options that aren't just a pile of cardboard veggies over rice. They have seitan to replace the traditional meat dishes. My go-to has been the General Tso's with seitan instead of chicken. Saucy, spicy, & a generous serving. 1 Star off because they forgot the can of ginger ale. Only a $1 but for some reason it bugs me when they forget. This place is really good! It's fast and it's cheap. Steamed dumplings and the spicy beef are excellent. Orange chicken, sweet and sour chicken and shrimp in lobster sauce are our regular orders. $7.20 combos are the best value. It's easily 2 meals. It would be painful to try and eat the amount of food they give you here. The egg rolls are pretty good. Delivery guys are friendly and quick. This is my go to Chinese place. read more

The food is what you expect: fast food chinese. It's decent, nothing special. However, my husband found a piece of SPONGE in his moo shu pork the other night. I'm not entirely sure how this is possible as it doesn't look like anyone has used a sponge in this place for a very long time, but it happened. Can't complain about the food. Honestly though the only non-spicy things I've tried off this menu are the egg roll and steamed dumplings. Both are good. The only problem is the sauce. They give you one of each you ask for and then if you say "extra" they give you one more. I'd never eat inside, it's only three booths and one is always occupied by one of the workers. DO NOT ORDER FROM THIS PLACE! I ordered the chicken chow mein on Seamless, which traditionally is a thin noodle dish. Instead I received a mess of celery doused in sauce with bits of chicken thrown in. I called the restaurant, and they insisted that this is what I ordered, and then hung up on me. I'm Chinese, and "mein" is noodles in Chinese, so I don't understand how they can send a dish labeled noodles with no noodles in the dish. I called back after he hung up on me, and he rudely insisted that this is what I ordered, and would not give me a refund or send a replacement. The only way I could get a refund is if I walked to the store and brought the dish back, which is ridiculous because Seamless is a delivery service. The only way I got my refund was by calling Seamless, who informed me that they wanted to come back to get the dish. Still waiting for them to make good on that promise. read more

I order from here at least once a week and since I discovered their hand-rolled, not too doughy, steamed shrimp dumplings, it's been more like 3 times a week. I'm half Chinese and these shrimp dumplings are the closest thing to the real deal for a hole in the wall, take out & delivery Chinese place. The veggie and pork dumplings are those fat, doughy ones. Their mei fun is good but inconsistent from day to day and their sesame tofu is delicious. The scallion pancakes are a little dry but it's better than it being soaked in oil which I've gotten at other places. If you get the udon soup, ask them to put an egg in there, it makes the broth nice and thick. Also, I think you get 1 free soda for every $10 you spend so specify your choice if you don't want something random. Cheap and yummy. read more

So I work near by and am bound by the closest location to eat considering I'm over at 20th street. But they take good care of me and they are pretty good. Not great, just good. This location is not about costumer service, it's your basic quick Chinese takeout spot. The location of the takeout is unattractive so I would refrain from eating at the location and order anything from there as TakeOut. read more

For take out Chinese, this place is GREAT. Really. I work down the street and when I don't pack lunch this is the only place I go. They have a great $5 lunch special that includes general tsos, sesame chicken and other classics with a soda. The servings are such that i usually get two meals out of the lunch special. I would say that this place does the job. For the price and convenience of being right outside my door, it's perfect. Just be careful not to order anything that is too far off the menu. I once spent 5 minutes explaining that I would like non-breaded chicken in a particular dish, only to arrive to find out they did not understand me. Beyond that, ordering by phone for pickup is 50/50. Half of the times I've ordered when I get there the order hasn't been started. the chinese takeouts usually get 1 star from me, so 3 means it's good. here's why: 1. close to my apartment located near prospect park. 2. fresh made food at a very fair price. i only order the healthy selections which are large sized. i had a four jewels or something like that with steamed meats and 3 types of steamed seafood with rice and garlic sauce on the side. his dishes all don't taste the same and he gives you a free soda for purchases over $10. After moving in, I was in a search for a place to do my laundry. While waiting, I noticed this chinese spot right next door to the laundromat. I was craving chinese for a long time, and I decided to have a taste. The prices here are cheap and they have typical dishes served at every other little chinese restaurant. The workers were professional and nice. The food came out quickly and the service was outstanding. After getting home, I wanted to eat right away. I ordered chicken and broccoli, my go-to dish for trying new chinese places. First thing I noticed was that the food looked VERY different. It wasn't like other places where you would just get cheap over-greased food. This chicken looked baked and glazed with a different type of sauce (much better!) and everything looked steamed rather than fried and over-sauced. This place is different from other places and if you want quality food, definitely drop by!
