5/25/25 Ate List: Chicken Tinga Tacos - 7.7 It's very late. I need food. Chicken Tinga Tacos FTW. Delicious. Light. Messy. Wonderful. Also, this restaurant is sick. Love the vibe.

Great place for late night drinks and food! Found this spot in Center City after a night out and it gave us everything we needed - a tasty, filling meal, chill dive bar vibes, and one last delicious drink! We shared nachos at the table that were packed with toppings and perfect for sharing between the 4 of us. The steak burrito was top tier! It was filled to the brim with rice, beans, pico de gallo and meat. The steak was tender and flavorful. I was full after just half of the burrito and was able to get a second meal out of it! Highly recommend their burritos if you're looking to get a bang for your buck. Can't go wrong with a margarita pitcher to tie it all together. It wasn't too sweet and was the perfect portion for a group our size. As late diners, I appreciate the quick, attentive service from staff and bartenders. Definitely recommend this spot for a late night bite!

    - very close to Kimmel center and miller theatre so very convenient to grab a drink and a bite before heading to the theater - has upstairs seating away from the main door so you can avoid the coldddddd - quesadilla wasn't bad in taste but felt slightly undercooked. It was toooo soft - plantains were neither salty nor sweet, and very bland - good service

Amazing place! So glad I found it. I was looking for a good food spot in Central Philly. A lot of places around here are closed on Mondays. I found Jose's. Their food and drinks looked good and it was very easy to get to. I'm so glad I stopped here. Their margaritas, chips and salsa, guacamole and chicken enchiladas were incredibly delicious! If I was back in this area again, I'd definitely come here again. We stopped here on a trivia night. It was on the second floor. But, because this place has a bar, dining room and second floor it's spacious and there was plenty of space for patrons who weren't participating in trivia. I'd definitely stop back again!

This place really caught me by surprise. We were expecting a classic Philly Mexican restaurant but got treated with an old school dive with elevated food. Our food was absolutely delicious and the drink menu had so many options. The service was very friendly and fast. We love a classic dive so liked the vibe, but it is very dark and a bit hard to see. It's a little pricey but the food was very good!

Wasn't expecting much considering the reviews. Night was getting busy when i walked in but server promptly directed us to a upstairs table. Wasn't hungry so we ordered some plantains and nachos. The plantains were average and forgettable. The nachos were amazing, enough so to say it's the best I've tasted in all of Philly. It was flavorful, from the cheese that complimented the chips to spicy jalapenos and its juices that enhanced the entire plate. The tables did get crowded but was enough space for people to get around.

Chicken Tinga Tacos were really good!! Very flavorful and soft! I also enjoyed the margarita pitcher too! It was totally enough to share! The staff is always amazing, very friendly and a very fun lively crowd, next to a lot of fun spots! Definitely recommend for a quick bite and even a nice dinner!

Jose Pistola's spicy tuna guac is one of my favorites in the city. The guac itself is delicious and the ahi tuna makes it even more tasty and unique. The mahi mahi tacos are average. They're a bit dry so I definitely wouldn't order them for delivery again. The Brussels sprouts quesadilla was actually delicious! I'd definitely recommend it if you're into veggie options. The chips and pico are fresh and tasty. Overall I'd give the food here 4 stars. The restaurant itself is not my favorite. I've been several times and usually sit at the upstairs bar. The margaritas are decent, but it's hard to get the bartenders attention even when it's not that busy so the service is lacking. Sometimes they straight up ignore you which I find so odd. It's also always blasting music so be ready to yell to the person next to you. If you're always cold like me, be aware that it's usually very chilly upstairs.

Great Time my girlfriend and I came here for a night out and it did not disappoint. We order a mango and strawberry marg and drinks were tasty but definitely alcohol. If you're having a few though just get a pitcher. Lots of guac in the bowl and chips seemed homemade. The mango guac will be on the list to get next time. Both meals were so damn good. The way they make their chicken is so good with just a little spice and kick to it. The pickled onions I think they are is something I have to make at home now. Asked for more on the side. Music choice was great on the speakers and vibes were good. Churros with the chocolate sauce was the best cherry on top.

We were shopping for memorial day deals in Philly, got thirsty and hungry, and luckily found this little unassuming gem. I ordered 3 margaritas: Diablo, Guava and Mango and all three were soooo good. The bartenders are so fun and sassy (in a good way). Unlike so many other disappointing bars, they ask if you want a sugar or salt rim on the marg which I personally think is wonderful. The pomegranate and mango guac is just as good as their spicy tuna guac - which I have previously tried at Sancho's. They have amazing guac flavors and think they should put a "guac flight" on the menu, it will be such a hit. The carnitas buns were epic too! I don't get why they have such low reviews, I think their drinks and food is absolutely delicious!

Excellent food and service. Great prices too. Very reasonable. I can't wait to go back! As I told my waiter we loved everything about the place except bathroom is in 3rd floor. Really nothing can resolve that it's an old building. So just know this and go!!!!

We were greeted as soon s we walked in by both the bartender and one of the owners. Our server brought water as soon as we sat down. She was attentive and helpful with explanations. The food here is authentic! Several different kinds of guacamole are available. We chose the one with pomegranate. It added a nice crunch and flavor. One with grasshopper was available. lol that was a no for me! The trio of empanadas were delicious. We shared a carnitas taco platter and branzino platter. The tacos were tasty. The branzino was cooked nicely with good flavor. The rice and beans and Brussels spouts and mushrooms were all delicious. I'll definitely be back!

The meat in the tacos was so dry that it was hard to chew and swallow. Some of the pieces were cooked to a crisp. No amount of salsa could make them better. I'm sorry I didn't take photos of the tacos, but trust me me I get no pleasure from leaving a bad review for this place; I am not lying or exaggerating. I thought they were going to be one of our local gems. I choked down a half a taco, gave the rest to my husband and he couldn't eat them either. The churros actually had raw batter in the middle and the outside was rubbery and hard at the same time. You could barely bite through it. I'm a cook and I know that that is about keeping the oil at an even temperature to get the inside done and not overcook the outside. Someone in the kitchen did not know what they were doing. The thing is, I have had their food before and it was pretty good. I don't know if there is a new chef or what happened, but I can't trust them after this experience.

But El Rey is good in its own right, taking familiar foods and flavors, with a bit of a fancier twist, and making a good meal that I love to eat and enjoy! Seating and service here is friendly and prompt. Even when it's pretty loud and seems packed, there are always a handful of open tables available, where we've usually been able to be seated almost immediately. Such was the case this evening. We were on a bit of a time crunch so we ordered immediately and our food came out so fast that the waiter for our table was surprised as the food beat him with our napkins to the table. We ordered the Tuna Tostada and the Yucatan Spiced Chicken Fajitas. Both were amazing! Good thing for our tight timeline, the food was gone as fast as it came. The waiter helpfully recommend the house hot sauce, which was certainly spicy and a good compliment on our fajitas. Overall, a great place to dine for Mexican-inspired! Perfectly seasoned, tender, flavorful -- the kind of bite that makes you close your eyes for a second. They were so good I came back two days later just for them. There were booths, tables and bar seating available with Wonder Years playing on a few TVs with warm lighting and the incandescent Christmas lights that are reminiscent of Grandma's house (bonus points for nostalgia!) I requested a booth and she promptly sat me. She brought me water, menus and explained the specials to me. As I perused the menu, I was overwhelmed with the options available to me. I ultimately landed on one of the dinner specials (Cabernet braised brisket with a side of carrots & buttery mashed potatoes), chips & salsa and a Paloma. Chips landed first and while both salsas were fresh, I still felt the need to add salt. (Everyone's palate is different) Food & drink arrived simultaneously. Paloma was made strong but tasted more like a classic margarita as opposed to the tang of grapefruit that comes with a Paloma. Still good! The food was essentially cold & looked like it had been sitting for awhile being served to me but all the flavors were there. The brisket fell apart, I didn't even need a knife to cut it. The carrots were tender and the mashed potatoes were buttery. I would 1000% go back for the drinks and service, however I may get something different on the menu.
