I see some reviews about the shop having hair all over the floor. The thing is, the people in there are clean and the hair on the floor isn't greasy. 6th Ave is dirty, greasy with homeless-tramps and you're walking upon that filth! I'm a very clean person, but I didn't feel unclean in this barber shop. To respond to the reviews about cleanliness: I watched Jon sanitize everything he used, the hair on the floor looked just washed because the clientelle was businessmen and well-kept children, and Jon works fast in front of a large crowd- one patron after another comes out looking polished which means there's not time to sweep between patrons- there's just not time- also, there's not space to sweep because he fills the shop with customers. This guy is busy and handles that fact very, very well. I also saw him give a screaming, squirming child a perfect haircut with a line out the door. It's air-conditioned in his shop, by the way. It's hard to believe one review that said he ever cut a child.... I'm wondering what were the details during the event in which that reviewer's child supposedly was cut... I saw Jon, well-past closing time, use a straight razor on men while a lined-up crowd looked on- Jon is deft and complete. I would recommend him for all boys and men. Jon will listen to what you want, ask a few questions, and send you out the door in 10-15 minutes ready to do business. I would recommend that someone donate some new magazines to Jon so that he can clear out the old ones. And the print of a painting that Jon has on the wall is a beautiful painting but the print is totally faded. If a wealthy patron really likes Jon, get him a real acrylic or oil painting like a Norman Rockwell-type or a local Hilltop artist- something big that's fun to look at while waiting. That's my only criticism of this shop, it needs a piece of real art. read more

It doesn't matter the age, style or amount of hair, Jon obsesses over each haircut. Watch him. If he's finished with a cut and he spots something out of the corner of his eye, out come the clippers. He's also fast. He's been cutting hair for years here in Tacoma and he knows how to make every move count. If there's no beard or eyebrow trimming, I'd say he cuts a head every 6-7 minutes. The guy charges $9 for a decent haircut and that includes a beard trim if you like. Sure, there's hair on the floor and usually a bit of a wait, but at $9 I don't expect 1st class treatment. A few times I've witnessed him get a bit political which I don't particularly enjoy, but dude. Come on. He's a great barber who's been in the business for a long time and it's $9. I had to have a haircut for an event the next day, and danged if my barber wasn't out for a week on vacation. I came to Jon's after doing a little research. I wish I could say it was a pleasant first experience, but it wasn't. There was easily 5 different people's hair in the floor, and Jon was walking around in it. This isn't just disgusting and unsanitary. It's unsafe and illegal. The place is a prime location on 6th Ave., but it looks like no remodeling has been done since the first Reagan Presidency. I don't want to rag on the guy, but damn. Clean up, pick up, paint and patch. A weekend's worth of work would have this place gleaming. And sweep in between your customer's haircuts. No one wants to have to walk through other people's freakin' funky-@$$ hair to get to the barber chair. read more

I just moved to the area from DC, and I was looking to replace my barber of 15 years. I wanted the hometown barbershop feel, where a man can watch sports, talk story, and get his ears lowered correctly for a fair price. John exceeded my expectations. Not only did he listen to what I wanted, and deliver what I asked for; but at the end of the cut he pulled out the hot foam and straight razor and cleaned up the lines well beyond what I asked. I don't know what to say here, as far as the haircut goes it was the best I've ever had. Jon was friendly enough, no bs, just sit down and tell the man what you want. He had my cut done in under 15min, including a neck shave with a straight razor. He's cash or check only, not a big deal considering it's a very affordable price. I had to knock 2 stars off because of the lack of cleanliness and low standards of sanitation. I walked out there with mixed feelings of looking good and feeling like I needed a shower. read more

There was a thick layer of hair from different people around the work space. So nasty. I walked in and walked back out. Take the 30 seconds after a haircut and clean your workspace. Its not often that i do get my hair cut; but i have a job interview coming up and was looking a bit shaggy, I asked my girlfriend's father of any good shops because my beard was also in need of a trim. He recommended that I go to Jon's; walked in, sat down, and waited, there were a few people in line ahead of me, not too bad, waited about 20 minutes.
