Amazing Hike but it's not for beginner hikers here!! Steep but rewarding!!!…read more I would say this is moderate to advanced-level hiking. This is our first time hiking at Bailey Canyon to Jones Peak. Bailey Canyon trail is located at the Bailey Canyon Park in Sierra Madre. We parked our car at the parking lot at around 8 in the morning. The parking lot is so small so make sure to get there early. (We got lucky and found a parking space). We were planning to hike to the "Old Foundation" because it was our first time to hike there so we didn't want to overdo it. This trail is considered a challenging route because it's a very steep and narrow climb all the way. We started from Bailey Canyon Park and passed the small reservoir before hiking uphill into the foothills. We saw the map and the "Old Foundation" should take about 2.2 miles but we hiked more than 2.8 miles and still didn't see the sign. We almost gave up and wanted to take our return route. Glad we saw and asked other hikers when they came back down and they told us that we passed the "Old Foundation" for a while and we had almost arrived at the Peak (Jones Peak) in less than 15 minutes. We were very surprised that we were close to the Peak so we got motivated again. The views were breathtaking and absolutely beautiful. The weather was so perfect. When we arrived at the Jones Peak, we saw the beautiful and colorful rocks in heart shape and gorgeous panoramic breathtaking views. We finally got to Jones Peak at 3375 feet!!!! The map said it's about a 5.7-mile out-and-back trail near Sierra Madre and it takes an average of 4 h 2 min to complete. I checked my Strava app (I forgot to wear my Apple Watch that day) and it shows that I hiked 6.7 miles and we finished our hike around noon so it took us about 4 hours. We were so proud of ourselves. Make sure that you bring plenty of water, and you can also bring trekking poles if you have them. They'll help on the steep slopes. (We didn't use trekking poles this time but I'll probably prepare it for next time)

The trail has some decent shade in some areas, but a lot of exposed areas as well. This trail is secluded from the outside world compared to Chantry Flats and is a perfect day hike to get away from people. Highly recommend coming early to beat the heat and find parking. A day pass or an adventure pass is needed for parking. Beware of poison oak. There's a lot in this area. Would come back!

As posted in my other Chantry-esque reviews, I've hiked this area hundreds of times, but always with young kids or inexperienced hikers... thus, we end up at Sturtevant Falls instead of venturing into connected trails. This time, we arrived at the Chantry lot around 6 P.M., hung our Forest Adventure Passes on the rearview mirrors, and backpacked with headlamps into the local hills. At the bottom of the asphalt-paved trail from the parking lot-- just as soon as you cross the footbridge, the trail to Hoegee's branches off to your left. A slow but steady uphill climb saw us arrive at Hoegee's camp in the dark of night. Just a few other folks were availing themselves of campsites, so our group of about 15 made camp, and enjoyed a sack dinner. All trash and food was secured in bear cans (which we brought) and a bear box that was found in the middle of camp near the trail. Plenty of bears in the area at all times, so be bear aware. No, actually, you probably aren't very good at creating a bear hang, and you're doing it wrong. Use the bear box! Plenty of water rushing over the nearby spillway for late winter/early spring was a delightful sound as I fell asleep on my not-entirely flat camp spot selected in the dark. In the morning, we awoke with the morning light to a beautiful canopy of oak trees. After breakfast, we tore down camp quickly, and continued up the loop for Spruce Grove. This hike can be completed in a single day, to be sure... but if you want to stretch it into an overnighter, camping here is free for first-come, first-served folks. Do note that there are no restroom facilities at Hoegee's camp-- so you're going nature potty and/or digging a latrine. Please be sure to move far away from Winter Creek before digging your little hole... everyone downstream thanks you :) If you're doing the day loop, there is a restroom at Spruce Grove, but no running water.

Both the bear and I were startled by each other. The bear quickly scampered away, thankfully. I didn't have to be the one to choose fight or flight. + A good next-door alternative to the burned down Mt Wilson Trail. + Nice thing about this hiking area is there's a restaurant both at the base (Adams Pack Station) and at the alternative summit (Cosmic Café at the end of Mt Wilson Trail). . Chantry Flat has a decent parking lot size. I found a spot right away at 10am, likely because it was a hot weekday. - The trail's often overrun with flies. Two flew in my mouth during my hike. Tasted bitter. Managed to spit them out. - Restrooms lacking amenities and in need of repair. No hand-washing sink or hand sanitizer available. - Required parking pass ($5/day). - No registry at the summit. Still decent view of Pasadena though.

Parking: Street parking on Cloverleaf Dr. We got there around 8 am and there were plenty of spots along the road to park. Environment: There are a handful of trails to choose from. Our route eventually led us to the fire road which we then followed to exit at Highland Pl. We followed the streets back to where we originally parked on Cloverleaf Dr. There are no restrooms along the trail. Yay/Nay/Meh: Yay. In addition, two other entrances are surrounded by "Residents Only" parking signs. The Ridgeside entrance is not marked at all and is only accessible via an easement at 873 Ridgeside Drive (stay on the pavement). I definitely get the vibe that the locals did not really support this preserve, unlike other Foothill neighborhoods such as Glendale and La Cañada that take great pride in preserving the beauty of their natural wildnerness areas. In addition, the Preserve is pockmarked by parcels of private lands. You will be walking along a trail and all of a sudden there's a sign advising you that you may not proceed because you will be on private land. Very disconcerting. Worst of all is the complete take-over of non-native plants. An invasive plant/native plan restoration program seems to be absolutely nonexistent here. This is all the sadder because the Preserve is home to a federally-endangered flowering plant. Lots of invasives, unfriendly neighbors and challenging parking are big problems; however, the land and views are stunning. Monrovia has a gem here but does not know what to do with it.
