Great hike with nice views most of the way! It's a nice downhill at the beginning toward the waterfall, but it's definitely challenging on the way back since it's all incline. I recommend bringing a hat since there's not much shade, especially on the way back up. My group purchased our parking pass at a nearby store, but it seems like you can also purchase a parking pass once you're at the top. read more

Relatively easy hike at about 3.8 miles. I did it with family members of different ages, along with my 8-year-old golden retriever, and everyone handled it well. The trail is beautiful and mostly shaded, which makes it especially enjoyable. I recommend starting no later than 6:00 a.m. to avoid the heat on the way back. The return portion is mostly uphill, so it's best not to tackle it during the hottest part of the day. You'll also need a parking permit (costs $5) for your vehicle. read more

Today's the 4th of July & they are CLOSED. The entrance gate was locked when we got there! We waited around about 15 minutes before seeing another person trying to come out of the gate and could not. (Hope she didn't wait long for police to get there & let her) It would have been nice if the site didn't say open. Another hiker said that someone told her they didn't want anyone in the area just in case they wanted to set off fireworks. Hopefully, I can review it again and have a personal experience. It's been years since I've been to this hike. I was always hesitant to return to sturtevant falls because parking is super packed on the weekends unless you go there super early. I made it a mission to arrive there by 6 AM to guarantee myself a parking spot and it was still a little dark so I brought my flashlight. The view of the falls was so pretty! I was the only one there by 7 and a lot of people were hiking to the falls when I was returning to the parking lot. Glad I revisited this trail again. read more

This trail was absolutely gorgeous the views were amazing! My Apple Watch said it took 2 miles and about an hour to get to the waterfall, so it's definitely a bit of a walk, but totally worth it. The water was ice cold, but honestly it still felt really nice. Parking was HORRIBLE. I waited around 40 minutes just to find a single spot, so be prepared for that. Also, make sure you bring toilet paper if you plan on using the restroom because it was disgusting. I did notice some trash along the hike, which made me sad, but it wasn't completely overwhelming. Just be ready to hike back up once you start the trail haha. Overall, such a fun experience and I'd still do it again. read more

Sturtevant Fall is a 50 foot waterfall drop in the San Gabriel National Monument park within Arcadia. Accessible by hiking the Chantry Flat trailhead from the parking lot. The trail is 3.3 miles long. This trail is extremely busy on the weekend. Best to visit this trail on weekdays early in the morning at 6:00am when the parking lot opens. On the weekends the parking lot is full by 6:10am so best to get there when gate opens. If you want a peaceful hike best on weekdays. The falls are worth a visit as beautiful. Plus a small pool forms beneath which is great to dunk in on hot days. Note the water is super cool but refreshing. Bring water shoes as rocky bottom. And don't forget you have a long climb back to the parking lot. If you seek a longer hike you can do 7.3 mile loop. During this loop you will cross several rivers, cabins and more. The hike is partially shaded. Even on the weekends, most of this hike is quiet and empty of people. As mentioned, there is a parking lot. There is a bathroom next to the lot. Plus a mini cafe where you can get your adventure pass, five dollars. Pass needed for the parking lot. read more

It was my first time hiking, so my cousin decided to take me to a place he's hiked before: Sturtevant Falls. The scenery was so beautiful! I've never seen so many hills and waterfalls before in my life. It might be a normal view for people who live in California, but for a person who lives in Louisiana and has never hiked before everything was so new to me. The incline wasn't too bad, but be aware of logs and rocks you have to step on as I had fallen a bit into the water due to small slips. Parking wasn't too bad, but it was pretty crowded on a Saturday morning so we had to wait for a minute to get parking. Overall, it was a new experience for me but a fun one. I'd go hiking again, but what a better way to start my first hiking experience than at Sturtevant Falls! read more

1130 am, Saturday, September 13, 2025 First of all, parking sucks, limited parking. Mind the tips: arrive early in the morning; pre-purchase the parking pass (daily $5; annual $30). I can't vouch for that as we arrived just before noon and it's my first visit to Sturtevant Falls. Arrived to parking at capacity. Waited at the top lot adjacent to the pack store. By the way, the pack store did not have annual passes, sold only the daily pass. On the way back to the car to place the pass on the dash board, observed a hustle going on with parking space. There was an older Asian man attempting to sell his Tesla occupied parking space to someone nieve enough to pay. The victim in a truck stood his ground and said it's illegal. So beware of parking scams by someone willing to give up their space for cash. Nice hike. The hike back was up the steep hill. There are limited parking spaces. Early arrivals seem to have a better chance of getting a parking space. Restrooms available only near the start of the trail. Others were closed. read more

AM cloud disappeared and the sun started beaming down, luckily this trail is shaded for the most part. ** THIS TRAIL HAS BEEN REOPENED ** If you're looking for a moderate hike with a flowing waterfall during any season, this it the hike for you! 1. Arrive the earlier the better due to limited parking. I'd say there is parking for about 30 cars or so. 2. You must get an "Adventure Pass" for day parking. You can either buy one before going up the mountain at "Party house Liquor (1002 N Santa Anita Ave)" which is open as early as 7am or you can buy one on site at the Chantry Flats but not sure what their hours of operation are if you plan on buying it the same day. Other reviewers also so you can buy one ahead of time at REI or Big 5. One Day Pass is $5 or Annual Pass for $35. 3. They do have an additional private parking lot that costs $20 to park or you can park further outside along the mountain pass for free, but definitely a much longer walk/hike. 4. The best parking for the trail is the first parking strip right next to the bathrooms. The trail starts right where the bathroom is. The upper level parking lots are for the picnic areas. 5. They do have a store there that sells snacks, drinks AND beer! 6. Most hikes normally start with an incline but this one actually starts with a decline instead. Keep in mind that there are multiple inclines and you will end the hike going back with an incline before reaching the parking lot. 7. You do have to cross the river a couple of times, but most of them have a built wooden plank or is easy enough for children and dogs to cross. 8. There are quite a number of private cabins a long this trail. There were a couple of families who were hanging out with loud music and bbqing. Not sure how to inquire on cabin rentals but did not see any paths for vehicles, so I'd assume you would have to hike in and out to access the cabins. 9. Even when its freezing cold and foggy in the city, it was sunny and blue skies up in the mountain and the hike was rewarding at the end. Amazing hike all around less than four miles, the first part all down hill along a stream of water hiking to a waterfall. The path is wide and fun for dogs to jump in and out of water constantly to cool down. We got an annual parking pass for 30 dollars at Big 5 but the two lots fill up by 8 am every single weekend so you have to arrive at the crack of dawn. The hike back to the car is uphill for the last fifteen minutes but when you're done it feels fantastic. It's so shady for most of the walk as well. The hike itself is pretty easy, fun to cross the little wooden planks across streams and be surrounded by trees as opposed to the dusty and bare trails in the valley. Good amount of shade and the falls were so nice to sit next to, water was cold and refreshing, and the hike back up was a little tiring but not the worst. A Hidden Gem in the Mountains! Sturtevant Falls is one of my favorite trails in the San Gabriel Mountains. The 3.3-mile (1.5 - 2hrs hike) round-trip is the perfect blend of challenge and relaxation, just enough of a workout to feel accomplished but still super enjoyable. The scenery along the way is stunning, with shaded paths, creek crossings, and charming little cabins that make you feel like you're stepping into another world. The waterfall at the end is such a rewarding sight, especially in the spring when it's flowing strong. I always recommend getting there early, especially on weekends, since parking at Chantry Flats fills up fast. Don't forget your Adventure Pass! The uphill trek back can be a bit of a workout, but nothing too intense. Just wear good shoes and bring water. It's also dog-friendly (just keep them leashed). Arrived at around 4.30pm on a Tuesday afternoon and it was such a nice day out with minimal people in sight! Was surprised how we even got the waterfalls all to ourselves for a good 30mins! Parking is very easy with different options (easy probably bec there were no people at this time, heard it can get pretty crowded on weekends). They also ran out of parking stubs so we got free parking, yey! Otherwise would have been a cool 20 bucks. Trail is roughly 3.6mi to and from the falls. Very easy hike except for the last .5 miles (paved portion) on your way back as its a super steep climb back up to the parking. Waterfalls was really nice and strong even at this time of the year (compared to nearby falls). Plenty of insects/bugs along the way so be prepared with a repellant. read more

By far thee best hiking trail in around. They have three trails to hit up I always go to the bottoms one As it nicely shaded for my pups paws so they don't get burnt. The scenery is awesome and has some little cabins and different coo things throughout. At the end you reach the h two ohh. Get warm cool down and then get down! That's how I always do it. Just fyi you need to pay for parking so make sure you do so at the little shop up towards the right when you drive into the parking lot, you also can purchase some drinks aka adult sodas aka cool down drowners, hiking dehydrater hydrators, brewskis, brewhas, hiking hoops, trail ticklers or trail tricklets depending on the size. I always bring my camel back just so I do have actual water as I don't advise you to drink alcohol without hydrating as well. You can also purchase this national park pass ahead of time which lets you get parking for a bunch of other trails etc. If you hit the trail to the right you will go along the mountain and that one is a little more treacherous meaning spots are narrower, you have spots that are step drops alongside the trail, and is a tad bit steeper in sections but all and all it isn't really that difficult to be honest. I've also ran into a snake on that side. Prob another reason why I like the trial to the right the most. They also have a trail in between the other two, I've never done that one so I can't really speak on it, I just know from my eyes it looks like it is on asphalt for a little ways from the start and then it curves and so don't know how long you are on asphalt, most of the time I'm with my pup so I avoid asphalt again because of the heat on his paws. I used to always go check out different trails but I stopped for awhile but then started up a good minute ago but because I'm doing a lot right now it's hard to get time for things that take up a good amount of time. But I try to make sure to take time away to live as well. If I'm going to take time off I'd rather do some trails out of state or country but with school I can't do that so will settle for this for now. I always make sure to put my empty cans in my camel back and like everyone knows don't be leaving ur trash anywhere in nature. time Be safe, yelpies, stay hydrated, as it heats up watch your steps with snakes etc. and always hope y'all have a blast!!!! read more

I should have read the reviews before heading out. So, I have visited here many times in the past, but this time due to the recent fires, the falls were closed for rehab. See my posted pictures. In the past, I enjoyed hiking thru the peaceful, serene woods, beautiful trees, and most importantly, the waterfall in the end. Not enjoyable are the flies, noise, and people who throw trash like water bottles everywhere. Alas, the end goal/waterfall is not available today, and the government ranger(?) in shiny vest suggested Mount Wilson Trails, so that is where I went instead. I will be back next year when they decide to open it up again. Free parking is available in the parking lot, but you have to arrive before sunrise, really early, like before 8 am. I get up early, so that is not a problem for me. Remember to pick up after yourself, so others may continue to enjoy. :-) read more

o4.2o.19 Another hiking morning! I am a happy hiker. Today was very groomy and chill. It was just typical LA weather. I've been here a couple of times. We usually follow by Hermit fall but not today, pretty sore from Echo since we haven't hike for awhile. Anyway, today's hike was very different from the last couple of times I was here. Maybe it's because there is actually water! Yes! Due to the amount of rain this year, there were a lot of water. We even had to cross the water a few times to get to the waterfall. I really don't remember so many rocks around the waterfall hahahaha But the waterfall was awesome today! If you want to catch a good view, you should definitely go now. ;) Other than the waterfall, the best part is probably the beginning of the trail. Those crazy turns of inclines on the way back. Hahahaha it was crazy but it really works you out and I love it! A downside would be the parking issue since it's so popular, it was always hard to find parking. So we had to park down the hill today, on the side of the street. We had to hike about an extra mile. Darnnn haha On the way back to our car, we heard and saw fire engine and ambulance heading up to the trail. We don't know what happened but something definitely happened. So just be very careful! It doesn't matter if you feel like you can do it (like hike off the path, climb up to a big rock for pictures, etc), always best to follow the rule and walk within the path, rest when needed and be sure to bring water with you. It may even had nothing to do with any hiking trail but keep in mind to be careful anyway. read more

Really fun hike! Parking requires an adventure pass that you can purchase at REI on the way up on Santa Anita Ave for $30 for the year and an additional $5 for a second vehicle pass. Parking lots are really small and I saw a lot of people parked on the side of the road on the way up, but I think you can get a spot if you wait for someone to come back down like we did. I recommend going during the afternoon because the morning is very busy and difficult to find parking. The drive up is up the mountain so you'll have to yield to pedestrians and bikers going up. Kind of scary since you're on the edge of a mountain, but it should be fine if you're not scared of heights while driving. The hike starts on paved road and it goes downhill before reaching the dirt trail. You will need to cross 3 streams over rocks and branches unless you're like me and just walk through the water to save energy from having to TRY to balance. There is a lot of water streaming and a huge waterfall right now as of 2/24/2019. It's been raining on and off for over a month and half now. It rained about a week beforehand. The waterfall is beautiful right now and something you should definitely go and see before the California drought dries it all up! Going back is uphill and can be pretty tiring if you're not in shape and tired from the beginning of the hike. Be prepared to take a few breaks for pictures and a breather. Overall, I would say this hike is easier than Eaton Canyon, but slightly more difficult that Monrovia Canyon because of the uphill hike back. Either way, go check out the waterfall!!! Take Santa Anita Straight to the top of the mountain! Parking passes are required or you have the option to buy a day pass for $5 at the top. There is no possible way to get lost if you are taking Santa Anita to the top, the one road will lead you straight to a parking lot. If the lot is full you can always turn around and start parking at any safe spot on the road. The hike is very enjoyable and definitely safe for kids and adults as the pathways are pretty open and flat (please still watch the little ones). This trail has lots of trees, over flow of bushes, shade, rocks, and boulders. I have seen anything from bears, deer, snakes, squirrels, and lots of hikers with dogs. This short but lovely hike will take you to a waterfall. Years back when I first started hiking this waterfall was so full and beautiful, sad to say that these days the waterfall is still flowing but just not as luscious. The end of the hike is a bit on the tough part, what goes down....must come up lol. That last half mile going back up is steep and can be a killer on a hot day (always hydrate) but once done you can reward yourself with a snack or meal at the cafe located at the top parking lot! In the 1890's, a few decades after gold was discovered in Big Santa Anita Canyon, Wilbur M. Sturtevant hiked several miles deeper into the canyon than many had before and established Sturtevant Camp. While the "gold rush" in Big Santa Anita didn't amount to much, the trails that were established are the same used by hikers today. Sturtevant Falls, that bears his name, located at the terminus of one of the many branches of Big Santa Anita Canyon, is a 50 foot waterfall that empties into a shallow pool before trickling down a small boulder field to calm meanders beneath the bay and oak scrub. Way back when, no one thought of charging parking up here or ever closing the road at 8 p.m. for that matter. The descent into Santa Anita Canyon from the parking lot was still paved as far back as I can remember, but somehow, the area was a little more wild. No one would think to come here with their CrossFit team, carrying a wireless speaker blaring some god-awful music and destroying the ambience of the creek and bird music for everyone that passes by on the trail. There were not nearly as many eyesores of graffiti on rocks and signs like there are today. Despite being close to civilization, this really was not a weekend hang out spot for people who like to leave lots of trash and stuff behind. Still, there are some pretty places here in Santa Anita Canyon. The canopy of native pines, oaks, and bay trees provides a mostly shaded walk alongside the creek. In the spring, wildflowers are abundant, and wildlife is still present here if you look for it. Everything from hummingbirds and butterflies to black bears and mountain lions can be found here. More likely, you will see squirrels and gnats... maybe some California tree frogs (which don't live in trees, by the way) but they all count too. Somewhere in the middle of that spectrum, the California Newt calls this canyon home. They have the distinction of being one of the cutest and most poisonous creatures on earth. Just under the skin, they have glands that create a potent neurotoxin called tetrodotoxin, similar to that found in puffer fish and poison arrow frogs. Luckily, handling the creatures is not dangerous, and you will die only if you consume or ingest them. Sadly, there used to be a lot more of them here. I suspect that over the years, they were captured, taken home in water bottles, and lived out the rest of their short lives in aquariums and goldfish bowls. Like most wild things, they don't do very well in captivity. Definitely look for them and quiet waters, snap a few pictures of these cute little critters, and then let them go where you found them. Along the same lines, there are posted signs at the waterfall asking folks not to take the "shortcut" up the hillside, to join the Gabrielino trail. Several thoughtless conquistadors roundly ignore the sign, and some idiot chose to share his feelings on the rule by writing "F--K YOU" on the sign. The trail forks about a half mile down the canyon to access the trail above, so don't be lazy or destructive. Go back and keep this area open for future generations. Despite being widely used and parking being a premium--even with the Forest Adventure Pass racket--this is still one of the nicer riparian places to enjoy a morning hike. I say morning, because by afternoon, you're probably not finding a parking place, and you'll have a lot of company. Plan your arrival time accordingly, or be prepared to park in the Arcadia neighborhood and call an Uber. Your phone probably won't work from Chantry Flats, so be prepared to walk back to your car down the long winding two lane highway that brought you here. Probably not a very safe option, incidentally. read more

This is one of my favorite hikes. Length: 1.8 miles one way. Parking: can be difficult if you come after 9am. Parking pass: $5 and you can get it at the general store near the start of the hike. The pass is only good for that day and you have to park at the side of the mountain and it must be behind the white line. Get ready for a small hike just from your parking spot to the start. Make sure to hang the pass on your rare view mirror. There is also valet parking right at beginning of the hike but it will set you back $20 and you have to leave your keys - of course. There is plenty of shade throughout the hike but the beginning and end can get pretty sunny, dry and hot. It starts going downhill first and most of the workout is when you walk back. The last hill back up to the parking area is the hardest since there is no shade and it's steady uphill until you are done with the entire hike. I actually find that more favorable since you actually get to warm up for most of the hike then get into the real workout at the end! The reward for the hike is a waterfall. It is much more impressive during the fall or winter when it's not so dry. It becomes a little sad trickle of water during the summer when it gets to the 90s F and no recent rainfall. Overall a popular hike with 3/4 of the hike inside the forest. Pretty relaxing when you get in the middle of the hike. Downside: hard to find parking. Too many people. read more

The drive to this hike is not for the faint of heart! You will be on a thin road, and some of the locals fly down it. It can be rather intimidating BUT the views are spectacular! Driving up the mountain, you will see cars parked along side it. Take your chances/risk if you'd like. Me, I'd like to come back and my car still be there or not worry about sneezing and falling off the side of the cliff as I'm getting out the car. So I recommend paying the parks, parking lot fee. CAVEAT!!! If you get there early there are parking spots, early is before 8am. And they are FREE. By 9a even the paid lot is full and I don't know what or where to tell you to park at that point (sorry). GO EARLY! If you forgot water, or need a walking stick.. There is a small store on the parking lot, you'll have to visit its cashier if you got paid parking. Cant miss it. Its also where the locals say Mules and Donkeys are called from to drop off supplies to their homes tucked deep into the mountain. You'll notice huge chunks of poop while out there. I wondered how or who had horses that high, but later found a friendly local who spilled the tea! DO NOT think you will have a pleasant bathroom to squat in when you arrive. Signs adorn both bathrooms with warning that due to COVID the bathrooms are either locked or not kept up. Use at your own risk. Them thangs look like they have COVID, SARS, Swine Flue and a few STDs. Even with masks on people are really kind as groups and singles of person trail up and down this hike. I've been going in the summer and its hot as fish grease out! The beginning of the hike is maybe 40% shaded. Think its appropriate during this season to come out in your bikini's, at its hottest 115 degrees. Tan..or Burn? Pick your season and attire appropriately! and wear sunblock! Its a very rocky and sandy truck. Wear sneakers with some grip. Once you start headed down into the low areas of the mountain, it is shaded! And so beautiful! You'll pass pretty streams (hopefully they aren't dry when you go) , a bunch of cabins (which unfortunately some clowns feel they cant use paper to write on so they use peoples property.. Blows my mind how people think that's cool. We cant even read the ish stupid! who are you again? and wtf do you have to say to us all that's so important? I hope they're fined, just rude!) Didn't see much wildlife. I guess due to the high amount of traffic the animals know when to stay away. I think I saw 1 rabbit. And I could have just made that up. I did have to cross a few small lakes, required a little planning and balancing to not fall in and get your feet wet.. But hilarious when someone else does AHAHAHAH!! When you arrive at the waterfall, there are people in it, sitting around, playing music, picnicking. Its quite the "watering hole" experience and really just awesome to see , especially so close to the city. Took my squad a total of 45 minutes to hike 1 way. Total 3.5 miles round trip.
