I requested an appointment online and was booked a few hours later with Erica, who did an absolutely amazing job on my hair. I hadn't gotten my hair cut in over six months, and I've been growing out an awful dye job for about two years now, which was finally ready to be chopped off. She did an excellent job during the consultation trying to figure out exactly what I would need to fix my hair and get it back to looking natural without dying again. I told her what I wanted (hate the dyed color, want to chop it off, cut layers to get as much off as possible without losing length), and she was really clear with me with what she was going to do. She also recommended using a toner to help with some of the brassiness of the ends. She let me know about the cost of the toner ($25 more) and how much more time I'd be there (15 minutes) and stuck to that. I left the salon with a great cut and was receiving compliments for the rest of the week. I've hated my hair and the process of getting rid of the damage from a few years ago, and this is the first time in years I've actually liked my hair. Thank you so much!! As for the rest of the salon, it was really clean, the receptionist was great, and the shampoo/scalp massage was really relaxing. I'll definitely be back to see Erica again! I would give 0 if I could. Absolutely do not go to the Springfield location. My daughter had the most horrid experience here. She had dark hair and wanted to go medium brown. After seeing the drastic and colorful posts they share she called to see if they could do it for her. Yes. Made appointment. She was there over 3 hours and they destroyed her hair. They bleached it several times, pulled and burned her scalp so much that she was in tears and pain. They then tell her after bleaching her hair ORANGE that they cannot give her the color she wanted and she had to go darker. So they essentially damaged her hair and scalp and dyed it back her original color. They couldn't even get the tone correct and it has a tiny still. They said to come back in a week for more toning. Then after all this! They hairstylist had a second appt arrive so sent her off with wet hair!!!! They then charged o we $200 and would charge her again for the toner the following week. This is appalling. She can't move her neck, and her skin and scalp are painful. She cried all day and night. Master stylist? Worst experience ever and I am sick for her. WORST experience ever. Paid my first visit to Jon David Salon and was really happy with the results! I picked Caroline to do my color and cut based on previous reviews and she indeed lives up to the positive praise of other reviewers! She definitely knows her stuff and she's really enthusiastic about what she does, especially where color is concerned. I wanted to add some deep purple to my hair but still look professional. After showing her some pics of what I had in mind she gave me some suggestions and we went with a deep purple ombre look. The cut and color came out beautiful. My only qualm was that the color was not quite bright enough in indoor light but that's partially my fault as I probably over-emphasized the fact that I didn't want it to stand out TOO much and opted for the darker color when she presented me with 2 options. Now I now for next time! I'll definitely go back to her again. And yes this place is pricier but their prices are right in line with other high end NOVA salons. Caroline was also very up front about the cost before she did anything which I really appreciated. I have finally the courage to post a review. During May of this year, I stopped by for a haircut and some full highlights. It's not my first time here. I think that I was clear that I wanted a haircut around my shoulders. My hair was really long after Covid. And I was dreaming for a beautiful haircut because my graduation was coming. I end up with a short hair, more than I expected, I was speechless, the lady was really nice to me, but honestly, I was feeling devastated inside. I dreamed with a haircut and I did not get it. I also asked for some purple highlights and it turn out pink. I pay a little over $200, on my way home I was in tears. And I have been in tears till the day of my graduation. I end up paying more, like $180 for some hair extensions in another place that made me feel more confident for my graduation ceremony. I think, I have been feeling so terrible for some weeks, I've never had my hair this short. I guess due to stress thanks to this event, I have been losing some hair. I highly recommend the salon! I had a really bad experience at the color bar in Arlington, Not only did they push me around they messed up my color and all I wanted was a simple fall like look, Multi dimensions before my auburn hair. As you can see from the pictures below I came in with hot roots and I was very upset about my whole experience even though one of the color artist was busy she fit me in between clients and of course I was grateful just for that. Not only did all of the staff treat me well they worked together as a team they fixed the uneven cut that I had received they fixed the color the shampoo gals were amazing I even got a little massage, and most importantly they knew how to fix my hair and give me the look that I was going for. They have a customer that is not only happy about their service but will be recommending them to friends and family. I spend a lot of time on zoom calls for work so they really rescued my hair and I'm able to save face at work. My hair feels amazing and soft! read more

I got my haircut by Jon David twice. I think the cut was about average. He's a nice enough guy who seems to know a lot about cutting hair; however, the cuts just didn't pop for me. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't great. They ran about 10-20 minutes behind each time and he was always multi-tasking when cutting my hair. When I lived here in 2010-2012 I loved this salon. Kadria and Omida cut my hair and I was always happy with how it turned out. When we moved back this year (2020) I saw Omida again and received a wonderful haircut again. i'm honestly not sure what happened because the first time i went to get a haircut here i had an amazing experience and my stylist was super communicative and made an effort to understand what i was expecting but the second time i went i was so unconfident and unsure about the service i was getting. first off they got my appointment type wrong, they thought i was there just for a wash and dry. i had to awkwardly ask my stylist if i was going to get my haircut because she took me to the bowl and then took me back and immediately started drying my hair. it didn't feel great when i attempted to show my stylist 2 photos of what i was expecting and she just like glances at it and asked me zero questions about anything, which made me so nervous my entire haircut that she was going to cut it wrong because she didn't ask me what i wanted out of my haircut. at the end she didn't screw up my haircut but it doesn't look any different either...? i understand they're a more "budget friendly" salon but my expectations were set so high first time i went and then the second time was the complete opposite. i'm just glad she didn't botch it, but it honestly didn't feel great paying the money i did for such a mid experience read more

I came in for a cut. A specific cut called a bob. I have had plenty of bobs in the past but brought a pic on my phone just in case. My stylist looks at it and nods. I explain that I dont like short hair because I have a hairy neck. So I would like a medium length bob. Get my hair washed and come back to the chair. She turns me around, pushes my head down and starts shaving my neck. Im thinking ok, she is cleaning it up. But then it feels like she is cutting it to my hairline and I thought well surely she clipped the back of my hair up and is just doing some layers to make it look fuller. And then when she went for my sides I was like oh she is going to angle it forward now. So no big deal right? By the point I realized how unbelievably short she was cutting it, it was too late. All of my hair now is above my chin. The cut I have is NOT a bob. I dont know what the f*** it is. I was in so much shock that I fled the salon and sat in my car and cried. I have never had a stylist chop 6 inches off of my hair when I said I wanted a medium length cut. I have a fat round face and now I look like a weirdo. Its literally the worst hair cut of my life. I will own that I probably should have said something when I finally realized how short it was. But in my opinion it was at the point of no return. Im sure if I went in to complain they might try to fix it but the idea of having any more length taken off of it gives me hives. And now I get the joy of asking my husband to shave my neck for me while I wait for my hair to grow out. So I will never step foot in here again. Please train your stylists to a) learn what a bob hair cut is and b) double check about the LENGTH of hair they intend to cut off. She knows what your services are before you walk in and sweetly/respectively helps you fill out your card if caffeine has not kicked in for the morning. She also pre-checks the schedule before you check out to confirm next appointments and is such a lovely person. She is what front desk experience(s) should be. The reason why I am giving this place three stars is because my stylist Kay was so nice, but she chopped my bangs unevenly. I went to another stylist who told me and asked me if I cut my bangs myself I told her no. This is my second visit at Jon David. The first time I went I loved my hair! It was everything I asked for. However.. I just visited the salon about a week ago. My hair is ombre. It's brown naturally and has blonde ends. My ombré had become pretty grown out and I told her (expert hair stylist) I just wanted my ombre to be lifted higher, blended in a bit and give it a brighter blonde. Overtime, my blonde had become a little brassy and I just wanted it to be pretty again. So the color begins. And she had foiled most of my hair and then left me on a timer. She walked away to go assist another client which was fine. Until I realized she wasn't gonna come back to check on me. The shampoo girl took me to the sink and decided when my color was good enough. She also was the one to put the toner in for me and let it sit for the time she thought. Throughout this whole time, my hair stylist never came to check on me. My hair is rinsed from the color and I go back to get a cut. This is when I finally see my hair stylist again. She cuts my hair for a few minutes and leaves to go work on another client. She was not the one to blow dry and style my hair. As I'm seeing the color of my hair I start to see the disappointment. Once my hair is done and styled with this other women. My hair stylist (the one I made the appointment with) comes over and thanks me for coming in. I'm a quiet person and it's hard for me to tell someone I don't like something. But I looked at her and said "it' doesn't seem as bright as I wanted.." and she assured me it was just the lighting in the store since it was cloudy that day. Hopeful, I decided to pay and leave. I bill was over 200$ which is fine but I honestly hate it more and more. I made another appointment for next week but I really don't know how she's gonna fix it. She basically has given me highlights all over. I didn't want that AT ALL! I just wanted my ombre redone. When I came in I showed her pictures of what exactly I wanted and she was the one to first do my ombre. This experience was such a disappointment. I barely saw my stylist and it was no where near what I asked for. I'm worried to go back because I hate telling someone I don't like what they did at all. :/ read more

I had the worst experience here. As a daughter of a hairstylist/colorist who has basically grown up in a high-end hair salon, I know what good service looks like. The only reason I am giving the review 2 stars is because of the front desk staff being very nice and accommodating, my shampoo girl who did everything right, and a follow up call about my service at the beginning of the week. This means nothing, though, if your actual hair appointment was a nightmare. I called early Saturday morning for an appointment to style my hair for a 4:30PM wedding. No cut, no color. Fairly easy job. I didn't want to bother my mother as she was getting everyone else ready for the wedding. They put me at 11:30 with Mike. No information as to wether he was a master stylist or not. I came in a bit late after having trouble finding the salon (it's on the border of a residential neighborhood) I showed him MULTIPLE pictures of BIG curls or old Hollywood curls. He said "ok so just curls." He didn't ask me how my hair holds, what I really wanted to see at the end, didn't even really have a proper consultation with me at all. I shampooed, came back to the chair, and he blow dryed and went to work. I tried to make conversation. He was looking at other chairs and stylists the entire time. No eye contact, no conversation, nothing. He tried using the hair straightener for my curls, which didn't even curl at all. He tried to make them curl with his finger and that also didn't work. If he asked me about my hair he would've known that my hair needs a LOT of hairspray and a regular curling iron for the curls to hold. Maybe even pin curls. After basically doing a half of my hair with the straightener he borrowed a curling iron from another stylist (not sure why he didn't have his own tools) and literally only curled just the ends of my hair. When he was all done he showed me the back and I said "...could you put more curls in??" He said "more??" And I said "yes more, especially in the front". He literally only curled the front few sections of my hair which did nothing at all. At this point I was frustrated but on a time crunch so I just paid and left the salon. By the time I got back to my house, all of my hair was straight but the ends. I basically paid $60 not including tips to have someone straighten my hair and make the ends wavy, which I could do myself for free. The more I think about it the more it bothers me. I was sobbing crying the entire way to the hotel, which I have never done before, and was upset the whole night. Needless to say, won't be going back here again. read more

This salon was my go-to for years - I used to drive up from Richmond when I was in college to get my hair done by Omar. I'd go for cuts on my (very) naturally curly hair, both when I'd wear my hair curly and when I'd wear it straight. The shampoo and blowdry assistants are also fantastic. I have had my hair dyed darker, stripped, cut, highlighted, etc all by Omar. Once when there was a problem with my hair, I came back in the next day and David fixed it for me. Great service. My only problems are that, after a few years, Omar saw my husband and I so much that he began to slack a bit on the service. He'd gotten a little lazy with me - begging me to straighten my hair before I'd go in so "he didn't have to" - and jokingly being critical toward me. I eventually stopped going there just because I found a place across the street from my house, but I'd still recommend Jon David - and Omar - to anyone. I had struggled when I moved to this area to find a good well-priced hair stylist. I normally get a cut with layers and I have really never done anything more with my hair. I have gone to places where I got what I paid for and places where I was overcharged and still did not get a good haircut. I made an apt with David for a full color. He came over and we discussed the color I want. He was very professional, the color came out the exact way I wanted it. This was my first time at the salon. Although I made my apt with David, his assistant, Susan, mixed the color, colored my hair and then blow it out. She did a fantastic job. The only negative feedback I have is that I paid the price for a master stylist (David), his assistant did everything to my hair and the only thing be did was a consultation. First time I got haircut by Irina and it was great,but my next visits were with David. Before last spring I had never dyed my hair (horrible experience in high school doesn't count), but I decided to get an ombre, cuz I wanted a fresh summer look. David did a great job and I was coming back for highlights and haircuts. Yesterday we went crazy and did pink ombre!At first I wanted a baby pink color,but even after lightening my hair was still too dark + David recommended a darker pink,cuz it won't wash off as quickly as baby pink. I'd also want to give props to the stylist who was applying the color,but I forgot her name (I'm sorry). I go out a lot, but don't write reviews. EVER. But I'll do it for this one. First I had an ombré appointment with Caroline. Honest opinion, she was professional, but was a little rude and didn't care to spend much time to get my hair exactly what I wanted. In her defense, it was Sunday afternoon. Of course she wanted to go home and have a life, but it wasn't my fault for scheduling my appointment during her work hours. I wasn't totally satisfied with my hair and the service. Don't give me wrong, I think she's great in terms of skills, just that she didn't care much about what her customers want. I ended up walking out with my hair wet because I felt bad if I had to make her blow dry my hair since she wanted to get off work so badly. A few days later, a receptionist called me and asked about my experience at the salon. I told her exactly what I said above, and she offered that I come back to get my hair fixed with the owner, David, free of charge. So I took the offer. David totally changed my perspective of the salon. He was professional, very detail orientated, and certainly passionate about what he's doing. He fixed my hair 3 times, and made sure it comes out perfect. Since I was a little in rush, after the second time, I told him it looked way better and that I was ready to leave. He said that it didn't look better for him and asked if I could stay a little longer so he could fix it one more time. I walked out totally happy with the result. I have know David for over 13 years. He is hands down the best stylist in the entire Washington DC area. I drove from Maryland to go see David! The entire staff is AMAZING! Zeb, Kristen, Maryella, Wilma, all passionate for their jobs! David - amazing stylist, he listens to you, and gives the best advice on what he thinks will make you happy and keep your hair healthy. I've been unhappy once or twice in 13 years and David has not charged me, and has had me come back in to get it fixed. Extremely professional, and over all really a nice guy. Wilma is the best waxer I know! It doesn't hurt to get your eyebrows waxed by Wilma! I won't go anywhere else in the DC area but here, and when I lived in Atlanta, I actually flew back up to VA every 6 weeks to have David do my hair, that is how much I LOVE David and his salon! read more

Amazing haircut! I haven't had a good haircut in awhile. I am very skeptical and meticulous about my hair. I used to attend to cosmetology school so I can't help to watch the stylist cut my hair. I know when someone actually know what they're doing or not. This girl definitely know her shit. She's very quick with the cuts, without shortcuts, even going back to the ends of my hair to thin it out and blend it. That way so my hair won't feel too bulky and not a blunt across cut. She's pretty fast at blowdrying and styled my hair beautifully! This place really amazed me and I also love the shampoo girl as well KARLA!!! Great head massage/Wash house experience! I think she knew I was loving the shampoo and did it longer for me! HAHAHA I'm such a brat! There's 3 types of level of stylist. I'm absolutely going back! (For good reason) I almost didn't want to write the review so this small gem could be my hidden hair salon. But nonetheless here it goes... so first I had made an appointment via online, which I can appreciate because they are tech savvy. I called day off to see if Qadira had an earlier appointment and they said sure come in at 2 pm instead of 4pm! I get to the salon I was greeted with big smiles and asked if I was new to the salon. The lovely girls showed me to the waiting area and asked If I wanted a beverage. I waited all about five minutes - enough to make a quick call. Then one of the assistants came to get me. Sat me in a chair and Qadria came, we met and I must saw she's a delight. Super friendly and down to earth. When I went to get my hair washed again was greeted with big smiles and pure niceness. A smile goes a long way keep it up ladies :-) I was sat back into Qadria chair and we began discussing my hair and hair needs. She cut my hair beautifully and styled it exactly as I asked. I'm probably the most pickiest person when it comes to people touching my hair and she definitely knew what she was doing and my hair looked amazing afterwards! No complaints! This salon gets my stamp of approval! The customer service was great, even Jon David (the owner) asked me if I wanted a drink at some point. Having moved here from Vermont a year ago, I was used to the run-of-the-mill hair cuts in "normal" (not city) salons. My haircut plus a wash, color and style were never more than $60 (including tip)!! Therefore, I was really hesitant to get my hair done in NOVA after hearing the prices of those services in this area. Well, after I took the plunge and committed to getting my hair done at Jon David, I couldn't have been more pleased. Carmen, my hairstylist, was AWESOME. She did everything I wanted, and really listened to me when I told her what I wanted done. I was getting a cut & color, and I'm extremely picky about my hair. She picked & mixed the colors perfectly to what I wanted, and the cut was so pretty and shapely and bodacious. The blow-out she gave me was absolutely to die for, and I looked so great when I left the salon! Not to mention, I got a shine treatment that really helped my color stay longer and my hair is super shiny & healthy (it was before the treatment, but the color has stayed for a very long time at this point). The only problem I have with this place is that you really have to committ to being there all day, which isn't always the best. Since the JD Salon is the only salon I've been to in this area, I'm not aware if other salons hold this practices as well, but the stylists are working on multiple (and I mean multiple, not just one or two) people at the same time as you, so be prepared to wait a while. However, after waiting, my hair looked so awesome that it wasn't even an issue anymore. I was so impressed with the whole thing. I HIGHLY recommend Carmen, as well. I have been going there for a year or more after I moved her from California. Finding a salon is a tough job when you are particular. I saw someone with great hair who said she went to the Arlington location, but felt that both did an awesome job. So I decided to give it a go. I made an appt on line, which was easy and great for my busy life style. I saw Neetu who listened to what I wanted and did a great job. It takes me a while to trust someone, and because she listed and gave me what I wanted really impressed me. Due to my traveling schedule about 6 months ago I tried to touch up my roots on my own.... worst mistake in my life. I wasted no time to call Neetu for help. She was so helpful and patient. It took a few trips to bring it back to where it was, but I was no longer embarassed to go anywhere. The place is busy on the weekends, but worth the time, as everyone is so friendly. I have made efforts to go during the week, so I can get in and out quickly. I recently moved to Stafford, but continue to travel to Springfield to see Neetu! I have found someone who listens to what I want and dont want, offers suggestions, but never pushes anything on me. Let me start on a positive saying how clean and modern the salon looks. Once you walk in, the staff greets you and asks you if you want anything to drink. I loved the lady who did my hair. She was very engaging, which really made me feel comfortable. I walked out the salon feeling like a new woman because I thought the haircut looked incredible. The next morning... I realized my hair is EXTREMELY choppy as if I cut it myself. One side is also longer than the other side. The layers don't even blend at all either. Both sides don't even match at all whatsoever. Sadly found out my stylist Quadria is no longer with Jon David so I was recommended to see expert stylist, David for full highlights. I wanted natural but modern highlights; "balayage" is the correct term. In that direction, David showed me photos of "sombre" which, essentially, is the softer side of ombré. Loved the look and loved the result of his work! The highlights didn't come out with any copper tones which usually is the case with my hair (I have long thick reddish brown hair). I've now visited this salon a couple of times. My experience was basically the same both times. I purposely asked when booking the appointment for a time that wasn't as busy. Both appointments were during the day on a normal business day (not the weekend). Both times, I had David, who I'm told is the owner. First, the positive: I really like my hair color/cut. The staff is nice. The salon seems clean (something i haven't seen much of in alexandria). The negative: they are way too busy. During both appointments, I had around 30 minutes of waiting time in between walking in on time, waiting to get the color, waiting to get rinsed/washed, and waiting for the cut/style. David, whom I booked the appointment with, only spent about 10 minutes of my nearly 3 hour appointment working on my hair. He must triple or quadruple-book his appointments. He's running around so much, I really never had him as my stylist. I spent most of the time with assistants. Both visits, the assistants were friendly, but forgettable. They never introduced themselves. I felt overlooked the entire time both visits. David seemed so rushed, I don't think the service warrants the premium proving, even if the result is great. The experience really isn't. Note: you have to tip in cash, but there is an atm. I will probably continue to return to this salon just because it's convenient to my house. Also, I've tried a lot of other salons in Kingstowne/Springfield and I have had horrific experiences. I just wish there was a way to get more of a personalized experience at Jon David. read more

PLOT As women we want to be validated, hence the importance of a good consultation. After the BEST consultation on 7-16 (see my earlier review) I was very impressed David asked so many questions and really made me feel like he was listening to me about my concerns, fears of change, health of hair, etc..I am a shameless DIVA when it comes to my hair--and David knew that and addressed it--he has very good communication skills which I don't often find---and still has a humble demeanor. TWIST yes, David had three stylists working on me, but he didn't just "forget" about me--he continuously monitored my color AND he runs a VERY tight ship--meaning that this is a NO B%## S^&%. Salon----I heard NO gossip (not that its always a bad thing--but the environment is VERY professional but not sterile) how refreshing, the focus was on....drumroll.....MY HAIR! I'm the type that needs remedial girl lessons for anything related to hair, and I don't always feel comfortable hanging around salons. However, I feel right at home in Jon David. I've seen Kristian twice for color, highlights, and cut. He does beautiful red hair colors. I don't think the cut is extraordinary, but he did what I asked, and it works. Both times I've been in, around 4 of the assistants have worked on my hair. That does make tipping confusing, but Kristian was glad to distribute tips so nobody was missed. read more
