My friend and I visited the Bloody Mary Festival, and Jomart Chocolates was there. I really liked their toasted marshmallow with toasted coconut chocolate; it was very moist and spongy. The other chocolate was pretty fluffy too. The whole experience felt like you were eating gourmet Milky Way bars. At least the two samples I tried tasted that way. Because it was a pop-up, the service was very one-on-one; they handed the chocolates directly to me and greeted me personally. JoMart is Brooklyn's oldest Chocolate Factory and has my favorite chocolates! I try to stop by the once or twice a year I'm in the area. The staff are always friendly and helpful and patient (there are so many types that it's hard to decide!). I prefer dark for myself and usually get truffles non-pareils, nut clusters, candied ginger. (They were out of ginger this time unfortunately!) They have loose items by weight and also packaged items and candy bars. I have gotten milk chocolate for others as gifts in the past and they loved them! I love their holiday decor and their beautiful holiday-themed offerings. Gee whiz. I could smell the divine aroma of the chocolates right through my mask. Service was very friendly and the owner was nice enough to give me a butter crunch chocolate while I decided, which was really good and so appreciated! I heard some customers raving about the marshmallow chocolates, so I decided to mix it up a bit and get chocolate covered vanilla marshmallows in addition to the marzipans, which are my go to. Not being able to contain myself, I opened the box on my walk home to sample the goodies. The vanilla marshmallow chocolate surprised me in the best way. It wasn't like that gooey marshmallow, but instead was so light and airy and just melted in my mouth. I found a new favorite and I'm looking forward to trying the s'mores marshmallow. I've been coming here for years for my chocolate needs. I like to make chocolate lollipops for special occasions, so I'll usually just drop by JoMart. It's $6 a pound for Merckens chocolate, so it's slightly more expensive than the pre-packaged ones at craft stores, but the quality is MUCH better here. Depending on your mold size, a pound should make 12-15 lollipops. It's the perfect amount if you're only planning on making a small batch. They also sell lots of other things as well, like the molds and other candy-making supplies. They make their own chocolate candies too, so if you're in the market for something specific, they'll probably have it. And if not, you can probably have it custom-made. If you sort and read the reviews with three stars or less, there is a common theme among them: rude staff. Across my five or six visits, I have been served by four or five different women of all different ethnic backgrounds and ages. Every single one of those women was rude and abrasive for no reason. This leads me to a hypothesis: the ownership and/or management must treat/pay their staff horribly for these individuals to be so consistently nasty to customers. There's no other way for me to explain what's going on here. It's very sad. You expect to be greeted and treated well when you enter a beloved and timeless chocolate shop--not the case with Jomart. They can't wait to ring you up for their overpriced chocolates and get you the fuck out of their store. That attitude is quite clear to me and other reviewers. Again, sort and read the other posts and you will see what I mean. I'm leaving them 3 stars because their chocolate is delicious and the green tea milk chocolate bar is divine. A friend of ours had brought us some chocolates from this place. I'll start my review with taste, quality, and lastly costumer service. Taste: the taste of the assorted chocolates we ordered were good. I like the fact the ingredient weren't overpowering over each other, at times that can happen. However depending on the taste theme example: orange flavor-you would want to taste the flavor of the orange. So depending on the chocolate you choose flavor can be overwhelming or underwhelming. 3/5 Quality: chocolates themselves are aesthetically good. Nothing fancy. You'll see the shaping of the chocolate based on the craftsmanship of the chocolatier. 2/5 Costumer service: we drive from Queens about 40 minutes to this store. We were in the mood for some sweets and once we arrived we walked in and said "hello", the counter lady did not reply. Manners out the window real quick. We were looking at the different assortments of chocolate because if we're going to spend $36 a pound we want to see the selection. The counter lady again said "are you ready?!" We haven't been in the store for 5 minutes. As we were selecting the chocolate her cellphone rang, she did not excuse herself as she left us there midway speaking about the selection. As we completed our purchase the lady did not say "thank you" nothing. We instead said thank you twice and she did not reply by any means. 0/5 It's unfortunate that this was our experience we had and what's more unfortunate is that providing terrible customer service can and will hurt your business. My advice to the owner is to reevaluate your employees as they can make or break your business. I could have easily gone somewhere else and felt good about the purchase but moving forward we will not be returning again. read more

The store has the lived-in feeling of grandma's home and since it's been here since 1959, I sense it, not in a bad way as it needs remodeling, no, it doesn't, it's a lovely place that does chocolate right and shouldn't change except for nightly cleaning. The trinkets and cake making materials inspire one to want to get stuff & go home to make a cake even if that won't really happen. Their window displays are too haphazard or dated to convey the true skill & knowledge of the staff who use these instruments as they're the true pros. It's allegedly family-owned but you can confirm it from the love & care here. And thus, my 5-stars. read more

This place is great. There's a section where they sell bakery/cake decorating supplies, but I haven't tried that yet. I heard from a friend that this section has a great selection and the prices are worth buying from. Jomart definitely does not skimp on the quality of their chocolates. The chocolate part of the store has chocolate bars for only 5 dollars with flavors such as matcha (white chocolate and dark chocolate available), orange peel, and strawberry. I think it gets cheaper if you buy a bunch, but I don't fully recall. The matcha one is pretty heavy on the flavor, in a good way. My only gripe is that the wrappers are pretty flimsy, which means that you should just eat the bar in one sitting. The truffles are pretty reasonably priced too. I have tried only a few for now, lavender and caramel, and it looks like I'll have to go back to try more. read more

I reminded her that I was also a customer. They eventually took my information. However, they were also rude to the person who had to pick up my order. Chocolate is awesome though. I gave lots of Chocolate Santas this year, and several milk chocolate menorahs as gelt. I dared the recipients to eat it all in 8 days. I saved one Santa for me. First I ate the head. Yum, I'd forgotten our really good their chocolate is. Then I ate the feet, plenty to enjoy since everything is solid chocolate and I let them slowly dissolve in my mouth. The arms were delightful, thick but melted so nice and slow. Now....Last is the tummy. Oh boy, this was a lot of great chocolate and its a good thing its solid and took awhile to enjoy. This place is a godsend in the middle of Sheepshead Bay when you can't run to Michael's for some supplies. They have rows and rows of chocolate molds, a rainbow of colors for melting chocolates, and supplies for making all sorts of treats. Dear fellow bakers, cakers, and cupcake top makers of south Brooklyn, You know how whenever you start a baking project, there's always that one baking ingredient, tool, or obscure item that you need, but can't find ANYWHERE? You spend hours searching places like Target and Key Food in vain, then resort to browsing online for stores that have exactly what you need, but slowly realize that the shipping times would screw over your party or project deadline. You silently curse to yourself as you sigh at the injustice, and proceed to try brainstorming ways you can kludge or jury rig your creation without the supply you need. Sound familiar? Yeah. Stop it. Go to JoMart. The place is divided into three main rooms. The middle room where you enter is filled with handmade chocolates, truffles, and all kinds of yummy, chocolatey goodies. You can buy stuff in pre-packaged gift boxes, or choose your own combination of pieces per your tastes. The store smells HEAVENLY, and you will likely not be able to leave without buying *something*. And trust me, it will be worth it. They even have these amazing liquour truffles that you MUST try. If you need to bring something to a party or gathering and feel like a bottle of wine is too much or not quite right for the occassion, go with chocolate. Everyone likes chocolate. (And if they don't they clearly have problems.) The room to the left is full of cards and non-edible gifty things, if you happen to need something Hallmark-ish to go with your chocolates. The room to the right is a local chocolatier and cake artist's wet dream. It's not too big a space, but there are sooooo many baking supplies somehow packed into the area that it's rather overwhelming to behold at first. Shelves of rolled fondant and fondant supplies, icing and candy writers, dyes, sugar sheets, cookie cutters of all shapes and sizes, sprinkles, sparkles, edible pearls and glitter, countless chocolate/candy molds, and a ton of other obscure supplies that you won't find in any local supermarket. If you need it, it's probably here. And if it's not, I bet they'll be able to tell you exactly where to get it. The staff here is really nice, too. They'll take the time to explain their products, and help you make decisions about gifts, as well give advice about any projects you might be doing. Their own factory area is right in the back of the store, so you know everyone's got some experience with what they're talking about. The downside to the amazing quality and convenience however, is the price. Shopping here does take a bite out of your wallet, but considering all their chocolate is hand made and their supply inventory is phenomenal and ridiculously convenient, I'm willing to shell out what I need for what I get in return (provided I don't do it too often at least). Definitely not the place for "just a snack" when you're walking by and on a budget, but keep them bookmarked for a visit when you want to try something really special. Or when you need that elusive, last minute, weird silicone cupcake pan or fondant mat. You know, the important stuff. read more

I've gone here for many years, but not the past few. Having bought chocolate by the lb, as well as those boxed molded ones for holidays and what not, everyone has enjoyed the quality of chocolate they put out. I went the other day though, and was immediately turned off by the prices. $24.50 a lb for most everything. Including chocolate covered pretzels, which are large, mainly pretzel (of course) and since most are thickly coated in candy or coconut, you'll probably get less than you think. I think of all the things I could spend $25 on, and chocolate is 2 past the lowest thing on the list. I could get dinner for 2 and candy bars for that. I could get to DelMarVa on $25 bucks of gas and tolls to see family. Not happening. read more

This evening I attended another wonderful event at the Powerhouse Arena - to celebrate the publication of a book - and since the book consists of many photos & interviews with Brooklyn food & drink makers, several of them were on hand to serve some of their products. One of those was JoMart Chocolates (I think it was "Michael", who another reviewer mentioned). Anyway; their chocolates are *great*! He (Michael-?) told me they've been in business - at the same location - since 1959. It turns out that I had cousins who lived right around the corner from the store and I visited them many times during the 60's & 70's, so I might well have gone to the store long ago. Regardless, those were the best chocolates I've tasted in quite awhile. read more

I undid the wrapper and bit right into it. The cocoa content must be about 70% or so. Very rich cocoa taste but not bitter. Some dark chocolates can still be very sweet but not this. Came in today to get 2 sugar free heart boxes one was for my mother 78 yo and a good friend of the family who just had her 99th. Needless to say it was more disorganized as than usual. And they couldn't fulfill my order at the time (2 customers behind me). I would have to come back because the girl couldn't fill the boxes she was busy. So they turned away my business.
