The greeter looked completely disengaged--wrapped in a blanket and appearing ready for a nap. By the time we left, she actually was napping. There's a lot of hype around this place, so I came in expecting something memorable. Unfortunately, the visit didn't live up to the reputation. Been there done that.

The lobster was cold and they put warmed butter on it. Extra drawn butter would have been good. I would either ask for the lobster roll bun, or just get the lobster roll. It was good, and I would go back, but maybe a different location. The breeze became heavy at times, and would be refreshing save for the fine dust coming off the driveway from the numerous cars coming in and out. Paving or gravel would be a wonderful improvement.

I must say though, that we found the service slow at times. And that may be a result of it appearing that waitstaff also shucked oysters and made cocktails. I know extra staff is expensive but this "double duty" created some delays and inconsistency in product.

Today, it's grown into a huge dining hall with a polished system--but the sense of tradition is still very much alive. The setup is simple but memorable: everything is all-you-can-eat except the main course. You'll get bowls of seafood chowder, steamed mussels, salads, rolls, and dessert included with your meal. The lobster is the star, of course--I had the 1.5 lb, and it was perfectly cooked, sweet, and tender. The sides are plentiful and satisfying, but they exist to set the stage for that big plate of lobster. Expect a line before the doors open--it's part of the experience. Service is efficient and friendly, clearly well-practiced at managing the volume. This isn't fine dining, and it doesn't pretend to be. It's about tradition, community, and sharing in a piece of PEI history. Bottom line: if you're on the island, a lobster supper here is non-negotiable. It's as much a cultural event as it is a meal.

While…read moremost oysters along the island's northern coast trace their origins to Malpeque Bay, only those harvested here can officially be called Malpeque oysters. And at Malpeque Oyster Barn, you're eating them just steps from where they're pulled from the water--sometimes within hours. The setting is part of the charm: an old fishing shack that's been turned into a small, inviting dining room with views of the harbour. It's casual and unfussy, the kind of place where the smell of saltwater mixes with the sound of gulls outside. We kept things classic--Malpeque oysters, mussels, and a lobster roll. The oysters were some of the best we had on the island, briny and clean with that signature Malpeque sweetness. The mussels were plump and tender, and the lobster roll came with a side of creamy potato salad (yes, I know, I keep talking about the potatoes--but it's PEI, and they really are that good). It's not just about the quality here--it's about proximity. Eating oysters this close to where they're harvested gives a sense of place you can't replicate off-island. Friendly service, incredible seafood, and an authentic maritime atmosphere make Malpeque Oyster Barn a stop worth planning your trip around.
