This is the "completed work" the bump of cement on the side of the drain broke off, because everyone knows you can't lay cement like that
    Lisa M.

September 2018 I hired Jolly plumbing to fix the exterior water issues I have causing excess water to dump into my garage and basement. I have a recessed driveway and the drain appeared clogged so the initial plan was to open up the exterior drain and connect it to my internal drain for a price of $3,600. I agreed and John opened up the concrete only to discover the pipes weren't there and a sump pump needed to be installed the price went up to $7,600, I agreed. This work entailed using a jack hammer to dig up the concrete at the bottom of my driveway and repair, install sump pump, to install the drain and to smooth out the water damaged parts leading into my driveway. The new concrete was supposed to be slopes down away from the garage so water wouldn't get in. I called Jolly and voiced my concerns that the plumber wasn't doing professional work, trash was left on my property each day, and had concerns when he concrete dug wasn't saw cut so the jack hammer shatter my drive way. When the plumber original went to lay the new concrete he only filled in the immediate areas around the drain. He assured me that even though the trough drain doesn't extend the full length of the driveway rain would not get under my garage door as it had for the last 6 years. I begged for the trough to reach both sides and was ignored. I called Jolly plumbing left multiple messages for mgmnt. I'm a single mom of two little kids and I felt like they ignored me and did a bad job because I didn't have anyone else here to help me advocate even though I was watching the horrible work happening and speaking up. John's solution to the water that was going around the drain was to build tiny little slaps of cement and angle them away from the drain. But of course, you can't lay cement on top of old cement and expect it not to break off, like it did. And I don't even drive into my driveway! Also, when my neighbor (man) saw the poor patch job done on my cement work during the fill he contacted Jolly and someone came out here to extend the cement to my garage covering most of the damage caused by John when he decide not to saw my cement before hammering it. But they only fixed the center portion of the drive way and left the sides warped and an entry point for water to continue to enter my house. He left the sides of my driveway, badly worn from water collecting over the years, installation alone, even though this was supposed to be address in the bid as part of fixing the concrete. Instead, he was lazy and built those little broke cement lips as a water deterrent. I called many many many times to voice this worry knowing water would still get into my basement because I know how it likes to come down the sides of my driveway and into my garage. NO one came out to look at the job. But I was expected to pay the remainder amount of my bill consisting of $3,300. When the job was "complete" I saw a little snub white piece of pvc hanging out of my foundation wall next to the sump pump. John assures me the pump should drain this way. I didn't feel comfortable with it because it seemed like the water could damage the foundation. I asked that it be directed away from the house. Instead of actually draining it away from the house, he put an elbow and small pvc pipe, put insulation around it and all this did was direct the water from my pump literally back into my foundation. As soon as spring came I saw a sunken HOLE next to my foundation, below the foundation line. I sent the pictures to Ryan who barely acknowledged me and said he would send someone out that week. Wayne came and properly buried the sump pump drain into my back yard, as John should of done, but didn't even though I asked him to. In May, I met with Scott, per my request, inside Jolly plumbing's office. Scott's position was that his company had done me a favor by not charging me to come out there and properly bury the pump line. I asked if he looked at any of the pictures that he claimed to have looks at because if he had he wouldn't of said what he just said. He reluctantly looked at the pics and changed the topic. Such a sad way to do business. He was unprepared and had looked at none of the photos I had sent over the last 6 months. He has no photos of my property prior to beginning the work. And states that John didn't damage my drive way with the jack hammer. John did and I assured him of it. But Scott agreed to take a thousand dollars off of the bill. Now I'm stuck with a wet basement and Jolly wants to charge me another $1k to have the concrete repaired that should of been repaired as promised in the bid. I refuse to give them anymore money and have disputed $2.6k that I recently paid them and am completely prepared to represent the case in court.

Joe, my service technician, arrived right at 9:30 a.m., the front end of his estimated time frame of 9:30 to 10 a.m. (He could give my cable guy a lesson in timeliness!) Joe was courteous, and went right to work. He didn't try to up-sale me on any "premium services" like other companies I have used. He also didn't try to sell me parts I didn't need - like the last company that serviced my HVAC unit. At the end of my appointment, all I needed was a new air filter. Joe thanked me, talked about his family business, and hurried on his way with a handshake and a smile. I will definitely be calling Birkley for my next service appointment!

After doing some basic troubleshooting - making sure the connections were fine and then swapping out Nest for my old thermostat, and seeing no improvement, I called for Birkley. They were able to come out to the house within a few hours, and gave me a courtesy call of 15 minutes prior to arrival so I could drive home. The technician went downstairs to do some troubleshooting, and while he was at it, he checked out the heating unit from top-to-bottom and gave it a good cleaning. Long story short, it ended up being that the neighbor had blocked the input/output pipes that led to the HE furnace. Once those were removed, the heating unit worked fine and now I have heat! Great, professional service. Allowed me to be inquisitive and showed me some of the workings of the furnace. At least now I know how some of it works!

I commented that $1400 seemed pretty high. He pulled up the cost of the sump pump on his device. The sump pump the technician installed was $350. He said that if I provided my own pump I would be charged $600 to have them come out and install it. So, my question was, what are the additional $450 for? I am ok paying it, if I know what I'm paying for, but the information from the technician just wasn't adding up to the full charge. I reached out to Five Star to ask for an invoice. It came with a one line summary of the total cost of the work. I asked if they could please send an itemized invoice and explained the reasons I just mentioned above. After a bit of insisting, they forwarded my request to the manager. This was his response: ---- Hi Veronica My name is Garrett and I am reaching out to you regarding a sump pump we did for you on Sunday. I understand there was some confusion about the charges, I am here to help! So as far as a full breakdown goes, We pay around $350 -$400 for the sump pumps, and labor comes in right around $600. The remainder of the charge goes towards our 1 year workmanship warranty, administrative tasks such as tracking, scheduling and being a support system here for you if anything were to happen with it. We stand behind our work 100%. All of our pricing is flat rate, so breaking it down can be challenging in the sense of the charge does not change if we ended up taking longer to install the pump for you. We do it this way for the customer experience, as some plumbing companies do charge per half hour or hour, and can exploit the consumer by 'taking their time' so to speak to run up the bill. We always try to be transparent with our pricing, and just know that we are here to stand behind the workmanship and product we installed for you. Please let me know if there is anything else I can help you with. Best, Garrett Sowers Customer Relations Specialist Five Star Home Services (614) 245-3954 garrett.sowers@fivestargroup.com ---- My response to his: You charge $400 for a one-year workmanship warranty??? That is literally the cost of a brand new pump!! I'm not sure how that doesn't sound ridiculous to you! I also pay the $40 monthly "membership" but there doesn't seem to be much benefit in that either. It just seems unusual that a company refuses to provide an itemized invoice for work performed. I am sure that if you had work done by anyone, you would hope to be able to see what you are being charged for. I need my heating and air unit replaced but I am very glad I had the sump pump experience first. There is absolutely no way I will have Five Star do any other work for me, especially not a high dollar repair! I will find another company that is honest and isn't so hesitant, or flat out refuse, to provide an itemized invoice. It's just a disappointment.

When I called, they sent a technician who told me the repair would be covered under warranty and that I wouldn't be charged. However, after the repair, the unit broke down again less than a year later. When I contacted the company this time, they refused to come out unless I first paid an outstanding bill of $1,200--something I was never expecting based on what I had been told previously. When I asked why I was being charged, the representative explained that the warranty only covered the first year, and since the initial breakdown happened after 13 months, I had been billed for that repair. I then questioned how a $1,200 repair could be justified when the unit failed again so quickly afterward. The rep simply said this was "standard" in his experience, and "just the way it is". Overall, this has been extremely frustrating and disappointing. I paid a significant amount for a new system, yet I've already dealt with multiple breakdowns and unexpected charges. Not what I would expect from a professional HVAC company.

That company inspected our system and confirmed the need to replace it. As we researched further, we discovered that the other guys had very spotty Yelp reviews, so we decided to go with Rechtin instead. Their sales rep Scott was great! He was a former technician so he knew the details of each system very well. He was as honest a guy as you would ever want to meet. Not only did he not try to upsell us on a more expensive unit, he emphasized that the intro level system was very suitable for our house and steered us away from higher priced options because the extra features and efficiency didn't justify the price difference for our needs. As it turned out, our furnace conked out around this time, so Rechtin got a tech out to us quickly to get our old system running until the new one could be installed. The installation took two days, and the team was superbly skilled and courteous. The price of the work was not just fair, but very competitive. These guys took great care of our needs at a good price, and they were responsive when we needed them. What's not to love?
