How do I review this JV? On the one hand my physical therapist is great, on the other hand the gym itself is not really. Despite the large space and rows of machines the atmosphere is somewhat bleak here and only offset for me by the therapy itself, which is personalized and professional. Perhaps the ongoing renovations will add some much needed light and life to energize the space. So it's a 5/5 for quality of PT sessions and 3/5 for environment--4/5 overall. read more

I hurt my shoulder and coudn't lift a thing. The doc said I needed Physical Therapy, said it looked like a rotator cuff injury. Sara Whitney diagnosed me and based on my movement and soreness, she determined that the 3 tendons/ligaments in front of the shoulder were inflamed. She said the goal was to reduce the swelling and strengthen the muscles around it. Only 1 word to describe my experience with Sara: PHENOMENAL! Sara Whitney is amazing. I have gone to other physical therapists for years and never really believed in their ability. I hate physical therapists who hook you up to a machine and wander off. I hate physical therapists who have no knowledge and don't make me feel better. Sara is SUPER smart, she knows he stuff inside and out. She starts each session hands on and really digs in to get the soreness and stiffness out. As she does it, she describes what she's doing in full detail. She made me turn my arm left, right, upside down and would find the messed up ligaments/tendons. With each appointment, I saw improvement. She also gave me very pointed exercises to do at home. She had me repeat them in person and then gave me "homework". It was all very engaging and it worked. In the process, she ended up fixing my posture! I have had bad posture my entire life, not any more! She spent so much time with me, to the point where my muscle memory took over. I have almost ZERO neck pain, which is a state I have never been in! To top it all off, Sara is a very nice person. She got to know me, made me feel comfortable and is an overall really nice person to hang out with. I feel as if I've gained a friend, not just a physical therapist. The location is hard to beat, in downtown area, there are few options. The copay was a little high for me, but it was worth it. 2 months later and my shoulder feels like a million bucks. I've been working with Susana for knee issues since late July and she is phenomenal. I'm a runner and it was really important to me that my physical therapist understand that. She's friendly and knowledgeable and goes above and beyond to help. I've emailed her with questions at midnight and woken up to a response. I've also been going to Chung for chiropractic services and I really enjoy him too. The best part of having my chiropractor and physical therapist in the same office is that they can discuss and figure out the best course of treatment. That's definitely worked to my benefit. Otherwise - the facilities are not huge, but they don't really need to be. Everything is clean and well-maintained. It's in a convenient location for me (as I work at MIT) -- it's only a couple of blocks from the Kendall t-stop. The front desk staff (Krystal and Danielle) are so friendly and I always enjoy chatting with them when I come in. Bottom line: Highly recommend Susana. Highly recommend Chung. If you want to work with two professionals who clearly care about the well being of their patients, those are the ones to go with, although I'm sure that many others at that location are just as great. read more

Best massage ever. Backstory - I don't get massages. I think they are too good and too expensive to enjoy on a regular basis and I've had my fair share of bad experiences. As you jump into the world of massage, you're gonna need to consider a few things. First - What's your goal? Relaxation? Knot removal? Stress Relief? These things matter. A massage intended to remove your knots is going to make you sore the next day. It might even hurt like a bitch as you lay on the table. Maybe not a good choice for first timers. Jennie at JV had me fill out a form that asked what my goal was and tailored the massage to my needs: knot removal (needed some serious digging in) with a hint of stress relief and a focus on shoulders/neck. AWESOME. Second - Forget the awkwardness of stripping down to your birthday suit and just do it for the best experience. The lower back is often a trouble area (for me anyway), and having the interruption of the panty line kinda ruins it. But I've established this from experience. At JV, I chose not to go nekked, but kind of regret it. Third - know your venue. If you get a massage that involves lots of oils and exfoliants and whatnot, ask them if they have a shower facility. It really sucks to get massaged and then have to walk out with a layer of lather. JV used like a massage lotion and then wiped me down with a steamed towel (equally acceptable to a shower, IMO). Fourth - know yourself. If you have sensitive areas or sore areas - let the massager know so it doesn't come as a surprise (loose toe nail, achilles tendonitis, uber ticklish area, etc.). Also, people, the most professional approach is to not have a conversation during the massage. It can lead to awkward discussion and takes away from 100% relief. I explicitly asked Jennie what her style was and told her that I've learned over the years that I can't stand it when massagers talk during the appointment. She assured me that this was her own policy, unless the client asks questions. Perrrrrfect. So anyway; perhaps the massage came at the perfect culmination of massage experiences, and to be honest, I had low-ish expectations. Jennie's massage blew all others out of the water; she could apply the pressure I needed to address my shoulders and accurately worked on every tickle-zone without actually tickling! It was a massage unlike any other and I highly recommend going here, especially if you are looking for a sports/stress relief-type massage. read more

This was one of the best massage I've had. I came here because I got a groupon. I wish I bought the 3 pack!!! I got my massage done by their massage therapist, Stephanie and she was exceptional. We talked quite a bit before the massage so she could understand what I do, my fitness level, and what I was trying to get out of the massage. She showed me a few books to help work on my running technique and posture. I left feeling relaxed, relieved of some stress and tension, but also with some knowledge to make the changes I need. I've been trying to find a place that truly works with you to fix the problems. I plan on trying to work on the things we discussed and will definitely be making another appointment with Stephanie to increase progress. *The only thing is I agree with a former review. When I walked in the receptionist didn't say hello. I believe she glanced at me and just looked away. I sat for a minute or two unsure of what to do, feeling a bit uncomfortable. read more

Having now completed my course of treatment at JVPT I just wanted to reiterate how great this place is. I'm very satisfied with my progress, and plan on gladly paying out of pocket ($70.00 for a 30 minute session) to return on occasion for a tune-up now that my health insurance benefits for this injury have run out. These guys really understand being passionate about sports and physical activity, and they'll work with you to get back to normal activities as soon as possible. I usually prefer female massage therapists, but I made an exception because of Anthony's bio on the website. He was super professional and that put me at ease. Before we began the massage, I had a thorough consultation--one of the most thorough ones I've had before and he tailored it specifically for my needs (back, neck, shoulders, arms instead of full body; I have an RSI from typing). A good massage isn't about mechanically going through motions, but something more. Anthony has that knack to read and intuit the body. The location is within the gym, in the hallway that connects the locker rooms to the pool. [wait there and not the front!!] The therapy room shares a wall/window with the pool. The ambiance of the room itself feels--thankfully!--very different from the gym. I couldn't imagine coming here without being a member of the gym--especially since it's nice to use the sauna/steam room before. read more

As someone who decided that 2013 was the year to simultaneously train for my first half marathon and first sprint triathlon, enter Jennie into my life. My seemingly brilliant idea left me with a lot of weird knots and kinks in my legs and lower back. I've been to many different massage therapists, but there is something in Jennie's approach that makes her stand out and above. Through a combination of both deep tissue kneading and different stretching techniques she is able to release my crying muscles, but in a way that is strangely calming and relaxing rather than painful. While I've had other experiences where I'm biting my tongue to divert the pain sensations, with Jennie she is still applying a serious amount of pressure, but I find myself in a soothed-dreamlike state, nearly drooling into the face cushion. It wasn't always pretty, I had some serious imbalances and strains from my various athletic pursuits, but everytime I walk out of Jennie's massages I feel amazing and ready to get back into training. Jennie is super professional, knowledgable - as she often suggests ways to keep those muscles stay ironed out, and my current go-to option when I'm in need of an athletic massage. read more

Anthony is the only massage therapist I trust! He is the only one that can get rid of the knots in my back and relieve the built up stress I'm holding. The therapist whom we worked with - Jocelyn M. - is highly knowledgeable, competent, patient, and meticulous. Only after a few physical therapy sessions with Jocelyn, the conditions of our injured muscles/labrum improved a lot. Moreover, Jocelyn's treatment plan resulted in a speedy and steady recovery which is what we wanted. Mollie is great!! She gets 5 stars!! Have been going to see Mollie for deep tissue/sports massage for almost a year now. She's great! Sometimes I wonder how she gets that much power into digging out the knots, but she does it, every time. Additionally, I appreciate that she does the job seriously, professionally (no chit-chat during the massage- love it) and takes her time when it is needed. Have definitely gone over the one hour a couple times which I think is very kind of her to care for my muscles like that. She's always a pleasure to chat with after the massage is done. Clearly takes her work seriously. The only reason I'm giving this three stars instead of 4 or 5 is the location of the massage rooms. Unfortunately, it's right next to the pool in the CSC, so you hear a lot of people walking past and speaking loudly over the splashing (if it was just splashing, it'd be pretty nice!). Move the venue and it'd be awesome! Granted, I think JV is less expensive than other spas, so maybe you get what you pay for. read more

I am a former rugby/boxer/lacrosse player and came here after both my 2nd and 3rd shoulder surgeries. I worked with Andrew Millet, who is great. Besides being a genuinely good guy, he definitely pushed me hard and I made some significant gains in getting mobility back in my shoulder. Just had The. Most. Amazing. Massage from Caitlin Dangler at Joint Ventures. She is a tiny little woman with amazingly strong hands who is not afraid to really lean in and cause some pain on the way to relief. I also started PT with Jessica S several months ago. She discovered the cause of my chronic low back pain and has helped me to overcome it. Though I am able to complete my rigorous workouts with my personal trainer, I still check in every few weeks to make sure that I am aligned and strengthening. It is very helpful to have Jessica checking in on me and my progress. She is extremely thorough and spends extra time in between patients to see me training on the gym floor, which both my trainer and I appreciate. I had a wonderful experience working with Jessica Simbro after my shoulder surgery. I had zero range when I first went to see her and couldn't even lift my arm to shake hands with her. She drew up a structured schedule early on and we pretty much stuck to that timeline. She obviously knows what she's doing but the best thing is that she took the effort to explain the origins of pain and the mechanics of physiotherapy that would help alleviate that pain. It took 2 months but I'm back to sports grade motion again. I hope I never have to go back to a physiotherapist ever again, but if I do need I know whom to look up. read more

My PCP got me a referral for PT to treat my back and my knees (different problems with the left and the right knee). As this place was close to where I work, I just walked in to make an appointment. The administrative assistant looked at my referral and asked me to pick one thing. Apparently they do not understand that the body is a whole thing rather than the sum of it's individual parts. Here's a news flash - different parts of the body influence each other. It is completely impossible and highly irresponsible to consider them as completely independent. I was actually having back trouble and my masseuse worked on it specifically, and this morning it's completely gone! As such, I have high expectations; if I'm only going to get a massage once every year or so, it had better be good. Well, it was. Ammon was great, we talked a little before about what I wanted from it (relaxation/stress relief) and he definitely struck the right balance of pressure. Once I have met Anthony Dallesandro, a massage therapist, at the front desk, and he convinced me to try a massage for the first time in my life. It was great. Body felt very nice and relaxed. I never write reviews. Ever. However, my experience here was so good that I felt like I was doing the world a disservice by not letting them know where to go for the best deep tissue massage. Jenny was brilliant. I have very bad posture and because of my desk job I sometimes get the worst pains in my neck area. Yesterday it hurt so bad that i thought i was going to pass out. I was able to get an appointment for 30 minutes and she really worked and stretched my muscles. It was exactly what i needed and the relief was almost instantaneous. In fact I didn't even realize i had limited mobility. Needless to say, I feel much better and will be going there more often. I have been to lot of massage places and therapists but this one outranks the rest of them by a land slide. I highly recommend going here if you have a problem area. read more

I waited 3 months before a persistent pain and inability to run due to runner's knee forced me to go visit my Doctor. I was referred to Join Ventures by a friend and I started my sessions early this summer. I had a great experience working with my therapist Laura Demchuk (She's awesome!). The exercises and explanation helped me recover in just 8 visits and a combination of regular exercises at home/gym. The staff was always very helpful. Diagnosed with a partially​ torn rotator cuff, and their expertise was top notch, loved my PT, extremely knowledgeable and professional, highly recommend, only reason I didnt give a 5 was due to the fact I had an abscess for 2-3 weeks that I would expect they could have diagnosed sooner, unfortunately it burst and I don't believe they could have known, other than that, friendly, knowledgeable, and got me back on the right track, kindly be informed I went to the Kendall location for 10 sessions, unsure about other locations. read more

I started off going to the Kendall Square location when I worked in Kendall, and had a great experience. I needed more PT starting last fall, and now that I work in Watertown but live in Brighton, I switched to the Packard's Corner/Comm Ave location. Gail at the front desk is incredibly helpful and my therapist Ben has been a lifesaver. He works in collaboration with my orthopedic specialist and together we are all determined to get me back to pain-free running ASAP. Some appointments are functional - weight-lifting in the gym, stability work, etc. Others are purely treatment - ultrasound, Graston, or dry needling. He always has early AM appointments which I appreciate, because I like to be at work at a decent time. The gym is always dead, even after work, and so I've been tempted to work out here as well but it's just too dang expensive. I like that this location (just like Kendall) is within the gym so I can also use the showers and locker rooms after particularly strenuous/sweaty appointments. There's no parking but there are plenty of meters right out front and resident parking along the nearby side streets. read more

The best masseuse LISTENS first! And that is exactly what Sara did so that I got an excellent massage! I'm a senior citizen, so I have some aches and pains and Sara totally got it right. I had one of the best massages ever! At the end of the session Sara gave me lots of tips for stretching, yoga postures and breathing exercises that would help reduce my stress level and keep me more flexible. Currently working through a dislocated elbow with Sancho. I was very resistant to putting in the time because the joint is so inflamed but Sancho has given me a fantastic series of exercises coupled along with some massage and stretching and my elbow is almost back to 100% in a few short weeks. I've been seeing Susana since September for physical therapy for an elbow and wrist problem. Susana is wonderful. She is friendly , genuinely caring, and most importantly very knowledgeable. She is analytical and accesses my specific problems to tailor the therapy to get results. She explains how the exercises work and what they are intended to do. Susana has helped me immensely. If you are looking for the best, make an appointment with Susana. I like that this facility provides treatment in private rooms and does not use assistants to provide any of the treatment. This provides focused, individual treatment with no distractions. I've been to another organization where this was not the case. Believe me, it makes a big difference. Danielle at the front desk is efficient, helpful, and friendly, She keeps up with referral and insurance issues and let's me know if there is anything I need to deal with. I received a massage from Anthony Dallesandro at JV in the Commonwealth Sports Club through a Groupon I bought earlier in the year. Anthony gave me one of the best massages I have ever gotten. Anthony asked where any problem areas were as well as the pressure I am used to. He also asked to me to speak up if anything was uncomfortable/too much/too little pressure during the massage. He focused on my tensest areas while giving me an all-body massage that was really relaxing--I may or may not have fallen asleep for a few minutes! He just has a great energy that put me at ease. Afterwards he spent a few minutes going over what he found/where I should focus on stretching/warming up. That was really helpful and showed that he put a lot of care and attention into the massage. I also loved that it was so close to where I live--an easy commute on the T or by car. read more

I originally went to Joint Ventures for Physical Therapy (Kendall Sq location, great work!). Then I got a Groupon for a massage and have been a fan ever since. When I get the chance, I go to Anthony at the Brookline/Allston location (called Kenmore according to Yelp, but that is a different location). I tend to like a lot of pressure, and he provides it. I'm also a runner, and have past injuries, which he pays attention too. Plus, he noticed I had some tension in my upper back/neck and showed me an exercise to help alleviate pain. I got a deep-tissue massage from Stephanie last night, and it was one of the more relaxing treatments I've ever gotten. She is gentle, careful, and thorough in her technique, and she asked all the right questions before, during, and after the hour. At the end of the massage, she also inquired about whether I felt that any part of my body needed more attention---something other massage therapists don't normally ask---in an effort to prevent a client leaving unsatisfied. Her friendly demeanor and her love for what she does made this visit to JT a very rewarding experience. I hope I can see her again soon! read more

Just visited for the first time and got a wonderful massage from Stephanie. She asked fantastic questions and was so responsive to my answers. The only reason this is a 4 instead of a 5 is the office set-up. The room we had was open at the top of the wall to the main area, so I could hear music from the other room, doors, etc. Also, there was a large window in our room, so - despite the shades - it was impossible to get it really dim. Not the most relaxing atmosphere. All in all - the PERFECT massage, and totally worth the slight weirdness of the surroundings. I'll definitely be back. read more
