I was a licensed auto dealer in Oregon and California for over 25 years. I've been involved with, at many levels, lots of dealers, new cars, used cars and wholesale, in both states and even written a book (years ago) on how to survive this industry and if at all possible, avoid it altogether. The practices used my so many dealers, both new-car and used, is not an enviable one and the well-deserved reputation brought upon this profession is an unfortunate and difficult thing to deal with for the few decent individuals and companies that do exist. And now the good news! Florence, Oregon is honored to have one of the very best of these few decent companies that I've ever come across. I've only been lucky enough to have lived here since 2017, but have done business with Johnston Motor Company a few times now regarding my trusty 2004 Ranger. And then last week, I found the exact used car I've been looking for now for a few months, and every one of the folks I talked to in the process of "making the deal" have been just amazing. My well-tuned built-in BS Sensor still works very well, and the needle didn't even wiggle the whole time! These folks are my friends and neighbors here and I was treated as one of them. On this particular car, a like-new 2016 Ford Edge, my out the door cost was nearly identical to the figure I had in mind would be my offer, so no haggling was involved. The whole transaction was a pleasant interchange. The staff (that I met there, about five of them) all live here on the beautiful Oregon Coast, some all their lives, they seem to know everybody in town, and when I left there with my new ride I felt more like I'd just shared a get-together with neighbors than having survived a car purchase. I've received the same level of performance from the service department, plus having my Ranger repaired there was the same kind of experience. I brought my f150 to have the IWE system fixed. Instead of them fixing it they disabled it so the front axles are locked all the time now. Plus they charged me $200.00 to disable it when fixing it the correct why would have cost $350.00. It still needs to be fixed the correct way. When I called to ask what the heck. The head guy at the service counter told me it was what ford said to do. I looked that up on the ford's website. It clearly states that it is a temporary fix. I did not ask for a temporary fix. They are refusing to fix it the the proper way. How I asked for it to be fixed. They simply state that is ford's recommended fix. Funny I did not know that ford owned my f150. I took my car in for repair with a problem that my local people could not fix or diagnose. Johnston figured it out quickly and quoted me an affordable price. The people are friendly and efficient. (Florence customers shouldn't find this a problem, but there are drawbacks for me as an out-of-towner. 1) Although they kindly offered to give me a ride, that was for within the town and they don't have loaner cars. Okay seriously. I can't even believe the service I received from these guys. My car was needing some body work done from a small wreck my husband got in a few weeks back. My insurance was not going to pay for it for a few (dumb) reasons so I was going to pay for it myself. SO first reason why I love Johnston Motor: 1) when I went in for an estimate, Pat, took the time to fully look at my vehicle. He spent maybe 20 mins just looking and taking pictures. He then took the time to look at prices of parts overnight to give me a full estimate. He also bent one of my parts on my car back to help it drive a little better for free during the estimate! Not only was he very very nice, we had a good conversation and could tell he was a good and solid honest human being. That goes a long way for me. I went to another place in town for an estimate and even though their estimate was lower than Johnston Motor's, I chose them anyways because their customer service literally 1000x better. I pay for great customer service. 2) When I dropped my car off to be worked on, I called a taxi because I didn't have a car to get back home (duh). While i was waiting, Mel, ran outside and told me i was crazy for calling a taxi. He said he wold give me a ride home. So I canceled my taxi and got a ride from Mel. My goodness!! Mel is such a great human being as well! We had a great conversation! Such a nice guy. He also said he would have given me a ride to the shop when it was done!! 3) Pat gave me a minimum price estimate and a maximum price estimate. As well as a time estimate. He went below the maximum estimated for BOTH. He only took 4 days to fix everything when he said it could take a week to two weeks. And the price was just in the middle from minimum and maximum. I'm so used to sleazy guys lying and making things more difficult, pricey and time consuming. 4) THEY WASHED AND DETAILED MY CAR!! My car was a mess due to working long hours for days on end and not having time or energy to clean. It takes a toll on you after a while and to not only have my car fixed and driving better than ever, my car was clean and LOOKING better than ever!! All I have to say is Pat and Mel made my experience sooooo great. I will be recommending this place to as many people as possible. Our Escape purchase went flawlessly. Great deal. The 3 stars is for service department: went in for a oil change and to fill any low fluids. The tech checked filled windshield washer fluid. 24 hrs later low fluid warning came on. Lifted the hood it was almost empty. Makes me suspicious of what else they didn't do. read more

Took my Ford here for a heater repair. The problem was diagnosed as a blend air malfunction. I was given an estimate of some $300.plus for the repair. I accepted and left the vehicle with the service manager. When the service manager called to have me pick the vehicle when the repair was completed the first thing I noted was the heater was not functioning as it had in the past. And was not functioning on auto at all... I returned to the dealer and after some discussion was told to return the vehicle some 3days later for further diagnosis. Upon returning and leaving the vehicle for several hrs, i was called and told my vehicle was ready. Upon picking it up I was told the heater was functioning as designed by Ford and there was nothing further they were going to do for me. I left and went home with the heater still not working properly. I. Called. Ford customer service and opened a complaint. I must say, ford made me feel valued as a customer, unlike my experience at Johnson Motors. Anyway, after being referred to Kendall Ford for a second opinion. They agreed the heater was not working as designed. Kendall conferred with Ford and made an appointment for further assistance. Long story short, Kendall Ford in Eugene repaired the heater back to my satisfaction. And I might add, without charge. My whole complaint with Johnson's service manager is that I felt as if I was not being listened to and was being dismissed. Nothing I said was taken seriously and I felt helpless. My suggestion to the service manager is, when a customer tells you he has driven the car 40000 miles and 6 years and something is wrong, listen and be willing to explore further. Don't dismiss the customer and send him home unsatisfied and disappointed. read more

I had an ongoing problem with my car trunk lid opening by itself. Went to Johnston Ford and the body shop manager and a body technician figured out the problem. After looking it over the technician said " There has to be a solution" and they took the time to figure it out. Due to a rear end collision and a not-so-good body shop in LA the trunk and back fenders were out of alignment. Problem fixed by disconnecting latch on inside of trunk, which I never used anyway. All I have to do is open it with my key now. Problem solved and I really appreciate their expertise and taking the time to help me. read more

My buying experience at Johnston Motors was the best! No pressure, good prices, and honest answers to questions. I bought a new Focus. Because of the excellent buying experience, I brought my 1993 F-250 to their Service Department for transmission work. I had received a quote from another local auto shop, and Johnston Motors matched it. I wound up with a rebuilt transmission that is still going strong. All of my vehicles are now serviced there, and when a new vehicle is needed, Johnston Motors is where I will shop. read more

We drive an hour each way to get to Johnston instead of using the Ford dealer that is 15 minutes from our house. Both Service (Jeff) and Auto Body (Pat) have gone well above and beyond what is expected of them. They are very pleasant to work with and actually CARE if the work gets done quickly and correctly.
