Came referred from our real estate agent when selling house in April, May 2015. Roof install was not good but resolved. But the story didn't end there and hence a need to post a poor poor review.
Job done April/May 2015. We paid in May 2015.
Feb 2017 (22 months later) out of the blue some person using their company email emailed me she was auditing their books, had no record that we paid and demanded immediate payment or produce a cancelled check. Hmmmmm... 22 months later for a $7000+ check.
Our agent responded immediately because the payment, roof warranty and the lien waiver were handled at his office. He produced the lien waiver signed by the Johnson Roofing's owner. For the next 2-3 mos Johnson Roofing never explained why we would have a signed lien waiver by the owner if we hadn't paid. It's not hard to produce a cancelled check if there is one to be found. And one gets paranoid that maybe it was deposited in the wrong account, or a different amount was processed. I wasted hours on the phone with bank and looking through the history of multiple accounts. Never a word of apology, acknowledging the inconvenience nor explaining why 22 months. Quite the opposite, the owner Steve tried to put me in the hot seat by saying we never paid sales tax to the state for this job (which Dept of Rev says is contractor's responsibility, not customer's). He admitted the deposit was his responsibility but maybe it got rejected on our end, which he would know because he'd be charged NSF fee. I said I'd send a settlement payment to reflect my opportunity cost and expenses. Instead of saying yes or try to negotiate for more, he actually texted pay now or he would send us an invoice for the full amount + interest going back to May 2015. I ended up sending the settlement check anyway to close out this unusual and stressful issue. Our guess is they lost the check and lost track. Either they are so blinded they don't see their fault, or their ego is too big. Lucky for them we actually have funds to pay.
On the installation experience, Johnson Roofing and I agreed that my general contractor would cut some siding to accommodate the flashing. But they had him do more when I wasn't there that roofers normally do. And on top of that, they insulted him by saying he didn't know what he was doing. Our contractor texted me photos of poorly done flashing they installed, clashing colors of black and brown, and additional shingles they knocked down but didn't bother telling me or reattaching. I'm not sure if they would have resolved if our agent hadn't stepped in since he has weight of the entire real estate who is always referring roofers to their buyers/sellers.
It's too bad they treat customers poorly and when they make mistakes, they can't even apologize. read more
