Having a few friends recommended this place I planned on spending my money with a smaller local business vs one of the big box stores, but that definitely won't be the case going forward. My wife purchased me a new rod and reel as a gift from Johns Sporting Goods 5 days prior to them having a discounted price on the reel purchased. I'm going on a 3 day fishing trip so I planned on dropping in and buying gear for the trip and see if they would be able to price match their special and just get a credit to spend there. The rep immediately and in a very rude way said "nope not doing it not a chance". Now as a new customer and looking to spend way more then the difference and going forward you would think they have a better way to go about things. So while their selection is pretty good (only reason for 2 stars) the customer service is horrible and they have not only lost a customer, but I will be telling others in the fishing community about my experience and what to expect when shopping with John's Sporting Goods. read more

Plain and simple - these guys are hard core fishermen who will tell you what you need and where to go to succeed in catching fish. They hold some seminars (check out YouTube videos) that are awesome. They have lots of gear, but mostly focused on proven gear that works. read more

Whats up with the chubby dude who seems to hate life and working here? My wife and I are fairly new to fishing, but know enough and know the rules. I told chubby we were interested in fishing for Halibut and chubby said "don't bother". That's it, just don't bother. We pressed and he finally exaulted his wisdom upon us, "need to go further north for Halibut". Enlightened, we felt blessed with his incredible knowledge and asked for some Herring to go salmon fishing instead. "Its in the freezer behind me." I stood there waiting for the Oracle to produce the herring but he did not. I said could we get a pack? And genius said "its self serve, get it yourself." I miss John. Johns never made newbies feel dumb, nice goes a long way. I give Johns 6 months and it's a shame to say goodbye to the Everett gem, we won't be back. read more

The shop itself and the inventory selection are fine and the prices are normal. When the big box places are sold out of whatever lures are in-demand John's will probably have them. The shop staff don't adhere to covid rules however and it looks like it they haven't been the entire time. Neither do the regular customers. I would avoid if this bothers you. read more

Walked into the shop looking to buy some supplies, and the chubby young man at the counter would not want to sell me some supplies because he suggested it was not a proper fishing season. All I did was ask if he could point me to the area in his shop where I could gather certain supplies. He argued I should not spend my money on buying referenced fishing supplies, up until the right fishing season. What makes this very odd, is that I insisted to buy some certain supplies, and the chubby young man was getting upset and he did not want to sell me some supplies. It is one of the most idiotic behaviors I have ever seen from someone who should be motivated to sell. After all, generating revenue is the basis (or should be) of any for profit business. One of the dumbest things I have ever seen. For sure I will not be returning to John's Sporting Goods in Everett, WA. read more

Online Buyers Beware! Ordered a fishing reel from their web site. Got an order confirmation e-mail within minutes. Three days later I get another e-mail indicating "sorry" but they will not be filling my order because it was out of stock. Nothing on their web site indicated that the item I was ordering was out of stock (it still doesn't) otherwise I would have moved on to the next online store to make my purchase. No.... they waited 3 days to let me know. Apparently they do not value their customers (or potential customers) or their time. Very unprofessional (not to mention lazy) and inexcusable in my view. John's Sporting goods offers a great selection of quality products. The entire staff is helpful and listens to questions and replied with educated information. I picked up a copy of John's spiral bound book that hopefully will help me to catch more fish! The GPS settings and other information supplied for the fishing areas in the Puget Sound should allow me to narrow down the search for elusive salmon, halibut and crab! John has also published some fishing how to videos on You Tube that were very helpful for me to learn new bait techniques. I enjoy shopping in a locally owned store that is merchandised and stocked well. Staff is always available to give pertinent information in order to make an informed buying decision on the correct product! After taking a few years off from fishing I returned to John's Sporting goods to pick up a few choice items. John and his wife were still behind the counter as I hoped they would be giving advice out. The advice is priceless as forgettable as I am, the gear is typically $2.00 under what WallMart @ Cabela's charge, I know this because i keep up on it, but then u add the advice and the customer service,stalked shelves the family business is worth going the opposite direction. If you are forced to buy here check your receipt. I stopped here to buy a counter for the downriggers that these incompetents couldn't fix. The price on the counter was 15.95 in large print. The owners wife is running the register and charges me over $20 for this single item. When asked why she charged me so much she blamed it on the computer pricing and yelled at her son. I ordered a crab pot puller on 10/2/12. The mounting parts I needed were hard to determine but the sales guy who took my order helped me figure out exactly what I needed. When the puller arrived it had a slight defect, the arm was slightly bent. I emailed about the problem and had a response in about an hour. The customer service rep was very understanding and promised to rectify the issue asap. A few hours later the manufacturer rep called and inquired about my issue. Again, very helpful. She promised to send a new part out at once. Today the part arrived 10/11/12, and it works perfectly. Thank you for the knowledgeable sales and prompt customer service! I think this must be a great place to shop IF you're male. If you're a woman, not so much. Lots of avid fisherMEN I've talked to love this place. The other reviews suggest that this is a great place to go if you are new to the sport and looking for advice. I have fished before, but only in eastern Washington. I am interested in salmon fishing on this side of the state. I decided to give it a try. I think I made a couple mistakes: 1. I was wearing a skirt and heels when I visited, 2. I am obviously female. When I entered, a man was there with a couple kids buying licenses. While she was completing this customer's transaction, the woman behind the register looked disdainfully at me standing there holding my inherited fishing rod and said, "What do you want?" Not, "I'll be with you in a minute." Not, "Hi there." No smile. Just a scowl and, "What do you want?" as if I had asked her for something before she'd had her morning coffee. (It was early afternoon, for the record, and I was waiting silently and patiently behind the current customer, smiling because I was thinking about how fun it was going to be for those kids to go fishing with their dad.) When I explained what I was after (a considered opinion on whether my inherited fishing rod would work for Pink salmon, and some advice about gear), the owner quickly interceded. Where did I want to fish? I said I wasn't sure yet whether I would be doing salt water or fresh water fishing. "I can't help you until you know. The two set ups are TOTALLY different," he said. I was perplexed. I didn't tell him I'd already done some research, and that two experienced fisherfolk (one male and one female who is a fishing guide) whose advice I'd taken in said there were only slight differences, which meshed with the reading I'd done. He exhibited exactly zero interest in giving me any idea what those differences were. His demanor was basically one that suggested I didn't know anything and didn't deserve his time or attention. I was the only customer in the store, but apparently not worth his time. Shifting conversational gears, I asked his opinion on the rod and whether it would work for salmon fishing. A friend of mine, an avid humpie fisherman, who had attended my grandfather's funeral with me had selected it from his extensive collection and said it would work for salmon fishing. When I presented it, John frowned at it and said, "You put the reel on backwards." I didn't tell him that he had ASSUMED that I was the one that put the reel on. I didn't tell him that my grandfather, a man who very successfully gun and bow hunted and fished his entire life, had set up the rod that way. I didn't tell him that the guys at Cabela's had restrung the reel and hadn't seen any problem with it. While giving me a disdainful look, John turned it around and positioned it in a way that looked upside down to me and with the fishing line twisted around it. He smirked in that contemptful 'You are a dumbass novice' way when he handed it back to me. When I asked a friend about this later, he said that it's the way some people set up trolling rods for fishing the Sound. So, okay, maybe to this guy it looked backward based on his fishing experience. If this is the attitude she has to deal with, I understand why the woman who works here is so cranky. He did suggest I get a rod with a spinning reel, which was sort of helpful. I just wish he could be helpful without being condescending and disdainful. I left. If I ever go back here, it will be because there is absolutely nowhere else I can get what I need, and I will bring some giant, rugged mountain of a manly man with me to stand there grimly and silently with his arms crossed while I try to get what I need. Will never shop here again. Went in today looking for worm gear for my Abu (that I bought there years ago) They no longer sell parts. Lady says "If all you guys bought more then just parts maybe we'd still sell them. No one fixes a toaster anymore" Parts don't get used and worn out like they do on my reels and it isn't cheep to replace the reel! Little did she know I was also planning on looking for a new rod and reel for float fishing, and all the gear to go with it. Guess Teds will get my business now. read more

I took in a Calcutta that was under warranty, it was locking up and he said he could fix it in a jiffy. The reel cost over $389.00. Didn't hear from him for several weeks so I stopped in said he sent it into Shimano and they said they couldn't fix it so he reached under the counter and handed me a replacement reel that was worth $100. When I asked him why I was getting a replacement reel he said this was it. Will never have him do anything again. Hope he enjoys fishing with my reel. Do not take anything to him to have worked on especially under warranty. read more

If you returned a broken rod and John would not take it back it is probably is because operator error. John gave me a lot of advices on how to fish where and when. He even encouraged me to get out and fish (hey is good for business right. I like his selection and appreciate his knowledge. Not sure what the deal with the post from Marcial S. must be a different place. Because at Johns Sporting Goods store in Everett is one of the best tackle stores I have ever been in. It is packed with everything you would need to be out in the Puget Sound waters. Crabbing, Shrimping, and Fishing yes, fly fishing gear too. My wife and I drove down from Whidbey Island and got completely set up for this years shrimping. John and his wife was very pleasent to talk too. Every person that came in the store had all their questions asked. John's newsletter is awesome! great information on what is being caught, where and gear used, plus get a 20% coupon to use. Ask them what is biting and where if you want to catch fish. They may be a little less than your best friend, but they get asked those two questions countless times an hour. Their prices are within alignment for the area and they haven't been out of stock on anything I've needed when I went in. I went to John's on the advice of my hardcore fishing friend after being ignored at Cabelas. Since I haven't been fishing since my childhood, I needed tackle and a lot of help. I don't think I could have gotten better service anywhere! I wasn't sold a bunch of stuff I didn't need and when I left the store my gear was rigged up and ready to go. Everybody in the store was helpful and shared both fishing and cooking tips. There were guys and gals working in the store and as a woman who had been ignored previously, I'd say if you want help regardless of your gender, go to John's. They stock the stuff that works and is of good quality, including freshwater gear which is what I was after. I'll go back for my next purchase for sure. read more

I bought a rod from John's this year. It snapped just a couple weeks later when out on the river. He replaced it on the spot. Since i started bank fishing a few years ago I've been getting all my supplies from Johns and he has helped educate me from the start. I support this shop because I often call for fishing reports and get a lot of knowledge from his newsletters also. It can be hard starting from scratch knowing where to go in the Puget Sound, his maps are worth their weight in gold. In addition to being a local shop with good gear his prices are competitive with big box stores. After seeing these couple of negative reviews I must retort. John has set the standard for what a tackle shop should be. I frequently find that their prices beat the larger chain stores and as a bonus you get the benefit of John's experience. I always enjoy my trips there and to catch up on the latest in the NW fishing world. Not only is it a great store but John makes sure he gives back. I know he is very generous in donating to the NW Salmon Derbies and Salmon for Soldiers. But for the naysayers, nothing in life is perfect. They may not have been able to fix your down rigger but they've fixed mine and countless others without fail. Have always given me a good deal, even after a sale may have ended. Since I buy quality gear from John's, I can't say I've ever tried to return a broken rod but if it's a defect then I'm sure he would recognize that. Lastly, quality control is a b**** and if the barcode on an item gets marked wrong, well, it really is the vigilance of the consumer that comes into play (most people I know would just bring it to the attention of the store so they can fix it instead of getting all belligerent about felling scammed). John's really is more than a store, it's a part of the makeup of the North Sound fishing culture. read more
