The service is really unsatisfactory here. Everyone around us had water and syrup for their breakfast pancakes. We never saw our waitress after getting our food. The waitress team was working mostly inside and we were seated outside. The food was subpar and expensive. We tried to flag someone down but I ended up having to get up and ask the hostess for our check. Just some advice to them: if you are going to start speaking no Spanish about someone you should probably make sure that person doesn't understand what you are saying. My husband and I decided today to take a ride out to Montauk and go to John's pancake house we hadn't been in over 10 years for a reason, but we thought we'd give it another try .Waitresses were friendly told us we could take any table as there were only several other people in the restaurant at the time ,to make a long story short our order took a very long time and when it did come the home fries were burnt sausages were burnt on one side couldn't finish the meal .The waitress never returned and asked if he wanted a refill on coffee ,I never received my drink ,upon leaving our food on the table we had to ask her for napkins and utensils eat with. she never returned back to the table and asked us if we needed anything 2 tries never again. read more

We came in to grab a bite on Saturday around 1pm. We were seated right away and provided menus. The place was clean. There were only a few people in the restaurant. We had water to drink. My friend ordered the breakfast combo and was allowed to substitute bacon for sausage patties. I ordered the special California BLT sandwich. It came out in a decent amount of time. The staff were preparing to close but chatting loudly by the bar which was distracting. I enjoyed the BLT it was flavorful. My friend enjoyed her breakfast and the pancakes were fluffy. My mother and I had read that jerry Seinfeld claimed this spot to be THE breakfast restaurant so we knew we had to eat here! We were quickly seated in the middle of the restaurant, looked over the menu and when we're ready to order, we were ignored while other tables that came in after us were placing their orders. Finally, a waitress came to take our drink order. About ten minutes go by and we want to put our food order in, but our waitress was outside talking to friends and too busy to take our order apparently, so the hostess came and took our order. Mind you, several tables that sat after us had their food already. We put our food order in and they do make it rather quickly. The eggs Benedict was very good but the Canadian bacon was so small. The crepes, were less than satisfying. Apparently this is their most famous food item, but the filling tasted like high fructose corn syrup trying to pass as sugar with a mix of fresh strawberries and canned ones inside of the crepes. Would I come here again? Most likely not. I would also like to make note that this is a cash only establishment. For our food and drinks, this was about $35. read more

Perfect Place if you're wanting to start your day off on the wrong foot. Beginning with the food. I opted for the crepes after tasting the artificial corn syrup that is passed off as maple syrup. The crepes were served with an unhealthy dusting of powdered sugar. More corn syrup in the filling. I was only willing and able to eat half of one crepe. The server never returned to check. Four servers were too busy on their phones and chatting behind the counter. The two other ls I was with ate some of their food. After waiting for a return we had to wave down another server for our check. Looking at my plate I was offered a box. I explained that I was unable to eat the food due to the amount of sugar. I was offered to order something else, no thank you after spending 30 minutes in a place that had four tables inside and one outside. Mr. Johns Pancake House is centrally located on Main Street in Montauk Village. Benches outside make it easy to wait if need be. But for now in January no need to wait! Cooks deliver your order super fast even though a good number of people this Sunday morning. They are the fastest most professional at serving up eggs and pancakes. They list themselves now on their menu as a pancake and steakhouse (likely by night)but I doubt anyone is looking for that in a breakfast place atmosphere. But who knows. Alert: NO BOOTH for 2 warning. I've eaten at booths here for decades.. but now... Booths all remained empty as paranoid hosts feared groups of 3 or more would need them. So couples were all at lined up tables.. saving the booths for the crowds which never got to use any of them during our visit. Weirdos. Last time I ate here was 10 years ago and the pancakes were doughy. My wife and I took a ride out to Montauk and decided to give it a second chance. Well if nothing else they are consistant. I decided to try the waffles. They were light in color and just one bite and they were of course doughy. I sent them back and rather then make a new batch, they through them on the griddle again darkening the outside a touch and brought them back to the table with my previous minus the bite I had taken. They had the same doughy texture inside. My wife had the same issue with her pancakes. They also forgot to bring the bacon and failed a second time after a gentle reminder. We should have walked out as soon as they brought out the same waffles and pancakes the second time. Never again. Amazing what you can get away with when you have a captive audience in Montauk. I usually love small town diners. This is not one of them. read more

I had a flounder sandwich (fresh;not frozen) good size. My wife had a chicken lsalad just fine, good portion. It's a local hangout. Nothing trendy . We also ate at "Bird on the roof " for brunch. This place is known for their breakfast, but I cannot speak to that since my friend and I came here for lunch. Breakfast was still being served; I just decided to order lunch instead, which was probably a mistake. I would recommend sticking to breakfast items. Another thing to note is that this establishment only accepts cash, which seemed to be the case for most Montauk eateries. The interior was spacious and bustling. It felt quite warm inside, and my skin stuck uncomfortably against the booth seating, even though it wasn't THAT hot outside. There were also misquitos swarming around disgustingly. I think the restaurant across the street would have been a better choice, but since we were already seated, we stayed and tried to make the best of it. I ordered the jumbo fried shrimp with cheesy crabmeat filling, which came with french fries or potato pancakes. I chose the potato pancakes and there was sour cream and apple sauce to put on it. The shrimp stuffed with crabmeat was absolutely delicious. The fried shrimp had a nice, well seasoned breading and the crabmeat and melted cheese inside was delightfully flavorful and fresh. There were only 4 pieces though... For the price, it should have been more than that. The potato pancakes were just okay. They weren't the kind I was used to and were quite dense and dry. The addition of sour cream and apple sauce made it much better. The service was pretty bad throughout our time, from when we first came in, to being seated, to ordering and finally, to paying. The lady in the front was rude to the group of ladies blocking the entrance then let us know we were free to sit wherever, without trying to help us whatsoever. The waitress was not welcoming at all and when I tried to ask questions about the menu, she didn't offer up a lot of information. Later, our check came and we were not sure if we could leave our money on the table or needed to get up and pay in front. I tried to request change, but that was not given so we went to the front but no one was there. Finally, one of the servers noticed we were waiting, but took her time to come over and assist us. The service was so horrible that my friend thought we were overpaying them tipwise. I would definitely never return and will be more discerning about where to eat if I visit Montauk again. read more

What a disappointing experience. We were excited to sit at the same booth as Fallon and Seinfeld, but that's where the excitement ceased and the disappointment began. Two adults two children and one infant. They provided us with two place settings. Food arrived promptly but we were done with our very small overpriced coffee long before the food arrived. We asked for refills and additional settings more than once. By the time another waiter poured us a second cup, I had already finished my pancakes, which were good, I've certainly had better, eating with a spoon. The eggs were runny and the bacon greasy. I've been coming to Montauk for almost 40 years and I've been to John's more than once. Remember the lines coming out of this place for years and always liked the feel of old school diner/pancake house. Now it has not been maintained and the staff is weary as well. On an early Thursday morning I got my coffee promptly from the first hostess, but the waitress for the counter, who was just chatting on side had to be told to take my order after more than five minutes. I honestly had no idea she worked there. Another waitress just standing in back crossed arms seemed really disappointed she had to be there. Home fries were tasty, at least those that were not burnt unrecognizable. No checking in on me for coffee refills. Whoever owns this place clearly has no interest and will eventually just shut it down once they destroy it. Too many options in Montauk to be an absentee owner. It's all short order cooking, nothing out there to confuse the chef. Place your egg order and get the plate to you quickly. I said this about the other long standing restaurant in Montauk. If this establishment was in, pick a town with Hampton in the title, it wouldn't have made it. John's Pancake house is quirky, your on vacation so just go with it.
