First time visit and was greeted with a smile... The place is small and cozy, yet gives one the feeling that they crammed as many booths as they could into a small space... The one thing that stands out is that every time someone opened the door, we were blasted with freezing air... Breakfast was good. Ordered wheat toast dry... It came buttered... Ordered bacon extra crispy... came rubbery... Eggs were good and French Toast was tasty... Thought service was good, but after she brought our breakfast, didn't see her again... Even had to chase her down to get our ticket... Lastly... parking is a bit of a challenge, for you have to find a place on a crowded street... Finally had breakfast here and it was amazing ... yum. Other half said the chipped beef on toast was among the best and the homefries were perfect with some crispy edges - but not burnt - and still moist inside. The chocolate chips pancakes I had were amazing with a light crispy outside and a hot, fluffy, flavorful inside. The cheese omelet, also, was flavorful and delicious. Having hear about this place for decades (seriously) I finally stopped in one night with my husband. It's not very big and it's not very fancy but it's 100% worth stopping in. I'm seriously craving the special I got there - it was a chicken pie. All of the amazing flavors of a traditional crust top chicken pot pie but served on a plate with a crust not in a dish. It was soooooooooooooo good. One of those dishes where you don't want to reach the last bite. And, after you do, you want to lick the plate? Seriously. I decided to try the broccoli salad as my side. It was good but too sweet for me. However, I can totally see how someone would absolutely love it Prices are very fair. Service is excellent. I honestly can't remember what my husband ordered because I was so dang distracted by my fantastic chicken pie. Home style cooking. Old school menu. I can't wait to eat here again. Worth the trip and finding a place to park. We even ordered a burger and fries, to go, for my son who was at soccer practice while we ate dinner. Great find for a quick lunch. John's is located in a residential area in a row of houses. Clean on the inside and the staff were very friendly. Very local spot, seems like everyone was a regular and knew each other. I was just passing through and really enjoyed the homemade vegetable soup and a simple grilled ham and cheese sandwich. It's a Hideaway restaurant alright...I wasn't even aware that this restaurant existed until I was in the second semester of my senior year at Dickinson! That being said, I'm glad I listened to the friends who recommended this place...what a hidden gem of a place. For starters, even compared to many places in Carlisle (which is cheap compared to my hometown of New York), John's is really inexpensive. Additionally, the service is quick and friendly, to the point that I feel at home going to John's even though I've only been here a few times! Finally, the food, while not fancy, is hot, fresh, and tasty. I particularly enjoy their BLTs, which may not sound impressive but when you consider the number of ways I have seen a restaurant mess up a BLT, it's a microcosm of John's--unfussy food done well. read more

We visited Catlisle and saw that this restaurant received good reviews, so thought we would try it. First off we decided to wash our hands before eating. Our group used both the men's and woman's restrooms. OMG - everything in both restrooms (floors, toilets, sinks, etc.) were both filthy and the stench of urine was over powering! There were only two employees working, the chef and a server. We notified the server of this. The server was dismissive and did not seem to care. We ordered our meals. Three of us had meat loaf, which was very good. The broccoli salad was also very good. However, one of our group ordered a roast beef sandwich with fries, and specifically said they did not want gravy on their meal. The chef put gravy on both the sandwich and fries. This was noted when the server placed the incorrect dish on the table. Instead of correcting the mistake and bringing the correct order the server walked away. Another member of our group ordered the special of the day, Greek Lasagna. It was not good. I do not recommend that menue selection. Overall with the restrooms cleanliness issues, bringing the incorrect order, the poor attitude of the server and dissatisfaction of the lasagna, this restaurant does not deserve more than an average rating. Based on the reviews given by others who were very satisfied, hopefully the day we ate here was an isolated "off" day. However, rather than take a chance, if you are just visiting Carlisle and not a local, I would highly recommend that you select another restaurant as according to both Yelp and Trip Advisor ther are quite a number of other restaurants in the town. read more

So at first glance you might think this place isn't worth it, but you'd be wrong. Look. There are no modern frills. It feels like an old diner, complete with a menu with things like liver & onions and fried ham, and a clientele which has been coming here for decades. And if you just looked at that, what with "diners" nowadays being all fancy, and what we used to call regular food now out of fashion, you would miss that the food is home cooked, the staff are welcoming, and the locals are filled with the best stories. Sure the menu is no frills, but it's delicious. I think we lose some of that simplicity in modern restaurants. Everything nowadays is deconstructed or has a name you can't pronounce, which don't get me wrong I like on many occasion. But there's a place for simplicity. And this place....This stuff is grandma proud, good ol comfort food. You want some of the best meatloaf or fried chicken ever, sitting among locals rip roaring it up in an extremely casual environment at a good price? This is it, and I hope it stays. Otherwise, we lose the refined elegance in simple, home cooked food, which is something no town should be without. And PS, if you really want to hear some great banter, head in around 6am.
