Stopped by John's Butcher Shoppe to get some beef ribs to smoke. I hadn't been here in a while. I know i can always find a nice selection of meat here. The place is small. Service is always nice and friendly. The man the helped me today greeted me as soon as I walked in the door. He helped me throughout the time I was there. He was very helpful. I got some beef ribs and ox tails. I continued looking around and the other options. I got what I came to get. There is a small limited parking lot out front. They give you a ticket. I see everyone is so jazzed about this place and after six times of receiving smelly slimy meats we just stopped going. Taking it back for something, I don't know, fresh and edible, causes a negative reaction. If it's not bad, why not switch it out for something else? Because they are ignorant. This place is dynamite! It's so tucked and hidden, I feel like you have to be a nearby North County resident to know it even exists! But alas, there's always Yelp to help. Most notably, the cow on top of the building with the old fashioned sign reading, "John's Butcher Shoppe." It was a beautiful day and the building is just very fitting and picturesque. Maybe it's COVID, but it's the little things, y'all. It was busy on a Tuesday evening, around 5pm. I say busy, but don't think long wait times, these people are as efficient as they are friendly. That day we were there, just to buy a couple pounds of chicken wings, but having never patronized this establishment, I felt like I was spinning as I looked around at their offerings. Just to name a few convenience items in their grocery corner: candy, chips, soda, hot sauce, wing sauce, pasta sauce, their wall of homemade spices and seasonings. They also have a mini deli, with cold cuts and cheese. And it's a butcher shop so of course they have all kinds of meats and a variety of cuts. There's a counter with plenty of staff and you just kind of call out to them when you're ready, you can keep shopping or go straight to the counter to purchase. Alligator, huge ribeye, corn, salmon, shrimp... you name it! If you love it as much as I did, you may be motivated to buy a T-shirt! TLDR: Very clean. Very organized. Very friendly folks. I'm so glad I found this place when I did. John's somehow makes their prices lower and their quality higher, there's really no reason for me to shop anywhere else. So far I've only bought a few cuts of steak and some bacon, but their selection is impressive and it's nice to have it as an option to experiment with various dishes. To be honest I don't really care where I get my meat from. The industry seems so homogeneous to me that I can't say whether the same grade of beef is better at one place or another. But what IS awesome about small butcher shops is that they do tend to be more willing to cut the meat to your liking. I've only had such luck at the Schnucks over at Mason and Olive in a big grocery store. One huge service they offered was to debone a duck for me for a fee. That, on top of defrosting the thing is already a huge service in my mind. On top of that, this place has a weekly ad that's updated on their website to see what's on sale. This is a big plus because it adds yet another place for the chance that ribeye's on sale. I'm not quite enamored with the place, as I don't think they serve anything out of the ordinary that I'm looking for. However, the extremely courteous staff, the fact that they have an online ad of what they have available (TAKE NOTE, BOB'S SEAFOOD), and their solid prices (sometimes cheaper than sales prices elsewhere) makes me come back again and again. read more

I found this hidden gem back in 2016 when I was going to another business near them in Overland. They have a great staff. Friendly, helpful, and considerate. It's always a pleasure to stop here and pick up fresh meats when I'm in the area. I purchased two rib eyes a couple of days ago and prepared​ them tonight. Wonderful​! I like their take on the meat snack sticks. Very tasty and not greasy or over spiced. My dogs love the beef heart and ground beef mix for a fresh raw meal. I was driving all over town to the known shops. Then one day I was getting google directions to another butcher shop and Johns shop came up. I've been a customer ever since! The price is unbeatable, the quality in product is exceptional and their customer service is impeccable. I've purchased multiple items; ribeye, pork steaks, chicken, prime rib, and sausage. The cut of meats I get are fresh and delicious. If there isn't something available, they will always cut from the back or to my desired thickness. We went boneless for our family's prime rib for the holidays last year. They cut and tied on the spot for us! And it was the best price in town. A little hidden gem they offer is smoked bones for dogs. They are huge and cheap. My mutt enjoys his treats every time I visit Johns. I've recommended they mass market them due to their low cost and size. I can't imagine how much more business they would have if they relocated on the main drag of St. Charles Rock Road. Don't get discouraged. It's right at the corner of St. Charles Rock Road and 170. Takes 1 minute to get off the highway and make the first quick left for 1 block in a quiet neighborhood. I haven't been here since junior high. A friend's father would shop here every month. At that age I didn't understand why he would come here to buy meat instead of the grocery store. Enter present day. I recently moved back into the area and was telling a couple friends about the place. Well i remember going to butcher shops as a child with my father. His buddy owned one. I was not sure what to look for, but I have been wanting to find a good butcher as I am a foodie. The other day my buddy knew that I was headed off to costco to grab a month or so worth of meat. He said I should go to Johns before we went to costco. I decided that it would probably be better to go to costco first that way we can swing back to johns and i would just get a steak or two for grilling that evening, and it wouldnt spoil. I should have went to johns first. He has awesome package deals where you can really stretch your buck. His prices are great and he is more than willing to go cut you up a hunk of meat to your liking. His shop if full of different seasonings and meats, even smoked ham bones for the pups, which my dogs scarfed down i might add. All in all, if you in the area and you want a steak to take home. I was so excited that I'd be able to come back to John's when we finally moved back to St. Louis, and I've just come from my first visit in years! The shop is just as I remembered it, though a few little things had changed. Their prices are still reasonable, and the workers are attentive and friendly. I even recognized one person working, which tells me its a good place to work. This amazed me during covid they DON'T WEAR GLOVES i ordered 1.5lb of ground beef and the female working grabbed my beef bare handed! when i ask about gloves she said "SHE WASHES HER HAND A LOT. then she said i have gloves rite here i can put some on if you like!!! omg REALLY! Went by there Friday afternoon for several pounds of beef filets. They are happy to help you, and all are friendly. I asked one of the people behind the counter if they had some tenderloin cut up into filets, and he happily picked up 2 whole tenderloins and proceeded to cut them up for me, pretty much spot-on for the size I requested. The meat was high quality, and their prices were unbeatable on it. They also have a variety of exotic meats as well (ostrich, buffalo, elk). I'll definitely be going back! read more

I love the fact that I can come here and get a giant thing of chicken gizzards for 2 bucks. That alone deserves 5 stars, but there's plenty of other stuff that makes this place great. Whenever I want a steak dinner, this is where I go. They give you a big slab of meat for a great price. Another thing is the people are nice as hell. I went in once asking for a copious amount of animal blood (for a movie) and they didn't even look at me funny. They saved me up a large amount for a couple of weeks and didn't charge me for their trouble. I still bought some stuff though. read more

Parking is slightly annoying but its an in and out so I don't care. Walked in and was greeted promptly with the most GENUINE smiles I have seen in a long time. Customer service blew me away here, informative, not over the top and just super helpful. Prices are awesome and the meat is fresh and delicious. Also in terms of what homie said in the other review about organs being grounded as well, this is an option, its not in all the ground meat. and FYI, in other parts of the world its perfectly normal to eat the organs. IF you eat any type of fast food burgers in that ground meat u might be eating fingers of the under the table paid workers they have in the factories. I searched for a small family owned butcher shop to take my daughters first deer because we just didn't have the time to do it ourselves like usual. This one received good reviews so I drove 45 minutes to give them the business instead of a corporate mogul like the shop down the street from us. The 2 stars I gave are for the man who took the deer out of my truck that gave prompt courteous service and the nice older gentleman inside who was pleasant both times I was there. The rest was ruined by the the woman who works behind the counter that could use a lesson in customer service. After a 45 minute drive my 10 year old son asked to use the rest room. She said there were no public restrooms. He was doing the 10 y/o "peepee" dance and said mom I can't wait it hurts and she said well your about to leave so you'll be fine. Um no, I wasn't about to leave. I wanted to purchase some strip steak and seasonings for my deer tenderloin! She swiped my card for a whopping $253 (not including the steak or seasoning because now I had minor emergency on my hands) and he said please can I use the bathroom... And she repeated that the bathrooms weren't "public" and there was a gas station down the street. Seriously??! We weren't walking in off the street! I just spent almost a whole weeks pay here not to mention gas and my son cant use the restroom for 3 minutes?! Then the kid that put the deer in my car carried all three boxes at once and slammed them down in the back of my car crushing the two lower boxes so I couldn't carry them in at home, just the meat. This is not the type of family shop experience I had hoped for like Bobs meat market gave when I was younger. I will be making the even longer drive there from now on if needed. read more
