    BBQ Pork Plate
    Steve C.

First visit to this small town BBQ joint. They opened their doors in 1949! Had the pork plate with sides of baked beans, coleslaw, fries, and hush puppies! All items were excellent, their bbq sauce is also very good. Service was quick and efficient and prices were fair.

We wanted to eat at a local, family-owned bbq joint & we struck gold at Johnny's! Packed with local folks, so we knew it was gonna be good. The food was EXCELLENT; perfect (large) portions, great presentation, toothsome flavor, & great-value-for-the-price. Morgan, our server, was a real sweetheart; pleasant, professional, & very attentive. She checked on us often & kept our glasses topped off. Thanks, Johnny! We'll be back! #SlapTheBulldog!

Johnny's Bar-B-Q was listed as obe of the restaurants in Alabama you have to try before you die. This Cullman, Alabama institution has been feeding the people of this area and road weary travelers for decade after decade. This restaurant has been in business since l at least 1950's. I pulled in well before noon find me parking lot full already. However, I was seated within five minutes of being there. I ordered the small combination barbecue plate, which was three ounces of pork, a quarter chicken, coleslaw, potato salad and a roll. My food was brought out rather fast and I wasted no time staring into my lunch. I had then bring me both the red and the white barbecue sauce, which I used liberally on both the pork and chicken. The pork was tender and you had a great bark on the outside, making the skin almost crunchy. The potato salad was finely minced and had a great vinegar base. The coleslaw was a bit strong with the onion, but otherwise all was great. Service is very friendly, almost to the point that you would see an old movie about small town country folk. I would recommend if you are in the area to seek this place out.

Looking for some new BBQ to try and my wife and I settled on this place. I will say, everything up until paying my check was spot on. Server was sweet, attentive and answered all our questions. The food was good, like really good. But then.... we got up to pay the check. The person working the register was very rude to me. I was joking with her, and she said "can I just have your check please" really snotty. Not sure what her problem was. I handed her the check, paid and we walked out. My wife said I showed great restraint not getting a manager or telling her off but I was in a good mood and wasn't going to let this person ruin it. Didn't catch her name because I was floored at her attitude. I do know she was kind of short, blond hair and wore glasses. We shall not be returning here. Pucket's just opened and their BBQ is AMAZING and everyone there is friendly. Maybe Johnnys should take some notes???

Amazing food. The server was so nice and on top of everything. Will be back. Nice atmosphere.

We came here for lunch one day, I wasn't 100% sure what to expect, but I had been told it was the best. Maybe I would've been less disappointed if I hadn't been told that beforehand. The service was fine, lots of older waitresses, but they do a good job. There were quite a few people inside which indicated that it should be good as well. The tables are a start haha, it looks like it started like an advertisement opportunity, but haven't been updated in many moons. I can understand how they might be trying to have like a local vibe, but its kind of bordering on tacky. We ordered and were brought our food in a reasonable amount of time. I think the portions are pretty appropriate, and the price seems pretty fair for the quantity. I had a half chicken with potato salad and mac n cheese as sides. The husband has a pulled pork sandwich. I enjoyed the chicken a bit more after I added sufficient salt, but I could definitely tell it was slow cooked in a smoker or some thing similar. I didn't particularly enjoy the white sauce that comes on the plate, but other people definitely might. I believe it's a vinegar mix, not for everyone, but some people like that. The Mac n cheese was good, not like amazing, but probably my favorite part of the meal. The potato salad was a bit too sweet for my taste, and the texture was not my favorite, my best description is puréed which kind of threw me off. Overall an okay place to eat, but I wouldn't make it a 'must do'.

My friend, who is the salt of the earth, was falsely accused by the manager of bringing in small bottles of booze into the bathroom and throwing them away in the trash. The manager got in my friend's face and told her to leave. My friend DOES NOT DRINK! Anyone who knows her knows this to be true. This was told to the manager and she said it had to be her as she was the last person out of the bathroom before she changed out the trash. This was faulty reasoning as there were MANY women in the establishment and a group of young ladies who had been thrown out earlier for a similar situation. Once presented with the facts, instead of admitting her mistake and apologizing; the manager still kicked my friend out. I left as well and will never give another dime to this establishment. I went to Goat Island to try to put a better spin on my evening and told them what happened. They know the lady in question and also confirmed she does not drink and has never ordered anything but water or a soda at Goat Island. The manager at Goat Island assumed something that when proven to be false cold not bring herself to apologize to my friend.

I added a loaded baked potato (sans bacon) and it was loaded nicely with cheddar, green onions and sour cream, but the potato itself was cold. If delivered hot I'd likely recommend it. I decided to make the best of it despite the lack of heating. The service was friendly and excellent, and because of that I didn't stress about the cold potato. And I was plenty full anyway. There were only three cars in the parking lot and three occupied tables, yet there was no hostess, no one at the register, and no employee acknowledging customers as they entered. My wife, granddaughter and I stood waiting at the front for what felt like forever. Eventually, I noticed a server stand up from a booth, grab her apron, and disappear into the back. I assumed she was putting away her meal and would be right back to seat us. She never returned. After standing there another three or four minutes without so much as a "We'll be right with you," we walked out. As we left, I told my wife, "No wonder there are only three cars in the parking lot." Good barbecue may bring people in the door, but terrible customer service sends them right back out. If the owners are wondering why business is slow, they might start by making sure customers are acknowledged when they walk through the front door. It costs nothing to say, "We'll be with you in just a minute." Based on this experience, Williams BBQ lost two customers before we ever had the chance to taste the food.

Not wanting to wait until we got back to Birmingham to get some grub, we pulled off in Dodge City looking for a spot that had a few solid reviews. Alas, the place we sought was no longer around, and Jim B's BBQ was the only thing around that looked acceptable. We decided to take a chance on the place (even though the sign reads Jim B's BBQ, Steak and Seafood, and I typically steer clear of anyplace that claims multiple specialties that includes seafood). We might have skipped the place over, but I was hungry and as we pulled up, you could smell the BBQ in the parking lot. Being first-timers, the friendly waitress steered us to the Loaded Mushrooms (think loaded baked potato, but instead of a potato under all of that cheese and ranch and bacon, its fried mushrooms). They were as good as they sound. The prices were so cheap and the BBQ smelled so good, I decided to go all-in and got the BBQ sampler platter. My wife picked the pulled pork sandwich. Everything was great. The baked beans were even awesome (sweet and bacony), and I'm really not a huge bean fan. The BBQ pork had a good smoke flavor. The chicken was juicy. The smoked sausage was good and seemed to be very fresh. The ribs were a little dry, but they were very tender. To top it all off, with as much food as we ordered, our bill was just over $30 including tip. The dry ribs are the only thing keeping them from five stars on this visit. I'm probably spoiled by all of the good BBQ in the South, but I just can't give five stars to a BBQ joint unless all of the que is top notch.
