This place has been holding it down since 1963, and they've got the plaque to prove it, proudly posted as a member of the Alabama Barbeque Hall of Fame. When you walk in, it feels like you just stepped into a time capsule where calories do not count and everybody knows how to properly pronounce "slaw." The ambience absolutely screams old school BBQ joint. Wood paneling. No nonsense tables. The kind of place where you half expect your uncle to be in the corner arguing about college football. Now let's talk food, because that is why we're here. The pulled chicken? Outstanding. Tender, juicy, packed with flavor. It showed up ready to win. If it ran for office, I would vote for it. That chicken understood the assignment. The BBQ chicken had that beautiful crisped skin that makes you lean in like, "Oh yeah, this is about to be serious." But then it hit the plate a little under seasoned. The sauce was on the thinner side too. Not bad, just more "light drizzle at a picnic" than "bold backyard pitmaster energy." And let me take a moment to publicly thank the potato salad. Special shout out. Creamy, balanced, and clearly made by somebody's grandmother who does not measure anything and does not need to. All in all, Johnny's is a solid four stars. Historic, nostalgic, and when they hit, they really hit. I'll be back, mostly for that pulled chicken and potato salad combo that had me considering a second plate and a nap.

They have a 1-pound burger called "Death by Cheeseburger," and it is fresh hand-patted out of top-ground beef, never frozen, and grilled and seasoned to perfection. Great Customer service. Nothing special. Hamburger steak was a 5-6 oz patty with onions and brown gravy. Fries were crisp and good with the onion gravy. My wife had the open face smoked pork bbq on texas toast with fried okra and potato salad. Everything was good. Probably try the catfish next time. Service was good. Its a sit down and order by waitress place. Pay at the counter when you leave. I think they have renovated and spruced up the place since our last visit.

The bacon bits, while the pre-packaged salad garnish kind, are a pleasant surprise - you don't often get those on bbq taters without asking. The potato was cooked nicely, still warm and soft. I genuinely enjoyed the Que, enough so that I'd get it on a sandwich or on a plate without the goodness of a potato there as backup, lol. I don't like bbq sauce on my taters but I did dip a small piece of pork in the cup they gave me. It's a more vinegar based sauce, but it had enough sweetness to it that I still enjoyed it. Oh, and my mother's favorite loaded baked potato with pork, extra butter, no sour cream. I did not call ahead and anticipated a wait. Thankfully they have their system down to a science; from order time to fulfillment for my order was less than 5 minutes! And while I was waiting on my order to be filled, someone was out taking paper orders for the line behind me. (Yes, I said line...and they weren't all patient. They must have been hungry.) I've heard it said you can't screw up BBQ, but you can, and they didn't. Given the "claim to fame" is a mild vinegar-based sauce, you can't hide much like you can with a sweet, ketchup-y sauce. I wish I had a scale, because I swear there was more than 5# of meat, and 1/2 gal was a LOT of cole slaw. A lesson learned and note to the wise: when they say 3 oz per sandwich when figuring how much you will need for a crowd, go with their approximation. Ever the consummate Southern hostess, I was afraid of running out of food & ordered this larger amount. Never ran out, everyone was full and lots of leftover pork was frozen. My mother's potato was exactly as ordered, texture was great for cutting and she made 2 meals out of it. This BBQ location is a go-to for our family. The lady at the window was pleasant enough. I ordered a pulled pork potato and a large (they mean it when they say large!) sweet tea. I thought the price was VERY reasonable - I got out for only around $12 for a plenty large lunch. As far as bbq taters go, this isn't the monstrously large kind you'll find at Lawlers or the nearby Pigskin BBQ, but it is certainly big enough for a filling meal. The potato was cooked nicely. I was pretty happy with the pork, too -- good consistency/pull, and I could actually taste the smoke! My one complaint is that the sour cream and whipped butter spread (not real butter) came on the side. I very much prefer restaurants to apply those ingredients themselves so they can melt into the potato beneath the hot meat and cheese. Also, real butter would've been my preference, lol. Overall though, very solid potato and bbq for a very reasonable price. I would certainly return for a tasty local lunch.

We might have skipped the place over, but I was hungry and as we pulled up, you could smell the BBQ in the parking lot. Being first-timers, the friendly waitress steered us to the Loaded Mushrooms (think loaded baked potato, but instead of a potato under all of that cheese and ranch and bacon, its fried mushrooms). They were as good as they sound. The prices were so cheap and the BBQ smelled so good, I decided to go all-in and got the BBQ sampler platter. My wife picked the pulled pork sandwich. Everything was great. The baked beans were even awesome (sweet and bacony), and I'm really not a huge bean fan. The BBQ pork had a good smoke flavor. The chicken was juicy. The smoked sausage was good and seemed to be very fresh. The ribs were a little dry, but they were very tender. To top it all off, with as much food as we ordered, our bill was just over $30 including tip. The dry ribs are the only thing keeping them from five stars on this visit. I'm probably spoiled by all of the good BBQ in the South, but I just can't give five stars to a BBQ joint unless all of the que is top notch.
