I really don't want to write this, but ...how difficult it is it to cook diner food? The diner has all the trapping so a normal neo-50s style diner, (bright colors, vintage cars and Coke motif), but it's a trap. I got there late on a quiet Monday afternoon, using Yelp to locate the diner. I ordered a Reuben, fries, and coffee. Ok, the coffee was good. But the Reuben? Imagine a lumpy, thin sandwich (maybe 5/8ths of an inch thick) thin gelatinous white/pink mass of proteinaceous stuff on greasy brown bread (not rye, or maybe a Wyoming idea of rye) with indifferent white cheeselike product and a few flecks of sauerkraut. No dressing. That came in a tub on the side. Whatever oil the sandwich had been grilled on/in had been used extensively before, and appeared to be on the verge of rancid. I gave up (which I don't normally do). The fries had also been cooked in well used oil, carrying with it and aromatic bouquet of fish, onions, meatloaf and some other indescribable flavor that reminded me of a dumpster on a hot summer day. The only thing that saved the meal was the service, which was very good, and the people watching (entertaining). A Reuben needs to contain a pile of peppery, florally-fragrant pastrami, a pile of crunchy sauerkraut, special secret sauce (not too much, and no tub), no cheese, chewy caraway-scented rye bread (or pumpernickel) with a slightly crisp but leathery crust, and a kosher pickle. Typically 2" + tall. I've lived in the West for over a dozen years and can't figure out why no one can make a Reuben out here. But this one in Casper, Wyoming, was memorable in it badness. It was either a violently anti-Semitic, brazenly satirical caricature of a beautiful sandwich, or just an tired product at the end of a long lunch shift before they changed out the grease for the week. Either way, it was spectacularly bad. The desserts looked large and very sweet, the pies looked good, but after that sandwich, we just had to get out of there. read more

I'm not someone who usually leaves bad reviews, but in this case I feel compelled to. I visited here for dinner with my mom and my 5 yr old. The silver lining of this visit was our waitress was very personable and friendly Unfortunately, this couldn't make up for what the kitchen tried to pass off as food. My mom ordered the Johnny J Cheeseburger, my daughter got the spaghetti with a meatball from the kids menu, and I ordered the turkey bacon melt. I'll start off by saying mine was actually pretty decent. The sandwich itself was good but slightly burned on the toasting and the onion rings were a bit on the greasy side. My mom's burger on the other hand is was under cooked and the patty itself you could tell wasn't fresh. The burger was advertised to come with all the fixings, but she was given a scarce amount of each (e.g., a single small leaf for lettuce). The flavor was pretty bland, and what little there was made you wish there wasn't. I tried to eat some of hers, but I've honestly had better burgers from McDonald's. With my daughter's meal, it was far worse. You wouldn't think a simple dish like spaghetti would be asking for too much, but it was just god awful. There was a little bit a of meat sauce and then a huge "meatball" on top of her bowl. The meatball didn't seem like it was really meatball though, and it actually all tasted like it came out of a can (some time ago) and was just mushed together to approximate a meatball. It was pretty bland but had a slight flavor that was revolting. The flavor combined with the meat being an unnaturally dark color was about enough for me to lose my dinner. Honestly, the burger and spaghetti were like nothing I've tasted before (or again, God willing.) THE GOOD: +The waitress was friendly. +The turkey bacon melt was passable. THE BAD: -Worst cheeseburger I've ever tasted. -Worst spaghetti I've ever tasted. THE UGLY: It's such a shame, as this place used to be great. Anyone remember when it used to be Granny's Diner? Or heck, even after Johnny J first took over it was pretty dang good. They used to advertise 100% fresh never-frozen beef for their burgers. I can say pretty confidently that is no longer the case. And at $10 for a burger there are literally dozens of better options in town. read more

In town for work and this place looked interesting. It was really packed, so my expectations were very high. The service was great and everyone was nice and pleasant. Ordered one of the burgers with onion rings . Food was good. I'd recommend eating here read more

We were driving back from northern Wyoming to Denver and stopped in Casper and came across this place. Very impressed. Great atmosphere, clean and great service for starters...and the food was excellent...HUGE pancakes, very good sausage, and a great skillet plate between the two of us. Nice find...and if we are ever back in Casper, we would definitely eat here again. read more

Late night bite in Casper and I picked this joint... Ordered the chicken fry and oh my was i the happiest guy in town! Chicken' fry was super legit! I could go in to more but there ain't no reason....if ya haven't had ya gotta get!!! Best I've ever had any where. read more

I go this diner at least once a week for breakfast, as the service is quick and food is good. I am a regular such that many of servers know me by name. I really love the biscuits and gravy there, as well as the waffle combo. I also often get the 2-2-2, but most times don't come close to finishing it, as the pancakes are bigger than my head almost. In addition to the breakfast items I also like the burgers, broasted chicken, and chicken fried steak. Last, but not least their peach pie is very tasty and the BOGO milkshakes during the Summer on Tuesday nights are great. read more

Great experience! Food was great, prices were great, and portions were very diner-style big. Dessert was delicious. Server was very polite and attentive. This is typical Americana diner food, nothing more, nothing less. But it happens that I was looking for just that tonight and I got it. If you're looking for something inspired or against the grain so to speak, hit up a different place. Pros: Cheap, great service, good comfort food. Johnny J's is a cutesy, kitschy 50's style diner that feels very chain-like. Living on Route 66 as we do, it seemed kind of silly to be so far away from Route 66 and see the decor and signs all over the place, but that was fine...just funny! After a day at the Badlands, we were ready for some dinner and stopped here. While the friendly and upbeat atmosphere was great, the food didn't really wow my husband or me. He had a fish and chips dinner that was just okay, and my chili cheese fries reminded me of a fast food item or maybe something from the bowling alley - that orange liquidy cheese, although the chili was good and the fries were again, just okay. Honestly everything tasted decent -- but not great in any remarkable way. The one shining star of our experience was the rum raisin bread pudding, which was absolutely divine and under four bucks, too. I highly recommend getting dessert at Johnny J's based on our experience! If we hadn't shared the fabulous bread pudding I would easily give this place just 3 stars. read more

Traveling on business and had a layover in Casper. I checked the reviews and it sounded good. It was great. Very friendly staff and my waitress Bianca was fantastic. I hope all the servers are like her. The restaurant was clean and they closed off one part of the restaurant to pull out the booths to clean them from top to bottom. My burger was good and I loved the beer battered onion rings. I even made room for a carmel sundae that was delicious. If I ever come to Casper, Wy again I will eat here. read more

I have eaten there many times. It is usually very good though a couple of times it has been just okay. The burgers are usually good and the lunch/dinner specials are a value.....what I really love to go for is dessert! This place was off the chart delicious! I'm giving it 4 stars because it took forever to get our food. We had hamburgers that satisfied my craving for meat, french fries were good and the onion rings were good as well. The milkshakes were fantastic!!! Too bad we don't have a Johnny J's Diner here, I would kick In N Out to the curb and get all my burgers/shakes from Johnny J's Diner! I remember going to this place a couple years back, decided to go back since it was amazing then. This I was very disappointed. I had bacon burger the lettuce had better flavor​ then the dried up burnt to crisp burger, the back on looked good but had no flavor. The fries were the only edible part of the meal. The service was decent other than the waiter after asking how it was, was told not very good. He just walked away. No manager, not even a can we make it over for you. My wife's burger was the exact same way. Won't be going back anytime soon. read more

A- OK is right! Johnny Js is situated on the site of a former Granny's Diner and I must say it is an average place. It serves like its predecessor burgers and fries. It has been awhile since I have been there so things may have changed but I remember it being simply ok. It isn't horrible yet it isn't inspired either. read more

It was ok, not great and not bad. I read a review on here about home made pies. I had one, it was a cream pie. It was ok, but the cream was like frosting...not what I call home made. The burgers and fries are nothing special. And the price is about $10- or 12 for a burger, fries and a drink...like I said, ok but not great. The staff seems to be real nice. The menu is typical of what you'd expect at a diner. The food was ok. I had a BLT and wasn't overly impressed, but wasn't disappointed. I also had a chocolate coke which was great. It hit the spot. Stumbled upon this place while passing through Casper on our way to South Dakota. We were so pleased with the food and service that we had to stop by on our way back through town to try their pies (they were out of raspberry and peach since we stopped by in the late afternoon). I love the decor of this 50's style diner! The food is great and there are lots of dessert choices. Some of my favorite's on the menu are the chili, cheeseburger, and chicken fried steak. I tried the peanut butter pie but was not a fan because of the bitter taste. The service is good and the place is clean. It is a good place to bring a family or a group of people because there is something on the menu for everyone. The prices are inexpensive too. I haven't tried their breakfast yet but will be back soon to have a taste. read more

I have been here three times and 2/3 times I have been quite impressed. The only real negative I would say is they don't serve breakfast all day. I am not a fan of milkshakes either, but this place makes me a believer, as I always get a triple berry milkshake (If it is not on the menu, just ask for it). I really like to eat here. They are friendly, and the prices are pretty fair. Sometimes they get really busy and are a little slow , but it's understandable when they are packed full of people.
