One of the best smash burgers I've had with a beautiful char. Fries are on the thick cut side and came out hot and fresh. The tater tots are super crispy. Both the fried and taters come very lightly salted, and there are salt packets you can grab to add to taste. The Mac and cheese has a nice smoky flavor from the bacon, and I appreciate that it comes in a to-go container. Casual spot with order and pick up at the counter. Nothing in particular to note about service, they were nice. Plenty of comfortable seating inside. I would come back here for the quality of the food alone, but what really makes this place stand out is the affordability, especially for the sides. I could had done without the BBQ sauce because it was on the sweeter side compared to other BBQ sauces. Fatboi Burger was also a solid burger. Juicy and the special sauce and bacon jam added a powerful punch to the overall burger. Fasho Spicy was the fried chicken sandwich that was just okay. Pretty dry even though it came with the smash sauce. Kiddos tenders were also very crispy but dry. Mac n' Cheese & Bacon Bits lacked seasoning. Nothing special. The only thing that helped it were the bacon bits. Fries were thick, golden, and crispy. We had regular orders and an order in the highway style. I was looking forward to trying Johnny Boi. I heard good reviews. When I arrived their were workers behind the counter but they did not interact with the customers. I wanted an item that was listened on their menu but couldn't find it on the order pad. No one offered to help or answer any questions. It was all hands on deck for the kitchen. You had to wait for your drinks after your food was served. Flag people down for assistance. Cowboy burger was good. I didn't care for the bbq sauce. But the burger was good. The young lady at the counter was cordial and efficient, I gave the dude who made my burger the thumbs up, and he responded with a prideful smile. Solid burger spot. Came in on a Saturday night around 7:30pm and we were the only ones there for a bit. I thought it was just quiet because it was a little rainy, but come 8:00pm it was BUSY! I appreciated the fun Bay Area ambience and don't be fooled by the "ghetto" graffiti, they keep this place clean. Burgers were good. We ordered four burgers, two smash burgers and two Fatboy burgers and two orders of tater tots one Oreo cookie shake and an ice cream cone. The total was a little over $70.. ouch! The first thing I thought while paying the bill was these better be some good burgers for that amount of money. The food was ready within a few minutes. I saw them frying the burgers fresh, which was great! I noticed there were tater tots sitting under the heat lamp when we placed our order....i hoped we wouldn't get those because they looked as if they had been sitting for a while. As luck would have it, we did indeed get those tater tots and as luck would also have it, they were indeed cold. Bummer - cause if you know me, you know I like my food fresh and hot! The burgers were just ok. They didn't have any seasoning and the smash sauce was a bit spicy. Even though I watched them put the meat on the grill which I thought was our burgers, the burgers came out just warm. The cheese was barely melted and the bun, although very soft was also cold. The restaurant was pretty empty, which is not too unexpected, considering they close at 9:00 p.m. I ordered their Fasho Spicy -- a spicy fried chicken sandwich, while my wife ordered one of their smashburgers -- the Johnny Boi. Between the two of us, we also ordered one of their french fries. The fried chicken is thickly battered and almost a bit too crunchy. The spiciness of the chicken comes from peppers in the dry rub. It's not the spiciest fried chicken sandwich out there, but it still packs a punch. The sandwich is super messy to eat because the sandwich is overdressed with their "smash sauce" so the buns deteriorate quickly. The patty for the smashburger is not the thinest out there (that award goes to Hyphy Burger in Oakland), but it's still nicely fried and well-seasoned. When we ordered the "Johnny Boi" at the counter, we were asked if we wanted tomatoes and lettuce with the burger, and we politely declined after the woman behind the counter confirmed that that would be an extra charge. This felt like nickel and diming to be honest, given how extraordinary cheap lettuce is (and the fact that they charge a 3% surcharge for using credit card). Speaking of extra charges... I would say tipping is absolutely not justified or necessary. Be confident hitting that "No Tip" button and don't settle even for 15%. Everything is self-service here: you pick up your food at the counter, you bus your own table, you grab your own ketchup and napkins, etc. You are receiving zero service. Going back to the food, the fries are similar to thick cut steak fries, where the outside is crispy but the inside is fluffy. Not my favorite, since there's too much potato in each bite and the fries come across as a bit starchy. Overall, not a bad spot for a burger if you're in Point Richmond, but I've had better fried chicken sandwiches and smashburgers elsewhere in East Bay. read more

I stopped by Johnny Boi earlier after reading rave reviews for them. They lived up to the hype. The location is great-- on a corner right by the freeway with easy, accessible, streetside parking. They have plenty of spacious outdoor seating, which can be good if things get too loud inside. I'm sensitive to noise and found it a bit loud inside, with the music, TV, sounds of food being prepared, and diners conversing, but that's easily remedied with the outdoor seating area. The menu was plentiful but not overwhelmingly so. I ordered the Johnny Boi without carmelized onions or bacon jam and added jalapeños. It was very good and left me feeling full but not painfully stuffed. The fries were great, and the chocolate shake was the perfect sweetener for the meal. I love the decor and overall vibe. Customer service was excellent, and we were greeted as soon as we walked through the front door, even though they were already busy. I know a lot of folks early on visited this restaurant and had a lot of positive feedback so after a month or so who am I to turn down a good burger. This place has a lot of great things going for it other than the food. Its located on a corner location with streetside parking. It has outdoor seating if required and the place is bright and airy. The interior seating and order counter are obvious and not challenging to place your order. And the food comes out lickety split. The interior is cute with floor to ceiling murals. I guess they look more like high quality style type spray can murals of Tupac, Selena and so forth. The menu is grouped by Burgers, Sides, Wings, Extras, Milkshakes and Fountain Drinks. They do have a kids portion that they've titled it Lil Bellies, cute! The burgers are smash burgers which I'm a fan of. They have approximately 7 choices from the burger section of the menu and I've tried the Johnny Boi and the Fat Boi. The Fat Boi has two beef smash patties compared to the one. I usually have my burger fully dressed which includes the normal accouterments, but also has their caramelized onions, bbq sauce and smash sauce. What makes these burgers so good is that their is a balance between the bun, beef, all the dressings that one doesn't overpower the other and has a well balanced taste of all the items. Home run! I normally go with the fries but on this last occasion I went with the onions rings. They were ok, and next time I'll go with the tator tots. I do like me a good milkshake but will save my calories for the next visit. If your ever in the downtown old Richmond definitely try out Johnny Boi's burgers. read more

YES, yes, yes! I love a good smash and was so excited to hear a new spot opened in Richmond. The vibes were high upon walking into Johnny Boi and so were the smash burger expectations. Both delivered strong! This new corner spot seems unassuming from yards away, but the closer you get to the front door, you can hear fun tunes and can start getting all the feels. Upon entering your eyes meet the colorful walls paying homage to Bay Area, East Bay, and Cali graffiti art and icons. The menu is short and concise, and you understand they have a system in place to do justice to the smash! Ordering at the counter I did the Johnny Boi, which is just a single patty smash BUT what makes this one unique is the smash sauce, bacon jam, caramelized onions, pickles, American cheese (which I think is crucial), and the soft/fresh bun. My husband had the Fat Boi (double patty) that includes all of the above plus "shredduce" and tomato. I'm a fan of shredduce from the good ol' McDonalds $1 chicken sandwich days haha..but I think the smash stands alone without the veggie toppings. Personal preference for sure. Something cool I noticed is they do smash bowls if you're counting carbs ~ they also have yummy sides like onion rings, fries, tots, Mac n cheese, and wings which looked super juicy.
