A grocery store specializing in Filipino goods in Alphabet City?! Sign me up-- I am happy not to have to schlep out to Staten Island or Woodside anymore to restock on Filipino snacks and seasonings. The space is not very large but it is crammed full of noodles, tinned fruits and fish, and various other Filipino goods that may be difficult to source at very reasonable prices. There are also freshly prepared/baked goods at the front by the register too. As a note, they do take credit cards and Apple Pay with a $10 minimum. If you are looking for something in particular, I would personally suggest calling ahead and asking for them to hold it for you, or to even double check, as lots of things are often sold out. The parking situation is really rough in this area so I advise taking public transportation or walk from Union square. I came into a tiny mart of sorts, that seemingly waz a corner store come up but it was so much more. They were masking head been combinations for sale along with freshly made foods being refrigerated in other breads confections in snacks lining the counter and cooler of drinks. The place woz ceiling to floor wall-to-wall Pinoy goodness! I forgot all about the things I came for and started picking out things to cook this week! The nice young lady and I chatted and reminisced about certain snack and flavors that defined school field trips and childhood in general. I got back on track and picked up the items I came for. You probably don't know this place or need anything from here if you're not "Pinoy."Or you're tied to one. This is the Manhattan's only Filipino convenience store/mart/cargo and money remittance center rolled into one, and inconveniently located in Alphabet City. They sell prepared food like Dinuguan, kare-kare, Mechado etc. on the main floor. While they accept orders of (they don't deliver) party platters on special occasions and holidays. You can pre-order Lumpiang Shanghai (fried spring roll), Pancit Bihon (stir fry noodles) and of course Lechon (roast pork). They sell frozen tocino and longanisa if you don't have time to marinate meat. Canned food is also available here. Hot snacks or sitseryas are available if you're hungry. The basement is the cargo/money remittance office. The services are comparatively cheaper than competitors and you get to take free "balik-bayan" boxes. The staff are knowledgable with their products and services. Probably a best time to brush up with your Tagalog with them. The package I sent last July 14 finally arrived, and it is exactly 2.5 months from when they said it would arrive. Talk about timing. We opted for sea freight because it is the cheaper option albeit a longer delivery time frame. But hey, door to door delivery! My cousin didn't have to deal with customs and all that jazz - box just arrived outside her doorstep. I recommend! I've also been craving for shrimp paste because another cousin bought an 8oz bottle on amazon for $11. I called Johnny Air and they sell for $7. I wish this location was much more accessible so I can just pop by without being discouraged by the commute. My 300th Yelp review goes out to this mini Filipino supermarket! I am new in NYC so I am so happy to find this hidden gem in the lower east side of Manhattan where I work. Although they don't have everything, they definitely have enough things that I was looking for! I bought a can of ligo sardines, purefoods corned beef, purefoods hotdog, silver swan soy sauce, silver swan vinegar (clearly my intention is to make adobo), and some pancit canton. I was so close to buying Jufran banana ketchup, some mama sita afritada seasonings, and sinigang mix. I can always come back. I love that they have the basic necessities for Filipino cuisine. Ok, so I took a long walk to this place and expected something different. I'm not taking a star off just because of how the store looks. It's super super super super super tiny and not so new looking.. but it has packaged food that is all natural! I found tapioca pearls that are natural without additives, that contain cassava starch and water. (What's better than 2 natural ingredients?) They had shrimp chips that were DELICIOUS, and they have dried mango. Only thing is I wish they had a different Filipino brand that does not contain any added sugar. Other than that, the mango was soft and delicious. I tried a few other snacks that I wasn't particularly interested in, but I appreciate that I got to try them! read more

When I moved to NYC from SF last fall I was determined to cook food that would make me miss home less. All the markets I found were in the outer boroughs, except this one ... I made my way out here and must say that from the UWS it is quite the trek. The place is actually a lot smaller than it looked in the pictures, which is mainly because they have a huge mirrored type wall at the back end of the store -- which I almost ran into while there =X. They have all the bare necessities that you'd need to make your general dishes, various snacks, and condiments (i.e. jufran, spicy vinegar). But something that they don't have, that I end up having to scour Chinatown for was produce. I always end up spending $100+ on each of my visits here, which can be a bit rough on the wallet but Filipino food is a MUST. In the end I give this place 4 stars because it is one place I can go to get 99% of the items I need to make the dishes my soul craves. read more

Was really disappointed when several Filipino restaurants in Manhattan closed last year. Lo and behold, Johnny Air arrived! It has all the basic essentials to cook your own Filipino food (sinigang packets, pancit of every kind, frozen longganisa, bagoong, etc) and heaps of reasonably priced ready made stuff for under $5. The main reason I give it 5 stars is Johnny Air also has a reputable courier service to several places in the Philippines. I've had care packages stolen or opened when sent by the local postal office and one of my colleagues was bribed 2500 Pesos ($50US) by a PI postal worker standing under a "we do not bribe" sign so she could get t-shirts from the states. So sad :( I've even spent $130 to send something safely via UPS! His courier service does door-to-door service for $5 extra and delivers by the pound (as cheap as $3.49/ pound) depending on how fast you want it to get there. My family got their Christmas presents safe and sound... and early (what Filipino time?!). The store was even kind enough to stay open late so I could do some grocery shopping after I mailed my packages. Get your hopia and balikbayan (return boxes to the PI) on here. Filipino convenient store in Manhattan?! I am sold! As I was walking up Avenue A, I randomly made eye contact with a filipino man sweeping the floor inside this small little store. So, I decided to check out his store, only to find out there was a treasure of filipino goods and groceries inside! I was so amazed to have found this place. I usually make random treks to Queens to satisfy my Filipino food cravings. This place has all the filipino cooking essentials, including all the ingredients for Halo-halo (sweet filipino dessert) and sweet bread rolls. They even have frozen foods for you to heat up at home. I bought a couple of those because I never have time to go grocery shopping and have the pleasure of making good-ole filipino food. They have kare-kare (oxtail curry stew), pinakbet (vegetable dish), and adobo piksaw (pork in soy sauce stew). Each one were about $3-4 each. read more

I wanted to host a Kamayan feast at my apartment with friends, so I started seeking out places where I could buy all the ingredients I needed. After scouring Chinatown, I was disappointed because none of the ingredients I needed were there. Lo and behold, Johnny Air Mart came up on Yelp as a trusty source for some of the more hard-to-nab items. So I popped in and grabbed the following: - Banana leaves (note: you might have to check the downstairs freezer for these. $2.99 a pack. You'll need two packs to cover a table for 6. - Halo halo mix - oddly enough, I couldn't even find this staple in Chinatown. $3.99 - Longanisa sausages. I picked up three kinds. They were each $5.99-$6.99 each. - Banana Ketchup. BTW I had never had this before in my life, and it is pretty awesome. It's like if Sriracha, sweet and sour sauce, and Tabasco had a baby, this would be their lovechild. $1.59 (I think) - Patis fish sauce - Calamansi extract. We made a rum, mint, and calamansi cocktail for the party and it was really yummy. $5.49 - it's strong, so you don't need a whole lot. I found all the prices really reasonable, except for maybe their Magnolia Ice Cream, which was priced at $10 each. Otherwise, everything else was fair. The staff was okay - sorta blase about life but whatever. That's the only reason why I'm knocking it down a star. It's not the most well-stocked deli, nor is it that organized, but it's got the basics and gets the job done without charging an arm and leg for everything. read more

The worst Filipino Store I ever visited. Their civilian unlicensed security guard sitting in front of the cashier was very nasty and extremely gossip. He invented bad issues every customer from relationships, lifestyle and immigration status. Beware illegal customers. That guy will spread your immigration status to everyone and you will be in big trouble. Their manager never care about his attitude and was just laughing and tolerating him. I came here to mail a package to the Philippines. It's not cheap, and, it would have been nice to know that it was preferable to mail clothing and other such items in a bag. Live and learn. Introduced to this place by my filipino buddy. The guys behind the register seemed like they were probably the owners - very laid back and friendly. Lots of ready to eat, homemade goodies in the front. We bought some sweet filipino sausages, taro bread, and sweet cakes. The mark up is a bit high but everything is delicious and authentic. Its pretty small but they have all the essentials a filipina girl cannot live without like avocado ice cream, pancit bihon noodles, and sukang( translated as cane vinegar for u white folk). There is a lady who hangs around the establishment with the most miserable communication skills -- likes to pretend she doesn't speak nor understand her native language, yet cannot express herself in English. Good for dry and canned Asian goods. I get my hook up of spring roll skins, bed thread noodles, dried mango and other exotic canned goods. They have a lot of sweets, steamed buns, prepared food for sale but I haven't been that adventurous. Sometimes I'm not sure how long the items have been there. On weekends they roast an entire pig and sell the meat. It apparently sells out by lunch. read more

Ever since I had my first experience with Filipino food in Woodside, I've been wanting to expose myself to Filipino cooking. Fortunately for me, I found Johnny Air Mart by my hood! I decided to make chicken adobo that night with lumpia. I actually had a considerably long conversation with the owner and he gave me some tips on cooking my chicken adobo after purchasing some vinegar and prepackaged pork lumpia. Unfortunately the lumpia was too filled with lard for my taste. I will try the chicken lumpia next time and see if it's better. I can't wait to go back to try the Pan de Sal and Halo Halo. My boyfriend has gotten their steamed pork buns. The bun itself is pretty fluffy and I don't remember how the pork tastes exactly. The bun does remind me of Chinese steamed chicken from dimsum though. read more
