I have been meaning to try some filipino snacks for a while and I'm glad to find a place in lower Manhattan that sells them. They have a good variety of chips, ube snacks, sauces, and drinks. Some of the snacks a priced a little higher than other places though. I am glad they have all the flavors of pancit noodles to try here. They even have the illusive nagaraya nut snacks.

    Filipino snacks & staples!

How is prepping for an event and also wanted some tasty Filipino snacks, so a search delivered me to Johnny's. The parking situation is really rough in this area so I advise taking public transportation or walk from Union square. I came into a tiny mart of sorts, that seemingly waz a corner store come up but it was so much more. They were masking head been combinations for sale along with freshly made foods being refrigerated in other breads confections in snacks lining the counter and cooler of drinks. The place woz ceiling to floor wall-to-wall Pinoy goodness! I forgot all about the things I came for and started picking out things to cook this week! The nice young lady and I chatted and reminisced about certain snack and flavors that defined school field trips and childhood in general. I got back on track and picked up the items I came for. She scooped up a few items I needed, and suggested I get them, I definitely needed them. Even the BF celebrated the purchases when I got home, lol. Boy bawang, lumpia Shanghai ingredients, Filipino chicken batter and tropical fruit juice.... all in one trip, yes please!

You probably don't know this place or need anything from here if you're not "Pinoy."Or you're tied to one. This is the Manhattan's only Filipino convenience store/mart/cargo and money remittance center rolled into one, and inconveniently located in Alphabet City. They sell prepared food like Dinuguan, kare-kare, Mechado etc. on the main floor. While they accept orders of (they don't deliver) party platters on special occasions and holidays. You can pre-order Lumpiang Shanghai (fried spring roll), Pancit Bihon (stir fry noodles) and of course Lechon (roast pork). They sell frozen tocino and longanisa if you don't have time to marinate meat. Canned food is also available here. Hot snacks or sitseryas are available if you're hungry. The basement is the cargo/money remittance office. The services are comparatively cheaper than competitors and you get to take free "balik-bayan" boxes. The staff are knowledgable with their products and services. Probably a best time to brush up with your Tagalog with them. I could come here often if it's not so out of way from where I live.

Filipino convenient store in Manhattan?! I am sold! As I was walking up Avenue A, I randomly made eye contact with a filipino man sweeping the floor inside this small little store. So, I decided to check out his store, only to find out there was a treasure of filipino goods and groceries inside! I was so amazed to have found this place. I usually make random treks to Queens to satisfy my Filipino food cravings. This place has all the filipino cooking essentials, including all the ingredients for Halo-halo (sweet filipino dessert) and sweet bread rolls. They even have frozen foods for you to heat up at home. I bought a couple of those because I never have time to go grocery shopping and have the pleasure of making good-ole filipino food. They have kare-kare (oxtail curry stew), pinakbet (vegetable dish), and adobo piksaw (pork in soy sauce stew). Each one were about $3-4 each.

No expiration date on food items! Is this even legal? Be mindful when you shop here. The food you buy may already be spoiled.

They were packed full of flavor and one if the best pork skewers I've ever had. We also had the pork sisig, which had a great mix of tender and crispy pork pieces. It was paired great with the garlic rice. And for dessert, we had the ube sipao, which came out warm and topped with coconut and filled with ube -- the perfect way to end a meal. They have a lot of small tables. Service was pretty quick and staff members were nice and answered all questions. It's a place I would definitely return to in the future.

It's not the biggest restaurant though, so we probably got lucky (you should definitely make a res). -- Pork BBQ skewers were so delicious! The BBQ sauce was just the right amount of sweet, and the pork was cooked so well (juicy and tender). Portion size did feel a bit small for the price point, though -- Pork sisig was good. I liked how the onions / sour flavouring complemented the savoury flavour of the pork. It was a bit too salty to eat by itself (and we didn't quite finish), but fortunately we had some rice on the side to mellow it out somewhat. -- Finally we had the bangus binalot, which was good too. Milkfish is not the most common to find in the US and I was pleasantly surprised to find such a great dish here. It did not feel too oily/heavy from frying, and the fish paired excellently with the fragrant garlic rice. Overall, I had a very nice meal, and the price point was not unreasonable. I think overall the food felt a little salty, but otherwise everything was quite delicious. I think they've moved (nearby) since my visit and I'd love to re-visit and try some of their other dishes!

Unfortunately, we were immediately told that they would not be taking any walk-ins So, just one friend and I snagged a reservation for the following Saturday. This time around they did let in a few walk-ins at the bar, but they cut that off pretty quickly. It seems the space is much larger than you would expect. We were seated right in front by the window so I didn't go back and explore, but the more you know. Staff were really lovely and attentive and gave us a few recommendations as well. Pancit Kabute - There is no subtle way to explain that this is hands down one of the best noodle dishes I have ever had. So creamy and mushroomy; the fried egg on top is such a perfect addition. YOU NEED TO TRY THIS. I will be back for this over and over and over... Classic Filipino Platter with Chicken Adobo - Just really classic and simple. Very well made, loved the chicken. Comes with a lovely, gingery broth. Salted Egg Pancake - Delicious and the perfect way to end the brunch on a sweet note. Tastes almost like an elevated corn cake (maybe even pound cake). The addition of citrus is so perfect. You can't go here and not get this (this is what first caught my eye on social media actually). For one of my best friends being Filipino, it's a little surprising that I haven't had a lot of Filipino food. I've dabbled, but nothing had really stood out until this experience. Amazing! I've been recommending this place to everyone I know.
