I love anytime a place has homemade potato chips as an option. I liked the steak sandwich and chips, but it was all pretty greasy and fatty and I was craving something fresh after. I also tried the ghost pepper cheese balls which were good, but not as spicy as I was expecting. My mom had the breaded tenderloin and loved it. Since I ordered for delivery, I can't speak to service, but everything arrived quickly and packaged well.

Who knew that a dive bar could have such great food? Apparently, it has been a known fact in my…read morehousehold that the Mousetrap slaps, but I've been ignorant to this fact because a) I'm somewhat bougie, and b) my bougie-ness sometimes clouds my thinking when it comes to good food, and c) I never think of a dive bar as a destination for food, let alone good food. Because how good can bar food be, really? Thus, the Mousetrap has always been on my list to visit, but only for drinks and maybe music. But on this particular day, the stars aligned, the universe sent children hither and yon, and I was asked to have an adults-only early dinner at Mousetrap, so that I could be shown how very wrong my ignorant opinions about dive-bar food -- or, at least, Mousetrap food -- have been. Wow! I am happy to admit that whatever I was thinking about the food at Mousetrap was all wrong. This bar punches above its weight, for sure. We got the cheeseburger and turkey melt, and both were amazing. The cheeseburger was thick and homemade, and it cost less than a wimpy burger you'd get at McDonald's. The turkey melt was perfectly toasted and had several slices of turkey and melty cheese. Burgers and sandwiches come with potato chips, but you can substitute fries for an additional fee. The chili is phenomenal, by the way. We got a cup of the chili because it says on the menu that it won awards. How can you not taste award-winning chili?! I can believe this chili is award-winning, because the chili at the Mousetrap is some of the best chili I've ever tasted. Get it with "everything," which comes with bacon, cheese, thin slices of jalapeño and sour cream. This is some dang chili I'll be dreaming about once the cold weather comes in. I should mention that all of the items on the menu have silly names. For instance, my turkey melt was called Turkey Melt Your Face, and the cheeseburger, for whatever inane reason, was called Built to Last. "I'm not saying any of these stupid names!" I said to everyone and no one as I slammed the menu down on the table. It turns out, the server knew exactly what I meant when I said "turkey melt." Imagine that. Luckily, the beer is called what it's called. I got the Destihl Brewery Deadhead Tour Bus, which is a hazy IPA, and I loved it. I don't drink beer very often, but when I do, I appreciate the hoppy IPAs. Speaking of The Dead, the Mousetrap has so much Grateful Dead and Jerry Garcia stuff everywhere, inside and outside, that I expected to walk in and hear the band jamming over the speakers. Fortunately, I heard zero Grateful Dead and/or Phish songs, which I was grateful (dead) for.

There's a wheelchair ramp in the middle of the building - I'll be honest, I don't quite trust it as I've noticed people in this parking area tend to block it without noticing it. There's also easy access from a ramp at the end of the building. Lawrence has done quite a bit to improve their curb cuts in this area, an area that has grown massively since my last review including 2-3 apartment buildings, a library branch, and an improved civic plaza. Fort Ben Pub itself is pretty accessible, though it becomes less so when it's packed (for example, my most recent visit was on a Friday karaoke night and accessibility was definitely more limited). There's two glass doors going inside the pub and, yes, they do offer a few tables on the sidewalk for outside dining. As you enter, you arrive in a large dining area with a beautiful bar to the right. The restaurant is decorated in warm woods with a few televisions of varying sizes and, on this evening, background music playing. On this visit, I was with a festival after-party that was placed off the main area in a smaller area that had two pool tables along with a variety of food/appetizers, etc. It's a cozy room that gave me a chance to check out the rest of the building. I did see the restrooms, which I would definitely not consider accessible - plan accordingly. I could possibly get in the door of the men's restroom, but it was quite tight and I have a smaller chair. This is a beloved place for a friend of mine who lives nearby and within walking distance. They treat her well. She was there during this visit, and I honestly just smiled at their clear affection for her (it's mutual). I love places that become community, and knowing this makes me want to return. That said, my accessibility concerns do somewhat limit my options. Fort Ben Pub does offer space for private events/groups and does catering. They have pool tables, Putt Putt live, Mega Touch, and Golden Tee and most of the sports network channels. While I'd tried both their tenderloin and burger in the past, I had a variety of items this time around due to the after-party, though not everything it seems was on the menu (or I'm just not recognizing it). As I noted previously and my friend also proves, the employees are super friendly and helpful. There are definitely times when it gets busy, though it's also pretty easy to come here during slower times. This particular visit was the first time I'd experienced accessibility issues. There's an awful lot to love here. I have to say that while I wasn't in the room with karaoke, the people were having a blast with such sincere enthusiasm that I was almost in awe. I've done karaoke one time in my life, and I don't think there's enough alcohol in the world to fuel another attempt. I also know from being close to the folks at Moo & Lou that these businesses watch out for each other - which I really like as it's a nice little safety factor. In the end, my star rating isn't changing but my appreciation for Fort Ben Pub has grown. This visit made me want to return in the near future, and it made me grateful for those places where you can get so comfortable that it feels like the people become part of your village. That's Fort Ben Pub.

Note: they also have a decent selection of bourbons and local beer on tap and by the can. 3.) I can't stop thinking about the homemade ricotta bacon jam with sliced baguette. All thoughts of eating healthy were swept aside when this dish rolled out. "Healthy who?" 4.) I'm always advocating that beets could use more representation on menus (besides in salads...). If you're a fellow beet advocate, I'd give the pickled beets with whipped goat cheese and sliced almonds a try. 5.)
