We dropped in Sunday around 2pm. It wasn't busy at all. They have both outside and indoor seatings. Only 1 table outside and inside were taken. It was a windy day so we decided to sit inside due to bad allergies. We chose the $50 single vineyard flight of 3 wines: Syrah and 2 cabs and the $70 single vineyard flight : Syrah, 2 cabs, chard, and a sparkling rose. The wines were complex and didn't taste cheap. All the wines were smooth. It's just pricey. Wished they waived a tasting with a bottle purchase but it was a $250 minimum purchase to waive 1 tasting. The wine I tasted was pretty good! I didn't try a glass but a sip of one that was suppose to be good! Justin who worked there was really nice and gave us very good suggestions. I tried their Sauvignon blanc that was decent. This is like a lounge but located in downtown, with a lowkey vibe. We came on a Friday and it was not that crowded. Hands down one of the best wine tasting experiences I've ever had at John Anthony Vineyards Church Vineyard. The wine was absolutely amazing across every variety we tried, the pairings were thoughtful and delicious, and the location is both beautiful and incredibly convenient. It was an incredible experience, informative and well curated. Allison, our guide, was extremely knowledgeable and personable. She is very grounded and easy to talk to, while being a great host and spokesperson for John Anthony. It's has an upscale and minimalist element to the design with great details and little love notes to their various wineries. My husband and I had such an amazing experience here!!! Like a lot of other reviews, the ambiance is at first questionable especially if you stop in early in the day because it's a smaller more intimate tasting room. However, we really enjoyed the one on one experience we got. Our sommelier was amazing! He made some great suggestions based on what we told him we liked and let us try some additional wines that were not on our tasting list and really took the time to get to know us and make us feel special and welcome. He was personable, professional and a wealth of knowledge. The wineeeeeeee!!!!!! Oh my. It is amazing!!! Do not sleep on these wines! Will be buying some more and shipping it to the house. Came here with my girlfriend on a Wednesday night with a Priority Wine Pass. The sommelier greeted us and explained that we could purchase just one tasting if we were okay sharing glasses, and the pass would entitle us to a few extra discretionary pours. We decided on the portfolio tasting. She asked me what I liked and I said cabernet sauvignon. We started with the NV sparkling, which was light and refreshing. She then poured us the 2023 Carneros sauvignon blanc, which had an unusually tropical nose of papaya and pineapple; she explained that this, as well as the high alcohol content of 15.4%, was the result of allowing the grapes to ripen for longer than others. We then proceeded to the 2022 Jameson Canyon chardonnay, which was smooth and buttery. The 2021 Carneros Gap syrah was fruity with some notes of spice and barbecued meat. She then poured us a vertical of the 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2020 Napa Valley cabernet sauvignon (the 2019 and 2020 were part of the regular tasting, while the 2017 and 2018 were bonus pours). I liked the 2017 the best, with great structure, bold tannins, and a slight amount of earth. My girlfriend liked the 2018 the best, with more mellow tannins and a more fruity, approachable palate. Based on our preferences from the last round, our somm poured two additional premium wines: the 2019 R/D cab for me and the 2019 Epps cab for my girlfriend. The somm definitely knew what she was doing, since the character of each wine was indeed quite similar to the ones we liked before respectively, though by that time we were a little too drunk to definitively say that the single-vineyard cabs were better than the Napa Valley cabs. Overall, this was an excellent experience, and with its convenient hours and walkable location, this is a great choice after dinner if you're staying in downtown Napa. At $60 for 10 pours shared between 2 people (note that the actual number you get with a pass could vary), this is also a good value given the premium quality of the wine. read more

I stopped in this tasting room in downtown Napa on a September Saturday evening during harvest season. The Napa streets were abuzz with people, diners and music. My husband and I dropped into John Anthony for a nightcap while we were staying in Napa. It was conveniently located right next to our hotel, and we were able to walk in easily at 9:00 on a Saturday night. The space was reasonably attractive in a loungey kind of way (we sat on an animal hide sofa). If you're looking at photos on Yelp, you should note that the really pretty place is the actual vineyard, I think--in any case not the tasting room in downtown Napa. There weren't tastings available that late at night, so we settled in with a couple of glasses. I got the sauvignon blanc and my husband got the pinot. Both were solid, but I guess we didn't get the full experience of a daytime visit. We did have the pleasure of listening to a blowhard customer who came in right after we sat down and talked loudly and non-stop for the remainder of our stay. Anyway, can't blame John Anthony for its clientele (though I did get the sense he was a friend of the bar, or at least a local character), and the guy who helped us was perfectly polite. We enjoyed our wine and would maybe swing back if we were back in downtown Napa during tasting hours. read more

We did the reserved tasting. Everything was excellent. Our favorite was the Chardonnay 2017 and the Syrah 2016. Just bummed that one of the wine my companions wanted to purchase was out of stock. While visiting Napa we came here for a visit. We had never heard of John Anthony wines, but the lounge looked great and the experience matched that! Our wine educator was very knowledgeable, not only about their wines, but also about the area and other wineries. He did a great job providing us with the wine tasting notes and describing each wine we tasted and he was spot-on with regard to nose and palate. He was generous with his pours and offered a couple of wines that we might enjoy that weren't part of the basic tasting. Their glasses were spotless and of the correct weight to offer a great experience to those of us who truly appreciate the entire wine-drinking experience. I would highly recommend stopping in here for a tasting and be sure to take some home, this is very good wine! read more

Yelp find! Yes...went to Napa just to say I've finally been to Napa. No, I didn't visit any wineries but did visit Main Street Napa (which was okay). As we walked around for a bit and ate, I Yelped wine tasting and John Anthony (JA as I will call it), popped up. High ratings and reviews and opened late on a Sunday (1000pm). Score!!! I had my son with me and they cute lady who helped us with the wine tasting said it was no problem for him to join us inside (but not for wines of course). JA was awesome. The interior was nice, the service was awesome (I didn't catch the gal's name but she was working Sunday night, 2/15), the wines were good and I think the wine tasting flights were affordable as well. $15 for 3 flights and more if you do the other samplings. I ended up getting a bottle of their Sauvignon Blanc after the tasting so they comp'ed the wine tasting and I just paid for the bottle (I think that's typical when you wine taste). All in all a great time for me even though we never made it out to a winery. The service is legit here as well as the wine. Check it out!
