While I visit Newman rather sporadically just to drop in on the parentals, I know now about C.R…read more Fudge Company hidden dangerously close around the corner. Now, I suddenly feel those visits may increase exponentially. I've also never stepped in the store, but have only longingly gazed at it from outside, as they were still closed for the New Year. But if there's one thing I can say about it, it's that the fudge is amazing. Unfortunately, I could only try two kinds, but the fact that I plowed through the Tupperware full of the Peppermint fudge seems to tell me I'd probably enjoy other varieties with as much enthusiasm. I've also tried the Gingerbread but the Peppermint won me over. It's incredibly soft with chunks of soft peppermint candy sunk into the chocolate. But unlike other fudge that often feels so dense and so sugary your teeth start to hurt, C.R.'s makes it feel like a light indulgence and fantastic (nightly) dessert--so good that you eat five or six and pretty soon you've managed to eat your way to the bottom of the box. My mom tells me that the fudge's sweetness is matched only by Carol herself who makes the delectable squares. It warms me to know such talent surfaces in a little town, and unlike other shops that may fall by the wayside, C.R. Fudge better stay in business if the people know what's good for them. As the saying goes, "Eating some fudge a day keeps the blues away as well as your six pack abs but no one really cares about that."

Giant chunks of flavorful and moist chicken, shredded lettuce and tomatoes (I nixed the onions), on a super soft bagel. The bagel itself was so delicious; the mix of warm bagel and oils from the pesto and cheese made it delicious and soft. I scarfed down half my sandwich and saved the rest for later. Will definitely head back another visit for more sandwiches and bagels! Physically it's a moderately large space with tables inside, tidy and clean.

The store is always clean and the staff is always friendly -- although perhaps a little too friendly. It's a small town, everyone knows each other, so occasionally, checker chatter slows your exit. That's certainly not a deal breaker for me, but I have noticed people in line looking a little frustrated as talk turns to babies, family and etc... The produce and meat departments are outstanding and the rest of the store is always stocked and well organized. The store is on par with the Nob hill in Livermore and the Raley's in Turlock. And considering Nob Hill is effectively the only legit grocery store within a 10 or 15 mile radius, the City of Newman is lucky to have them.

So, as you're driving down the I-5 and looking for a place to get delicious sandwiches, this is the perfect spot! And, while you're there, stock up on wide variety of handcrafted sausages, brats, beef sticks, bacon, marinated meats, dry rubs and more! We brought an insulated bag with ice packs to put them in. We grabbed some for family we were visiting in Sacramento and stopped again on our way back home to stock up. We tried the Brisket and Ribeye sandwiches. The bread got soft fast, maybe a little too soft. They were both hot sandwiches so not sure if it was from a little too much bbq sauce, juices from the meat or how it's wrapped. The brisket and ribeye were tender and juicy. I liked the Ribeye a little more since it had mushrooms, bell peppers and onion. I would have liked the bread to be more toasty since we ate the sandwiches there. But, that's my preference; I love more texture in my food. Loved the variety of sausages, brats and beef sticks that we got. The bacon was a lot thinner than we're used to. We bought lots of their dry Wolfsen's seasoning since it's one of my bf's favorites! I loved that the beef sticks that weren't too oily and very tasty. I wish we had gotten more of them! The sausages were so flavorful!! We tried them in a variety of dishes. We really liked the Smoked Blueberry Bratwurst, Smoked Andouille Sausage, Smoked Chuckwagon sausage, Cajun Style Smoked Sausage and Smoked German Pork Sausage.
