It is a fairly large store inside and not much in terms of organization so you really are just left with perusing around in the store for quite a bit of time. Lots of prices increased probably due to inflation as some sticker prices often show what was the previous price. In some cases, by quite a bit. They have a sewing machine area that is focused on a particular brand - not Singer and most of the Singer brand machines are off to the side. They really do showcase the more expensive and more elaborate machines. If you have the money to get one and want to learn, I am sure there are plenty of classes to show this. It is tucked away in an old shopping center, but not too far away from the highway so that is good. What I do like about this place is that the parking is plentiful. I just left Joann Fabric for the first and last time. I walked around the store looking at every black cloth I could find for one that would fit my needs. Nothing was wide enough. I looked for an employee and found one lady sitting near the sewing machines nearby. She was helpful but it turned out she was a Viking representative and not a Joann employee. She wasn't familiar with the store enough to help. She was nice and offered to try at least though. Unable to find anyone else, I asked around the store more in my own. I found the wide fabric section (I'm amazed there was one, that's nice) and a fabric that might work. I was looking at the fabric and unrolled a few feet when an employee finally came up to me. She didn't offer to help but just told me to stop what I was doing without explaining why. She asked if I was going to buy it and I said I was, "if it met my needs" which I was checking. She took and rerolled the fabric. I think it would have met my needs and I needed 40'. I was too upset to stay in the store though. I'm never going back. read more

If you don't have to go here, DON'T! They easily have the worst customer service of any JoAnn store I have been too. The lines are always so long for fabric and the checkout. We just went there to get an item and they wouldn't honor a coupon they have. At best, the coupon was terribly worded and, at worst, they just didn't care. So, we placed the order online to pickup right there and they just said it had to go through the system. We told the manager what has happened and they would not do anything to help the process at all. Therefore, we would have to come back to the store when ever they process the order (they said it could take up to 5 days). Just don't come here, there are way better fabric places in Rockville. Or head to the JoAnn in Wheaton, where we have always had great service. read more

I love the selection of fabric, crafty items and sales here , but the customer service is a nightmare. Went today and let my daughter pick out some fabric so I could make her a special teddy bear. When my number was FINALLY called and I lay the bolt on the counter, the cutter yelled out " YOU REALIZE THIS IS 16.99$ A YARD DON'T YOU!!!???" Yes, I can read and yes I can do basic math and yes I can afford 1/3 yard of 16.99$ a yard fabric! Geez! She made me feel like she thought I was either dirt poor or really dense. It was half price too so it came to 2.83$. She really needed to embarrass me over 2.83$ worth of brown fabric? When I got in line to pay ,just like last week, there were about a dozen customers in line with one red haired cashier who had a full out conversation that lasted several minutes with that customer AFTER she paid. Don't mind all the rest of us in line. All of us want to hear all about said customers recent trip too because we just love standing in line. NOT! They move like turtles here. Make that rude, grumpy and nasty turtles with bad attitudes. Every time I go here, it's the same nasty employees. I know this review won't make much of a difference because of the scarcity of fabric shops in the area but I just needed to write this, maybe for my own sanity. The fabric cutting table is THe BANE OF MY EXISTENCE. *breathe* but really, I've never walked out without feeling high anxiety so just prepare yourself before you go in. Why? It's because 1) the snail pace the workers here work 2) the randomness they take cutting orders. I mean, they have a numbered ticket taker so you'd think they would let people take numbers and go in order right? Never! It's random and usually the pushiest customers that get taken care of first. I'm giving 1 star for their selection since it's actually pretty good for such a small store and one more star because the workers there, though slow, are always polite. Hoping some new management will come in and whip everyone into shape?!?? Wishful thinking I know. So if you have a ton of time on your hands, proceed with caution. Make sure you download their app to get coupons but always get the coupon first since their internet is crappy inside. Also if you have a big purchase coming up, sign up for their text messages and get 20% your entire order. In general though, you're much better off shopping on fabric.com or Etsy. read more

Ok, it's a Joann's. They carry a lot of stuff. Some is reasonably priced. If it isn't, wait a day or two; they'll issue a coupon or put it on sale. Unfortunately, the store is messy, and some of the staff is less than friendly and customer-oriented. I was in recently, and was LITERALLY the only customer in the store. I made some fabric selections and made my way to the cutting table, where an employee was working. As I placed my bolts on the counter, she asked me if I had number (they have a deli-style "take a number" ticket dispenser). I said I did not, and hated to waste paper taking a ticket when there was clearly no one else in the store. She replied that customers "needed to be taught" and refused to cut my fabric until I had a number. Pulled a number from the machine, and showed it to the employee, who then announced flipped the indicator and called out the number over the PA system. It was, of course my number, because as you'll recall, I was the ONLY customer in the entire store. Wow. Just...wow. read more

I'm a one woman sweatshop. Back in the day, when my friends and I would dress up (cosplay) for anime and comic-book conventions, I would whip out costume after costume as if the fate of the universe resided in our ability to look *exactly* like our characters. One time, I hand stitched together a cheerleader costume (from Buffy) in the back seat of a cramped Ford Focus driven by a drunk crazy girl on a 10 hour ride down to Atlanta. However, to afford all of these costumes, I had to shop for the cheapest most rock-bottom prices for fabrics that I could. And thus my love-hate relationship with Jo-Ann's...and more specifically, with *THIS* Jo-Ann's was born. I suppose that I can't really fault Jo-Ann's for the lack in selection in some of the fabrics, as Jo-Ann's caters to the quilting crowd. However, I can definitely fault them on staff that don't understand sewing or crafts, and the lack of organization in the store. The majority of Jo-Ann's fabrics is cotton. Specifically, quilting cotton. Quilting cottons in all sorts of weird, tacky, bizarre patterns and designs. If you're a quilter, I'm totally sorry for raggin' on the quilting cottons, but let's be honest, they really are pretty crazy. There is a decent selection of fleece, however, again, in crazy, tacky, bizarre patterns (finding solid colored fleece can be a trial), and a selection of cheap polyester and satins. To make a costume, it's not just about finding fabrics in the right color, but also of the right weight and type of fabric so that when you move, the fabric moves in a way to resemble the character the costume is supposed to represent. On top of this, because my friends and I were (are) lushes, I also had to find fabric that wouldn't spot or show stains when we spilled our drinks (as we were wont to do, after 8 or 14 hours of drinking). As I said, the selection at this Jo-Ann's is slim for my needs, however, they undoubtedly had the cheapest prices of the three fabric stores around me. In addition, they often had coupons and mailers, that allowed my meager costuming budget stretch far. However, as I was buying fabric on a meager budget, I would often try to "skimp" out on the number of yards I needed of a specific fabric. Most of the time, it was fine, but a few times, I ran out of the fabric, and had to come back to Jo-Ann's for more. And inevitably, they would be out. I always kept my receipts, so I had the SKU numbers, and although Jo-Ann's *SAY* that they can special order more fabric for you, as long as you had the SKU number, I have yet to have a single yard of special ordered fabric come in. Then there is the staff. I'm not sure what are Jo-Ann's hiring practices, but at this one location, it seems that they have hired the absolute most UNhelpful staff possible. Sure, all of the staffers have sewn before...but it was back in junior high HomeEc class! They can't help with helping you decide on interfacing weights, or if there are any more 9" zippers in bright red, or the best needle to use with a specific type of fabric. I'm usually lucky if I can get them to cut my fabric instead of tearing it (which works fine for cotton, but will create runs in some types of fabric). I won't get into the attitude. Although I've run into a few staffers who have been nice and helpful, the majority act like they will stab you with their scissors if you turn your back on them. Despite all this, I still come here. Although I have since stopped costuming, I still sew, and Jo-Ann's is a great place to get cheap fabric to use as a "test" or for a throw-away project. However, if unless you know what you're doing, visit at your own risk. read more

Today was the first day I went into a Jo-Ann Fabrics. I'm going to have to beg for forgiveness from Michael's, where my love of arts and crafts first began. But Jo-Ann Fabrics was a bit closer and I needed to buy some embroidery floss since I promised one of my students free time to make friendship bracelets. I scored a set of 27 colors on sale for under $3! Although this store doesn't look like much from the outside, and is unfortunately not very inviting on the inside, it served its purpose and I wouldn't hesitate to return for other craft items. They had a decent selection of scrapbooking products. This store, like Michael's and Target, has a dollar aisle, although it's very limited. I found a few little books for school. St. Patrick's Day decor was 50% off, so I was lured into buying a cute porcelain decoration to hang in the house. It subsequently fell on my floor and broke due to the poor quality of the faux-suede material it hung on. The fabrics in the store really didn't do much for me since I've never been into quilting or costume-making, but I imagine that's why a lot of people come here. The girl working the cash register was very friendly and helpful. She offered up a coupon to use, although I had some that were sent in the mail. **Teachers: Ask for a rewards card and receive 15% off for each purchase. As a general rule, the women who work at this location are angry and old. They're Rude with a capital "R." I'm not sure who is holding them hostage and forcing them to cut fabric, but for the love of all that is good in the world: PLEASE LET THEM GO. I dread coming here because they're so unpleasant and the line is almost always long and extraordinarily slow-moving. There are two exceptions to the nasty employee rule. 1. The guy from Philly who may be the manager is by far the friendliest person in the place. He's funny and helpful to boot. 2. There was a young girl working the register the other day who was nice, too. I think their stock is decent. I've made several skirts from their selection of stretchy fabrics. If I was in to quilting, this place would be like heaven from an inventory standpoint. They have sewing equipment and supplies. Patterns. Floral arranging things. They have more candy melts than seem feasible. Plus, I fee like 50% off the store stock is on sale at all times. If it's not on sale, it's really easy to find coupons using the phone app. I do not come here often. In fact I wish there was somewhere else to go that could match their inventory, prices and location, but I haven't found it. read more

Like other reviewers, I have a love-hate relationship with this Joann's. I do a lot of quilting, and sometimes I just don't want/need the designer fabrics from the quilt shops. I buy all of my batting by the yard here (40% off coupons!), and thread. There's a Viking shop too, so if you've got one of their machines you can pick up fabrics and any machine accessories you need in one go. The customer service is definitely lacking, though some of the staff really do try. It's just too bad you have to "know" who is worth dealing with. The man who seems to be the manager is always rude, and often complains to customers about all of his own "issues"...the younger ladies tend to be much nicer, though not always particularly knowledgeable or helpful. Make sure to take a number at the cutting counter (then go back to browsing fabrics, it could be a while, especially if any of the customers are chatty). Definitely allow for a little extra fabric...most of their cutters are especially sloppy, and you could lose up to two inches just straightening fabric (assuming they didn't just cut it too short to begin with). It's worth it to get the app for your 40% off coupon and to check up on sales. There's no such thing as "not on sale" at a craft store, but items that are "marked down" 25% or 30%, just wait for the sale to end so you can use the 40% coupon. If you can, go to the Frederick Joann's instead. Much friendlier, and it's a much bigger store so they have better selections and better organization. read more

I'm so sorry to disappoint Fenny, who was excited to see the bad review I intended to write after my first trip here. :-) While some of the negative experiences of that trip still stand (he-llo staff that knows nothing about sewing), my 2nd trip was miles better, so I have had to settle on a solid 3-star rating. I have to give them a small amount of a break on the first trip, because they had just moved everything in the store and noone knew where anything was. They didn't seem to have what I needed, but I found it easily on the 2nd trip. (That being said, the staff member helping me found the right section the first time, and if she had any desire to help me, which she clearly didn't from her attitude, we would've been able to find the right item in that section in the first place, without need for my making a 2nd trip.) As useless as the customer service/info staff is, the thing that bumps them up to 3-stars is really the guy at the checkout. He was so friendly that it is impossible for him not to gain them an extra star. It also helps that he accidentally gave me half-off one of my ($1.69) purchases, and when I said "Oh I didn't realize those were on sale too, I should go get more" he said "Oh, they weren't supposed to be, I messed up, but now they are for you, go get more anyways." !!! Ok, so it was less than $2 I saved by going to get 2 more, but it was just cool of him. Also, so many thing really were on sale! I got a number of items for 50% off, which is great, and the guy said they have sales frequently so... perhaps now that I have some sense of what I need I'll be back. I have shopped in other Jo-Ann and know that it's nothing compare to G Street Fabric or Calico Corner in terms of selection and service. At the same time, the prices at Jo-Ann stores are usually better. I know their fabric cutting table and register is usually under staffed with just one or two people working. When I visited this store, there was one person at the cutting table (10+ people waiting) and one person at the register (8 people in front of me and the line got longer as I was waiting). And there was no one working on the floor. It was a mess. read more

On 2 June I received an email that the order was cancelled because the items were no longer available. The fabric store has no thread? I have stopped going to this one store in Gaithersburg. The help there is so unpleasant from employees at cutting table to the cashier. They have no interest in what you need or are working on. Jo-Ann's fabrics is all we have left in this county since Hancock closed. Yes they have great sales and decent selection on other crafts with fabrics too but store is small. Yep, that ceiling is still not repaired and it's dark in that section of the store as light fixture is broken. The 'third world refugee camp look' with its tacky falling down tarp askew on the ceiling is just odd looking as the months go on and on with no signs of any improvement. Heck, how about turning on a light over the third of the store that's in the dark? Yes, this store does not ooze friendliness and yes, even at 2:00 pm on a Monday, there is a line. And while there may be two cash registers, only one will have someone at it. The cashiers do their best. If the store can't afford to fix the ceiling, it makes sense that management can't hire more employees. If they weren't so short handed, maybe less stress attitude? But hey, you are there to get fabric and notions. Not make friends and have tea. Bring a flashlight for the dark areas of the store. Also, make sure your battery on phone is well charged. You gonna need it to play as you wait. And wait. No joke, at least ten minutes or more at cashier. Edit: They have fixed the ceiling and improved the lighting! read more

Went for the last time today. I didn't even need any kind of special assistance or fabric cutting, just found what I wanted and got in line. And waited. And waited. And waited. While the cashier spent a ridiculous amount of time ignoring us because she was helping a customer whose brand new bank account made it impossible for her to pay. She even rang up the customer's purchase for a SECOND TIME on a different register. (LIke that was going to make a difference, the register still didn't take her check.) Not once did the cashier acknowledge that she was making the rest of us wait. Just a word from her, like, "Thank you for your patience, sorry for the delay" would have made all the difference. I KNEW it wasn't her fault (except for the fact that she didn't know when to let it go and get the customer to go back to her bank and fix the problem.) Finally, after the customer left, the cashier still didn't say a word to us, she just stared at the receipt for a few seconds like she was trying to crack the DaVinci code. Then, after a cursory glance at us, she WALKED OUT OF THE STORE to share with the customer a word of advice about the account. NOT HER JOB. Her job is to help the next customer (me) with my purchase. Which I left on the counter before I walked out the door. I walked right past the cashier and her "project" customer and still, not a word from her. The thing that pissed me off the most was her attitude. I ran out of patience when I realized that she honestly did not care. Her attitude was basically, "Oh, they'll wait." I think the staff is just so used to annoying their clientele that they don't even notice anymore. read more

The manager and assistant manager are very rude. They do not want to help you solve problems with online orders. Had an order that should take 2 days and 5 days later I have to call them to find out they don't have all of my order and will need to wait an additional 5 days. I never received a phone call or email informing me. I had to call several days and talk to the managers. Both of which talked over me when I was explaining my frustrations. The assistant manager hung up on me. They do not think of their customers first. Every person I can in contact with was rude and disrespectful. As anyone who take a cursory glance at my reviews might notice, I recently picked up crocheting, and have been slowly working my way through local shops in an effort to find a good local place to get myself some yarn that is both on the cheaper end of things and decent quality. I recently heard from some mutual friends that Lily's Sugar and Cream is a good yarn for the kind of projects I want, and after looking them up on their site, I found that they weren't sold in a whole lot of places. After looking around on Yelp to find a suitable location (The Jo-Ann site's locater seems broken... It showed me every single location in the country when I searched my zip code), I headed out in the hopes of picking up some stitch markers and yarn. I've been to Jo-Ann's before, but I'm from the Midwest, where I have a wealth of higher quality fabric and yarn stores to choose from, and, I will confess, I am a bit of a snob when it comes to crafting supplies, so I avoided Jo-Ann's back home. My first impression of this location was pretty much colored by the fact that they were having a sale and the entire front of the store was a mix of fabrics in what seemed like a million colors. My companion realized that, left to my own devices, I would vanish into a haze of mid-quality, cheesy print fabrics and possibly never return. I was quickly hustled to the yarn area of the store. There is not a huge selection of yarn at Jo-Ann. While this might be obvious to some people - It is, after all, a fabrics store first and a crafts store second - It was a bit of a let down to me. They carry a few brands, and very basic types of yarn. (Lion Brand, Red Heart, Lily, Caron...) Since I came during a sale, there were some very good prices, and lots of pound-o-yarn at discount. The color range was definitely geared towards the afghan creating crowd, so it was tough to find the bright cheery colors that I was looking for, but I managed to find a buttery yellow and baby pink that would do in a pinch. I chose a few different skeins, a package of cheap stitch markers (I'm ordering the good Clover locking stitch markers online, where I can get them for cheaper), and a super cheap package of crochet hooks ranging in size. After adding some animal eyes and noses to my basket, I headed to the front to check out. The cashier was neither rude nor friendly, and certainly not what I would classify as helpful. However, in this case, it wasn't a huge deal to me - I had found my yarn and was game to GTFO. ;-) She scanned my purchases, bagged them up nice and neat, told me of no upcoming sales or promotions, and got me on my way. All in all, I spent $21 for six skeins of yarn, a package of six plastic crochet hooks, stitch markers, and notions for animal faces. The yarn is pretty basic cottony stuff, and that's fine - That's what the trip was about. If you're really serious about your yarn, don't bother making the trip to Jo-Ann. If you're like me and you just want to try a range of yarns at a decent price, this isn't a bad place to give that a go. Just don't expect organization in this store - The place is a huge mess. I don't feel as strongly about Jo-Ann's as I do about Knit + Stitch - I do intend to make trips back out if the yarn I found performs appropriately. But I don't ever think it will be my first choice. read more

I went into Joanns yesterday and the customer service I got was awful the ladies in the store are very rude. They speak to any kind of way and they was no where to be found when I need to check out. Once the lady came to check me out she told another lady in line u need to move back I'll get to u. She was rude and another lady came to get me some spray paint and she was like" wait color u want?" The manager is super rude!! I went for two pieces of fabric, not more than $20. When at the register, the cashier had made a mistake and she called the manager to fix the problem which I did not bother to ask what mistake she did. When the manager got there she was being rude to the cashier scolding her about her mistake. Manager told me she had to call corporate to open up the register to finish my transaction. I told them I will be right back since I was at the laundry mat next door so they had a chance to fix their issue. I had left my money and ticket for the fabric with them stating that I will be back. I came back 20 mins later, the cashier said "here's your money" and I asked where did my fabric go. She stated that the manager had taken my fabric and proceeded to call the manager back. When the manger got back she said she didn't have the fabric and went to go look for it and came back with one piece when originally the lady who cut my fabric said that she was going to give me a cut more than what I asked since it was the remnant piece. The manager told me she had no idea where the other piece went and never offered to cut another piece. She asked me how much fabric I got from the lady who cut it and I couldn't give her an exact measurement since it was the remnant piece. Anyways I proceeded to ask her about my fabric and kept arguing with me insisting on an exact measurement and I told her I only wanted the two pieces that's were already cut for me. She then insulted me asking me if I even had enough money to pay!! She even threatened me to never come back to the store!!! So rude and unprofessional. I spend literally thousands of dollars in crafts, fabric, and patterns each year - both for personal use and work. I run a drama program at a local high school, and it's typically cheaper for me to make costumes as opposed to buying them. Every time I go in this store, it's a different problem, but it all boils down to the fact that this store is run by possibly some of the most inept and rude people I've ever had the displeasure of meeting. As many people have stated, the cutting counter is a nightmare - anywhere from rude to extremely awkward to inability to measure appropriately (one girl insisted on measuring in French and then counted wrong - it's a good thing I speak French or else I would have been shorted at least a yard). Today was the last straw, though. Since I purchase items for a public school, when I use the school credit card, I have to use my tax exempt card. Unfortunately, Jo-Ann's seems to have the most useless system imaginable for it, because instead of looking for it by Tax ID number, they search by phone number - and apparently it's beyond their comprehension that a large school system might have multiple phone numbers. I've written down which one they have in the past, and then it changed (and it changes from store to store), so I can't keep track anymore. The woman at the register today took the time to let me know first that she wasn't "sure" that I'm a teacher (despite my faculty ID, school credit card, and Board of Education tax exempt card) and that I must be a pretty bad teacher if I didn't know the phone number that they use (even after I explained that I didn't know which number this particular store had on file). Furthermore, she didn't think that the pattern and fabric I was buying today was "really" for a school and when I explained that it was for our spring musical, she said that she was disappointed that her tax dollars were going to something so useless (for the record, it's not tax dollars - everything in my drama account was earned by the students through fundraisers, ticket sales, or donations - we do not get money from the county). It's interesting to me that someone who works for an arts and crafts store is so against the arts in schools. When I asked to speak to her manager, she scoffed and said, "Like I'm going to tell you who that is." I finally told her to forget it, and I'd go find the pattern and fabric I needed at Hancock Fabrics, and she said, "Well, good riddance. We don't want you here anyway. Don't forget to put this away from where you found it." My business will be going to Hancock Fabrics from now on. read more

Let me start by saying I stopped shopping at this Joann's and now I remember why. There's always an issue with the women cutting fabric or the ladies in the sewing machine section. The lady that is usually at the register (she seems to be there every time I've gone in) is absolutely amazing. I went in this day to get some fabric and apparently Joann's has a ticket system where you take a number and when your number is called you go up to the register to get your fabric cut. Because I haven't been there in so long, I forgot and was standing in line. The lady cutting fabric was helping a woman in front of me and made eye contact with me while I was standing there. She saw me standing there holding the fabric. I was standing there for about 2 minutes when another lady walks up and asks oh is the ticket machine stuck? The fabric cutting lady walks over and fixes the machine and hands the lady the ticket... all while I'm standing behind the lady she was servicing. I put the fabric back and went to the register to pay for the other items I was interested in. I don't know if it was my own stupidity that I was surprised at for even going back to this store or what. Safe to say I will not be shopping at this Joann's location unless it's absolutely necessary. read more

I try to put up with the rudeness of employees at Joann's because it is really the only store of its kind in the Gaithersburg area. However, today I think I made my last trip. After I was told I was not allowed to stand with my fabric bolts at the end of the cutting counter, I walked out. My number was going to be called next and I was holding 2 heavy bolts of duck cloth. There was only one employee cutting and 3 cutting stations. I was not in the way of the employee so why couldn't I stand at the far end of the counter when I was next in line?? Mentioned above is the same employee who once frowned at me when I told her my son plays sports and is not part of Boy Scouts...and the same employee who held up the check out line when she was in to purchase her own quilting items - after her purchase she had to then show her fellow employees her new quilting project - yes, we all got to see it as we were waiting for her to move on and free up the cashier. I will say that there is a wonderful blonde haired lady who is very friendly, helpful and engaging. When she is working the trip to Joann's is much less painful! read more

I am in line right now. I've been standing in line for over 10 minutes now by myself because the cashier lady and a customer are having a long ass conversation, totally disregarding the fact that I am right here. Customer service is terrible. Same with Hancock Fabrics. These fabric store employees are terrible. read more

This seems to be a smaller location compared to the Columbia location. The shelves always seem sparse and there isn't much home decor .
