Old school full service Chinese restaurant with a Korean twist. Please seems orderly but had an old musty smell. Jon Won looks like an old neighborhood favorite so decided to try. An older lady greeted me right away and sat me down. My experience was a bit quirky. She guessed what my ethnic background was and suggested House Special Home Made noodles, I agreed to try since she seem very excited about the home made noodles but she took the menu right away before I could even look at it. I looked at their Yelp profile to look for something less typical. Unfortunately, I would have much rather have something like the jajiang myun which you don't see everyday. I just ordered salt and pepper fried fish fillet to accompany my noodles. She was bragging at how good the salt and pepper fish was and that it was made fresh using halibut. Chow mein was unusually sweet and the shrimp was scarce and dry/shrunken. Noodles were clearly not home made. If they were, the noodles were older and overcooked. Almost mushy. The fish fillets were crispy fried but clearly not firm and sweet like halibut. It tasted like a much less expensive Swai fillets. The check total was for over $48. Which was a bit surprising for a diiner for 1 person. No rice, no soup just hot tea and water. I would have okay with the food except had expectations raised when she told me the noodles were hand/home made and the fish was halibut. She reminds me of a sweet Asian grandma so I politely left without complaint. read more

Me and my wife ordered jajangmyun(black bean noodles) and jjampong(spicy seafood noodle soup) Jajangmyun hit the spot - this is EXACTLY how it should taste - and this is the dish you should try here for authentic taste. This is one of the best places for jajangmyun, I really love their house made noodles and their kimchi pairs really well. Their kimchi is not the typical red, but a white style kimchi that pairs well with the flavors of the black bean sauce. Also their fried dumplings (mandoo) is really good I highly recommend this family owned and operated restaurant. Service could be hit or miss because it's just a sweet grandma running this place and her husband I believe as the cook. So if it's super busy I would say don't be afraid to ask or call her over but also be a little understanding. The lady who greeted us was very friendly and talkative, she can speak both Chinese and Korean. Jo Won is Korean Chinese cuisine, so the dishes are of Chinese origin, but with a Korean interpretation of it. My whole life I've always driven past it and knew of its existence, but haven't bothered trying it out until recently. Not so much by choice, but by chance. Anyway, I've had their jjampong (Spicy Seafood Noodle Soup) and mandu (Korean dumplings) a couple times for lunch thanks to my boss and coworker. While I've had more than plenty of Korean and Chinese cuisine (separately) in my life, I can't stay I've specifically had Korean-Chinese cuisine often, so perhaps you should take my review with a grain of salt. Speaking of salt, the jjampong is a bit bland. A pinch of salt would definitely help bring out the flavors of the soup more. Although, I discovered that once I gave the container a stir, the flavors came out more. The containers they use for take-out are pretty deep and they give A LOT of noodles. A LOT. The mandu here are huge!! They are also big grease sponges since they're fully deep fried. Like, I literally I took a bite and the juices are grease came oozing out the other end. Again, nothing crazy good about them, but they are big and crispy. Personally, Jo Won is not a place I would ever decide to eat at on my own. Even after looking over their photos and menu, nothing really interests me at all. However, they've been here FOREVER so I'm sure they're doing something right I suppose. We ordered the basics first - black bean noodles, Champong, and sweet and sour pork. The black bean noodles were delicious. The noodles had the perfect texture and had just the right portion of sauce to noodles. The Champong was definitely the star of the show. It came with plenty of noodles, seafood, and soup to really hit the spot. The sweet and sour pork was so tasty and came in a shareable portion. We were overall delighted with the food here. Wow, I'm so glad my group found this mom and pop shop. We had a large party of 9 and were seated immediately. The owner is trilingual, speaking English, Korean, and Cantonese fluently. They shared that they came from northern China, and their dishes have Chinese/Korean influences. I'm writing this review because we had a very strange experience here. But first: the food. It was fine. Traditional, old school Chinese restaurant fare. Good variety on the menu and items we haven't seen in years were listed. We picked black bean noodles with seafood and the beef with mushrooms. They were fine but nothing special. The black bean noodles with seafood were good but had virtually no seafood -- a few small pieces of squid tentacle and about 5 mini shrimp. Both dishes had plenty of cornstarch. A small bowl of rice to share was included but no tea. So, now for the weird part. We walked in and the friendly waitress greeted us. We said, "Two for lunch." She said, "We don't have lunch specials anymore. You have to order from the menu." Oh, okay. We had seen the lunch menu on Yelp but things have changed because of COVID. "Do you still want to stay?" she asked. Yes. We can order from the menu. We opened up the menu and we saw a piece of paper inserted that said because of increased costs, all the prices would be $2 more than listed. Okay. We can pay $2 more -- we know up front. So then we start to pick items from the menu. And then the waitress lets us know that it's even more than $2 added on. For example, we thought we'd try the mu shu pork because we hadn't had it in years. "Oh," she said. "That's $5 more, not $2." No matter what we picked, it wasn't $2 more -- it was a much bigger add-on. Was it because we weren't regulars? Because we weren't Chinese? Because she wanted a little extra money on the side? We went ahead and ordered. And she explained, "You know, most of our customers are regulars. They don't even look at the menu. They just tell us what they want and we make it." It's great if you have a business where people can come in and order what they want and get it and not care about the price. But that's not really what we were looking for at lunch on a work day -- and not what we wanted to pay for. And a $45 lunch for two? I would expect something a little more special than what we got. read more

I genuinely never post on here, but this restaurant and their sweet owners deserve all the stars :) We ordered the mandoo, jjamppong, and jjajangmyun. As others have said, the mandoo were amazing and are HUGE fried little footballs. The jjajangmyun was good as well, but the real star was the jjamppong. It was the perfect level of spicy and full of shrimp, squid, and other seafood. Food aside, the service was next level. An ahjussi greeted us as soon as we walked in while our server was the sweetest ahjumma. She provided us with her recommendations and was on top of it with pouring our tea and checking in on our table periodically. Since the dishes are served family style, she kindly cut up our noodles (absolutely necessary bc the noodles are looooong) and portioned them out for us. What really impressed me though, is that she took our leftovers and packaged them up for us at the end of our meal, which is pretty uncommon amongst small mom and pop shops like this. As a head's up, the actual prices are $5 more than what's listed on the menu. Understandable given the current rate of inflation. Even so, their dishes are still cheap/decently priced--$13 for the jjajangmyun and $15 for the jjamppong. We also had plenty of leftovers afterwards between the two of us. If you're looking for reasonably priced, delicious Korean/Northern Chinese food, then please give this place a try!! We tried Jo Won for the first time today. For Mom-in-law's birthday, she wanted egg foo young. And it's actually harder to find than expected. So we ordered fried rice, chow mein, egg foo young, orange chicken, szechuan eggplant, and potstickers. So much food! The portion sizes are huge!
