Cool bar, if that's what you're into still. Jive Turkey is a self-proclaimed dive bar not far off the northwest corner of Charleston and Maryland. Part of the revitalization of the Huntridge neighborhood, they've gained praise from Yelpers and critic-types alike since opening a little over a year ago. But it took me until a special one-night pop-up for me to check it out. I found parking in a nearby lot easily enough and made my way in. The pop-up was running from a window but instructed customers to pay for tickets at the bar, so my friend did that while I stood in line. We got our food pretty quickly after the wait in line, and we found a seat in another room that appears to be across a former outdoor hallway of sorts from the main bar. We did have drinks here. I focused on the Old Cuban ($14.00), their riff on a cocktail attributed to bartender and Wikipedia entry holder Audrey Saunders. The mango and lime was a nice accompaniment to what felt like some oak character from whatever aged rum they use here. It was an easy drinker but not too sweet. I also tried a little of the Birds Aren't Real ($14.00), which was also balanced since it didn't lean too heavily into the the bittersweet Cynar. I'd consider getting both drinks again, the Old Cuban more so. I didn't have any of their normal food items since their pop-up guest tonight is the guy who currently runs a very high-end French restaurant on the Strip. But just the fact that they hosted someone of his caliber (and his food was delicious and also affordable) gives good vibes, as does the fact that tonight's DJ's music was eclectic (Jungle Book, anyone?), and the volume varies in loudness enough throughout the bar that you can find some spots that aren't deafening. Still gotta speak up to hold a conversation though. Check out Jive Turkey if you want a cool, divey bar that's still welcoming and cares about their drinks and food. If I remember to hit up their happy hour (Mon-Fri 3pm-7pm), then I'll definitely come back to see more of what they have to offer. read more

One of my favorite bars to visit for well crafted drinks and delicious bar food. The bartenders here are fast and funny. Menu is quirky and hilarious. Can't beat this feeling. The highlight would be their interesting drink selection. They have signatures of course while also bringing new flavor options with a great pour. I also really enjoy their fun shot choices as well as the presidential beer they have which is a mixture of a shot and beer. I started the night with their amazing frozen Irish coffee--it instantly reminded me of a spot I love in New Orleans--and then dove into a few more creative cocktails (seriously, who doesn't love drinks served in beakers?). I ended up meeting new friends who were just as into music as I am. We spent the night hanging out, laughing, and spinning vinyl--it's the perfect mix of chill and energy. This is definitely my fave new spot! Our bartender was Gene, who was super friendly and gave great recommendations. Behind the construction on Maryland just north of Charleston lies a bar most people wouldn't give a second glance. But you should. Jive Turkey is a gem. The bartenders have amazing energy which they pour into their amazing and creative drink. The menu itself is a work of art that will make you laugh as you read it. Be sure to pay attention to the Mayhem section where you can order 5 minutes in the walk-in to cry, or get your polaroid on the wall permanently. Taylor was our fantastic bartender mixing drinks such as Birds Aren't Real, Sherry Cobbler, and more. We tried the Short Rib Sando based on the reviews and were not disappointed. If I had any complaint at all, it would be that there wasn't more of it because I wanted another bite. The two long rooms, one with couches and high tops, the other a few tables and a dart board, are separated by an outdoor picnic style area. There is a parking lot in back of the bar off 11th and bonneville with an entrance into the picnic area so don't let the torn up street and sidewalk in front keep you from enjoying this place. You might even here a few jokes from the bartender. I work nearby and this might become a friday night happy hour spot. read more

An absolute gem!! Sam, Adam, Bruce and the entire staff are so friendly and awesome. This place has quickly became my go-to bar for a fun, laid-back night out. This vibe is chill yet inviting. Drinks are unique and sooo good! "World's best espresso martini" and they're not lying. Definitely recommend trying Infante. The bartenders have also made random spins on drinks, never had one I disliked. I have a strong love for the short rib sando, it's all I ever get with the side of fried green beans. Quite literally the best new bar to come to this part of town in a while! First of all, this space needed a cool spot for a long time. It's across Charleston from Yukon Pizza and next to the old 99c store. You can park in that lot. The ambiance is cool and modern with a nod to vintage vegas. Cut outs, coasters and pillows of our local celebrity Nicholas Cage found throughout. The coolest part is the dual rooms with a beautiful breezeway in between. The food is great, the beer selection is fantastic and they do have some gaming at the bar and pool/darts. The bartenders are really nice and I really felt that they were giving good vibes and proper attention even when they got busy. The attention to detail is the best part, and so appreciated. This may be my new favorite spot. I can't believe I have never been here. Jive Turkey is a true hidden gem in the Huntridge area. We walked in and were immediately greeted so warmly. Everyone that worked there was so incredibly nice. We ordered drinks and food both of which came out quickly and were delicious. I've been taking a break from alcohol and they have some great mocktail options. Wednesdays are burger day in our house and the smash burger was top notch. Amazing spot. Heard about this from a few friends and decided to check it out. The selections sounded so good, but I ended up with the Chicken sandwich--crispy fried chicken with mayo and pickles. Potato bun was a nice touch. The fries were also pretty flavorful. Shout out to the attentive staff for giving out some great recommendations! For cocktails, I opted for the Maximillian Affair (mezcal cocktail) and the Don Fulano Fuerte Paloma. Both were so good and refreshing, but the Maximillian included some nice complementary flavors. I'll have to return to check out their other food options and cocktails. All of these items were brought out in a reasonable amount of time and I thought the prices were also not at all pricey. The place has more of a dive bar atmosphere but with some fun 70s decor and amazing use of colors. I'd honestly be down to return to try additional drinks and more food options since I was pleasantly surprised with all that I ordered. The staff was great and the vibe is what I loved too. I walked into Jive Turkey without expectations and left wondering why nobody warned me the cocktails would be this good......For the record, I didn't forget the name of my drink because I was drunk; I intentionally surrendered decision making to the bartender. I prefer to judge the architecture of a cocktail rather than agonize over the menu ....and truthfully, I'd rather outsource my choices when alcohol is involved. I simply said, "Make me whatever you want," and what arrived was beautifully constructed, well proportioned, and quietly confident. The kind of drink that suggests someone behind the bar actually understands balance, texture, and restraint. I wasn't planning on eating, but the Depression Dog caught my eye like a small culinary dare. A Chicago-style hot dog stripped down to its essentials: no tomato, no celery salt, just a Vienna all-beef dog presented without pretense. Simple, direct, and delicious. The crinkle fries weren't for me, though I acknowledge the world contains people who prefer them. We coexist. It's fine..... and no points off......it's a preference not a kitchen crime. Several trusted confidants told me Jive Turkey was the new spot "east-ish" of downtown. The neighborhood is in that liminal stage where revitalization coexists with eccentricity. You may encounter locals assembling near the laundromat like a chorus of urban sages...... or perhaps NPC's in this crazy simulation we perhaps live in......Word of advice: avoid eye contact unless you're prepared for an unexpected philosophical exchange. Inside, the place presents a charming duality: 1970s dive bar DNA interwoven with a polished, almost self-aware modern sensibility. I went early, when the bar was quiet and contemplative--my preferred state, possibly because I am now old enough to appreciate hearing myself think. I didn't explore every section of the space, which leaves a certain narrative tension unresolved. A reason to return, as any good critic would say...... In finality: a legitimately great spot. Do yourself a favor and let the bartenders make your drinks. Tell them the spirits you like ....or don't, in my case, as I drink everything--and trust them. It's a competent, confident bar staff, and I intend to return soon to continue my study of their concoctions. The food was good, mainly finger foods and drinks. I had one of the homemade hot pockets which were really good. We also had wings which were good and saucy the way we liked them. The ambience was very chill, and the seating was mainly bar area from what I recall. All in all it was a great atmosphere and place to grab a snack. Man talk about a hidden gem! From the minute I entered from the back I was enchanted. The layout alone made me smile. They had a cute courtyard with misters in the middle of the bar with two different areas you could occupy. The theming of the bar is fantastic; 70's with a little splash of oddballery. Lots of hidden Nick Cage's, a photo wall, rad atmospheric lighting and comfortable furniture. The cocktails are probably the best per price I've had lately. $14 for something unique and delish, count me in. The bartenders were great, personable, attentive and just down right cool. The Arts District bars are cool and all but man it's such a pain to try to find parking or find a tasty/ affordable beverage or a bartender that isn't swamped. Had a little gathering here with a few co-workers and we had a great time. The place is really nice and welcoming. Sam and everyone else in the venue are always so great. They have the 2 sides. One is where the bar is, with some gambling machines and a few couches, and the other side has a few tables with a pool table and a couple games you can play. Cocktails are - AMAZING! I had a classic daquiri - always on point Food - SOO GOOD We ordered - Hot dogs Chicken nuggets with all the sauces Fries Chips and dip Short rib sandwich I love me some chicken nuggets with honey mustard ( We were all hungry that I didn't take pictures..lol..but I will next time I go) The whole group had a great time. We have been hearing good things about this place so we figured we'd give it a try; we were hungry and right down the street. The location is interesting with lots of construction and not the best area, but parking is close. It was a chilly and windy night, so we didn't stay outside for long but had to get a couple pics bc the layout was pretty neat. Once you get into the bar area the design is nice, very chill vibe, laid back. It wasn't super busy when we first got there so we got a seat right at the bar. They greeted us and gave us menus right away and asked us if we wanted water to start. The drinks take a little bit to get because they make them all from scratch and they all come in different style glasses to fit the style of drink which is cute. I got Satans whiskers (7/10) which is a gin martini with grand marnier and orange. It was really good! My husband got a shot of say my name (9/10) which was espresso and mint. He said it tasted like a peppermint patty and it was delicious. We came to eat so we ordered quite a bit as we had to try a few different things. We got the disco style fries (8/10) the braised beef was so tender and juicy and flavorful, and the portion size was huge! Chicky Nuggies (9/10) made from scratch in house, reminded me of chick fil a nugs, which are my top 3! House made ranch and garlic Parmesan sauce (10/10) both tasted so freaking good!! My husband got a pizza puff (8/10) a grown man's hot pocket - it was very tasty, I just wish the crust was more of a flaky croissant style and it would have been perfection Cheese burger (9/10) smash burger with pickles and grilled onions was so juicy and buttery, it was delicious! Mom's homemade brownies - (9/10) so gooey and warm, large serving size and it was really rich but had to save some for later! I had to try the world's best espresso martini (6/10) while it was tasty, it wasn't the best one I've had in town. It was just ok. It didn't make me want another one. I wish I would've gotten what my husband did lol. My husband got a drink called "over 21" (10/10) which was Rye and amaretto mixed with YooHoo and cream and omg it was the best yoohoo I've ever had!!! And of course we HAD to do the Polaroid picture to put on the wall! That was so cool and totally worth it! But the real star is the smash burger--WOW! The perfectly seasoned, and cooked to perfection. Their craft cocktails are creative and delicious and the vibe of this place is on point! They have a few gaming machines (it is Vegas) and also kind of a game room with a pool table, darts and a stage when they have live music on occasion. Excellent bartender, Brawler, (Tina), at the nearby Huntridge Tavern provides great service and will be surprised about this review especially since she recommended the "Turkey" earlier in the day. About the Turkey. Lorri and I were curious and sat down on one of two picnic table in view of the bar 20 feet away. We were noticed by the chef, bartender and a server. I said NOTICED because we were also ignored by all the above. No signage was present directing customers to order food or drink at the bar. I was taught the customer should be acknowledged upon arrival. I advise Turkey ownership to start caring about proper service before another " trendy cool dive", is short lived and replaced by another short lived tattoo parlor. I came here for the United States bartenders guild Christmas party, and my experience was phenomenal. Obviously I had a different experience than the average person, but the food and drinks alone left me aching to come back and try more. The bartenders were fantastic and quick, the drinks were delicious, and the bar area itself is a great mix of indoor and outdoor. The best part of my experience was definitely the burger- it was probably one of the best I've ever had! I had one while sober and one after drinking, and both were equally tantalizing and delicious!
