My wife took me to Jim's today for my birthday lunch. We got mongolian chicken, kung pao shrimp and walnut shrimp with chow mein. GREAT WAITSTAFF. The woman was very nice and very thorough in cleaning our table and the young man was fantastic. We got our food and the chow mein was very very good and unusual! (in a good way!) The walnut shrimp was among the best we've had and the other dishes were terrific, super hot (temperature)... just a really really great experience! We'll be back for sure as we live close, we'd been meaning to go for a long time and now we did! some women near us got a sandwich with shrimp and avocado and it was absolutely beautiful to look at! I was lured in by the banner reading "Dim Sum, 10:30 am - 3:00 pm, Sat & Sun." Having to go to South San Jose for the nearest dim sum once a month, I was excited to see food culture arrive in Prune-tucky! While the diversity of items could never rival a dim sum palace like Grand Fortune, it was a respectable offering of the old classics. What made this special is that it was so obviously house made. Sometimes the thickness of the noodles varied showing that it wasn't a Costco special, but rather made to order. The siu mai was some of the best I've ever eaten. The shrimp rice noodle could have used a bit more filling, but overall, everything was fresh and delicious. And, in true Prunedale style, by the time we'd finished eating, everyone at the five filled tables were chatting with each other about dim sum. Fun! read more

BEST HAMBURGER EVER! We are Chinese and we love to eat. But when we heard our neighbor mentioned how good their burger is, we were skeptical. Who would order a burger in a Chinese restaurant? Anyway, we tried it, and we were blown away by the flavor and how juicy the burger was. We came away agreed that Jim's made the best burger we have ever eaten. We recommended a few more people to try their burger and they also think these are the best burger they have ever had. French Fries were too thin to impress. So give it a try, I think you will be pleasantly surprised! They have dim sun on Sunday I think. There is a complete menu for Chinese cuisine , but I recommend that you go for western food, in particular hamburger. read more

I've been here 3 times in the past year. Apparently, from reading older reviews, I missed out on their hey-day. The food is pretty good. I love the fried won-ton type chips with the sweet-hot dipping sauce they bring out every time. The noodle bowls are pretty good. Place was crawling with ants. Lady was incompetent about the menu and couldn't answer what kind of cheese they had on the burger. Her answer, "uhh, yellow". This is another hard to rate restaurant. You need to find your favorite dishes and stick with them. We've found the menu to be uneven. We haven't tried any of the American dishes, just the Chinese dishes. Some of them are misses - the lemon fish dish is neon yellow and way too sweet, the lettuce cups are odd. But we go regularly for our favorites: the seared ahi over Kim chi, the fried rice and the sizzling rice soup. These dishes earn the four stars by themselves. The chow mein is good as well. The woman who runs the restaurant is very nice, but the service is slow. Always. If you go during peak times, bring a book and a good attitude. She offers multi course meals once a month or so. We haven't been able to attend any yet, but I've heard positive things about them. There is a small outdoor seating area that allows dogs. read more

Kind of a weird restaurant. They serve Chinese food, but they also have some fine dining American dishes on the menu. I usually get one of the American dishes. It is good gourmet food in Prunedale. Jim's is in a wonderful location if you want to meet with friends driving on 101. Easy and quick access from the highway. More importantly, the food is good and the staff helpful. We had three groups meeting: some driving from San Francisco to Santa Barbara, some coming from Santa Cruz and others from Carmel. It was perfect. The outside lunch space suited us and I had the Mongolian lamb, it was good and so were the lemon grass ginger pork steak and the pine nut chicken and all the other dishes we consumed during more than 3 hours, a real banquet. The chef has a lot of experience, the price very reasonable and an excellent experience enjoyed by our party of 9 gourmets , many familiar with the fare of Paris, London , San Francisco, Berkeley and the Monterey Peninsula . I hate to write a bad review about a local restaurant but... It was Saturday night and I called in my order and told it would be an hour. When I get there they are packed and haven't even started my order. The place is a mess. There are two 6' tall stacks of random boxes on the customer side of the counter that no one can get past. Behind the counter is an utter, cluttered mess as is the countertop. Worst of all while I was standing there waiting for 15 minutes for them to cook the food I saw the woman in charge take a tall glass from the dirty dishes that had just been brought back and give it a QUICK rinse under the faucet. (And I mean QUICK! There was no waiting for anything resembling hot water nor the use of soap or a sponge or anything. Just a quickie.) She then filled it with ice tea for the next poor sap. I liked this place up until now as the food is really good (and I don't know about the reviewer below complaining about no meat in her hot/sour soup. I have never had nor expected meat in my hot/sour soup as it's what we always order as my partner's vegetarian). But the general disarray of the place and having witnessed what passes as dishwashing has put me off for good. Clean up your act, Jim's. read more

I cannot tell you just how amazing of a find this place is. I mean, we don't really expect truly great food in good 'ol Prunedale. Really. The nickname for the "town" is Prune-tucky for pete's sake. Anyway, you really can't go wrong with the food here. My favorite is the "prawns and penne pasta" which is a very sedate name for a luscious dish. When we want a carb load that is oh so good, we head out for that one. I had lunch for the first time today with a friend, and a regular suggested the Black Angus hamburger. OMG!!!! I have not had a burger that good in ages. The chef/owner Steven even makes the buns fresh. Unbelievable. Then there's the Chinese food. Get risky. Order anything. It's bound to be awesome. Many of the Western dishes could be found at a 5 star restaurant. I don't know how they jump from french fries and a burger to rack of lamb over beautiful potatoes.... but they do. If you ever need to stop off in Prunedale, which you might want to if you're down that way because the cheapest gas around is at the station there on the West side of the highway...anyway jump into Jim's. You won't regret it. It's right where the Burger King is, and a 100 times better. read more

So very good, fresh and welcoming. I love their soups in particular. They make a variety of cuisines, not just Chinese. The chef and his wife are very humble and genuine and take what they do with a good deal of pride. Fair price for the quality, too. Fresh ingredients all around everyday - all day. Love this place! We arrived at 5 pm on a Thursday, but we didn't want Chinese food, so I can't speak to that. All we wanted was a big, juicy burger that wasn't McDonalds or Burger King, and Jim's was recommended to us as the place to get one. And how! We each had a black angus 8 oz. burger, and it was delicious. The meat was perfectly seasoned, and it was served on a toasted herb bun which held up really well against all the juices and condiments. It was served with lettuce, tomato, onion and pickle. It comes with fries or salad, and of course, we chose fries. If you get iced tea, they leave the pitcher at your table so you can refill as much as you want. It would be great if they made milkshakes too. We were too full for dessert, or I'd have tried the chocolate mousse cake. Overall, the place looked very clean, tables wiped, menus wiped, but they need to give a good scrubbing to those plastic things at the side of the table that advertise their 5-course meal on the last Sunday of every month. read more

Went to the Pre Fix dinner tonight (Last Sunday of each month). A great Seven course dinner. The only problem I forgot my phone, so no food porn pictures. Ever had caviar on top of a melon with chocolate drizzle around it, well that was on the menu. It was great. The main course was three separate items, a salmon(very moist, roast beef (very tender) and pork slice of I do not what it was, but it tasted great. OK, this place was *fabulous*! Was here for a friends bday, and we celebrated on a winemakers dinner night. What a great evening! My friend was running late... damn Red Barn traffic, so I went in to see how timely they start. They were so welcoming and accommodating... even told me a short cut so friend cut out at LEAST 30 minutes of traffic and wasn't even late. The featured wine was Hahn, and they started pouring a Rose all most as soon as you walked in the door. First course was a Salmon Confit Roasted fennel tart..... this was out of this world yummy!!! honestly. I could of eaten about 4 of these and been set for the night. But, one apiece then onto next course which was a tomato basil salad, tomato sorbet, and a cheese bread stick. also very yummy, ...AND grown by Gordon the host! The second course was served with a Tolosa Chardonnay. Then came an Intermezzo with a Grape Granite.... ohhhh man was this delish!! tiny little red grapes and sugar at the bottom and sorbet on top... you'd normally think these little grapes to be sour but these were sweet as could be. So onto the main course. now pouring the Hahn Merlot, and it was actually pretty good! I had the Olive oil infused chicken and grilled prawns over eggplant puree and crispy potato pancake. It was wonderful! Friend had the veal cutlet with poached artichoke in truffle oil with whipped creamy potatoes in Madeira sauce. I don't eat beef, but judging by the sounds that escaped her mouth every now and again, i was almost tempted to try it! Shame on me! They also offered a veal cutlet which I hear was wonderful. I actually ended up having a bite of this and it was wonderful! it pays to sit next to the host! ;) The dessert was a combo... restaurant had a strawberry creme brulee tart with vanilla ice cream. My birthday friend had a German chocolate cake. Ohhhh man... not even a fan of german chocolate cake, but damn if i didn't eat ALL that chocolate frosting. Wish I would have followed my instinct and left once I looked at this crazy making menu. No way in the world the food can be fresh when they have a zillion choices. Close to closing time, no other choice than Burger King, we decided to take a risk. Outside dirty, inside dirty, afraid to see kitchen, scary. Waited 15 minutes for water and nobody else in restaurant, not a good sign. Tablecloth had food stains all over it, looked like it hadn't been changed for many moons. The lengthy, very confusing, menu was wet and sticky, not sure what that was about. I don't think the server understood one word of English, but continued to nod as if she did, we pointed and tried to make sure she knew what we wanted, good luck with that. The chow mein was disgusting, it was sooooo salty I had to spit it out, I imagine nobody in the kitchen is tasting the food. The chicken and broccoli was not quite as salty, but sitting in a brown sauce of some sort, questionable. We nibbled on brocoli, chicken looked suspicious, so didn't touch that. We didn't want to return the food since it was now past 9 and they were getting ready to close. We took everything back to our airbnb rental house, rinsed everything off to remove salt, put in saucepan, still very salty, ended up tossing out all the food. They were nice enough people, just out of touch with reality. Clean this place up, get rid of those filthy tablecloths, cleanup outside and inside, dry off menus, etc... How can any restaurant have so many selections and do a decent job? The glass of chardonnay was delicious! The chinese is no less greasy than any fast food chinese. The beef was tender in the brocolli beef but was completely overpowered by garlic flavor. The chowmein didn't have hardly any flavor at all except salty and fried. The decor was nice inside but still conveyed a sense of divey. The sugar, chili, salt, pepper, ect on the table was nasty with grime. Music was nice but a little loud. Overpriced! My husband's $16 Italian dish was gag worthy. read more

Upon trying Jim's the first time, we were very impressed - so much that we took family and friends there multiple times and it was all great. Then one of the friends we told to go eat there, told us it was awful. We couldn't hard believe it but sure enough the next time we went there, it was not the same. It was not even like the same place. Maybe the regular chef was gone?? We gave it a few more chances, but unfortunately it did not return to the original Jim's we came to love when we first started dining there. It's too expensive to eat out and not enjoy it so we won't be giving it another chance. Sorry Jim's! Was also disappointed in some miscommunication with service. read more

Most people don't get to excited when I tell them about a fine dining experience in Prunedale. They just kind of look at me like I am crazy. But once I drag them out there they are hooked and I mean hooked hard. How many places in this area can you go for an awesome brunch like Brioche French Toast, or 3, yes 3 different kinds of Eggs benedict, followed by what might be the only Dim Sum in the area. Plus don't even get me started on the once a month wine dinners, they are fantastic and if you have ever wanted to try a 5 course gourmet dinner with out having to pawn off your first born, then this is the place. They do not understand what it is to make a" reservation". So its Valentine Days' and I had made reservations. I called and my husband even went personal ( while ordering food) to make sure we had our table for the time we had picked. These say " yes" "OK" Yes and when we went they were full and our table was taken. So I call this, unprofessional, not customer service, not understanding the language of English. Never again and I will go better to Monterey and have a better dinner. Poor, Poor, never again. Its best to drive a little and have better customer service. I can smile too!!! read more
