I don't get all the great reviews here. First, they are overpriced for what you get and I do not believe the food is fresh. I was looking to get a lobster roll somewhere and all they had is a cold lobster salad roll for $19. Something I can get for $5 less at hitching post. not even worth trying. Warm with butter should at least be an option at a seafood place. A cup of lobster bisque is $9. 6 shrimp is $14. It comes with coleslaw and fries but I do not usually eat fries. I asked for more coleslaw instead and still only got one serving for the same price. They have not updated their website and as a result are advertising cheaper prices so you get there and it is more than you thought. I like the atmosphere and the service was good but that's it. I should have just went across the way to the other seafood places. I ordered the crab cakes and fried shrimp with coleslaw. The $9 crab cakes were fishy and fresh crab cakes are NOT fishy. I also dislike fish so I was not pleased. The coleslaw was fine, shrimp was flattened and fried to a very hard crisp. Both of my seafood items remind me of something from the freezer section. I left very annoyed that I spent $30 here. I was in and out in 30 minutes. The food is served on cheap plastic plates with plastic utensils. Do not pass Matunuck Oyster Bar for this place. That is where I should have went. The difference in the food is night and day. Also, when i got there I walked up the ramp and wandered around before figuring out where to go. Now common sense dictates that the winding ramp that ends right in front of the building would be the entrance. Not so. It is outside to the left of the ramp and there is no sign to tell you not to enter the ramp. The girl said they just opened for the season and are working out the kinks. huh? This is not a new business people. They have had many many seasons before. Parking here is a clusterf**k and I saw many cars double parked. Normally very good food, and my guest's was, but the calamari with sweet chili oil appetizer wasn't great (several large clumps of internally uncooked batter and squid) and the large portion of crispy flounder (overcooked and SO crunchy, my gums hurt). I get that restaurants are having a tough time with staff, post-pandemic, and I will certainly go there again, I just wish their cooks/chef paid a little more attention. If you published an email, I would have sent this privately, just so you would know the problem and could fix it, without public display, again because your food is usually very good. Please address this and please post when you will be open in front of the restaurant and online-and keep your word. We have tried calling and coming a few times only to find you are closed. read more

Decided to take my husband out for a birthday lunch , not much for parking and during covid 19 outside dining only. we rode our bikes so parking for us was easy. i had the grilled scallops which came with rice and roasted vegetables. couldn't have been happier with my choice . my husband got the whole belly clams , at the time of ordering the market price was 24.99. per the waitress . the whole belly clams were over cooked and like rubber bands , they came with fries and slaw. which he stated the slaw was dry ,. we finished our meal . the waitress came over to us and apologized that she gave the wrong price for the whole bellys and it was 27.99 not 24.99. we asked if they would honor the price she gave us before indulging in our meals and even laughed saying , if not , take them back. but she apologized again and said no. but due to covid 19. we understand and paid the increase and still gave a 20% tip , kudos to us . i'm giving a four star based on my scallops. if it was for whole belly clams. it would have been one star read more

I mean, it's a tourist trap, but the views and decor are great and the food is very decent. The lunch menu is just about $10 for everything so not very overpriced either unless you opt for the specials which are in the $20-25 range with smallish portions. On my most recent trip I got the fish and chips which was delicious, and the crab cakes which they slipped me a side of maple syrup for! Delish! I've had the tuna here too, which is a catch. Went on Saturday night .brought a bottle of wine , service was and scenery was amazing !! Veteran server , took great care of us even suggested her homemade pie for dessert ! Honestly wow, so amazing. Came here for breakfast and it was alright but came back a few days later for dinner and I'm blown away. BYOB - fine. After a few dozen oysters, clam cakes, and coconut shrimp I was in heaven. Straight from the ocean and they were so amazing. Been here several time through the years. Stayed within walking distance a few yrs ago and ate multiple meals there. Went on Sunday after we arrived. Calamari over cooked, and crab cakes were horrible. $8.00 for 2 bottles of iced tea... Not enough umbrellas on deck. Paper plates so everything is flying allow over! Bathroom is filthy. 2021 has been kind to Jim's Dock. All the reviews are 5 star. I guess I shouldn't be surprised that all our entrees were delicious. The magi mahi tacos were loaded with fish and guac and loads of flavor. I had the mango sword fish and it was loaded with a fresh mango salsa on a large slab of perfectly grilled swordfish. Best I have ever had. All meals were fresh and healthy. Stopped by another time and got the crab cakes. Perfectly cooked and a nice mix of clams. Hope to visit a few more times this summer. read more

The setting is nice. The raw oysters are good. How can they be screwed up? The BYOB is good. The fried clams? Heavy breading and cooked to rubbery disappointment. The mussels in white wine? Hard to tell since only about 60% of the mussels opened. But we paid for 100%. The "Freedom Fries"? Not bad, but c'mon, it's not 2002, get over it and call them French Fries again. If there is another visit (and there might be because of the setting and the BYOB), we all agreed it will be oysters and burgers. Oh, I forgot. The chowder is okay. Don't expect to have any clams in it, but the flavor was okay. read more

We stayed for a week in a little apartment on the water just a few yards away from Jim's Dock, which our realtor encouraged us to try. We ate there (wife & I and two teenage kids) 4 or 5 times in the course of the week, breakfast, lunch, and dinner. We were very happy with everything that we ate there -- it was significantly better than the food we had at the more expensive Cap'n Jack's down Succotash Road. Staff was universally friendly and helpful (especially when we did bring the dog to have dinner with us). If we're ever in the area again, we'll definitely stop back for a cup of their clear chowder. My only complaint is that my daughter came home from Rhode Island with a taste for lobster. read more

Great place to laze around with friends and enjoy some excellent seafood. Because it will take awhile before you get your food, you might as well BYOB and just lounge around on the patio with the sun. Plenty of seating outdoors and indoors as well, with some interesting things hanging from the walls. You can tell this place is about as authentic as RI seafood gets because of what's hanging on the walls. That and the food is really, really fresh, since it comes from the fishermen doing their work 20 feet away. Clam cakes are good, mussels were fantastic, fish & chips spot on. I went here on a Saturday afternoon with a friend, and sat out on the deck by the marina. I didn't see inside so I can't comment there. Service was OK, but I really didn't expect much. But I ordered the fried Maryland belly clams and my friend ordered fried scallops and I can say it was one of the best seafood meals I have eaten. The clams were lightly breaded and were very fresh. The scallops barely had any breading and were incredible. Best part about it is you can bring your own drinks. I would rate the food as a 5, but a few minor things such as service brought it down to a 4 overall. I would eat here again next time I am in the area!!!! As for the parking - I pulled into a spot and didn't pull all the way forward since I didn't want to get blocked in. Additional parking would be nice. CASH ONLY!! read more

update -- Disappointed last time visiting. It was end of season, so I expected limited menu options, but the staff had already checked out. The hosts only acknowledged us to tell us where we couldn't park ( couldn't use handicapped parking because it was roped off !). Service was uninspired, and food selection was worse than I imagined with apparently only what came out of the freezer. Why stay open if you don't want to be there ? I love Jim';s dock, it's the real deal in terms of a R.I. seafood place/clam shack. The deck is the place to be in the summer. Great clam clakes and the lobster bisque is as good as it's gets. This place is also very dog friendly and best of all, they do not have a liquor license so they are good with BYOB. This year (2011) they also take credit cards! read more

My mom lives near this place, and we go at least once a summer. Over the past few years the menu has gotten better (salads!), but at heart it's a fish-and-chips place with a killer view of Point Judith/Galilee and the Block Island ferries. They also have docks and a small beach where the kids can play, and a lobster tank with some small sharks swimming around, which kept my kids fascinated for a long time. This year I had a blackened Mahi sandwich. I enjoyed it, but the Mahi was not noticeably blackened. The fries are generic seasoned fries. I like their coleslaw, and I ate my son's leftover fish and chips, which was fine if nothing special. The service was fine, but again nothing to write home about. Take note that they only accept cash, do not make reservations, don't serve alcohol (BYOB) and permit/require double parking in the lot (leave your cell number on the dash). If my mom didn't live nearby I wouldn't ever eat here, but once a summer it's a lot of fun and an OK meal with a great view. A note about how I rate: It seems to me that people mean very different things by the stars they give in a review. Here's what I mean: 5 stars means that a place is exceptional in some way, special even among very good peers; 4 stars means that the place is very good in every relevant category but not outstanding or exceptional; 3 stars means adequate--a place I would go to again but not great; 2 stars means unacceptable--a place I would not go again because it is seriously deficient in some way; 1 star is horrible, that the place was not only unacceptable in some way but that it was exceptionally, unforgivably bad. In every case my rating is comparing the place reviewed to similar places-- thus an outstanding diner gets a 5 even though on an absolute scale its food might not be as good as that at a gourmet restaurant. read more

Nice little place to grab some food by the water. I went by boat, they don't have dedicated docking for customers but they can cater to open spots while empty. I had a lobster roll which was good but there was almost to much bun and a little dry. Fries were very good. BYOB so we brought our cooler right off the boat to the deck. I'm giving this place a 1 star based on our overall experience, not necessarily the food. The food was decent. We arrived at Jim's Dock at 6:30 on a weekend, which is prime time, and we expected to wait for a table. Finding a parking space is nearly impossible, so get there early. Upon arriving, we (party of 2) were told it would be about a 1/2 hour wait for a table. No biggie. We took our 6 pack of Corona (BYOB) and sat down on the upper deck to enjoy the view of the marina. After about an hour and 4 Coronas later, we asked if they skipped us, since we've seen several large parties wait, then get seated, eat and leave. Nope, we were still in line behind 2 other couples. Ugh. After another 45 minutes, I asked again and was told we were behind one other couple. When I asked for an approximate wait time because "we were told 1/2 hour wait and that was 1 hour and 45 minutes ago!" I was told by the manager that the wait time would be the time it took for a couple to finish and leave their table. Yeah, thanks Einstein! Well, 2 hours later, just as the sun completely set, leaving us in the dark, we were seated. And the hostess was all excited and informed us that "we got you a BIG table!" as if that was going to make up for our 2 hour wait! So now we ate our lobsters in the dark, while the mosquitoes enjoyed snacking on us! My wife was bitten probably 30 times! Then as we left, I noticed the inside tables were completely empty. The hostess told us to have a good night. I said, "I wish you would have mentioned that you had inside seats available, so we could actually SEE our meal and not get eaten alive by mosquitoes." Her reply, "We have bugspray." and "It's not the tables that are a problem, the *kitchen* was backed up." Um, sorry sweetie, but if it was the KITCHEN that was the issue, we wouldn't have sat for 2 hours while every other party of 4+ were seated, ate and left. And to top it all off, people go there, eat, then STAY AT THEIR TABLES for an hour or more to enjoy the sunset, while other people are waiting for a table. Jim's needs to put a time limit on tables to avoid this situation. You order, you relax, you eat and when you're done, you LEAVE and let someone else enjoy the experience. Needless to say, I will NEVER be back. (And who serves french fries with steamed lobster?) read more

I guess you can't give more than one star if you don't even get to eat there. We have been to Jim's Dock dozens of times over the years, and truthfully, you learn not expect much. The food is okay, not great, and greatly overpriced, but the location makes up for it, so we go. They may or may not be open before or after peak season, or they may be closed for a private event when you get there, but that is the chance you take. This time however, was really the worst. It was 6:30 on a Sunday night in mid-June. We were very fortunate in that we found an open parking spot, and I took that as a good omen. That was short-lived though, because the list of "what we're out of" on the front of the hostess stand included about half of the menu and was growing longer. The hostess told us that it would probably be about an hour-and-a-half wait, but on the bright side maybe only an hour because many waiting patrons give up and leave. It was going to be an hour-and-a-half wait even though half the tables on the deck were empty. The restaurant itself was also empty because they weren't seating inside that night. Jim's is BYOB so she suggested we could pass the time by going to a liquor store and getting something to bring back. It was a good thing we didn't take her advice, because local liquor stores are not open after 6:00 on a Sunday. About that time a waitress joined the hostess and told us that if we did come back, they might not even be open. Well that pretty much sealed the deal. They have dozens of people flocking there to give them business and they have to turn them away because they basically can't run a restaurant. I would recommend that everyone spend their hard-earned money at a place that at least makes an effort to be a serious business. Update: Failing to heed my warning, a family member and a friend went there about a month later. They ordered clamcakes and the crunchy flounder. The clamcakes came out pretty light in color, not the usual golden brown, but edible. Then the waitress came back with the bad news: they had run out of gas and could not cook anything, so unless someone wanted the chowder, there was nothing else to serve. So chowder it was. Other diners did not take it so well. Glad they got the full Jim's Dock experience and paid full price for it. read more

I have been going to this place for years and the only reason why is because it is quick and easy. You can order takeout after a nice day at the beach or you can sit down. Most of the sea food is fried and lacks flavor, but the food is usually decent. They also have simple things like burgers and salads if sea food isn't your thing. This was pretty much the worst restaurant experience we have ever had! And I'm so sorry to say that because Jim's Dock was a special place with my family and we were so excited to be there. (One star for the memories) First of all we were told the wait would be 30 mins. An hour later we were told we were next but that never happened and then it was 1 1/2 hrs! The hostess came and announced "Jen party of four" and the people next to us who came in well after us said "we don't have a Jen but we're a party of four" and the hostess said "oh, well come with me then " and she seated them! This place is so poorly managed and it's too bad because it could be such a treasure. At that point we were so hungry but had been treated so badly that we went to leave but couldn't because we were blocked in! Had to spend another 20 minutes there while they tried to locate the car's owner. The place is really just a clamshack instead of a restaurant so don't expect more. Awesome location though. We laugh about our evening there now because it was so unbelievable but sadly we won't go back. read more
