I'm honestly struggling to write a review as mine would just echo what everyone else has said. This is a good shop. Mechanics are honest, don't overcharge, and in my case, actually undercharged me the last time I was in. They only charged me for 1/2 an hour of work, $80, even though two different mechanics had looked at it multiple times to try to identify a slight rattling noise. They said it is not a safety issue, they will look again the next time I get an oil change, and if it gets worse they will be able to identify and fix it but as it isn't a safety issue they don't want me to put money in it unnecessarily at this time. They did let me know of some repairs I will need in the next year. I never feel like anyone there talks to me differently or charges me differently for being a woman, which is a stereotype you hear about mechanics (though honestly I've dealt with that more with HVAC techs, but I digress). When I dropped my car off on a thursday evening for a friday appointment, Rich called me back an hour later just to let me know he had looked at it already and didn't think it was anything to be concerned about but would do more work in the morning, which i really appreciated. When I was leaving after picking up my car I spoke to a woman who had been going here for, I think 15 years and said Rich takes great care of her antique car. The only other thing I'll add is the store has stickers on the door in support of gay rights and BLM, which you just don't see at mechanic shops, and I feel good about supporting a shop that supports my values. My assumption is the stickers signify all customers are welcome and will be treated fairly, which maybe isn't always the case in mostly straight white male-owned spaces. read more

I haven't used Jim's automotive yet, but I consistently here this shop is trustworthy and honest. I've called a couple time to get quotes on labor. Unfortunately the particular work I needed for my specific vehicle he was not able to do but both times referred me to a shop that was. I have since used both recommendations. Most recently for a shop in Vienna that specializes in transmission and suspension repair. It was a clutch recommendation (no pun intended) that saved me almost $1k. I manage 2 cars in my household. I'll be bringing them to Jims for various fluid changes and other mechanical needs. read more

My auto ac had ceased to blow cold air. I made an appt and took it in last Tuesday at 8:00 am. First time there; they listened to my report; told me what they would do to diagnose the cause; and had it done almost immediately . All it needed was some refrigerant; and they added a dye in order to determine if there was a slow leak somewhere in the system. Five days have gone by and so far, so good. No BS ; no additional charges or suggested service- even though I suggested perhaps belts and hoses might need replacement. Labor and parts came to $238- eminently fair and reasonable. read more

Honest mechanics that didn't try to sell me on a repair I did not need, and charged a very appropriate diagnostic fee for the services administered. I went in due to some brake concerns, and I was informed that it was just corrosion on my front rotors due to a lack of driving. To resolve the issue, they recommended pumping breaks a little harder to help the pad make better contact with the rotor. Will come again for future business read more

I came to get a thermostat change/installed. I usually go to a shop in DC but was in Falls Church and needed to find a good shop quick. I brought my own part, which Richard said was fine. He looked over my car, gave me a quote and potential time and took my car in that day! He wasn't sure if they'd have it done by end of the day, but they actually ended up finishing early! I also asked him about a weird noise, which although they couldn't fully inspect that day, he let me know what it most likely was. I am impressed with the quick turn around. I brought my car in around 11:45 and it was done by 3:30! On top of that, my car had one of those annoying "tow this car" stickers on the drivers window that are insanely hard to get off (My attempts to get it off were evident on the window). I did not mention it or ask about it but when I came to pick my car up, they had taken it off! They perfectly got it all off and cleaned off the glue. It's rare to find a good auto mechanic, but one that does a little more than asked is even rarer. It was a small gesture, but greatly appreciated. Great customer service! read more

I have found my new favorite Mechanic in Arlington VA. Just moved here and had a issue with my cars Cooling system , he was able to talk with me over the phone (to figure out all The details ) and then he ordered a part that he "thought " might be the correct part , after we spoke on the phone . Turns out he did know what the issue was just by talking to me for a few min . This guy is a real mechanic , and really saved me alot of money . I blindly went to this shop after searching from google . Funny thing is that I was prepared to spend over 500$ to replace the entire cooling system , and he fixed it for under 100$ . I can't gaurentee anyone that their cars issues will be as small as mine , but I'm sure you'll get great service , and a good repair ! read more

What a great experience bringing my 2010 Tribute in for repairs and over-all check. Richard quickly diagnosed my AC issue, did an oil change and replaced one of my rear light bulbs. He was kind enough to remind me that my state inspection needed to be done, as well. One really big thing...he also brought to my attention that the serpentine belt needed to be replaced - it was the original belt and had never been replaced. Now the strange whirring noise is gone with the belt replacement. Back story: At the beginning of the year I took my Tribute into the dealership where I bought it, and there was no mention of the whirring noise I heard when accelerating, even though I brought it to their attention. After the dealership's diagnosis they recommended 3 major (expensive) repairs and when done I was told my car was in "great shape". Clearly not the case and lesson learned. Most honest mechanic I have ever worked with. Fair pricing, work done on time or Richard tells you otherwise, good troubleshooting and quality work. No outrageous markups or tryout to sell you a ton of nice-to-haves. Came in once with a really tricky vibration problem that could be due a ton of different things. He checked it all out and could have sold me a bunch of expensive things that might have been the fix but maybe not...nothing was obviously wrong. He even asked if he could drive the car home in the highway to troubleshoot and discovered a problem there. Very easy to work with as well. read more

Numerous times they could have charged me for things I would not have known but did not, I was certain my alternator needed replacing but he said it could be the battery, and indeed it was, which save me hundreds of dollars. New to the area and took my car to another shop for an oils change / checkup. Based on findings I needed some suspension work. I had quotes from 2 other places and Jim managed to do the same work for about $200 less. It is a leave it come back kind of shop, but there a few places in walking distance or just take an Uber to a somewhere close by for a while. You won't get a fancy waiting room or all services under one roof, but he will point you in the right direction and work with you to get the best price and does the work on time for a better price than most. You wont find a better auto garage! I was out of town visiting family when my front control arm broke. They use Jim's so that's who I went with. I had never hd a car towed, left at a shop when they werent open etc. I had to go back home 4 hours away so this was all going to take place long distance. I left the car, left my keys, my relative left a VM, I rented a car and headed home. Jim's called soon after they opened on Monday and gave me all the info I could need about my car, what they thought they would need to do, and answered all of my questions. As they were getting the part from the junk yard they werent sure how long it would take. By that afternoon I had a call that the part was in, the part wasnt as bad as first anticipated but it still needed replaced. They also gave me a heads up on some other maintenance that would need addressed soon. Swapped a front tire that would need replaced with a back so they could do an alignment, properly. They even text pics of the parts they pulled off since I wasnt going to be the one picking up the car, not that I doubted why they thought the subframe needed replaced. If I am ever in the area, and in need again, or any friends from the area need a shop I would highly recommend Jims. read more

Upon looking for a new automotive shop in Boston, MA, I remembered my former. I wish I could transplant them up here! Since I can't, leaving a proper review seems like the right thing to do. This review covers work on my car done by Richard and Charlie. Jim's Automotive is a small operation, that has a trustworthy feel. I've had them check my car over, pre-road trip for any issues (as it's better to fix them now, than on the road), and had it returned with just a necessary oil change! I don't know how their rates stack up against others, but I imagine it's reasonable. Also, because it's a small shop, you can talk directly with the mechanic. Yes, you get to see and talk with whomever! Your car doesn't go off to some mysterious corner of a giant dealership, to return with a bill, and someone in a business tie to explain it. Nice, straight-forward and trustworthy. Those three words sum up Jim's Automotive for me. read more
