Here's my experience. I called and said I'm going out of town for 3 days I'll drop the car off Monday am. Drop the car off, get sent the attached bill. They charge a ~$150 fee to look at the car (not applied to repairs). Then it was time to do some market research on the cost of repairs. Turns out, these guys are 2x the going rate. Then they call you non stop to proceed with the work. If you tell them no, they continue to call hourly demanding $100/day storage fee until you pick up the car. read more

Thanks Jackson and the team at Japanese Auto Care for taking care of my Honda! I moved to VA a few months ago so I no longer have all my "go to" places that I have relied on for years (doctors, mechanic, tailor, etc.) it's really hard building all of that up somewhere new, so when the dashboard of my Honda lit up like a Christmas tree, let's just say I was NOT filled with cheer. I found Japanese Auto on Yelp (thanks fellow Yelpers!) and called right away. I was able to drop my car off right away and they ran some tests on it. They replaced my battery and continued to assess the issue. Jackson provided me with a thorough explanation and helped me understand the next steps in my cars repairs. Unfortunately the fix was estimated to be about $3k, so I wasn't ready to do that right away and I never felt pressured to get the maintenance done immediately. Two years later! I still go to Japanese Auto Care for all my car needs because Jackson is such a kind and honest businessman. Today, I hit a pole in a parking lot and knocked off part of my fender. I immediately drove to Japanese Auto and asked to talk to Jackson. He came out from the shop and told me it was bad and had to be replaced and would cost at least $800. But he doesn't do body work. I was so upset and did not know how to drive with it flapping. Jackson then went under my car and somehow got a zip tie on it inside to hold the fender in place. He said it's now my decision if I get it replaced. He refused to let me pay for it and said he just wants his regular customers to be okay. The recent experience with a team member at Japanese Auto Care, 4530 N Washington Blvd, Arlington, VA 22201, reminded me why I live by the quote "When someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time." - ma Also, the experience reminded me why I typically always go to the dealership to get my vehicle serviced, which I will continue to do. Yes, in some cases, rates are cheaper, but let's say you get what you pay for, which has proven to be the case with my experiences at Japanese Auto Care. Someone in my condo community referred the company, which I will not. My Experiences 1. Front Tire Structs Replacement a. They installed aftermarket parts that failed within less than a year. b. Even though I was willing to pay for a better brand, the team lacked focus and drive to find a better one. Luckily, they were willing to honor the warranty to replace them with the same ones that failed in less than a year. c. I went to the Honda dealership on Glebe Road to have the work done correctly, and I have not had an issue since. Additionally, the cost was approximately $ 200. 2. Front Passenger or back seat window regulator; I can't remember which. a. I chose to give them another try, as my thoughts were, how could they get a simple regulator repair wrong? b. Luckily, I have not had any issues, which I suspect is due to the less frequently used window. c. I later learned the repair cost was cheaper if I went to the dealership. Transmission coolant hose replacement a. I dropped the car off in an empty lot and left the key in their drop box. b. I received an abrasive email informing me of the diagnostic fee, $120, and if I did not want to pay the cost, "please come get your vehicle immediately." That response should have been a sign of what's to come. c. On Google, if you search for "Japanese Auto" in the area, two companies come back. c.1. One closes at 5:30 PM, where my vehicle was, and the other closes at 6 PM, which was not clear to me at the time I left my office early, thinking I would arrive at 5ish to get my vehicle before 6 PM. c.2. Unfortunately, traffic was heavy, but I managed to drive into the empty lot at ~5:28, as the attendant looked directly at me while he walked a lady to her car. As he walked back into the building, looking at me as I got out of my car, he made a conscious effort to lock the door. c.3. As I came to realize when I attempted to enter, he looked at me through the glass. I guess he had a "small window of mental moment of decency" that sparked him to come to the door, blocking me from entering, before I communicated that I just wanted to give him my money and get my car, and a bell went off in his head. Ironically, he knew exactly who I was because he said my name and car model before I gave any details. c.4. He made a point to tell me they have class at 5:30. So I asked what time it was, as I did not know for sure at the time, which he said was 5:31. Initially, thinking he had a bad day, which I will explain later, was not the case; I offered to come back tomorrow. He chose to proceed to have me close the bill. c.5. He knew I drove a car there alone because he saw me in the parking lot, and I had communicated my plan to "immediately Uber back after dropping off the car I was driving to pick up the one they just repaired. However, he wanted to maintain the negative tone, telling me that if I didn't come to retrieve it, he would have my vehicle towed from his lot. Again, his lot was empty, and I did not under why he was being so aggressively negative. c.6. I did not feed into his anger, so he stopped talking and went to park my CR-V in the empty parking lot, handing me the key without a word between us. c.7. Needless to say, as I explained when I saw it online via email, he wants to respond, telling me I looked at the wrong company time, and I make sure I have the time right, which is how the negative mail ended. c.8. I ended the thread by stating they he had poor customer service. Inferring that it was unclear to me why, at his own admission of the time, 5:30 versus 5:31 was a problem when I was willing to come back another day. Additionally, I communicated that he should not contact me further in any form and that he will not see me for service again. I say this because he clearly treated the female, who had no melanoma in her skin, differently from how he treated me. So, I am not sure if the issue pertains to the fact that he saw me as a big black man first versus a customer, or if he is simply a "bad person with bad energy,". Unfortunately, he is one of the company's primary points of contact. I don't suspect the company address issues and don't want to be contacted in any form. So, make your service decision wisely. I don't recommend this place and will likely always go back to the dealership, foregoing any potential cost savings to ensure a better chance of good customer service and durable car parts. read more

As my 2015 Subaru approached 1K miles decided to forgo the dealer and let JAC look it over. When I took it in every warning light was flashing. A quick check revealed 2 CVT transmission error codes. Advised me to take it straight to dealer for a check. Before going I called Subaru and determined I still had 20 days left on extended CVT warranty. Dealer quickly replaced faulty solenoid body at no cost and I returned the car to JAC. They spotted several items in need of repair, did all the Subaru recommended service items and worked with my schedule. I'm now enjoying a Subaru that I hope will got to 150k if not longer, and JAC will be the folks who will service it. read more

This is the only place you should take your Subaru if you own one and live in Arlington or the DMV area. Not only are they meticulous, highly skilled, and incredibly knowledgeable, but they are also fair and reliable. I've dealt with too many scrupulous car mechanics in the area, including a business named Japanese Auto Service on Wilson Blvd (who price gouge, don't complete work, and are completely unreliable). Any time I've brought my car to this business they are always accommodating and have never waited more than a day to get a diagnosis and labor cost report. They perform their repairs meticulously and extremely efficient, my car has never been in there for more than a few days. I've gone to Japanese Auto Care twice and both times have been very disappointed. The first time was due to an unusual problem with my Prius's hybrid system; the mechanics at Japanese Auto Care took a look and literally did not know how to fix the vehicle, and told me so. Fortunately the Toyota dealership was able to help (and in their defense it was a very unusual problem). Japanese Auto Care got points for honesty, but as it was a problem unique to a Toyota system, I was disappointed that a mechanic specializing in Japanese cars did not know a solution. After I received a recommendation from a friend to try them again, I did so, and after this unfortunate visit I will not be returning. I was told that my front strut assembly needed to be replaced, and was quoted a price of around $1100 for that replacement. As that cost is far too high for a front strut assembly replacement, I took the car to a different mechanic for a second opinion and was told that the front strut assembly was actually perfectly fine and that the cause of the problem was something else entirely. They fixed the problem I had for $300! read more

I am sorry to report that Japanese Auto Care (JAC) is untrustworthy and should not be used. They refused to perform warranty work until after I first paid for a new starter to eliminate a grinding noise. I told them the starter was fairly new and there had been no noise prior to their replacement of my clutch and flywheel. They suggested that the noise had been there all along and that I was in effect lying. Since by this point I did not trust them, I took my car back to my regular repair shop which replaced the starter but, as I suspected, had no effect on the noise. I returned to JAC which replaced the flywheel they had just installed, eliminating the noise. This second repair was covered by warranty. But they refused to reimburse me for any part of my extra cost replacing a good starter. Instead, the owner claimed they had offered to replace the starter for free if it did not eliminate the noise. This claim was false since I would readily have agreed to such a "no-lose" offer: if the starter proved bad, I would pay to replace it and if (as I suspected) it was not bad, then I would pay nothing. Nevertheless, the owner maintained this false claim and then left the shop. I would not trust them to do any work in the future. read more

I've gone to them for a couple oil changes and tire rotations and have been happy with their service so far. They charged me $14.50 for the oil change, $10 for the oil filter, and $22.50 for the tire rotation. I brought my own oil. I give them 5 stars because of their integrity. My car's AC was broken and I planned to pay them to check it out and fix it. They informed me that I could probably get the same service for free at the dealership, and they were correct. I ended up getting an inspection, a new condenser (my new Civic apparently came with a leaking condenser...), and a fresh charge of freon for free from the dealership because of a warranty I didn't pay for or know about. I feel dumb for not knowing about the warranty but thank you Japanese auto care for saving me money. They could have easily just charged me to do the same services. I am so grateful for finding Japanese Auto Care 6 years ago, and I've never gone anywhere else! They've taken great care of my civic, shepherding it up to 195k miles and counting! I trust this shop to make sound recommendations on repairs and maintenance to keep my car running. A few year ago my car overheated out in the Shenandoah Valley and a local shop quoted me $1,000 for a blown head gasket. Had my car towed back to Japanese Auto Car - they correctly assessed the needed repairs and got me back and running for under $300. If you're facing a large bill, they can also help recommend which parts need to be replaced immediately, which have a few more months in them, and which are safety repairs versus long term reliability repairs. NOT RECOMMENDED! I took my car to this mechanic because I had a flat tire. They fixed the tire, but bent my muffler! If you take your car here, expect to have to get it repaired due to their negligence. I noticed a strange sound in my car right after I picked it up, but i thought maybe I was being paranoid, after all they only had to repair my tire... I AM NEVER COMING TO THIS PLACE AGAIN. When the people from Japanese Auto Care jacked up the car the muffler got bent. The pipe was touching the floorboard! (I had to take my car to a mechanic I trust and they where able to do straighten the pipe) Obviously I called to let them know about their bad practice and I got what I was expecting, NOTHING! Not even an honest apology, they just played dumb and said they were going to check with the manager and the technician blah, blah! they never called me back...that speaks millions to how much they respect and value their clients. I called a few days before drop off and they quoted me a price over the phone for installing tires - $30 per tire. The person I talked to over the phone said no appt. was necessary - first come first served. When I showed up, they said they normally take appointments and stated that I must have called the wrong place (I definitely did not call the wrong place). Then he he told me the charge is $45 per tire ($180 total). I said no thanks, since other places charge $25 per tire. The guy said "Have a nice morning, we're not other places." I love these guys. They've always been super honest and never pushy. My car broke down on the hwy and the diagnostic fee was much lower than what I've been charged elsewhere. The cost to repair it was more than my car was worth (keep in mind, my 15 year old car is worth 2 dollars at this point), so they let me store it at the shop for a few days (no charge) while I arranged to get it towed.
