They say "freaky fast" yet I have had to wait an hour plus and I am two blocks away. The tracker notes "out for delivery" quickly, within 10-15 minutes of ordering, but then it is "out for delivery" for 30+minutes, sometimes an hour!! Are they waiting until they have "enough" sandwiches to deliver to one building? Are they giving their delivery people too many orders to deliver at one time? I will not order again. I am sitting here waiting on my "out for delivery" sandwich as was hoping since my last order (and phone call) the service would be better. I was wrong. My husband and I were attending a convention last weekend held at one of the nearby hotels and needed some grub. Wanted something half-way healthy not more fast food, so we set our sights on a deli joint and this was the closest (since we were walking). When we arrived, all but one of the tables was covered with empty to-go containers... looked like they were prepping for a pretty massive catering order or something, I can only assume. But as I said, all of them were empty, waiting to be filled, just taking up space... so no one would've had room to sit inside and enjoy a meal if they'd wanted. =/ Two of the employees were doing... something related to said catering order, but they didn't exactly look like they were hustling, and they were definitely dismissive of our existence. Well, I mean who cares about a couple random guys walking in off the street to order a sub when you've got like a hundred-sandwich order to take care of? (Except when one of said random dudes is Yelp Elite and pretty unimpressed with how you treat customers...) The lady behind the counter who did take our order seemed sorta impatient (we were studying the menu too long, I guess) but at least sort of trying to be humorous at the same time? I mistakenly asked for a flavor in a size that wasn't allowed apparently cuz she just said, "We don't do that." And that was off-putting, but whatever. How hard is it to put toppings x, y, and z into a smaller-sized bun? When she asked if I wanted anything else in it, I said salt and pepper and she said there were packets for that... even though I could see the pepper shaker right there on the sandwich-making counter. ??? We got our sandwiches. Taste was okay. Price was okay. No options on bread, which surprised me cuz I swear every other sub chain I've been to does that. How is Jimmy John's competing? I don't know. I really doubt I'll be hitting up another one unless the same type of situation arises where we want a sandwich and Jimmy John's is closer than say, Jersey Mike's or Thundercloud. I mean, listen, Jimmy John's is not the best sandwiches. You gotta find the one kind you like and figure it out. Personally, I like the Club Lulu with added cucumbers and mustard. Some of the other sammies have meat that starts to taste....weird. You know how sometimes processed lunch meat is just weird? Sometimes that happens. Club Lulu seems to avoid that and tastes fresh. All that said, I order pretty frequently and this location has only ever messed up an order once, and it was minor. Pretty fast too. This place is amazingly fast with their deliveries. I work close by and order from here several times a week because it's so convenient. The delivery charge is not a lot at all, and you can order just one sando! For a #5 Vito (order it with peppers, it's much better), it's only ~$5.50 delivered. How great is that? I don't have to take a break from my work, can charge through my day, and I don't have to sacrifice on the sandwich quality. Definitely get the "Gourmet Subs", they are the best. They have really great bread that is much better than the spongy stuff at Subway. It's a little denser and a little tougher (which I prefer to falling apart and crumbly) while not being at all dry. They also make their own chips which are pretty good. I haven't been to the actual location and don't even know where it is...and I don't care since the delivery service is top notch. Of all the places to grab a sandwich downtown, Jimmy John's is my favorite. They're fast, they're cheap, and they're pretty good - really good for the price. I like the Slim 6 I think. It's $4.25 for provolone on bread, just enough to fill me up without making me feel 10 pounds heavier. The ingredients are of a much higher quality than those available at Subway or Quiznos, and I never feel sick or greasy-bloated after eating here like I do at those places. The reason I give this Jimmy John's (and most likely all of them) 3 stars is because the atmosphere is absolutely obnoxious. Eating a sandwich in here is like eating a sandwich in a 14 year old boy's room. There's always some kind of crappy wuss or jock rock blaring from the speakers and everyone has to yell at each other over it. So you have Peaceful Easy Feeling turned up to 11 with the customers yelling to the guy at the order counter, the guy at the order counter yelling to the sandwich dudes, the sandwich dudes yelling to the customers, and the customers yelling their private conversations to each other. The signs in there - those idiotic wannabe funny but really they just make the sign writer sound like a tool signs - they need to go. They are not clever or amusing or relevant. They are just annoying and they make me want to strangle whoever made them and whoever thought they were funny enough to buy them. The worst part about them is that the really long ones all seem to end on "life's too short so just chill out, ok?" which is maddening when you're reading this poop and thinking, "How much did Mr. John pay his 3 year old to write this drivel?". There is also not enough seating in here. They have like 1000 people coming through everyday at lunch and they have maybe 6 tables in the whole place. Whoever planned this restaurant was an idiot. I love sandwiches as much as the next Tom, Dick, or Joe. I mean...they're a staple of a good American diet. Me...I'm an Andrew a little bit on the plain side when it comes to a sangweech. I don't like my stuff too overburdened with a bunch of garbage; give me the meat, the cheese, some lettuce and maybe a dollop or two of mayo and we're good to go. Oddly enough, the one sandwich I like at Jimmy John's goes contrary to my statement above. The one 'good' (and using the word 'good' is arguable) thing about going to a chain is that at least you know what you're going to get every time you go there. Usually when I go to JJ's, it's kind of like what I'd imagine I'd be like if I were a dude who were into prostitutes. I want something quick, slender, dirty and kind of naughty because that's what excites me and keeps me coming back...but I know that it's going to be really bad for me and my relationship. In this case, it's the relationship with my better eating sensibilities. Andrew's Better Eating Sensibilities Partner (ABESP): "What is that smell on your breath?" Andrew *looking nervously around*: "Uhh...nothing, sweetums." ABESP: It kind of smells a little bit like salami..." A: No. No it doesn't. That's the smell of some new toothpaste I tried." ABESP: ..and maybe...is that...provolone? *sniff* A: No. I think that must be the nice healthy glass of skim milk I drank a little while ago. Yeah. That's it..." ABESP: And...yes...that's definitely...wait *looking at Andrew's teeth* a hot pepper..." A: No...it's not. I'm pretty sure that's a piece of spinach stuck in my teeth from the ultra low-fat spinach salad I had for lunch..." ABESP: "You've been eating a Vito, haven't you? *bursting into tears* ........ OK. This is getting weird and a little homoerotic, and I'm not into that. My point here, friends, is that if you crave a consistently good Italian meat sandwich, you go to JJ's and order up a Vito. Salami, capicola, provolone, onions, a little vinaigrette topped with some hot peppers and you're set. FACT: When soldiers in the jungle ran out of salt pills, they reached into their ration bag for a JJ's Vito because the salt content of this thing is probably enough for one to retain approximately the same amount of water a camel would retain. The only other thing I've had at JJ's is the Pepe, which is basically a roast beef sandwich. It was good, but the roast beef here isn't awesome. If you want an awesome roast beef sandwich, Jersey Mike's it is...but that's for another review... Another great thing about JJ's is that it's fast. Holy Sweet Dashingly Fast Greyhounds On Coke, Batman, they are fast. And, at this location (downtown) they'll deliver it to you. On a bike! Good on the environment! Finally, I have to give it to the sandwich handlers; they seem like they're having a good time for sure. There appears to be all kinds of hilarity, tomfoolery and a touch of ass-hattery happening here at any given moment. Or at least that's how it is at this particular JJ's. That's refreshing because it's all-to-often that you have some highschool-aged goof working behind the counter making your food or taking your order. And you know that every 3 out of 5 times you order from them, something is going to be screwed up. The two things I don't like about it: 1) It's not a place where I could come in and sit down because I would probably end up with a headache by the end of my meal. It's loud and obnoxious in this joint. Therefore every time I come here, I get a little sad because I know I'm going to have to get it to go and go somewhere else...somewhere else generally being my desk at work *sigh*. 2) I can't stand 'funny' signage. There are dumb, contrived little sandwich/food-based sayings up on the wall that appear like they're supposed to be funny....but they just come off like whoever does the marketing for JJ's was having a bad day and some old guy up the line of ownership thought it was "kind of a 'hip and cool way' to talk to and relate with the young kids coming to eat our sandwiches these days." So on Saturday evening I decided to end my on and off relationship with this sandwich chain. I was pleasantly surprised, but I figured my sammich would be wrong, as in missing an ingredient or something. Nope! It was perfect, and it tasted even more so. Now, it ain't as good as Blimpie's, but it is damn good. I got so much flavor in every bite I had a freakish sammy orgasm right there at the table... in front of my boyfriend-at-the-time who was touching his sammich instead of me. You can understand his resulting confusion. And you might sympathize with him when I tell you that Jimmy John gave me a more powerful orgasm than that boyfriend ever could. Ahem, anyway... I usually walk in and order the Totally Tuna without lettuce (Lettuce and sprouts, to me, is a little redundant). Sometimes they forget to leave off the lettuce, which would be ok if they didn't pack the thing with lettuce. The staff is incredibly nice. It's a cool group of guys working there. However, today was my first time ordering the delivery. I gave very specific instructions because there's no sign and our place is hard to find. If he had read them, he wouldn't have had a problem finding me. I guess he didn't, because I watched him ride by, go in a circle, and then finally find me when I stuck my head out the door. Sweet as pie guy, but they really should read their tickets. I sit down and open my bag. No mayo packet like I requested. That's fine, they didn't leave the mayo off the sandwich. I looked at my sandwich and picked up the phone. I was about to dial, but looked through my sandwich. Ok, there's the slight smear of avocado I paid $0.85 for. Never tasted it. Having lived in Philadelphia for four years, I second Debbie's endorsement of the Vito as the closest it comes in Austin to a Philly italian hoagie. I order it without vinaigrette and with mayo and hot peppers, it is excellent. Jimmy John's makes great sandwiches, and makes them very quickly. I often get my sandwich handed to me before I get my change! Their bread is pretty close to the northeast amoroso rolls that make those hoagies so great. I rate Jimmy John's head and shoulders above Delaware Subs, Jersey Mike's, and Thundercloud for both speed and how close their sandwiches are to the Jersey/PA style hoagie. It doesn't get much better than that, well actually it does, they are also open until 3am on the weekends which allows those of us who work Downtown to order late and get a great sandwich. I always get the number 12, California Beach Club, and it has always been incredible. On top of the great sandwiches they also have great chips and those big giant deli pickles everyone loves. I stop at Jimmy John's when I need a quick keto bite. I don't live in their delivery area but I love that I can order from their iOS app and have it ready when I arrive. I usually eat the Vito Unwich (lettuce instead of bread) with mustard and mayo instead of vinaigrette and no tomatoes. Particularly close to my heart are the very young punk rock bicycle delivery kids who work here. Angry little guys riding their sticker-covered bikes like very efficient hellions, reminds me of myself at 18 before I sold out/grew up. Oi. read more

I stopped into this Jimmy John's for a quick bite to eat while at SXSW. I was a patron of Jimmy John's while I lived in the midwest and was (pleasantly) surprised to discover they had a location as far south as Texas. I ordered the beach club and my sandwich was prepared before I had even finished signing my credit card receipt; talk about speedy service! The sandwich was just what I expected and certainly hit the spot after a long day of conference-going. I have zero complaints. read more
