As a lifelong Chicagoan, I'm kind of nostalgic for all the old "groshery stores" we've lost since I…read morewas a kid - from the small corner store to the Jewels, Dominicks, Nationals, and, of course, IGAs. So I'm naturally drawn to shopping in the last survivor Jewel when I can, even though I have to drive past Meier and Walmart and Fresh Market to get here. Saying that, this store always seems to go out of its way to convince me it's not worth the effort. Out of milk - or out of date milk even - items positioned will-nilly throughout the store (egg nog on an end cap in the veggie section?), aisles crowded with stockers throughout the day, not a soul around the liquor and wine department, etc., etc. Today it was the deli department's turn to disappoint me. I noticed on my phone app that they had cajun turkey breast, so I stopped at the counter to pick up a half-pound. Instead of a pleasant greeting, I got "What can I get you?" When I asked for the cajun turkey breast, the lady started looking for it. She ended up having to open a new breast. After opening the breast, she put it on the slicer and started slicing. She never asked how I wanted it, never stopped to show me the thickness, never offered me a taste. Maybe that's a lot to ask, but it seems like regular ol' customer service to me. After she handed me my slices, she said, "Anything else?" No smile, no thank you. Nope, sorry to put you out. The Express Checkout is just as curt. You stand with 10 other people waiting for another express cashier to open up, and only after the line gets down to 2 or 3 does someone come along to open a new register. Then they yell, "Next!" over and over until you scramble over to their counter. The other cashiers and staff are generally just as curt. I don't blame the staff really. This Jewel's been like this for years. Now they're making the staff all wear stickers on their shirts that say "Clear" to signify they've passed some kind of health check in these Covid days. Anyone want to bet the check is anything but a cursory set of questions and a forehead temperature check? How demeaning must it feel to have to display a tag to tell people you're not infected. Sorry folks, last time at "the Jewel" for me.
