If you set your expectations correctly, you should have a great greasy meal. Pros: their hamburgers are really really good. I ordered the deluxe with jalapenos added, and it was devoured in record time. Really great grease dripping down your knuckled kind of burger. Cons: Wait time for food can sometimes be painfully slow. We sat down, ordered and got our food around the 50 minutes mark. Drinks were coming in while we waited and the Texans were on to entertain us, but it was really really slow going for food. The bartender/waitress was also covering the cooking. Not sure if that's normal but it obviously is too much to handle for one person. Interior is a salty dive bar. Various beer ads and knick knacks on the wall. They do allow smoking inside, in case you're allergic or just not a fan. Wine and beer only, but they do offer setups if you want to bring your own bottle of hard stuff. There was a large contingent of locals and regulars hanging about and everyone was very friendly. Long story short, if you're in the area or taking a break from fishing the jetty, this should be in consideration if you're hungry for a burger. My family and I stayed at Treasure Island about 10 miles up Bluewater Hwy. It was late on Tuesday night and we were all hungry after a long day on the beach. I called around to a few places and most were closed. I called the Jetty Shack. Larry was open and he said kids were more than welcome. We drove up and our first impression of the place (with only one light on) was not very good. But, we went in and were greeted by Larry. He was very nice and inviting. He made us feel welcomed, considering it was me, my wife, and 5 kids. He took our order and cooked up a delicious dinner for us. Everything came out fresh and piping hot. Thank you Larry!! I went after reading some reviews and in search of a Philly Cheese steak. It was well worth it, large steak sandwich with lots of peepers, onions, mushrooms and cheese. Came with fries and I tried the fried mushrooms which were tasty too. Smaller dive bar, smoking is allowed inside, but not a real big problem. Will go back when I return to the area. read more

Hi folks, a Surfside Beach resident here. If you go back and find some negative reviews from several years ago, don't let those be a reflection on the Jetty Shack today. There has been a change of ownership several years back and they have put some money into the Shack and it is much better than it was. Two major changes: 1. They put in a smoke-eater filtration system. I'm a reformed smoker who doesn't care to breathe in smoke anymore and the new system is 90% effective. A couple of times the smoke has been an issue. Otherwise, there can be several people smoking at once in there and I haven't noticed. 2. The new owners have been willing to spend some money to have adequate staff on duty. Now you don't have to wait a long time for food. Waiting times are now in the normal range. If you want fast-food speed, you should go somewhere else, but if you are hungry you will get your food in a reasonable amount of time here. In general, this is a locals' hangout with American comfort food that is a great experience for visitors/tourists. Surfside Beach folks here are happy to meet and welcome tourists into our odd little community at the end of the road. If you enjoy a burger and fries, listening to Jimmy Buffett and David Allen Coe on the jukebox while your kids play pool, this is the place for you. If you take a look in the door and think you need to Purrel the kids, do everyone a favor and try somewhere else. The burgers are really good, the wings last night were great, and the beer is cold. Bring in a bottle of something harder and make some friends, be sure to buy the mixers from the staff. The service has become something awesome. The owners sit at a round table near the entrance and keep an eye on things all night long. They support the local community and are happy to chat with everyone that comes through the door. They had the good sense to hire Larry, who is one of the nicest people you will ever meet. He often works the bar and tables and will take care of you on the food. The locals will keep the Jetty Shack going as long as the current owners keep doing things the right way. If you want to get a locals experience in Surfside Beach while visiting, you should spend an evening here. You'll like it. read more

This is a true local gem. It is what is says it is: a dive bar and grill in a little beach town, where the drinks are served quickly and there are locals hanging at the bar. The food is good (definitely better than I expected). The grilled chicken sandwich was moist and flavorful, and the southwest burger was delicious and juicy. Each had a perfectly toasted bun. During a Memorial Day trips with my kids, we decided to order some burgers and fries to feed everybody. With the large amounts of crowds during the weekend, we did have to wait to get our food. But that wait was well worth it! We chose to do a pick up order (since we were not sure if the Covid stuff would make the dining room closed) but when I showed up to pick up our order I was pleasantly surprised to find a small bar and grill with a great hole in the wall vibe that meshes well with salty breeze in the air. Later that day, my family went back by after a night beach walk. The place was much calmer and empty and we were able to sit down and shares some beers and bar-keep conversations (the kids had chips and sodas). My girlfriend mentions to me that the reason that beer tasted so good was because it was our first barstool one since the pandemic started. It was a little slice of normal life again, and I am grateful to stumble across this cool bar and grill. Great burgers, cold beer, good bartender chatting, and chill vibes at night. I'm giving a five almost entirely because of the burger. Our trip host recommended this place highly because of it, and it was not disappointing. It was thick, juicy and perfectly flavored. Easily one of the top three burgers I've ever had. The fried mushrooms and crab stuffed jalapeños were amazing too, and all of it was well priced. Don't go here expecting a high class experience. They have beer in bottles, your food comes in baskets and that's about it. Service was slow, but it was one waitress for the whole shack (it really is a shack) and she was doing as good of a job as she could while being super friendly the whole time. The locals were packed in on a Friday night....everyone knew everyone and they were enthusiastically watching family feud together. It was fun to watch. Big sidenote: it's a big ashtray. Don't come here if you don't want to be surrounded by a cloud of cigarette smoke. It's not for everyone, but it was fine for us. For the kind of place it is, it's perfect. Found this place by accident while riding our motorcycles from Houston to Freeport. It is a small location but the food was very good! I ordered the Philly Cheesesteak and can honestly say it is the best one I've ever tried. Both of my friends ordered burgers and said they were very good as well.
