They use a powdered chai. At this point, I'm wondering if they even make their own hummus. Yes, it's silky smooth but I've had better. To be fair, I enjoyed the crispy falafel and fresh ingredients in the fattoush. But, the value also wasn't there. It was also partially my fault but don't get the falafel plate because it's $8.75 with 1 side or $11.75 with 2 sides but you can falafel patties for $0.65 each. So the plate comes with 3 = $1.95. The sandwiches are better value than the plates, which are mostly rice and not much meat. I had the chicken shawarma sandwich ($6.75), which contained garlic yogurt sauce, turnips, and pickles; it was fine -- the chicken was slightly dry and not very flavorful. The thin commercial pita they use is not very good. If you want stronger flavors and better pita, I recommend trying Loomi Cafe in Kerrytown (they have some Palestinian and Lebanese dishes) or going to Dearborn. read more

One wanted a healthy meal with no salt, and one wanted to avoid beef, pork, and lamb. After perusing the menus of a few healthy-seeming spots, we decided on Jerusalem Garden and met up for dinner. We were promptly seated and greeted by a friendly and knowledgeable server. Everything looked good to me, so I asked for her recommendation. She suggested the fattoosh with a chicken kebab, and I took her up on it. A short time later some appetizers (hummus, pita bread, veggies) arrived, which we munched on until our meals arrived. My fattoosh with chicken kebab hit the spot! Packed with fresh veggies for a light but satisfying meal, and some perfectly seasoned chicken atop, it's one I will probably make a summer staple as it hit all the right notes. Portions are generous, and I was able to take some home for the next day, which is always a plus. Worst Middle Eastern food I've ever had in my life. Being from metro Detroit, there are a lot of good options around, and this is the worst. Went here in 2019 with two friends. One had been going since she was a child and had some sort of nostalgia for it. The other friend, like myself, didn't. He ordered a burger and received a wrap. He grumbled the rest of the afternoon. I thought he was being a bit dramatic but whatever. I had the worst fattoush salad of my life. I put my falafel in it and the waitress glared at me. My friend (with the wrap) compared it to a cafeteria. Another friend told me he went here and ordered a chicken shawarma that came with chicken tender meat instead of shawarma meat and some sort of yogurt. read more

Food was incredible. The hummus platter was amazing and the vegetables included in it were fresh! My party and I ordered a variety of different foods off the menu including the aforementioned hummus plate (large size), three sandwiches (chicken kabobs, chicken shawarma, and beef shawarma--they were massive!), a salad (also huge), some sides included with the meal option, and a meat pie that had amazing flavor and a nice delicate dough. A very solid Palestinian/pan-Mediterranean joint downtown. Huge portions, great food, quick service, and reasonable prices. The rice plates with sides are huge. I didn't even finish my whole meal with two sides. I ordered the kafta kebab with a side of falafel and spinach pie. The kafta was seasoned perfectly and was moist and tender and the pilaf was flavorful and not too salty. The falafel is crisped to perfection and tastes amazing, a definite must have. The spinach pie, on the other hand, was not very impressive. It was a bit dry and too bready, which detracted from the overall flavor. My fiancee ordered the chicken and hummus plate with mjaddara (brown rice and lentils) instead of pilaf. The chicken was not dry at all, but rather plain, a blank slate for the hummus to shine. The mjaddara was amazing, the fried onions on top perfectly complemented the hearty brown rice and lentils. I will definitely substitute pilaf for mjadarra myself next time. I also want to try the kibbeh! As of June 2021, the restaurant is still doing outdoor-only dining, so seating space is tight. It's about 20-30 minutes wait to get a table, which isn't too bad, but something to keep in mind. read more

Went on a Friday night during the school year with a party of three and only had a 10 minute wait for a table. They have a nice outdoor patio if it's a warm time of year. Busy but not overwhelmingly loud or crowded. The food is really solid here. Each of their dinner plates comes with 1-2 sides, so we each got one plate and had an excellent variety. The beef kibbe plate was really large and tasty. Mujadara was yummy with crispy fried onions. Falafel plate was smaller but the falafels were fresh and good. Fatoush was an interesting salad with crunchy pita chips on top. The Hummus and baba ganoush appetizers were good too. All in all a delicious and filling meal at a good price. Jerusalem Garden is not a fancy place and the ambience is very casual (they have a counter where people walk up and order). Tables and chairs are all pretty basic. We had actually made plans to go to another restaurant but when we saw this Mediterranean spot had patio seating, it called our name! They have a good selection of sandwiches, combo plates, and a plethora of sides. For lunch I enjoyed a kibbeh ball sandwich (delicious, 10/10 spices) and tabbouli (a bit on the smaller side for $5 but still yummy). This was a order at the counter and seat yourself kind of place, which I found easy to navigate. All of the servers were attentive and very much helpful. 3 years later so time to update this review! Still 4 stars from me, but a more solid 4 stars, based on my last review, in which I believe I did takeout and not dine-in. My boyfriend and I were spending 24 hours in Ann Arbor, and we stayed over Friday night. On Saturday, I wanted to meet up with a friend, and we met her for lunch at JG. I had the chicken kabob sandwich, which comes with lettuce (which I skipped), tender chicken chunks, red pepper, onion, and "toum," which I learned yesterday is the word for the thicker Middle-Eastern garlic which I love. This was my first kabob sandwich that had red pepper and onion in it, and it was delicious. JG's toum is a bit sweeter than others I've had, but overall I liked it. My boyfriend got the kafta sandwich and my friend got the chicken shawarma sandwich, and both enjoyed theirs as well. A minus: no free toum (garlic) + bread. But we ordered a small side of toum, and pita bread (unlimited) came with it ... $1.50 which was reasonable. I've been to some places that charge like $3+ for a side of garlic. Waitservice was good as well. Overall the bill for two people plus the garlic was under $20, which was decent. JG is a little pricier than other Middle-Eastern places in my area (about $7-8 per sandwich, my area is like $5-6 per sandwich) but I'm guessing that's because A2 doesn't have a ton of Middle-Eastern places, compared to like Dearborn/Metro Detroit. Overall, tasty stuff, and I'll be back at some point. read more

Nearly every dish on the menu here contains soy - the menu advertises that it cooks with soy oil. There are very few menu choices (lentil soup or a "Jerusalem burger") that are suitable for people with a soy allergy or intolerance. I ordered the burger, which wasn't particularly good. read more

I have frequented so many middle eastern restaurants in Michigan. Although this facility is decently decorated and super clean, the food was incredibly disappointing. I ordered fallafel, hummus and a beef shawarma. ALL were subpar and just not tasty. Service was also horrible. Stay away. read more

Jerusalem Garden is definitely worth the hype. My friends, raised in Ann Arbor, sing its praises and I wholeheartedly agree with them. I've been a few times casually with a friend or two but I placed a larger catering order this week and was blown away! The order was for the office I work for and we put in sandwich orders for 13 people plus some catered salad and hummus and it went so smoothly. They answered my call and were able to get my order ready within 90 minutes. When I picked up the order, they were putting finishing touches on it to make sure it was fresh when I picked it up and fresh it WAS. The sandwiches were large, delicious, and individually labeled. While it's been one of the better catering options at those events, I originally didn't think it was special enough to make a deliberate trip here. Boy was I wrong. I got the chicken shwarma plate, with mjaddara in place of rice, and a side of fattoush salad. My bf got the kafta kabob sandwich with a side of fries. First let me just say that the portions are extremely generous. The fattoush side salad would have been enough for a meal in itself. The dishes themselves, were delicious - all of the ingredients balanced each other out perfectly - the yogurt sauce, in particular, kept the chicken shwarma exciting bite after bite. After having reading the reviews and a few locals saying to check it out, I went. It was a waste of my money. The food was extremely bland, to make the chicken more flavorful I used the olive oil they had on the table to coat each bite. I didn't get the bread toasted or "smashed" as the cashier called it and i see why they recommend that. The bread was extremely chewy, not the soft fresh version I am accustomed to. The lentil soup was very bland and flavorless, which I figured out why when I witnessed one of the workers pour a pitcher of hot water into the pot. I guess he was trying to make it less thick? Such great food! A very broad menu of Middle Eastern specialties, plated from sides to large plates. We had a group of 5 and ordered across the board. The only category that I felt was weak was in the dessert case, as most we tried other than the rice pudding, were just OK. The rice pudding was excellent. As for pastries, I have had such excellent baklava both at home from a greek-american neighbor who makes her own and from greek bakeries in the town where I grew up, that it is hard for restaurants to compete for me. I loved the felafel plate I had and thought the pickled turnips were a nice treat. All the hummus varieties were very good. The lamb my husband had was much enjoyed. There were so many options and I did not have the opportunity to try it but communally, it was all gone. All the pita was fresh too. The place is large, bright and airy now. Our host had been a fan since its original tiny nearby location and it was nice with a bigger party to have such ample space.
