Her survival story led to me requesting female cancer screenings which led to the surgeries that saved my life. My husband purchased several knishes from Mort's Deli. We understood these to be meat knishes based upon how they were described and priced. After bringing them home and cutting them open, we discovered that they were not true meat knishes, but rather potato-and-meat knishes. Had the product been accurately described, we would not have purchased it. We specifically sought meat knishes and paid the corresponding price (see the receipts attached). When I contacted the store to address the issue, employee Kate maintained that the potato-and-meat knish should nevertheless be considered a meat knish. Regardless of the terminology used internally by the store, the product was not what we reasonably understood we were purchasing. The situation became even more troubling when I repeatedly requested copies of the receipts. During the course of the dispute, I was informed that the receipts were not accessible. However, the receipts were ultimately produced and later emailed to me as ordered by the police. Notably, the receipts explicitly identified the product as a "Brisket Knish" and reflected the corresponding charge. The receipts therefore became an important part of understanding how the product had been represented and sold. Rather than resolving the matter promptly and professionally, manager Gail continued to escalate the situation unnecessarily. Ultimately, Gail instigated the calling of law enforcement to the store. Two police officers responded to the scene. Following their investigation, the store was ordered by the police to produce the receipts. The police officers became involved in what should have been a routine customer-service matter. With their assistance, the receipts were eventually produced after previously being misrepresented as inaccessible. What makes this experience particularly upsetting is that my husband is severely disabled, partially paralyzed, and walks with a cane. What should have been a simple request for fair treatment escalated into an unnecessary confrontation involving law enforcement. The needless inconvenience, travel, physical burden, and emotional distress inflicted upon both my husband and me were unfair and unjustifiable. As loyal customers, we found the entire experience shocking and disturbing. We sent the store owner an email detailing the incident but the owner never responded.

The waitress, Margarita (aka Maggie), had a very unfriendly demeanor from the beginning. When I asked a simple question, her response and attitude made me feel uncomfortable and unwelcome. I even told her that I was willing to pay the difference if my meal exceeded the value of the coupon. I was not expecting anything special--just basic courtesy and good customer service. I honestly felt as though I was being treated poorly because I was using a complimentary meal coupon. If you are going to provide these coupons to customers, they should be honored with the same respect and courtesy as any paying customer. I am extremely disappointed with the way I was treated. Despite its age, the restaurant has been kept in great shape -- clean and fresh, with its traditional wood paneling, dark orange booths and chrome touches. The staff is uniformly friendly and helpful, and the food comes out pretty quickly. They've been doing this so long, they just operate smoothly, and I appreciate the calm professionalism, even in a casual environment. I opted for Pastrami & Eggs with Sauteed Onions added. They serve it pancake style, and it's a large portion. The eggs are properly cooked to a nice medium well, which holds the pastrami and onions in place. The pastrami was mostly lean, so not quite as flavorful as it could have been, but the famously slow-cooked onions were packed with sweetness and that "bordering-on-burnt" Jewish umami that makes them unique. Cottage cheese was a creamy, cool foil for the saltiness of the eggs, and the rye toast was happily delivered warm (so many places deliver the toast cold these days). So yes, it was a good, solidly-prepared brunch meal, though nothing earth-shattering or crave-inducing. I was very deftly handled by a pair of good-natured servers: David and Kelley, but I would be remiss if I didn't mention that the prices at Art's are a bit crazy. I know the economy has everything inflated, but my bill for this egg dish and a can of Dr. Brown's was $37 before tip. It was good, but I'm not sure it was THAT good.
