Review for Meatheadz - Lawrence Township, NJ…read more After hearing a NJ Transit conductor rave about Meatheadz, I finally decided to check it out--and I'm glad I did. This place absolutely lives up to the hype. I went with the Plain cheesesteak with fried onions and pepper jack cheese on a seeded bun, along with an order of Meatheadz loaded fries. Let me just say, that cheesesteak was a monster. Fresh, perfectly cooked, and swimming in melty cheese--it's easily the best cheesesteak I've had outside of Philly. The portion was so generous I could barely finish it, and for anyone arriving hungry, you definitely won't leave that way. The loaded fries looked fantastic too, but I had to box them up for later (that's how filling the sandwich was). The prices were moderate and fair for what you get, and while the place was busy, the energy felt lively rather than chaotic. All in all, Meatheadz is absolutely worth the trip if you're craving an authentic cheesesteak experience. Rating: 4.25 out of 5

We ordered dinner for the family and tried several dishes so we could sample a bit of everything…read more There were a couple bright spots (the onion rings and ranch were excellent), but overall the meal fell short of expectations. Nashville Hot Chicken Sandwich - This was the biggest disappointment. The chicken breast was extremely thick and had a grainy texture that made me wonder if it was chicken breast with rib meat. If that's the case, it gives the impression that quality isn't a priority. The breading also fell off with almost every bite, and the sandwich wasn't well proportioned (one oversized tomato slice that wasn't cut evenly). Most importantly, it didn't taste like Nashville hot at all -- more like "Nashville not." Shrimp Po' Boy - Below average. The shrimp had a slightly fishy taste, and the bread didn't resemble proper po' boy bread. The greens were a spring mix, which felt like an odd choice. Traditional shredded lettuce would have worked much better. I've had po' boys in Louisiana, and while I wasn't expecting complete authenticity, I was expecting something closer to the spirit of the dish. This version missed the mark. Smash Burger - Probably the best of the three mains we ordered, but still just average. I've honestly had better smash burgers at chains like Shake Shack. Sides: The fries were great. We ordered the beer cheese sauce, which was fine but not necessary. The onion rings were the standout -- perfectly crispy with a clean bite. The homemade ranch served with them was excellent. Overall, I really wanted to like this place more, but the food didn't deliver enough for me to return.

The decor could use some updating. It was a bit dark, albeit clean. There were too women who appeared to be servers that came over to bring us our menus, which is quite extensive, and take our beverage order. Neither spoke much English, nor understood it very well. One indicated she was new. This place is owned by a husband and wife who are very much Italian. Accent and all. Maria, one of the owners came over to verify our orders since the waitresses were slightly unclear when presenting our orders to the kitchen staff. Our salads that came with the meal were fresh and good. You could also get the soup of the day. Two of us ordered the chicken francaise. One got the veal francaise and the other got a turkey wrap with french fries. Overall, the food was very good. I encountered a slight issue with one of the pieces of chicken. It was still slightly pink on part of it. I let the staff know, and Maria came out and apologized. She had us pick a dessert no charge. My coworker who had the veal said it was slightly tough, but still flavorful. Had my chicken been pounded thin it would've alleviated any under cooking. I digress. When back in the area, I will have to sample their pizza.

We also noticed that the place is starting to show wear and not as appointed as it was on our last visit. We came for happy hour which was really only $1-2 off of a selection of menu items. We tried the $20 burger and it was ok. The charcuterie board was not that impressive either. I pulled up a photo of the last time we had it and it was not even close in quality, selection, and quantity. The arancini were small and swimming in sauce and totally over salted to the point we couldn't eat them. The fries were just ok. On a higher note the cocktails were done to perfection and presented well. Overall, I felt that for the prices they charge we should be fully impresssed but this visit was mediocre at best.

Oysters for happy hour $3/piece... eh not really a happy hour price and the oysters are mediocre. I didn't intent to do happy hour on a Saturday, but showed up and gave it a shot with wife and her friends. The drinks are good and unique. The happy hour prices aren't really happy hour prices, and please don't say "value" because the portions were very stingy. You want the asthetic or quick overpriced lunch with really not great service, sure. Otherwise spend the $ elsewhere. Some happy hour items were incorrect on my bill. I let them know on the way out and didn't take the correction because $2 off an item for happy hour was robbery regardless. Fortunately for this place there are limited fine dining lunch options giving Boro the ability to fit this niche. Ambiance is consistently nice, 4 walls, water runs... If they want to charge what they charge they need better service or have better food. It was cool on the inside. Had plenty of seats for dining and waiting area for your food to get done. Also had a tv on the inside. Service was cool. They have different areas to order from. If u want hot food and salads, order on the right. Hoagies and hero's and sandwiches you order on the left. Great system. I got a bologna hoagie with pepperjack cheese. It was not what I expected. The bologna was sliced super thin and was shiny. Didn't like it. I ordered disco fries which consisted of gravy and cheese on the fries. Wasn't a fan. Also last on the list (the thing I specifically came here for) was deviled eggs. You don't find those on many menus. Not tasty at all. They have a lot of other items on the menu. They serviced plenty of other customers that day too. So people seem to enjoy. Just not for me. Thank you though.

When I stopped in this week for late lunch of a turkey/swiss sub, the wall menu looked like it had been hung in the last century. Still, it was extensive and provided succor for the famished. It wasn't open for in house dining yet, but the husband wife team were well versed in their menu and demonstrated prodigious production skills. Their strong suit was that everything for the sandwich contents was cut on demand, and thus as fresh as possible; and decent torpedo rolls (really the most important element of the creation) were pulled from a bag only as needed. My Honey Turkey and Swiss hoagie with shredded lettuce, mayo and hot/sweet peppers wasn't zoftig, but ample enough to warm and fill the belly of the beast. I enjoyed it. I have been on a deli kick of late, and FD was about as rewarding as the other local family run shops in the region. Good to help keep all of them in business by chosing mom & pop businesses open and thriving, rather than those factory like places that offer gasoline as a side dish.
