a man working in a sub shop

Ray's Sub Shop on Pennington Road in Ewing, NJ mainly serves the college crowd from the College of New Jersey up the street from there. It is a small store with six tables and a substantial menu of sandwiches, wraps, subs, burgers, etc. There are several lunch specials available daily which make for an economical meal. They use Dietz & Watson delicatessen smoked meats and cheeses, and pretty good hoagie rolls. My honey turkey and swiss submarine was large and tasty, with plenty of meat, cheese, lettuce and tomato. I nixed the onions. I couldn't finish it. No complaints. With a bottle of Stewart's, it came to about $8. Good price. The only downside happened when I went to the cashier in the rear of the store, and looked over at the small grill used to prepare the hot sandwiches and burgers. It was very dirty, and actually left an unpleasant odor in that part of the joint. I would not be ordering anything that required time on that hot iron. Too, the sole garbage container was overfull when I tried to put my trash in it. Someone should be watching for that and replace the trash bags before this happens. More attention to detail would go a long way. 2.5 Stars, because cleanliness is important.

I tried Ray's for the first time a few weeks ago and was impressed. I'm typically not a huge sub person, but their Italian was GREAT! Quality meats and cheese and fresh ingredients, plus they are extremely well priced. The only reason I didn't give it a 5 is because is takes way too long for service! I waited 15 minutes to order with no one in the store ahead of me, although, the staff are very friendly for locals. I'll definitely be returning, but this time I'll call ahead or just use the delivery service. The subs are too good to not keep going back. UPDATE This time when I ordered lunch, I ordered it at 10am for delivery at 12 with specific instructions for the address. I did receive a call at noon from an office on our campus to say they dropped it off and just walked away. Between this issue and the molded rice pudding we received, I just don't feel like the Italian (which is still great) is great enough to make up for the rest of the service and lack of quality and the reason why I've change my review.

My coworker hadn't been in there for a long time but she recalled the sandwiches and subs being excellent. Apparently she had noticed the change of workers there. She seemed to think the place was taken over by some new folks. We were the first inside and she placed her order round 1030-11am It took 20 minutes before she had to ask where her sandwiches were. They were sitting on the counter and no one said anything to us. They got busy when a hand full of other patrons came in at the time the sandwiches SHOULD have been done. All I can say is that if it takes that long to make sandwich, you have some serious issues. She originally ordered something they said they were out of. What the....so how you going to be out of something on a Monday? That's when you get fully stocked in most places. What a bummer because the hanging wall menu looked good. Just not worth it plus my coworker wasn't impressed like she used to be about the taste. It will be a strong loss of business before it even begins since the workers in the area are increasing by several with not only my group but the airline folks etc. I won't recommend. The place looked kind of dirty too. First impression was not good.

Ray's has pretty good sandwiches. They best in my opinion is the steak on garlic. The prices a fair and is a real sandwich shop, not like the more mainstream chains. The belly busters are really enough for a small family, but worth the challenge. It's worth a try if you are in the area. Nothing fancy about the regular hoagies, just made well.

After a few questions I ordered their "The Dragon," burger combo. They do smash burgers here, and the finished sandwich looked like a half pounder in an oversized bun, with plenty of heat from cherry peppers, jalapeños, onions, topped with spicy mayo and creole cole slaw with a hint of mango to offset the flames. It needed no ketchup nor additional contributions, and was delicious from bite one. All the parts played very well together. A little drippy to be sure, but easily managed. It came with a pile of crisp waffle fries that did require a squirt of ketchup, but were able second mates to the main beefy attraction. This was a very enjoyable meal, that would only be complemented by the house being better suited for eating in, right when everything is at its apex of perfection. Shitzz n Glizzies has the potential to compete with the big burger guys in the area. Will have to let you know about their franks and steaks at another time, but there is reason for optimism.

Rossi's is an area institution. In Trenton from 1933-2014 and then in Mercerville for the past 11 years. It has tons of old photos on th wall of the OG Rossi's and the people that ate there, like Joe DiMaggio. It was huge space with a bar, tables and booths. With the girth of the burger and at the price (May 2025, $16.68 with tax), it should have been presented with fries or a side salad, not just a la carte. Nevertheless, I'm a big fan!

Years ago I took him to the original Rossi's in Chambersburg after they won WIP radio host Glen Macnow's best burger contest. The place felt smoky and cramped and alive, a beating heart of the local community. So he came back to town and said, Take me to Rossi's. I want that burger again. The new Rossi's is bigger and brighter and very aware of its own legend. The website still shouts proudly about the award winning burger, the kind of pride that lingers long after the parade has packed up and the confetti has been swept into the gutter. The official burger of Polk High. We ordered the famous burger. It arrived on a soft roll, thick and respectable, cooked properly enough. The beef had that loose packed texture that once made it special, a little craggy, a little juicy. It was, in a word, fine. It didn't part the heavens, and it didn't cause my friend to close his eyes and whisper my name in gratitude. It was just a hamburger. The fries were plentiful and hot. There is still a sports bar soul here, sort of. Televisions glow and beer flows, albeit very VERY slowly. The menu stretches wide with wings, sandwiches, steaks, things for people who want something other than beef on a bun. It feels like a place that knows how to feed a crowd after a Little League game or a retirement home on an afternoon outing. The service was friendly in the way a distracted and rarely seen cousin is friendly at Thanksgiving. Smiles, sure. Refills, eventually. Our server moved with the gentle chaos of someone juggling too many plates and not enough time or help. Nothing disastrous happened. Nothing especially polished happened either. We waited, ee watched and we ate. When my friend took a bite,he nodded politely. He said, "It's good." This is not what he said all those years ago in Chambersburg when grease ran down his wrist and he declared it the best burger in the state with the certainty of Biff Tannen with a Sports Almanac in his back pocket. Restaurants age and legends settle into routine. Rossi's feels like it is living comfortably on stories of past glory. There is nothing wrong with the food, but there is nothing thrilling about it either. If you are nearby and hungry, you'll be fed and you'll leave full. If you're chasing a memory, you may just find that memory tastes better than the present.
