Almost didn't eat here because I was too impatient to wait until 10:30 when it opens. I had planned it as our breakfast/brunch spot before departing Meridian on our road trip and GF had already looked through the menu so it would have been a challenge to change course at that time. It never ceases to amaze me how easy it is to pass time with a screen and before we knew it, it was just about 10:30. I was very pleasantly surprised by the decor of the place when I walked in. It wasn't just stylish it was knock-you-off-your-feet stylish in there. There was only another party or two when we arrived but by the time we left, the place was almost jam-packed. I have been striking out recently with vegetarian options on this trip but I was thrilled to see a four veg option in addition to their meat + sides menu. I was debating between that and the pimento grilled cheese but felt compelled to go with the sides. Choosing which sides was the hard part. Fortunately, we were served by a wonderful server who was very helpful and made some great suggestions. I went with the mac and cheese, black eyed peas, sweet potatoes, and collards. Everything was great but the real star of the show was the mac and cheese which was quite possibly the best mac and cheese I have ever had in my life. I washed everything down with a sweet tea which was a wonderful accompaniment to the meal. We were both so full, I couldn't even finish all four sides. Stopped by this place on a recent trip to the beach. We had never heard of it, and the trusty Yelp app led us to a fantastic lunch! Set in the old town square area in the heart of the little city, the building is broken up into sections with a slightly different feel by section. We sat in the very back. I have never thought much of Meridian MS. In fact, I didn't care for it at all. That all changed the moment we got our food here! This was one of the best all around meals I've had in a while. My wife had the Jean, which is a pork/beef mix patty with bacon, pimento cheese, and a host of other deliciousness. She upgraded her fries to Trash Fries and that was a solid ass move. What was even more of a mind blower was that this giant ass burger and fries was only $12! $12!!!!!!!! I had the Meat & Three. Fried pork chop with BEP, MP&Gravy, and Cream Corn. It came with a little cornbread muffin as well. It was maybe the best plate of food this year. Veggies were great, pork chop was fire, it was cooked about med well with a tinge of pink still. Mar 2023 Came in for lunch since it isn't open evenings. This place gets quite busy. Service was helpful with any questions that we had, water refills and check ins were spotty since they were short one and had a lot of area to cover. They were all quite friendly when we did catch them though. I think we were lucky to get a table without much of a wait considering. I had gotten the trash fries to share. Also, fried chicken along with cornbread, mac n cheese, butter beans, and the squash. Everything was pretty solid. The chicken had good flavor and was nice and crispy. The setting here is incredible being right downtown Meridian down on the square. It is a beautiful old building with a lot of seating inside. Their service is also impeccable as we were very well taken care of. Now, we went on a Tues for lunch and we still had to wait about 15/20 minutes! So, the food was all pretty good. We missed Meatloaf Monday (stinks) but they do have Turkey and Dressing as one option and I got Mac n Cheese along with Mash Potatoes/Gravy as another side. Mac/Chz was AMAZING, Turkey was good, but they skimp ya as you get just one slice??? Then the stuffing was chunky or dry and not so good which was a bummer. We did not like the cornbread though, super dry. Caramel cake: oh how disappointed I was to not like it. After reading so many reviews about this cake, I had high hopes. I felt as if it was too sweet and the outer layer a little sour at times. My fiancé's mowmow loved it though! Different strokes for different folks. Passing through Meridian, we were recommended Jean's and it was a winner. The menu represents Southern food very well. Ordering the "Meat & Sides" is a no-brainer. I had the Friday special: fried catfish. It was a very large portion perfectly cooked... BUT the three sides I chose were what put this lunch over the top. I took the most basic of basics (collards and cabbage) to see if they could make them special - and they delivered! The fried okra was good, but not the best. We did feel a little rushed out the door. I know turning over tables is important, but let your guests at least finish their meal before pushing the desserts. Now, as far as that dessert menu is concerned... it's the who's - who of Southern cafe choices. We were so impressed with the selection, that we felt obligated to tey one despite not having any room left over. We shared a large slice of Chocolate Meringue pie, and it delivered also. The meal is an absolute bargain for the amount of food they serve. The interior is lovely. Clean, spacious, and bright. The famous US Court House & USPS building stand guard outside the huge glass windows. We don't have places like Jean's up North. It's just that simple. I usually order the fried pork chop when it's available. Their perfectly fried okra is my favorite side, with the creamed corn my second favorite. The service is always fast and courteous. It's downtown across from the post office, about eight minutes from the interstate so you may need to circle the post office to find a parking space. Tiny portions (1 piece of fish) and 2 tiny sides was $25 with drink and tax. It was undercooked left me in the bathroom all day. The fish was slimey, smelled horrible and had a foul taste to it. While the food came out very quickly, the server disappeared afterwards. When we finally got a refill, it was hot tea poured onto already melted ice leaving lukewarm tea. Why do people do that?!?!? Brightly illuminated by street facing windows, and bustling with polite servers this place affirms your decision to eat here immediately on arrival. This was my second time having Jean's food and 1st time dining in. Table Service was excellent. I ordered several things because I wanted to try a variety of items. After all, everything looks good on paper. I decided to be basic and order fried chicken, Mac and cheese and sweet potato soufflé. My lunch day ordered turkey an dressing. We shared fried okra and fried green tomatoes. We both had cornbread bread and sweet tea. I tried everything. First, The greens were awful. Cornbread didn't help. Sent them back. The remainder of the food was edible but not amazing. Certainly not something that I want to visit again to eat. A positive - the sweet tea and caramel cake were excellent. The banana pudding seemed to be old fashioned homemade but the bananas were very firm so I didn't eat it. I'm done with Jean's. Go to Binke's or Queen City or Southern Fryers. read more

Jean's is a great example of southern home cooking and hospitality. We stopped here on a road trip to New Orleans. Our server was kind and the food was delicious! Most of us got the Meat Plus Two.
