What a gem in downtown Meridian. If traveling I-20, it is worth a little detour for delicious southern-style food. Cornbread dressing reminded me of my grandmother's dressing. I went during lunchtime and had a 15-20 minute wait. The wait actually wasn't bad, considering the place appeared to be packed. The server was very attentive and courteous (I think his name was Steve but I am not sure). I ordered fried chicken, fried okra, cheese & black-eyed peas grits, and jalapeno hushpuppies. Everything was delicious!!! And on top of that, the price of the meal was very reasonable. The ambiance was a "little" loud, but that was due to the number of people eating but wasn't irritating. I've got 3 deliveries from there over the past 3-4 months. 2 were great and 1 was a little lacking. The first pork chop dinner was great! The 2nd was a little lacking and the chicken and dumplings dinner was great! Everyone has an off day. So I would still highly recommend the restaurant and I'll definitely be ordering again! I eat lunch here on occasion and the truth is I should do it more often. A classic meat and three with other Special's that make it worth a trip. The food is always excellent and quality is consistent every time I go, the staff is very courteous and efficient also. Good southern lunch in downtown Meridian, MS. Located right across the street from the Courthouse and Post Office, Jean's does Southern Food lunch (Meat and 3 sides) very well. Only open 10:30 am - 2.30 pm for lunch their food is prepared simply with love and care. I had the fried chicken....your choice of dark or white meat with mashed potatoes and brown gravy with fried okra and jalapeño cornbread. The chicken was very tasty and seasoned perfectly with a light breading but the size was more like "pullet" size. My wife enjoyed a chicken salad plate with Bibb lettuce sweet grapes and grilled pimento cheese toast points. The chicken salad was perfectly to her liking. Stop by and see these folks. Horrible actually, even though the staff was wonderful the food coming out of the kitchen feels short on many levels, the chicken for starters was still raw near the bone with visible blood, the Mac and cheese was not cook completely as well as the collards still had a slight crunch and no flavor, I won't be going back that's for sure. read more

Traditional meat and three plates in a beautiful newly renovated sunshine- filled dining room downtown. Was leaving the other day and host was arguing with a delivery person because he demanded she leave her bag on the floor (guy proceeded to throw her bag on the floor WITH FOOD IN THE BAG), DURING A PANDEMIC! Will not be back after that and I did complain to the delivery company the girl works for as well because that's wrong; Someone said this is not true but why would I lie about a restaurant I used to enjoy? Additionally, his staff had called the delivery girl 'ignorant,' after laughing at her for asking,"where do should I set my bag then?" After being told she may not set it on the counter or empty table that was nearby; manager has now messaged me in response to defend his staff and tell me, a customer, that it's not my business how they treat others in the restaurant and tried to back track over this. I KNOW WHAT I SAW, including when he asked that girl to not come back to the restaurant. It also isn't 'regardless of what happened,' that is what happened and now you're calling me a liar, not to mention that Waitr confirmed the same thing with me on the phone being reported by someone else, why don't you ask the other owner which girl came up later and called the girl with Waitr ignorant. The host/owner didn't call her ignorant, it was another girl and your host/owner should be honest and tell you. Also someone else said the restaurant is 'clean,' I have NO DOUBT it is clean, it seemed very well kept and tidy, however, that doesn't make it acceptable to tell someone to leave their bags on the floor with a customers food on the floor and proceed to throw the bag on the floor and let your employees call someone ignorant when she asks,"where should I set it then?" read more

My daughter and I were in Meridian today for a funeral, and had lunch at Jean's. Our waiter, Stephen, was absolutely delightful. He made sure we had everything we needed.
