I guess it's the case with a lot of retail stores, especially ones that have been somewhat troubled in recent years, but it's always kind of a chore going to this store. Maybe one of these days I'll be less of cheapskate and pay for shipping, but until I do I'll inflict this upon myself. I recently placed an online order for pickup and went upstairs to the pick-up area. They moved it, but the signs were not helpful at all and gave wrong/incomplete directions. That was pretty annoying... as is the fact that the woman who told me where to go for pickup told me the wrong place. She works at the store but didn't know they'd moved that? Hmm. It was overall a good shopping trip because I got some cute sunglasses and, because their sales are awesome, a couple packages of pillowcases. I might have gotten some pillows too, but the bedding area was a little messy. The two stars are for the employee giving the wrong directions, the poor signage, and the lack of employees--it seems at times you could wander forever and not find anyone to help you. read more

JCPenney Portraits review: Their manager saved the day and photo session! Our photographer while nice, didnt have the skill to entertain our small kid -- so on all of the photos she wasnt smiling at all. She was cranky and we didnt know what to do until the manager came - She was outgoing and funny with our baby and the rest of the photos came out wonderfully! Truly thankful. We did have to wait for an hour: Our appointment was at 12:45pm, we were seen around 2pm, and finally left the mall around 3pm, coming home by 4pm -- the whole experience took 4 hours. I grew up shopping at Old Orchard and on Michigan Ave, yet I still come to Golf Mill, mainly for JC Penney. JC P is my go to store for my tween daughter, who is growing like a weed! I can always count on them for great school clothes for her, in the trendy styles she likes. They also have nice dresses for special occasions, sales galore, and my money always goes further here. They've changed pricing models a few times, and lately I can always find a coupon on their website, in addition to the ones I get in the mail; and on top of lots of sale and clearance items, I always get good deals!! My family loves Nikes, which always run $60-100, and over the weekend I got two pairs here, a $70 pair for $55 and a $55 pair for $43 on sale, plus I was able to use a coupon for an additional 15% off! I also got Ralph Lauren Polo shirts for my husband and son, for $19.99-14.99!! At high end department stores they are a lot more than that!! The salespeople are always super helpful and always compare coupons to see how you can get the best deal. They are really a dependable department store with decent merchandise, and there's really nothing I don't like. read more

This was a great shopping day here. They had every dress i was looking to buy very affordable and further coupon made the markdown even better. But I have to say the store needs some remodeling. For example the dressing room I entered so old and didn't feel secure. But I liked the store was busy. I think that with so many closing in mall this store needs loyal. I would recommend no matter your age or budget. But I would like to say the clerk was friendly and made me smile. She very sweet. I find this store much better than other stores maybe even better than some that have started treating their loyal customer rewards as if it a chore to go out of their way for you with cash. Picture looked perfect...that's all he wants to play now. But it never came in. My account shows no orders but .com department showed paid order & they tried to track. First time for their online ordering. Probably won't use again...shopped store alot when kids little. They asked at end of survey if I would recommend to a friend, I said "No not reliable" They put yes "I would recommend this to a friend" on the "Preview My Review" page. Such fun! Why ask? Please avoid the Portraits studio at all costs. Even if you book an appointment here, you're likely to wait 30-90 minutes past your appointment time (Google JCPenny Portraits to read about the experience of others who have been to this location). You're much better off going to Nablus Studio located on the first floor of this shopping center. We had a 2:30pm appointment scheduled. When we arrived, there were two families ahead of us in line, a family sitting in the waiting area, and both photographers were busy taking photos in their respective rooms. The lady at the front desk who I assume was the supervisor (since we observed her tell one of the photographers to hold off on her break) told us that it would be about 15 minutes. One hour later, we asked how much longer it would be and we were told it would be an additional 10 minutes (no apology, just a story of how others who had missed their appointment cause of the snow showed up today). 20 additional minutes passed and we decided to check out the portrait studio in the down stairs area of the mall, where we were attended immediately without an appointment. I feel bad for the photographers who work at the JCP portrait studio since management apparently does not know how to properly schedule appointments. The photographer we observed asking to take their legally entitled break at 2:30pm was still taking pictures at 3:50pm. We pointed this out to the supervisor and left. read more

She knows exactly what will match your walls, furniture, etc. She is honest and will never guide you down the wrong path. She knows exactly what she is doing, a true professional in her line of work, and will not disappoint. My husband and I came in on a Sunday, she had a group of women she was waiting on, and despite the stress of it all, she managed all of our orders and requests kindly, professionally, and with a wonderful smile. Omg... just had the worst scariest experience at this JCP. Went in with my daughter to look at boots and shoes. The shoe department is apparently "unmanned" no more customer service. I was trying to find Liz boots in a certain style (on display) in my size. The boxes are out on the shelves below in a very disorganized fashion, plus sizes on the sides of the boxes.... impossible to see. Had to go to nearby register counter and asked if they had anyone working in shoes... was told yes, they yelled over and a man appeared. I asked how I find my size with the boxes in sideways, he said you just have to look... Okay, I said guess it's self serve... kind of like buying $10 Walmart shoes. (Only im looking at $100 boots) Tried on about 6 pair of boots, found a couple others I was interested in but couldn't find my size. Looked around for the "shoe guy" but he was no where to be found. Feeling frustrated and overwhelmed trying to find anything, I asked again at the check out counter if possibly a manager was working. They told me one would be right over. I went and continued to look at shoes, after about 20 more minutes, still no "shoe guy" and no manager. By now, my daughter has found some shoes that she wants. I actually then checked to see if they were possibly available at another store, assuming at this point no one cares if we buy anything. I decide to ask at the counter if a manager was ever coming and they tell me "she never answered" I told them how frustrating this whole experience was and that I just wanted to go buy shoes somewhere else. They offered to call the manager again. I agreed figuring someone should know what kind of experience we had. The manager on duty then appeared quite quickly. Which was a good thing since "shoe guy" also suddenly appeared and came away us telling about the mess we had left. Are you kidding me? You couldn't help me....Tony.... but now that I'm frustrated and can't find anything you have the nerve to argue with me. Maybe you should have offered some help. Instead you claimed that you offered and I said I didn't need help. Liar Liar! The way you spoke to us was completely unacceptable and we felt threatened and very uncomfortable. Certainly not what we came in there for. You even yelled and argued with the manager at this point, even after I asked you to walk away and stop confronting us. When I asked my daughter to video your behavior, you seemed to get a different attitude. Well Tony, I hope JCP has you on video because you are a crazy psycho and if they do not guarantee me that you no longer work there. I WILL NEVER SHOP AT GOLFMILL JCP EVER AGAIN! NO TELLING WHAT YOUR NEXT "BREAK" WILL ENTAIL. The manager on duty did offer to give us discount on my daughter's shoes, which against my better judgment, we bought. But I'm telling you, if that's the way JCP allows its customers to be treated, I hope you follow suit and close just like Sears. Because no one will be shopping there. While in the shoe area, I noted filthy mirrors, shoes stuffing all over the floor, general disorganization, so you certainly weren't attending to that in lieu of customer service. WORST SHOPPING EXPERIENCE OF MY LIFE. After being threatened by Tony, I certainly wasnt going to stick around, buy more or go back into the shoe department to put anything back. Also the amount of other lost sales while I shopped in the shoe department was astounding. Several customers approached me for help as I was more professional and available than Tony "the shoe guy." I had to explain to them that I didn't work there and wasn't sure where the guy was working in this department. One of the first customers asked if i worked there, i told her no but that guy does. Shhh, don't tell anyone, but I am secretly a big fan of the JCP. I hadn't shopped there in years because I felt all of their merchandise was cheaply made and not stylish. But in my mourning over the loss of my beloved Marshall Field's, I decided to give it another chance. Now, I will admit, there is a significant amount of merchandise that is cheap, not stylish, and quite frankly, horrific, but if you can look beyond this aspect (and get a little chuckle in the process over a fuchsia and baby pink sheer glitter curtain fashioned in a "car wash" strip style) you will find some amazing things for really good prices. The new American Living line is very reminiscent of Ralph Lauren's Polo, the Ambrielle line of ladies underwear is well-priced & well-made and OMG I want to give a huge hug to whoever is the costume jewelry buyer. If you like BIG, LOUD and FABULOUS costume jewelry, you have come to the right place. More often than not I have had to restrain myself from buying one of everything. And $10 for a necklace? Sweeeeet. Yeah, customer service could be better, and this location could stand to be neatened up, but as long as I can buy my obnoxious jewelry for practically nothing, I will keep going back! read more

I haven't shopping at JC Penny in years and today was a reminder why. I tried for 45 minutes to get customer service on the phone, there was no answer, so the phone go dead. After trying this 4 times, I called back and hit the number for womens dept. Nobody answered again and again the phone went dead. I called again and hit the button for mens, thinking they aren't as busy as women's. Ringing, ringing, ringing and went dead since nobody answered. I tried men's 1 more time and it was answered like this "yeah". Astounded I asked if this was Penny's and he said it was. I asked which entrance was best for women's activewear and he mumbled something that I had him repeat 3 times and finally knew he was saying a street, though I don't know which one he was saying. It sounded like Cherry, but I didn't find Cherry anywhere near Penny's entrance. I would not be caught dead in this store !!!! read more

The manager Anastasia was great. We had an issue with an in store pick up order which hadn't arrived after a week of its due date. We were getting the run around from the JCP online and were told we had to work with the store to resolve. The lady at the return desk was nice enough but couldn't really help us so she called for a manager. The manager never showed up. Anastasia was on her way home and happened to walk by. She reviewed the order status and agreed a refund was in order. She quickly resolved our problem even though she was probably at the end of a long day and just wanted to leave. Honestly, this JCP used to a lot worse but they did some remodeling and the last time I was there (end of June '09) I found a bunch of new styles that were really cute, they were stocked up and the salespeople I dealt with were friendly and knowledgeable. I lost my receipt for that day and found out two shirts I bought for $36 each were now on sale for $20 and one of the managers (Antonio) looked up my receipt for me and let me come pick it up to do the price match! If only zero stars were available... Went yesterday and was literally policed by some woman who kept marching around the small space standing behind me for no reason. My mom asked her for the price of a specific pair of glasses and she responded that the glasses were "different prices." The "sale" is supposed to be two pairs for $99 but we were quoted a price of $693.00 . They looked for a cheaper price and quoted $673. Of course they justified the $600 price difference with the complexity of the prescription. Guess what? The last pair of glasses my mom got were also from here and she can not see in those either--from day one. The optometrist who examined her yesterday confirmed that the glasses were made incorrectly. My last experience with them ended with them stealing a pair of glasses I ordered which were really sharp then replacing them with some crazy looking glasses I had never seen. We tried giving them another chance but never again. No wonder they are going out of business they should. read more

Why are retailers like JC Penney going out of business? Lack of common sense! I walked into the JC Penney store in Niles Illinois and since I was there to purchase small appliances I went around the store looking for a shopping cart or a basket since there were none near the entrance. I asked a cashier where the shopping carts were located. Her response was "oh I am sorry there are only 3 carts in the store." 3 shopping carts in the entire store! When I looked around I saw customers shopping around JC Penney with shopping carts from the neighboring Ross and another customer had a large target shopping cart and there was even a customer pushing around a shopping cart from Sears which is insane since that store went out of business years ago (FORESHADOWING MUCH!). Absolutely absurd! Needless to say, I did not even bother shopping around for everything I needed and went over to Kohl's where they care enough about their customers to OFFER a BASIC shopping cart. Seriously! You have a 2-story department store and you only offer 3 shopping carts. Get it together! read more

Ever since the JCP at Lincolnwood Town Center closed, this is the only JCP anywhere near my house. Since it is in a huge shopping center, parking has never been an issue. You can always count on JCP for good deals and sales. Last year, I did at least half my Christmas shopping for my family, my boyfriend's family, and my friends at this JCPenney and got a lot of good discounts. Over the summer, I bought three summer dresses that I love from here. My boyfriend and I also went clothing shopping for his new job at this JCP. I am not lying when I say I can pretty much find everything I need here. I went here on Black Friday and got a great quality adorable red and white dress for a 3-year-old girl for $17.50. Even while I was waiting in line to pay, at least three women complimented the dress. Such a great deal! I also got a great black and pink dress and a scarf and watch for my Mom. She listened carefully and made sure what we ordered would work. I had never gone thru this before and she made sure I was comfortable every step of the way. I can't recommend her enough. And the installer Dave? He brought years of experience to the job and was prepared for any eventually. He expertly put up the rods and the drapes and STEAMED them too! I didn't expect that. This is the best store for basics at great prices. Golf Mill location is always organized. Have also purchased some wonderful dresses for work and events! At unbelievable prices. Sometimes check-out is a wait but I am happy to get such great bargains that it is worth a little wait. read more

You also get to use an ad coupon on top of the sale prices. I always thought of jcpenny as kind of a dive store, but it was actually really nice. My husband and I opened our jcPenny charge account in 1975. He was primary I was authorized. He passed away. I never changed the names on the acct. credit was sent to me as a check in his name which I cannot endorse. Months back and forth With synchrony bank regarding a refund to me in my name. Three months and numerous long phone calls and my threat to take legal action finally produced the refund check in my name. It's obvious loyal customers at JcPenny are not valued. Because of foot surgery, I must now wear a wide-size shoe -- very difficult to find. DSW carries very few wide sizes, even in athletic shoes. I knew JCPenney carried wide sizes on-line, but buying shoes without trying them on is never a good idea. The store in Niles, IL, had a wide selection (no pun intended) of shoes ranging from inexpensive to my fav, Easy Spirit. The clerk was very helpful and told me anything I ordered on-line (if they did not have in stock) could be returned at the store if it didn't fit. The shoe department was quite busy and I see why. I bought a pair of on-sale Liz Claiborne dress shoes and the most comfortable New Balance walking shoes I've ever tried on. The store was understaffed for a Friday morning, it's true, but the customer service staff was helpful and the shoe clerk was first rate. I will definitely go back and check out what appeared to be a better line of fashion than I'd expected. read more

Although the shoe department was a HOT MESS...I still walked away with 3 pairs for $33.87. That's a steal! My feedback would be for them to open and display all the clearance shoes so people aren't having to open the boxes haphazardly, making more of a mess. I had never seen a situation like that where they had shelves and boxes stacked so you couldn't see what was inside. Either way, associate Sophia was awesome and clearly had the patience of a saint! I liked her rebel flair. We bonded there for a minute at check out. I like chicks with rock star attitude. Overall, the store was nice and had a lot of helpful people. I just have a soft spot in my heart for the Woodfield location. I think the layout and selection is better. However, I did also score a rock star cool MNG jacket for a measly $10.92. I almost passed out...this was like a $60 jacket that said "Clearance $30" so I guess there were additional markdowns. I was initially leaning towards 3 stars, but had to add the extra star due to the extreme discounts I experienced. I think this may have been the best deal in long time. Dawn in the Portrait Studio is amazing!! I cannot recommend her enough. The quality of her work is beyond anything you'd find at a high-end studio. I'm very happy with my children's and family's portraits. What started with a Groupon good for 3 images, ended in the purchase of the full digital download because I simply couldn't choose only 3 out of the many wonderful pictures she took.
