I've been to JB's Deli twice in the last month I gave my first experience a four star Yelp rating but I was really disappointed in my recent visit. I ordered the corned beef on rye on both visits the first time it was nice and warm and tender with just the right amount of mustard but my last visit the corned beef was tough nothing like the first time. My friend ordered the beef brisket sandwich, I called her later on that evening and she told me that "the brisket didn't agree with me". Also, I noticed that they had Metropolis Coffee on the shelf so I assumed that's what was in the coffee pumpers. What a disappointment it was weak and tasted like it was in the pumper all day long and in my opinion was not Metropolis Coffee. I can't believe what a good time I had the first time I went there it was great but it seemed like I was in a totally different place altogether the second time around. I was feeling in great need of some comfort food today. So while running errands in Andersonville I stopped in JB's Deli. I ordered a small Matzo ball soup, 3 Swedish meatballs ( no gravy) and a potatoe knish. Just what my system needed. Despite being very busy and understaffed, George was polite and took very good care of me. I ate the food there and it was heated up to a good temperature and the soup was very soothing also. Granted the decor is a mixture of so many things. I sat in the room that you have to walk through the counter area to get to. But it's all part of the kitsch. I have been a customer of theirs on and off for many years, but usually ordered to go. I am glad I stopped in and ate there. You should too! THEN, while we're waiting to be serviced, I see a book pretty prominently displayed on the first little table, something about "turning the gays to Jesus." Ok, nope. I picked it up, trying to figure out if it was relatively harmless, or one of those conversion messages. I couldn't fully glean the whole concept of the book in two minutes, but the author "used to be married to a man" and a bunch of other suspicious messaging, and I don't know, prominently displaying a book like that in Andersonville of all places was a real turn off. Been here in person a long time ago. Don't remember what I got then but remember that I liked it. Haven't gone back because we don't get to that neighborhood often. Tonight we wanted to order corn beef and saw JB's on Grubhub. We ordered corn beef sandwiches and chicken noodle soup. Both were very good. The corn beef was very tender and not fatty at all. The soup was good and not salty ( I actually added some salt). A small pickle and coleslaw came with the sandwiches. The pickle was very good. Coleslaw was a little different than the usual. I thought it was OK but my wife didn't like it. Delivery was much faster than promised. Packaging was very good. We'll do this again. read more

I have to say; I was terrified to give this place a try after seeing the Yelp reviews. Specifically, the photos people had taken. However, the growl in my stomach said: "Feed me, Seymour." So I decided to give them a shot. The hours on their door says they close at like 6:30, but yelp said otherwise, so I pulled the door, and it was open. I like the interior; it reminded me of some Julia Roberts 80's romantic comedy. It's like a small town mini-mart which I loved. The 7-Eleven from back in the day with selections you want and not stuff you settle on. Customer service was okay, and sandwich I had was like Whoa! It was called "My Cardiologist needs a new car." It was a monster sandwich of brisket, corned beef, and pastrami with swiss cheese and slaw. It was very delicious, and I would totally go back for another. However, on my next trip, I think I'll try the Lox. I should have just got a pound of it when I was there. Okay, this place needs to get over their schizophrenia and just mix it all together. Is it some sort of co-op that it has three names? JB's? Pudgies? Gordono's? "One of a FEW JEWISH DELIS"? But what's in a name, anyway? Every time I go here, I'm more happy it's a skip from my apartment. The food is fresh and great, and the owner could not be more friendly. And I can pick up toothpaste and floss. And my bad that I didn't order something with a more Jewish flava last time. This trip it was a Lox sandwich that was large, fresh and delicious. Open faced, lightly toasted bialy, super fresh lox, tomato, cucumber and cream cheese. Perfect. AND there is sable fish here. Not on the day I was there, but every Wednesday is when the Sable bus pulls up, so call ahead for that! Another feature is potato pancakes made at Manny's Deli - right here in the 'hood. Now, as Mae West says "Between two evils, I always pick the one I never tried before." The things I'd never had before, that I tried on this day, were sour tomatoes and Gefilte fish (with lots of horseradish). Who knew that these delights, which sometimes get made fun of by we Goys, are so delicious. And I did NOT put mayonnaise on it (joke: this Goy hates mayonnaise). I followed up by asking them how long they will last in the fridge. They didn't have an answer...the said "I'm not sure." Me and my friend are pissed. We were told to look at the menu, and so we picked up the menu and found something in our budget to eat. They made the food, and then when we got to the register, I was charged 40% more than what was on the menu. I was annoyed because no one said it would be more than what was on the menu. But at the end of the day, I couldn't care less about a couple bucks. But then my friend went up to pay for his lox sandwich, which was $8. And they charged him $16!!! They said it was because of the meat prices going up. Absolute bullshit. They said "We're going to replace the menus soon." I seriously doubt that, I'm sure they will just keep scamming customers. My order was taken once by someone who forgot it and a second time it just got left sitting on the counter in a bag. When my items finally made it to the cashier, she just walked away... In this odd mash-up if a Jewish deli and pharmacy, you will find some of the best classic deli sandwiches anywhere, and chicken soup that rivals my mother's -- with matzo balls of the perfect consistency and flavor. Twice a year during the two weeks surrounding the High Holidays in fall and Passover in spring, they make delectable gefilte fish that is every bit as delicious as the handmade wonders my mother-in-law would make.
