I have rented lawn equipment here in the past, and bought a few items here and there with no issues. I came in to have screens repaired and was referred to a business down the street, which I appreciated because hostetters does repairs, but they don't fix or make frames. I have been treated with respect each time I came in until now. I purchased a replacement hose for my pressure washer on the morning Friday May 16. I originally was not going to purchase it because it didn't look like the right fitting for my pressure washer, but the sales staff member who helped me find the one hose they had in stock told me I could just purchase it and compare fittings, and if it wasn't the right fit, I could just bring it back. It wasn't the right fitting and $79 for a replacement hose didn't make sense for an old pressure washer. I decided to purchase a new pressure washer on Amazon instead. I returned the unopened unused hose in its original packaging the very next day on Saturday May 17. I had cleaned out my car to drive my senior neighbor around, who was with me and my daughter when I stopped to return it, and did not have the paper receipt on me, but I had the card I used to purchase it. When I asked for it to be looked up, I said "This is the card I used to purchase the hose", to which the manager replied "Well I don't know that you did". There was absolutely no reason for this response. LOOK IT UP and you'd see that, YES I used that card to purchase the hose. I did not want store credit, but he said store policy states without the receipt as proof of purchase, store credit is the only option he could offer, per store policy. He could have simply looked the transaction up. For a refund, I had to drive home and find the receipt in the trash. Why would I want store credit at a store where the manager questions whether I made a purchase while simultaneously refusing to USE THE COMPUTER to look up the transaction? After I got the refund I waited to speak to the same manager to show him the receipt from my purchase. I explained to him I read the store policy online and that I know why these policies exist, but if he thinks someone stole a product, he could have just looked the transaction up when I showed him the card I had used. That is what computers and cards are for. He was so condescending in facial expressions, words and attitude that I will not be returning. I'm not shopping where I'm spoken down to, especially at an establishment that has pretty high prices to begin with. I will continue to rent larger lawn equipment where I had, while hostetters was switching systems over and I was unable to rent what I needed there. I will not return to hostetters and am thankful my screens are being done elsewhere, so I have no reason to return.
Thank God this manager is living his life within the walls of this little store and isn't out among the population as an officer of the law or in a position of actual authority anywhere. A simple solution to not having to deal with that mess is to simply not shop there ever again. It isn't just my business lost. It is that of my neighbor, and of my daughter, both of whom were present when the young manager spoke to me like this. We will stick to Lowes and Home Depot for better selection, prices and service. read more
