Durham School of Martial Arts

If you're looking to get in shape while spending time learning new skills in a great atmosphere…read morewith an awesome small group of people, do not hesitate to join classes at the Durham School of Martial Arts! Sifu Keith is incredibly upbeat and energetic and takes time to get to know each student personally and recommend an exercise plan both inside and outside of his gym. I have been attending his cardio kickboxing class 3x a week for 6 months and have lost weight, gained muscle, and gained confidence. The class is welcoming to both beginners and more advanced individuals. Highly recommend!

Outdoor boot camp. You might not feel Marine-ready after, but you :will: feel like a bad-ass. On…read moreTuesday and Thursday, they offer Boot Camp and Zumba at 7pm, for $5. You'll pay, start with 5 laps, and a warm-up of jumping jacks, high-knees and so on. Then you'll split into groups of ~6-8 and start the real work-out. The day I went, it consisted of quick weight-lifting intervals done with makeshift equipment -- sand bags, heavy poles, etc. -- and/or body weight. I thought there was a good mix of upper- and lower-body focus. And my heart rate stayed up for most of the hour. Frankly, I thought the exercises could have been more challenging. But given the heat, and dirt, and bugs that come with working out outside, the less-intense level was kind of nice. The instructor offered some encouragement, and engaged with the group to keep us motivated, but also keep the mood light-hearted. There were about an equal number of girls and guys, and the group's fitness level was very diverse. So it's not too intimidating! Parking is kind of a pain-in-the-butt (my car got blocked in behind a few layers of late arrivals), but there's a neighboring lot that I noticed other people were spilling over into, so I'd recommend doing that.

The huge tires outside caught my attention while driving by the area and I decided to stop by and…read morecheck this place out. I tried the outdoor/indoor class and absolutely love the workouts concept, specially flipping the big tires around. I was sore for a couple of days but ready to come back for more. I received a promotion value for a month and took advantage of every class I could. Well, my promotion ran out and I'm not a big fan of the "membership" value $$$ which you are paying basically for the limited classes and not for the use of the whole gym if you want to. I also believe that some good workout music will be a plus while indoors to keep you pumped through the intensive workouts. If you want to change up your workout routine, I highly recommend this gym.

Love OTF.... but current Meadowmont OTF studio customer service sucks…read more After 18 months loving my OT Beat Link (Apple Watch heart rate monitor), I recently lost it. It was a great option for me so I bought a replacement OT Beat Link ($140) on Monday at Meadowmont which is currently my home studio. I finally *found* my lost OT Beat Link on Tuesday night (of course ;-), and then proceeded to return the never-used-still-in-the-box-with-all-the-parts new OT Beat Link on Wednesday morning at Meadowmont. I was informed there is a strict no return policy for all heart rate monitors... doesn't matter if the device is still in the box and has never been used. I hate to give the Meadowmont OTF studio a negative review. I have been an OTF member based at Meadowmont studio for over 8 years, and overall OTF is awesome. I wish current Meadowmont OTF management had better customer service, IMO they used to do much better. Luckily there are several OTF studio options in the area and I would highly recommend trying those over Meadowmont.... I have found the MLK OTF studio in Durham to be a superior option and there are a couple other studios in the Chapel Hill/Durham area.

I was only a member for a few months. The staff was very nice and always helpful. The only thing I…read moredidn't like was that not all coaches ensured members were wiping down equipment after they used it. I was used to coaches hand out wipes at each station between transitions. Other than that it was a great experience!
