Early 2020, I went to a pop-up workout class in Durham where a new instructor was teaching a Barre3…read moreclass. I didn't know what Barre3 was at that time, but I thoroughly enjoyed that class. At the end of the event, I purchased a 5 class pass and was hoping to use it throughout 2020... which ended up not happening. By the time the gym was re-opening, I barely had enough time to use any of the passes. I contacted Barre3 - Chapel Hill, and they honored my purchase and extended it for one more year. So I got to use the passes this spring! Like a lot of people, I gained some weight through pandemic as I was moving a lot less: So I'm pretty out of shape. I only went to Sunday classes as I live in Durham, and this place it a bit of a drive for me. The receptionists are always friendly. I think I've met at least two different ladies, but they were all friendly and made me feel welcome although I'm not a regular. The instructors! I've worked out with two different instructors, and they were all friendly and all super fit & strong. They gave me many modification options throughout the classes which I appreciate so much since I'm very out of shape. Every single class, I left feeling sweaty but refreshed. I usually bring my own water bottle and a towel, but there are lots of towels for you to grab by the receptionist desk. I love that Barre3 is a combination of cardio and muscle work out. After going to classes consistently for couple weeks (only once a week though), I feel stronger. I really wish this location was closer to home (almost 30 minutes from where I live), so I could come here more often. I'm hoping to get random drop in classes as I loved it so much. Thank you, Barre3!

I was a client of this studio and have recently been in complete shock due to their service. This…read morestudio is constantly changing its rules, and they only notify you about it in emails along with advertisements. There are no notifications about these changes in the client's personal account. Recently, I was 5 minutes late for a class due to traffic (I was coming from a neighboring town), and I was not allowed in! The door was closed. It was just terrible! Previously, I had been late for classes, as had other clients, and everyone was let in. But it turns out the rules suddenly changed. I wrote to the manager, and she said that "I had opened the notification emails." It's simply disgusting to scold a client about whether they read the promotional emails to explain a rule violation. Yes, I opened the email, saw it was an advertisement, and deleted it. Barre sends notifications at the very end of the email, which is not obvious at all. What's even worse - I was late to the next class, and since I had already had a negative experience, I decided to skip it. The next day, I saw that I was charged for the missed lesson! The studio took money from me for a class I had already paid for!!! This is simply unacceptable. I'm punished both for being late and for not showing up. Checkmate! As a client who got held up at work, I'm in a no-win situation! I have never seen such terrible rules. They are constantly changing, and you never know what to expect. I have completely lost all desire to continue with barre.

I've been doing JAR Barre for more than a year, so it's time to share some opinions…read more First off, barre itself is a serious workout. Or it _can_ be, depending on your effort. This makes it fairly easy for beginners: the basic positions and movements are manageable by anyone, but intensity ramps up by dipping down a little lower, raising a leg a little higher, stretching a little farther, etc. If you really dig in, it can work you harder than any weight room session -- but you're always in control of that burn. As for Judy, she's vivid proof of barre's benefits and a constant inspiration. She's encouraging, observant, and provides discreet feedback/correction when form starts to stray. She's also terrific at keeping things interesting for regulars: maybe three-fourths of any workout will be familiar, but new challenges are always being introduced, which keeps us on our toes (sometimes literally). JAR Barre was the best thing I did for myself last year.

What makes Judy's class different from other barre classes is that she is a professional body builder. She knows exactly which movements will make the muscles defined and how the body needs to look balanced from head to toe. She has the ability to tailor the exercise to all skill levels, so everyone feels welcome no matter the abilities. Judy is also skilled in differentiating the exercises so we never repeat ourselves, no plateauing! She is motivating through leading by example, along with her very friendly demeanor. For many years I ran long distances, supported this training with yoga and boot camp, then added JAR barre a year ago. After just a few weeks I noticed the legs and glutes were more defined than ever before. I'm a believer! I throughly love her classes, will continue to practice with her 2-3xs a week and will join her to any studio where she teaches. Thank you JAR!

I love this studio! It is in such a great location. It is near a harris teeter, panera, burger…read morebach, and a lot of other really good food places and stores. I decided to try barre because I am not a fan of high impact workouts. Don't be fooled by the minimal movements - these classes are no joke. But, the instructor was so friendly and encouraging the whole time and I didn't feel embarrassed or out of place. The studio is clean and everyone is very energetic and welcoming! It really is a fun and positive environment.

I was really excited when the new Pure Barre Durham opened in the new Shops at Erwin Mill shopping…read morecenter. I've checked out other barre places around the Triangle, and this one was right by my house! The class is exactly what you'd expect from a Pure Barre class (scripted, a routine you would know). You enter the studio, sign in, and set up inside the room. Barre socks are a must, so bring some with you. There are bathrooms both outside and inside of the actual room, and only one wall has a mirror - so you aren't forced in front of one if you don't want it. Both classes I took started late, which is annoying, but it was the first week they were open. I definitely think it takes more than once class to feel the workout - you'll spend the whole first class just understanding what's going on, so if you have the opportunity, a class package is the way to go. I purchased the 4 classes for $40 newcomers special (14 days to use). Unfortunately some of the days the studio was closed due to snow, but the owners were more than accommodating about adding a few days back onto the pass to cover it. However, it was nearly impossible to get into a class! Even a full week ahead of time, I could not get into a class or on a wait-list - AT ALL (I'm talking the entire weekend was full). So despite the owner's accommodation with adding a few days on to the package, I was only able to use two classes anyway. My suggestion: If you have time to take class during the off-peak hours (mid-day? I have no idea) then it's worth it, but otherwise, any kind of package that can expire might not be worth your money. This might be due to the fact that they just opened a few weeks ago, so hopefully as they hammer out a better schedule, include more classes, etc. this won't be an issue.

I enjoyed their 4:30 afternoon classes and some of their Saturday classes. Many Barre studios only give you access to one location, so I loved that they gave you access to multiple. They also had fun events to encourage you to work out more. They usually had different barre socks than the Kildare location, for $18 per pair. When I think of barre, I think of perky, petite young women gracefully poised beside it, doing…read morepliés and point... building up their slender legs to support and sustain them with an incredible combo of strength and flexibility. The workout trend Pure Barre is designed around getting that dancer body... But through totally different means! I'm talking dubstep. Blasting as girls place kickballs between their thighs, then squat, tuck, and tooch (to borrow a term coined by Miss Tyra). It's true: I never thought I'd be booty-tooching to Scrillex... outside the privacy of my own home. The workout started with some simple stretches and upper body routine, and some floor work in the form of plank and pushups. They only have dumbells in 2, 3, and 5 pounds. The short number of reps and low weight made this section of class completely un-challenging for me. But that disappointment was eased by the next part, where we stepped to the barre and focused on hips, thighs, and --as they like to delicately call it in Pure Barre-- "seat*." [*I don't have a seat. I have a bubbalicious boo-tay. Which is why I wanted to go to this class in the first place. So for clarification purposes in this review, my seat will instead be termed butt.] The most annoying thing for me was that the instructor demonstrated very few of the positions (perhaps due to lack of space on the barre); and it was difficult for me to follow her instructions some of the time. Many of the movements are so isolated, it's hard to look at a classmate and copy from what they're doing too. So parts of it did not feel tough... which left me wondering if I was doing the movement correctly. But other parts had my entire lower body shaking like a leaf, butt and quad muscles on fire. And I absolutely felt those muscles recovering the following 48 hours, so I know I did at least some of the things right! Class finished up with some ab work, which I also felt was too easy, and some finishing stretches. One hour flies by pretty quickly. And I can definitely see the appeal in a class that's shaped like this... getting all the core muscle groups into one workout. But I would personally prefer a class that focuses exclusively on the lower body, to round out my own exercise regimen and perhaps benefit my running as well. I did a drop-in class that was specially priced at $10; reasonable. (Their regular drop-in is $23.)

I've been taking Paul Sobin's Continuing Basics series for about 6 months, and this review is…read morepurely about this series. I'm very new to yoga. There are free classes at my school, but I feel like you need a certain level of understanding of the poses before going to those classes. I'm the kind of person that would feel VERY uncomfortable mimicking the poses in class without learning the ABCs first, just for the sake of feeling sore afterwards. I'm also uncomfortable when the teachers talk way too much about their spiritual journey. I respect other people's spirituality, but when it's hovering over the ENTIRE CLASS, it can be very distracting. Paul Sobin solves both of my problem. In the class we would move from pose to pose, but he'd always mention the mistakes easily made. So when I'm doing the pose, even when he's not nearby to correct me, I could still keep in mind what to avoid. He offers a sweet mix of the physical and spiritual practice. For example when we start the slow breathing at the beginning of class, he'd mention how life is always busy and stressful, and it's good to take just a couple minutes to breathe slow and deep to give yourself a bit peace of mind. I really appreciate this. The series are pretty flexible - if you can't make it to the class you signed up for, you can do a make-up with any other series class Paul/ Sommer teach. Whatever leftover classes you haven't used in this series can be carried over to the next one. Students get a discount, which comes to $10 per class. This is quite an investment compared to the free gym, but I'd be happy to skip a weekend drink for this. People seem very nice, chill, and friendly as well. They also offer a week of classes free before the start of the series. The only con I can think of so far: The class can be crowded, to the point that the distance between you and the next mat is half a mat's width. Come 10 mins early to secure a good spot.
