Jazz is a very nice person but she talks incessantly, even stopping what she is doing to talk. I felt trapped there for almost 2.5 hours. All I got was a dry cut. No wash, no style. That was fine. Now about the service...I am very particular about my length (aren't we all?) and was clear that I just wanted a trim. "Just even the ends, please. No more than three inches". My hair was the longest it has ever been when I walked in. She cut off 8 inches!!!!! The cut itself is good, but it hasn't been this short since I was in junior high! My hair had lightened up considerably since the last time it was colored and rather than reapply the darker color, Jazz matched the existing color and gave it dimension. LOVED NIKKI!! I needed to find a salon closer to home, and Shear Bliss did not disappoint. Everyone who works there is welcoming and even offered clients birthday cake when one of the stylists was celebrating a birthday. Nikki is AMAZING. This was my first time visiting this place, and I am so glad I finally found a hair stylist who knows how to work with my natural textured hair! John, you are a MIRACLE WORKER and an absolute gem! My hair is naturally wavy and when I went in, my hair was almost to my waist, extremely dry and damaged, and my once-upon-a-time red highlights were brown-ish tips that just looked messy and not cute. At all. I used to go to Kim's in the plaza or to Kenny Le, and while they did decent styling and coloring, they never seemed to know how to cut MY hair. They always had to straighten it before cutting it and had absolute zero experience with cutting wavy hair. It was a disappointment because sometimes I'd walk out loving the way my hair looked straightened, but once I washed it and kept my natural waves, it wouldn't look even. Shear Bliss, this was not the case! I called in today around 12 asking if there was an open spot, and I spoke to John who informed me he was available but would be off at 3pm, 4pm the latest. I went in at 12:30 knowing I wanted a cut at the very least, but I was contemplating coloring my hair or doing something just to get rid of the horrific random blotches of former-highlights. From prior experiences, I knew it took at least 3-4 hours to color/cut/style my hair, so I was weary of coloring it at first because I didn't want to be an inconvenience and force John to have to rush through my hair since he was only there for a couple more hours. However, he was an absolute sweetheart, didn't rush me and was patient throughout my 4-hour stay, and gave me plenty of time to think about what I wanted. He gave me input and was very attentive to listening to what I wanted, and he was honest and upfront with me, the price, etc. He started off with washing my hair and cutting it, and I finally decided I wanted to have some red/burgundy tones in my hair. He suggested doing partial highlights and then a color all around. I went with it and wasn't exactly sure how it would come out, but John definitely knew what he was doing and constantly walked me through each process so I knew what was going on. (It was a double process to do my hair, first highlights then color). I ended up walking out at 4:30pm, absolutely in love with the way my hair came out. (Thank you for staying in past the time you said you were off. I went in and the place was full and by the time I left, it was just me and one other person in there) It's employees like this who always make the experience the most enjoyable! The overall ambience of Shear Bliss is very laid back. Everyone is friendly and chatting, and there's music playing from the speakers which was also a plus because I loved their playlist. Nikki was also there, though I barely engaged with her. But she was also an unbelievably sweet and engaging person, that was very easy to tell by listening to her speak with her other clients. So this salon actually has a lot of independent stylist. If you call the number, they can let you know who is in or who might have a free schedule. They will hook you up with their number and you call the stylist to see if they're free! I got my hair cut by John! It has to be one of the best haircuts I've ever had. John is the first stylist I ever went to that didn't put a ton of product in my hair afterwards, and actually really listened to what I wanted. I brought him a photo for reference, but he adjusted it to fit more what I was looking for. I absolutely love it! His price is also VERY reasonable (especially if you're used to paying SF prices!) and he is a perfectionist. I definitely would go to him again! There are a lot of other stylists there, and they share the space! It's a welcoming, fun atmosphere and I am so glad I found it. I've been terrified of going to the hair salon for ages after a bad experience a year ago. But thanks to John, who cut 13 inches off my hair, I have the A-line low-bob (lob) of my dreams! read more

It was a Saturday afternoon and I wanted to do a last minute haircut and color. I called the store and tried to make a reservation over phone. But there were no one that could take me at the time. One of the workers on the phone didn't give up easily and gave me John Darnell's number to see if he can come back to the salon to do my hair since he just left. I gave John a call and he told me he can book me next week since that's when I was next available. He then called me again saying he can just take me in that day since it was more convenient for me and I already had a style in mind, so that was very helpful for me. John came back to the salon for me. I came in for a hair color and a cut. John knew ahead of time that it would take about 3-4 hours to do my hair. John really took his time to color my hair which was the longest part. Since my hair is pretty much jet black, it takes a long time for it to be lighten before the actual color process. He made sure it was bright enough to dye it the color I wanted. The coloring hair part took about 3 hours to do, but it came out really great! In my opinion the best part was the mini head massage when he was washing my hair lol. After the hair dye, came the easy part. took about 25 min to cut my hair. I wanted an V cut for my long hair and wanted layers. Again, it came out really great. No problem, easy and simple. Since it was a long process to do my hair, I got to know a bit about John and he has an awesome personality! He was very kind, has humor and if you like scary stuff you'll probably find something in common with him, if not he has other cool hobbies as well. John even stayed during closing hours just to do my hair without rushing. It even ended up just us in the store. I never had a real stylist to go to but now I do! I would definitely go again. I found this salon on Yelp. Not a personal referral. Jazz Lee called me after I left my name and number requesting a blow out. She asked me to send a picture of my hair and told me she could do it but would quote $60 without having seen my hair and told me I didn't need to drive to the salon for a consultation. I made the appointment and she sent me the address and I responded by sending my picture per her request. When I arrived promptly at my appointment time she was finishing up with a client. Needless to say this began a 4 hour blowout process... She washed my hair and when I asked what she was using get this--she said "I don't know". I could see her reaching into the product shelf above the bay of sinks into a jar but could not see what it was be it conditioner, gel, perm or what!? Apparently she thought this was of little issue because rather than give me the bottle to look at for myself she continued to chat about her granddaughter, a failed relationship, her aching feet and back and yadda, yadda. I literally could not get a word in edgewise between her commentary with other clients, her colleagues and just general chatter. I hung up my phone call with a friend because I couldn't hear due to the incessant chatter albeit Jazz told me "Oh talk, it doesn't bother me" then stop talking so I can. Definitely not a place to go to have "me time." It's as though you're there to hear her out. Brother! Whatever happened to professional boundaries? Jazz continues to wash my hair with a "chelator" which I learn about as I continue to ask questions. I wanted to know more I also I don't typically use sudsing shampoos so I wanted to tell her about the products I use and learn about what she was applying to my head and she mowed over literally every sentence I tried to utter in favor of whatever came to HER mind. I learned that the chelator was to rid my hair and scalp of product residues and heavy metals and hard water buildup etc. I dropped a few names of clarifiers and protein shampoos like Joico that I used before thinking she might share her arsenal of chosen products but nope. Now my hair has been washed twice and I'm placed under the dryer with a plastic cap. I'm thinking I'm going there to dry she finally tells me it's a deep conditioner. Oh. She takes another client; her curls are saturated with oil. Jazz told me that all her client's: white, black and other "get oil...it's what it's all about." Ahem. The Filipino didn't look too happy with her 'do but thanked her and got the hell on. I set precedent early so I told Jazz that I preferred NO products, specifically no oil. I could not read a magazine article nor field a call without her saying "oh that's pretty" looking over my shoulder and even asking me to turn the page back to an ad with a "light skinned girl with freckles" and then hijacked the conversation again with a story about a similar model on TV...yadda yadda yadda. Ugh. She said "it's too bad we're not using oil...it really would be so much better with oil, oil is what you need if you want long healthy hair, all my clients use coconut oil...." ad infinitum. I added a "mmmhmm" and some "yeah" here and there and that seemed to suffice as she told story after story and embellished on her illustrious career as a celeb hair stylist from LA and her shuttered shops. I thanked her for the suggestions and assured her that I would take her advice...thanked her for honoring my request NOT to add oil as so many stylists don't heed their client's wishes. I thought that might seal it but nope...she blew my hair straight with a pick attachment (le sigh) then flat ironed and it really started to look great but guess what....Wait for it. She began spraying. I literally jumped out of the chair in shock...I asked her what it was--what's the product in her hand? Smoke. Odor. Eliminator. Now I've heard and SEEN it all. What makes matters worse is this is by ZEP. A commercial product used for cleaning. I buy products from this company to polish stainless steel appliances. OMG. She replies: "It's to take away your smell." Straight up. What smell? Ask me first. Maybe I don't mind my smell. She's trigger happy. I thought she was spraying oil sheen but worse: a commercial chemical on my hair that I just had cleaned of chemicals and residues by a so called "chelator"! There was 1 customer in the store; all the other stylists had gone home. I couldn't believe that this product was even allowed on a stylists booth! I'm still beside myself. She kept saying "sit down, it's going to revert I have to blow it back out". Geez. I told her explicitly no product. The natural, organic approach has been working for me I just couldn't get into my regular salon due to the holiday rush...how hard can a blow out be people!! My hair was just how I wanted it silky, clean and I was ready to go and then she pulls that shenanigan and ruined it and charged $20 more than she agreed upon. read more

I'm super late on this review. (Like MONTHS late, sorry!) but I wanna make sure I didn't completely forget. Nikki was great with my long, super thick hair! I'm 5'3 and its up to my hips/waist so I'm picky when it comes to people touching my hair. I was looking for someone who was good with colors (not just natural colors and highlights). I saw a picture on Pinterest that I loved with pink and purple and I had never tried colors like that on my hair. So after seeing the pictures on Yelp I called her up and scheduled an appt. I sent her a picture of what I wanted and she explained to me how long it would take, the process, and how much. I liked how up front she was with everything from the beginning. The result: I was happy with the color, the service, and over all experience. The salon is so stylish and welcoming. I walked in here hopeful but walked out holding back tears. The three stars is for the overall friendly service and my haircut not being bad-- i wanted a long bob so there was no reason for it to turn out bad. It was my experience sitting in that chair that docked stars from my rating. No one wants to feel uncomfortable when their hair is in the hands of someone else. Yknow? The reason why I'm upset is because after meeting the hairdresser, I told her I wanted a fairly simple haircut BUT there was a specific way that I wanted her to approach it. She cut me off because she had to wash her hands. Came back and I continued but she told me to sit down in the chair. And she never let me continue what I was going to instruct her to do BEFORE she started touching me hair. Can you chill for a minute? If she had just stood there and listened she would have learned that I did not want her to 1) blow dry my hair ever 2) comb my PERMED hair while it was dry 3) CUT my hair DRY 4) put product in my hair regardless of what it was. She did all of those things. I did not appreciate being talked over. I really just wanted her to chop off the length first so she wouldn't have to brush through the perm. And then wanted her to wet my hair so she could comb thru it and then cut it while it was wet!! Why? Because My hair is thin and falls out easily. And it tangles quickly, straight or curly, long or short. With that said, detangling my permed Long hair was a bad idea. Why brush out something I'm chopping off anyway? I felt strands of hair get pulled from my scalp while she was from combing through. I'm the one who has to take care of my hair everyday and so I understand how to work with it! I would have cut my hair myself but I can't see the back of my head. I would have appreciated it if you guys LISTENED to my requests completely and at least tried to paint a picture with me before moving forward. read more

I came here a week ago to get a haircut, I was looking for a place since it had been longer then I'd like to admit since I had a haircut. I saw the reviews on this place and thought I'd give it a shot. I made an appointment. Jazz was the name of the person who cut my hair. When I arrived she sat me down and started by telling me that I had waited far too long to get my haircut and that my hair needed some TLC, I liked this about her because it shows that she knows what she's doing. I knew my hair was badly damaged and so did she. Lol. She asked me what I wanted, I showed her a picture and she started cutting. Every time I would go get a haircut somewhere it was always awkward as I would sit there for 30-40 minutes with someone who didn't converse with you. Jazz was nice and kept a conversation going, which I appreciated. I also appreciated that she cut my hair a couple inches longer then the picture I had shown her and then asked me if I wanted it shorter because other times at other places you ask to cut 4 inches and they cut 8. After she asked me if I wanted a little more off I told her to cut a couple more inches off and she did. I really liked how she cut my hair and she gave me some great tips on how to keep my hair healthy. She listened to what I wanted and was very friendly, I will definitely be coming back here again. Nikki was awesome, I had of course yelped before I went and everyone was talking about Nikki!! So I went ahead and gave her a chance, my hair was super dried out and burnt from all the bleaching I did before (with another hair dresser) I didn't think anyone could help the hay on my hair, but lucky everyone was right about Nikki she killed it! I was also 9 month pregnant when I went in and she was super sweet and helpful (ended up having my baby the next day).
