Bohemian Hall & Beer Garden is a historic, family-friendly beer garden in Astoria, Queens, known…read morefor its expansive outdoor seating, traditional Czech and Slovak cuisine, and a wide selection of beers. It is the last original beer garden remaining in New York City. On a hot summer day, the Beer Garden just off 31st street is the place to come and relax, watch a game or event, or, at other times, attend a civic or social meeting with local elected officials in one of their private rooms or the main auditorium. I was here last July to hang out and hold an outdoor meeting about a local park in Astoria. We had a choice of burgers, mac and cheese, pizza schnotzel, beer-battered onion rings, and various fried foods. However, there is one aspect of going to the Beer Garden that I ABSOLUTELY HATE, and that is bouncers frisking down visitors or asking customers to show an ID. In my opinion, that is a turnoff and unnecessary action taken, for orderly, polite adults, and makes you feel as if you are in a strip club, and thus an invasion of the person's right to privacy. I recommend, yes, but it is best to go when you want to attend a group event.

They host silent discos here often, which is super cool! It costs just $15 per person, which is a great price. If you haven't attended a silent disco yet, you'll definitely want to add it to your list!! Basically, there are multiple DJs (typically 3 different ones here) that each play a different genre of music. Each person participating gets a set of headphones with 3 different channels - one set to each of the DJs. Additionally, each channel makes the headphones light up a different color. For example, DJ #1 is blue, DJ #2 is red and DJ #3 is green. This lets you see who else is tuning into the same DJ channel as you. It's soooo fun!! Silent Disco nights are also perfect for large groups of friends where some want to go dance and others just want to sit and talk. Because the music is only being played through the headphones, it makes for a relatively peaceful atmosphere for those NOT wanting to deal with loud music. A win-win for everyone! It's pretty empty on weeknights, but can get really packed on the weekends so just be mindful of that! Pro Tip: don't stand in the massive line outside to get a beer - head inside and get it from the bar. One Friday night when we were here, we saw an insanely long line outside, so we walked inside to find ONE other person ordering from the two bartenders indoors. We had no wait time while everyone else outside stood there for quite awhile.

Am I the only one that's realized Happy Hour is slowly becoming a thing of the past?!…read more In a quest to stay local and enjoy HH I found Bricks & Hops. My friends and I went on a Thursday evening at 6pm. Perfect timing! Zero wait time and were immediately greeted and seated. We decided to order a bunch of apps including fried calamari, empanadas, Wings (honey siracha & pineapple teriyaki), sweet potatoes fries & nachos. EVERYTHING was good. I would order it all again without hesitation. Full of flavor and not salty. During HH their margaritas are $7 until 8pm. I went with the Mango first then following up with the Tamarind. Neither drink was lacking alcohol. They are strongggggggg and tasty. Bricks & Hops is a complete vibe with an amazing backyard & great music. Definitely returning!

Whoever thought this was an okay substitute for traditional fish and chips... its not. It was very sweet, like cake and didn't even taste right with tartar sauce ( which was 95% mayo / most likely store bought ). I decided to eat the fish with ketchup to make it taste a bit more savory. The fries were basic, unsalted but seemingly freshly cut. There definitely needs to be a description of the fish and chips. I wouldn't have ordered it otherwise. I could've been allergic to coconut.

There are many large open areas where food trucks and beer vendors from near and far can setup. There were several live bands playing in different areas as well as a DJ and dance area near the carousel (which was operational.) Each guest got a small 2 or 3 oz plastic beer mug and these were refilled by the many beer companies setup everywhere in the zoo. Each vendor had at least 2 types to try. Many IPA's some pilsners, some fruity beers and lighter ones as well. The food trucks varied from a polish kielbasa and pierogi truck to an Arthur ave pizza van with pizza oven, several hot dog trucks, burger trucks, seafood etc... the food we had was all great. We had a great time at the karaoke bar area with a live band playing songs and members of the crowd with lots of brew inspired enthusiasm signing lead on these songs. There were certainly thousands of people at this event last night but we never felt we were in a large crowd as everything was so spread out throughout the zoo. The beer and food lines moved pretty quickly. The beer was obviously paid for by the admission ticket and the food was reasonably priced. There were many clean bathrooms and port a potties so no lines again. This was a fantastic summer party and one we will enjoy returning to next year. The zoo did a great job with all the logistics.
