My friend and I were visiting Ketchum and took the opportunity to try a new cafe, since we can have Starbucks anywhere, anytime. They had a great looking food menu, but we stuck with beverages. I got a nonfat matcha latte, which was great, and my friend liked her drink as well. The people there were really nice. The ambiance was awesome. I loved the decor. It feels really homey but also modern and cool. If I ever come back to Ketchum, I'll visit this place again, and hopefully the outside construction will be done so I can see it in its full glory. 30 minutes before heading to the airport was enough time to check out a coffee shop so we went to java since it seemed like a cute spot in town. I came in on a Monday morning and the place was only half packed so we were able to order our drinks and find 2 tables to sit down at. I enjoyed a dirty chai (chai latte with 1 shot of espresso) and it was made perfectly with not too much foam and the baristas were friendly. The coffee shop was very cute inside and cozy. There were some pastries laid out but it looks like a place where you can enjoy a pastry and drink but not really a place to grab a bite to eat. Terrible customer service. I got here at 12:55, about 5 minutes before the kitchen closed at 1. I stood at the register ready to order, waiting for someone to take my order for a while. The girl working there was taking out the trash, and when she finished and finally came to the register it was exactly 1 pm. I proceeded to order a sandwich and she cut me off and said, "kitchen is closed." I tried to ask her to let me still order since id been there waiting to order for the last 5 minutes but she just kept cutting me off saying since it was now 1 pm she would not take my order. Very cute location and aesthetic. I was excited to try this coffee because of all the great previous reviews. I ordered an iced americano and the shot tasted over-extracted. Agree with other reviewers about poor service and no sense of urgency. We tried the blended bowl and the oatmeal cookie. The blended coffee was super icy and not worth the money at all. Cookie was more crispy than chewy and not that great either. Line moved super slow and they did not even call our names when our order was ready. To make things worse, their CC machine wasn't working so we had to go get cash and pay extra ATM fees. Thought it will be worth it since this place is so popular..NOT! Two "Bowl of Soul" please. On this warm morning, make that ice-blended, of course...and a blended berry smoothie for my 3 y.o. nephew. I think he'll enjoy that since we're babysitting this morning. Service was quick & friendly. We sat out on the side-walk patio & enjoyed people watching. My wife reminisced about coming to Java when she used to be a lifeguard at a nearby camp many years ago. A barista from the Java "store" walked out to straighten up chairs, clear/wipe down tables and to flirt with my nephew. He got all shy, but I know his game, he's a lady's man. The atmosphere was relaxing...small town feel with beautiful locals roaming the streets under the warm Sunday a.m. sun. The patio tables started filling up fast to let us know this was a popular spot. Anyone else find it a lil strange that there's only a couple peeps from Idaho that reviewed this gem? We were looking for a fun place to eat for our first breakfast in the Sun Valley/Ketchum area. We read some really good reviews on Yelp, and we were sold when we saw pictures of the avocado toast. Naturally, we ordered the avocado toast and added a scrambled egg to the side to complete the meal prior to hiking Bald Mountain. We were not disappointed. The food and coffee was fantastic!!! Not only was the food amazing, the owner, we guessed, was just a very down to earth wholesome dude. He saw my deployment shirt and started up a conversation about the military. FYI, this cafe is military friendly which goes along way for us. To finish the story, the food was good a filling we didn't get hungry throughout he whole hike and we tons of energy. Because I've cut down on my meatball sandwiches, I had some extra space in my bridesmaid dress for eggs benedict on a bagel. I had it to go so I could attempt to get ready and all of that while I was eating my breakfast. I really like eggs bene but on a bagel is killer (lots of carbs and calories); I probably should have asked for it on a different type of carb. The eggs benedict was good - the hollandaise sauce wasn't too rich, and the eggs also weren't too soft/runny. Even though I complain about the bagel, having eggs benedict on an onion bagel was actually quite tasty. The wait for my food took quite a while, so that was a bit annoying. Before our next trip to Sun Valley I"ll have to make sure my daughter is potty trained because it's impossible to find a changing table in Ketchum. After finding no changing table in the bathroom of Java I asked the nice guy behind the counter where people in Sun Valley change their babies. His response: "Our babies don't poo in Sun Valley." :) Besides the lack of changing table Java made me happy. So happy that we ate here at least 3 times in one week. Mr. no poo makes a mean vanilla latte and their food is pretty tasty as well. I was a big fan of their homemade granola and my husband raved about his breakfast burrito. The hummus plate special didn't really do it for me, but I guess I should know better than to order a hummus plate at a coffee shop. My little pooper made quite the mess with her food during all our visits, but the staff was very nice about it. They didn't mind when we changed her on their outside couches as well, but then again we had no choice due to the lack of changing tables in this town. read more

If you're looking for a stellar breakfast, you're getter off at Bluebird nearby, but this place has a few bonuses: The "bowl of soul" is a wonderful drink, Hot or iced, with a chocolate-coffee combo taste. And the breakfast sandwich is fine. We also ordered the Benedict and the macho burrito, both good. But don't order any extra bacon here! Your main dish is finished LONG before the man who adds the bacon gets done. While in line to order, we watched other people's food sit and cool off while waiting for bacon. And the staff kept asking for the bacon and it would not come. And then sitting outside, listened to people wonder why their food was cold. Ordered two, double shot lattes to go. As an espresso enthusiast it was immediately clear by grind time and extraction color/flow rate and time of extraction that a single shot was pulled for each. The milk froth looked pale as well. I noticed a gallon of skim milk sitting out next to the barista and asked if they had used that milk and if they had if they could please remake it to which the cashier (who didn't pull the shots) quickly exclaimed that 2% is the default and that "for sure it's not skim". After one taste it was confirmed there was indeed an over extracted single shot in a skim milk latte. Gave the employees several opportunities along the way to change or even remake but ultimately they stood their ground and we ended up asking for a refund as the manager was unavailable. Not the place to go if you are wanting a thoughtfully created espresso based beverage with staff who want you to be satisfied as a customer. read more

Java on 4th used to be better. Like everywhere else, they're short staffed, but that's not an excuse to be unpleasant. I gave them lots of grace and an absurd amount of "please and thank you" courtesies (plus a tip) but at 8:30am on a Tuesday, there wasn't even a line of more than 3 and the cashier still couldn't be bothered to treat me with respect or crack even something close to a smile. I was standing 3 ft away and she didn't even bother saying my name when she tossed my pastries on the counter. No one should go into an establishment and feel like an inconvenience to the staff when making a simple latte order. Be aware too that there's a full (yet simple) b'fast menu, but they're too short staffed to make any of their menu items in the morning. We got a couple scones and they were very crumbly/semi-stale. I went down the street and got an avocado bagel at another cafe 2 blocks over which was glorious and the baristas were so pleasant! A fun little local coffee shop found in the heart of Ketchum. We wandered in looking for some breakfast and some hot coffee before hitting the slopes at Sun Valley over president's day long weekend. The place wasn't crowded but there were a few locals inside with their breakfast and books/laptops. We ordered at the counter. The food seemed a little on the pricey side; however, we are in a little town full of tourists. The egg sandwich that my husband got was huge! It seemed appropriate for the cost of what it was. I ended up with just a bagel and cream cheese mainly because the vegetarian options were few and overpriced for my liking. Both of our plates came with some fresh fruit off to the side that I really enjoyed. My latte was delicious and my husband's mocha was even better. The flavors melted really well together and everything was heated all the way through. Maybe I need to try it again and try other items off the menu but it was a-ok for what we needed that morning. read more

I really liked this spot on a quiet street in Ketchum. We were in town for a few days checking out the area and decided to stop in here for our morning coffee and tiny bite to eat. The place was packed with locals about 10 minutes after they opened. (which is always a great sign) Everyone that worked there and that was in the coffee shop was super nice and laid back. The line was long but went quickly. We got Americanos to drink and a piece of their banana bread to split. Both were really good. It's deceivingly big inside with a few different rooms, couches, chairs and tables. Some of the regulars even brought their travel mugs in to have them fill them up.
