I've been coming here for a few years now and while I would give at least a 4 stars for the breakfast sandwiches and the lattes I usually get, I'm giving them a 3 now. During covid, I have not felt like social distancing has been enforced in the coffee shop and that too many people are sitting in there for how small the space is (and that's from a person who only does pickup anyway- no way will you catch me eating or drinking *inside* any establishment right now). I hate to say it, but I've actually stopped going for pickup because of how uncomfortable I am just waiting on my order to be ready. I tried to do call in orders so that my stuff will be ready and I can be in and out but you still have to wait to pay if people are in front of you when you arrive. I visited this store hoping for a pleasant shopping experience, but unfortunately, I was met with nothing but rudeness from the staff. It seems like customer service is not a priority here. The employees were dismissive, unhelpful, and downright disrespectful. I left feeling frustrated and disrespected. I would not recommend this store to anyone looking for friendly service. I am someone who almost buy buba everyday with my friends and has never shown disrespect but just because one day I used their restroom without buying anything they treated rudely. I love supporting local businesses and not giving in to the franchise coffee places etc. This is a cute little cafe that's a couple of doors down from Safeway. They serve coffee, tea, pastries, desserts sandwiches and a variety of other snacks. Plus, they serve boba tea. I meet here once a week with a writing club and I love seeing them each and every week. The staff here is very pleasant and when you place an order and there is a line, they will bring your beverage & food directly to you. I've ordered Coffee, iced coffee, matcha green latte, pistachio latte and everything has been very good. I think the best part of this place is the fact that they have numerous outlts that I can plug in my electronic devices. This has saved me so much time and energy trying to charge my phone and laptop because their battery is running out fast. Looking for outdoor seating at coffee shops, I found this spot. I really like this funky little cafe to meet my friends outdoors. There's a bunch of metal tables and chairs that you can arrange right outside the cafe, and it's all under an overhead. So if it's raining you can still hang out with your friends. So this spot has the typical arrangement of coffees that we all have grown to love. It also has a pretty wide selection of foods that they make in their kitchen and also baked goods that you can just pick up and eat. Every time I've gone the service has been just excellent. And my friends and I get a wide variety of things to drink and to eat and it's all very good. The baked goods are really yummy. I am taking one star off only because people do sit inside and don't wear masks. I am sitting outside but I do have to go inside and wait online and order my food and it bothers me to see people without masks even if it's just one person. read more

I like to go to this place in the morning to get a breakfast sandwich and some coffee. It's a very quiet atmosphere and I usually notice people on computers doing work. This is a great place to go to if you want to study or be on your computer and a quiet secluded area. Definitely not a place for big groups to sit around and talk. Really wanted to like this new local coffee and pastry shop. The only reason they are getting any stars is because their coffee was OK. But their customer service is just appalling. When you have a line of people waiting to be serviced, don't stand there idly chatting with your friends or relatives while your teammate is running around like her head has been cut off. Do ask your customers if their orders are for here or to go. Don't just assume they want a "to go" order; it is unwelcoming, to say the least. And don't look annoyed when they ask you for a mug. Really good boba! I got the orea milk tea size large. Its pretty good but as a real oreo fanatic I would prefer for them to maybe mix the oreo in rather than adding it on top of the ice. If its on top of the drink by the time you get to the bottom the crumbs are soaked in the ice and you're stuck scraping for clumps of what could've been a more pleasant experience if mixed into the drink. Oreo is a nice garnish but it works much better as something to eat! My wife had the Taro Milk Tea with boba and she loved it. They have really good cheese danishes, as well as coffee cakes! I came here to study for a couple of hours before I had to be somewhere (and avoid rushhour traffic) and I sincerely thought this was going to be my first (second?) five star review! Okay, so, first of all, when I arrived the barista literally put down whatever she was doing to come help me. I thanked her but asked her to finished because I needed a few minutes to decide. Anyway, that was nice--it was considerate, thoughtful service without being obnoxious for the sake of reviews. In fact, both baristas were polite and helpful, which is i think worth mentioning because in many reviews, unfortunately, thats not the case. Next, I was able to order my taro boba with almond milk! (so, apparently whatever magic ingredients naturally go into boba tea are already dairy-free/vegan, so I have NO idea why all these other chains refuse to carry something simple like a carton of soy or almond milk. It lasts longer than regular milk, theyre gonna charge extra like literally every other establishment on the face of this earth, and they would gain/keep more customers. I digress...) The drink, with 50% sugar, was great (unless I could have specified 37%!) if a little heavy on the ice. Initially, my only complaint was the fact these two women sitting inches apart were talking so loud I could heard them with my headphones on... but then I conceded it's a public space, and their voices was not under the control of the establishment. My slightly larger complaint was aside from the nondairy drink varieties there were literally NO vegan options on the menu (if there were, they were really not obvious.) I got a plain bagel, which did the job. But my actually serious complaint (and I wont elaborate) was the cleanliness of the bathroom. ...yeah, I wont elaborate, but it is an eating establishment so hygiene is a serious consideration. I tried their Thai green tea (Thai tea + green tea) and it was interesting (more green tea flavor than Thai tea). I just love trying different drinks. The gyro breakfast sandwich was delicious and filling. The staff were nice and even came outside to ask us about the food and see how they can improve! Overall would say this place is pretty mediocre. I ordered a matcha latte and a coffee and both were well below average. The matcha latte was super bitter as the probably use pretty low quality matcha. I also got a rose milk tea (bubble tea) from the Ocha Tea at this location. It was pretty terrible as well as I ordered one with 50% sweetness and it was still ridiculously sweet, diluted it with 2 cups of oat milk at home to get it down to "drinkable" levels. The employees were very friendly and welcoming and were very patient with us as my friends and I tried to make up our minds about what to order. We ordered a standard milk tea and a fruit slush. They were to our tastes well flavored, not too sweet, and at the right temperature. The fruit slush was icy and my milk tea was lukewarm because it was made hot and then iced down. The decor inside is Instagram ready and I appreciate the effort. This place was great - the two guys working the counter had to be the nicest individuals alive. They were genuinely friendly and super patient as you sort through the never ending drink, food, and treat menus. I opted for a Canadian bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich on a croissant with a horchata latte. The sandwich was freshly made and had that picture perfect melted cheese oozing out. It was quite yummy. The horchata latte, which maybe isn't technically a latte since it didn't have coffee in it, was light and tasty but did come off a tad too sweet for me the closer to the end I got. A couple of minor downfalls: - there are drink and dessert options all over the place - on the menu board, taped to the entrance as you walk in, hung on a sting like a banner - it was a tad overwhelming but they all sounded appealing. - it sounds a bit like being in an air hangar as multiple plane engines rev up when you make your way to the women's restroom. Located within a few blocks of the post-apocalyptic wasteland known as Landmark Mall (was the movie "I am Legend" shot inside?), Java Loco stands out as an overachiever in terms of its function as local independent coffee shop within this section of Alexandria. The staff is extremely polite and non intrusive, drinks are mixed a bit on the sweet side although the chocobella (nutella latte) was on point carrying nutty and bittersweet undertones amidst a well brewed dark roast. There are a diverse offerings of savories and sweets including gelato, a chalkboard of sandwiches, and an abundant display of confectioneries with the wood paneling giving off an old time candy store appearance. While the offerings are suggestive of an Italian coffee house, I don't think the sandwiches veer towards a high degree of authenticity (not sure if the paninis are actually pressed) although the gelato is sourced from DC's Dolci Gelati which has high marks. Java Loco is both overachieving for what would be considered acceptable compared to its neighbors yet underachieving in what I would expect if this same storefront were located within a trendier neighborhood such as Georgetown. Therefore I think the Yelp ratings and reviews are well calibrated. A nice little oasis if you need a place for caffeinated refreshment, a light snack, or getting work done in the area (complimentary wifi) to escape the threat of any nocturnal mutants. read more

About a 2.5: I was in the area, and I saw Java Loco from the corner of my eye. I did not realize that there was a coffee place in the Van Dorn Plaza! I saw that they had a little easel in the front, stating some of their special lattes and drinks of the day. The cafe itself is very cute, and there were plenty of tables to sit down, enjoy your cup of brew, and to do some work/chit-chat with friends. The place is Korean-owned, and they offer pastries, cookies, coffee, smoothies, as well as sandwiches, wraps, and paninis. I wanted to try their special, the Breve Latte, made with heavy cream - the female cashier/employee had no idea what I was talking about - I stated that it was on the sign out at the front as one of their specials; she actually walked with me outside to the sign, and she still had no idea what that was, as it was written by her boss... she then asked her male counterpart, and he also had no clue what that drink was. So, I decided to try their other drink, the 'Banana Nut Bread Latte' - I've never heard of that, so I was pretty excited for that as well! When I received it, there was no banana or any nut flavor, and it just tasted like a mocha... I was kind of really disappointed :( My husband, on the other hand, had the iced Passion Fruit tea. This actually was quite tasty, but it does come as a straight tea, so you can add sugar/milk/cream to your heart's desire. The brown sugar at the little station, however, was all clumpy and dried out. I am not sure if there is some type of a communication issue or what not, but the staff is unaware of their drink specials, and also are not well-versed in creating the drinks as well.
